I appreciate customers that put the plugs back in cores to be returned. Thank you for showing that and your parts person may not say or notice it at the time of return. If you are installing a rebuilt or reman trans, you should have the cooler flushed at a transmission shop that had a heated solvent air over hydraulic flush machine, designed to clean coolers, or just replace the radiator(if the trans cooler is inside of it). I'm constantly amazed at how much JR knows, but I also wonder why Johnny allows any of the Wichita Car Mafia to work in his shop. He's jeopardizing his insurance, his equipment is being depreciated, his bay is taken up and I doubt seriously any of these guys compensate him.
That’s no fun having a lift, transmission jack and proper tools. I took a C4 out of a 65 Mustang on the driveway with an old floor jack and enough tools to repair a lawnmower. Took it out, overhauled it, replaced some parts and it worked. Spent about $50 and two weeks time after work. That was before UA-cam.
I did the same job with 4 jack stand and a floor jack. Waller-ed it out with my knees and hands, let it land on my chest/hips and rolled it over on the floor. After that I went out and bought a trans jack. Sad, but usually the way I do things.
WTF??? If the instructions say you must update the vehicle, you don't just ignore it. 14:03 It's because the overhauled unit has an UPDATED TECHM that doesn't work with the old vehicle. The ONLY time you do not have to update the vehicle is when you REUSE your old TECHM. Getting an overhauled unit off the shelf is not the same as having your own unit rebuilt. I learned this lesson from the guys at Monster, not some youtuber flipping cars.
JR I bought a 4L60e from them as well and so far the Trans has been super now I bought it from them because they redo the whole Trans not like most Trans shops that just replace the broken part or parts.
Well, like the mechanic said they are very fond of that transmission. It is a selling point just like having a fresh timing belt and water pump is for a older front drive econobox is a good thing as a buyer, makes it easier to sell as one major expensive maintenance item is done for hopefully the life of the car.
A piece of suggestive advise. After finger tightening trans to engine bolts, I learned to use a 3/8th drine air impact to do final tighteng of the bolts. It was faster as well as sufficient. You could theoretically tighten them to torque specs, but with the extensions and swivel(s) it would not be accurate anyway.

15:58 not bad ! I was paying around 1500 to have ford A4LD Transmissions rebuilt and felt lucky if they lasted a few years. They were the worst transmissions I’ve ever had the displeasure or curse to deal with
I didn’t see him prime the torque converter either. It is a common problem with installing new trans. I bet that’s how the new converter previously replaced got cooked.
It does... they run these on a transmission dyno as well. I’ve probably shown me pre-filling converters in 4 videos so I don’t know why anyone would question that 🍻
I hope you primed the converter or it will cook it again! You didn’t show removing the converter and pouring about 2 quarts in it. I bet that’s how the new converter got cooked.
Since it came as an assembly from the re-builder it likely already had fluid in the convertor from the dyno/test cell most transmission re-builders run their units through. It even says it was dyno tested on their website.
We never do at my shop. Most converters come with some in it. And when we get a new trans to go in we don't pull the converter either just dump some new fluid in the pan (varies from 5quarts to 10 depending on truck) start it and finish filling the trans
P.S. I do NOT miss working in a transmission shop. Work all week and then it takes ALL weekend to get rid of the auto trans fluid stench. Then it's back to get smelly again.

you said you are ready to drop the cross member ,, but you have a screw jack under the trans so how would you get the transmission jack under the pan ? i assume you relized that and removed the screw jack and put the trans jack under it. also i normally disconnect everything except the bell houseing bolts so that you put the jack under remove cross member remove bell houseing bolts and it comes out also clearing the cooler and lines is easier once the trans is out
Same trans I have in my h2. Can confirm. They're garbage. They couldn't have moved the exhaust literally 2 inches to get the pan off the trans without dismantling it?
The head hitting step is absolutely crucial. If you don't have a few bumps on your head, a couple bruises and some bleeding fingers, you didn't fix it right. ;)

Try the cannon cameras they have amazing autofocus with a 50mm 1.8 stimga lens it will help. With a wider view and blur out the background. Probably a cannon m50 or cannon eos R
The problem is those transmission remanufacturing companies that O'Reilly advance AutoZone or Napa use is a revolving door the companys only last about as long as their warranty I've literally seen thousands come and go in about a 10-year period. I know a lot about this from being a transmission specialist at Jasper Engines and Transmissions.
Those GM “W” clips have to be the worst quick disconnect. Even with the tool they don’t work right, they always fly halfway across the shop and where they connect is always in the worst spot so you gotta fight the clip while trying to get at it lol
Where did you buy this truck? Please teach me where to buy a late model truck like yours for such a low price. In my younger days, I have swapped in a few engines, and transmissions that were not intended to be used in my old truck. I muddled through somehow!
I had a torque converter fail and there was no stall and I almost strand my 1983 Chevy diesel van out of the back side of the Lincoln into the catalog but I turned the key off and came to a stop
I do my top bolt from the top with a ratchet wrench and the other top ones with long extensions and 1 swivel from all the way back but also always on the ground because I'm poor
Back in June I picked up an almost mint condition (with 300k miles) 04 Tahoe with the flex fuel 5.3 and it runs great but the mileage blows (I rebuilt the heads, installed a 615-183x intake, long tube headers, and tuned w-HP Tuners). I went from an average of 14 mpg to 15.5. With the performance stuff I’ve done and what I plan on doing I want a transmission that will A. Live & B. Give me a wider range of gears. So I’m looking into putting in a 6l80e out of a later truck and physically it’ll fit ( with some tweakage of the mount and cross member) but what I’ve found out is that the controller is inside the trans, so anyone out there who knows if these transmissions can be swapped and controlled into earlier vehicles please hit me up
Always worth buying a known good quality overhauled item, rather than some cheap knock-off. As for the 'you're only selling the truck on, what does it matter if it's a cheap overhaul that won't last' argument... Conscience man, conscience. Plus the satisfaction of knowing a job done right - that's how JR rolls...
"What if I sell my vehicle before the warranty expires? Because your PowerTorque transmission warranty is attached to your vehicle’s VIN, it’s still covered, regardless of ownership."
The thing is the trans is warrantied but labor isn't and that means if it was to fail again and they did honor the warranty you still have to do (or pay to do) the job
If it’s like my local oreallys the warranty is useless anyway. I know of 5 shops that have had issues with their warranty on engines and transmissions. One they even delivered a core as the new one and refused to take it back

That's a Sharp & pretty looking Truck though , but it's Bad News & that goes for any Man that purchasing a car for his Daughter in the Year 2018 , 2019 and for da_ _ sure, not January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020....I'm Down , I'm Out & I'm Movin' On

After doing a 4L80 on a 93 4WD Suburban with no lift, just looking at this job I envy how easy it is
I have to replace rear main seal on a O5 Tahoe I’ve owned for years a Z71 fully loaded and still pristine . But I’ve been putting it off brim working on the ground by myself. Something that in my 20s was a lot easier. Now closer to 50 I’ve been putting it off but will get it done
I'm constantly amazed at how much JR knows, but I also wonder why Johnny allows any of the Wichita Car Mafia to work in his shop. He's jeopardizing his insurance, his equipment is being depreciated, his bay is taken up and I doubt seriously any of these guys compensate him.
publicity?
We used the trans flush cleaner at the trans shop in Grandview, MO as well. After the flush, we blew the system clear with compressed air also.
Need to program the TCM to update it to your truck. Don’t ever skip that step.
I was waiting on that
How do you do that
Will that cause hard shifting?
That’s no fun having a lift, transmission jack and proper tools. I took a C4 out of a 65 Mustang on the driveway with an old floor jack and enough tools to repair a lawnmower. Took it out, overhauled it, replaced some parts and it worked. Spent about $50 and two weeks time after work. That was before UA-cam.
Change the front main seal while you have the transmission out!
rear main seal
3:38 blond firecrackers replacement?
The warranty is definitely worth it - smart move!
Tyler to John: "You've turned into me."
I effs with both of y'all. 👍🏿
I did the same job with 4 jack stand and a floor jack. Waller-ed it out with my knees and hands, let it land on my chest/hips and rolled it over on the floor. After that I went out and bought a trans jack. Sad, but usually the way I do things.
Wait, isn’t the golden Cayenne in the background up on the lift the one that deadlocked on Hoovie a couple of weeks ago?
Yep, its getting a new engine!
KeenCrafting thanks! Was that mentioned in the video? Might have to rewatch
Hoovies got a engine from their favorite high end yard so getting replaced cheap.
Moritz It was mentioned, and in great detail, as the replacement engine was even there in a crate.
@@how_about_nein In Tyler's video
Should have made a video of you rebuilding the trans. They are surprisingly easy to disassemble and rebuild.
I wish you showed how to take off the harness. I'm having a hard time with mine.
They make a clamp to mount the manifold If the bolt is broke
Nice when trans was pulled recently. Makes job a lot easier
Hoovie: You're turning into me
JR: except that I actually do my own work... 😉
Dam. You made that look easy. Those lifts sure help.
my truck got the stage 3 billet 6l80 and billet stall. tstat delete, inline bar and fin w/fan, delete radiator lines, redline, morroso pan, and hptune only cost $10k
15:58 not bad ! I was paying around 1500 to have ford A4LD Transmissions rebuilt and felt lucky if they lasted a few years. They were the worst transmissions I’ve ever had the displeasure or curse to deal with
Can you make a video about putting a car up for sale? the process of it beginning to sale? that would be so great !!
So excited for this update! Did the TC come pre-filled with fluid?
I didn’t see him prime the torque converter either. It is a common problem with installing new trans. I bet that’s how the new converter previously replaced got cooked.
It does... they run these on a transmission dyno as well. I’ve probably shown me pre-filling converters in 4 videos so I don’t know why anyone would question that 🍻
WatchJRGo not everyone watches every video!!
WatchJRGo I haven’t used them in the past so just wondering...sounds like a good deal with the warranty!
Why not pull the flex plate and replace the rear main seal? I believe you indicated the rear main was leaking.
I'm amazed at what you know about vehicles, love your videos.
P.S. I do NOT miss working in a transmission shop. Work all week and then it takes ALL weekend to get rid of the auto trans fluid stench. Then it's back to get smelly again.
Bro I’m havin problems with my 13 5.3 pos Chevy and I think this vid actually really help me get a good idea on what I’m about to do hopeful I don’t fuck it up if I do it myself but then I have to do it on the ground😭😭
hey , great series! i really dont think your costs are true to most of us, you use a professionals shop and scan tools and you have the ninja there for help , us lay people dont get that assistance most of the time! but keep'em coming !
Who else just watched the previous video and thought damn ima have to wait a week for the next ;)
It used to be a fun game to drink for every Hoovie car you saw at The Wizard's shop. Now you can do the same drinking game at The Car Ninja's. 2 shots comin up!
before tyler moved into the exclusive neighborhood that he lives in now, did he live in or around your neighborhood? or how did you guys meet? his old videos show his house that looks to be in a neighborhood with similar style houses to yours
You need to make a playlist for this truck!
JR is like a UA-cam version of wheeler dealers
I met Ed at SEMA, cool dude 💯
@@WatchJRGo Edd ;)
@@WatchJRGo Ed's a legend!
Except that JR comes across as a nice knowledgeable guy, whereas Brewer just seems like a cheesy spiv who gets everyone else to do the work
you said you are ready to drop the cross member ,, but you have a screw jack under the trans so how would you get the transmission jack under the pan ? i assume you relized that and removed the screw jack and put the trans jack under it. also i normally disconnect everything except the bell houseing bolts so that you put the jack under remove cross member remove bell houseing bolts and it comes out also clearing the cooler and lines is easier once the trans is out
Same trans I have in my h2. Can confirm. They're garbage. They couldn't have moved the exhaust literally 2 inches to get the pan off the trans without dismantling it?
We work around it aty shop. Pry bar against the subrame to push it down and pull the pan🤷♂️
"quick little 5 hour job" love it!
The head hitting step is absolutely crucial. If you don't have a few bumps on your head, a couple bruises and some bleeding fingers, you didn't fix it right. ;)
Those 6l80s are notorious for the pump blowing up and those fill the coolers full of metal and need a hot flush for at least an hour, or you don't get it all out.. thats probly why that one just went out.. that can flush isnt enough for those
Its incredible in that trucks the single cabs worth more money then the extended cabs
I gotta 0 3 15 100 Silverado first and second is grinding in the transmission will. A 4 wheel drive transmission from an 01 fitness. I have one of those with a thousand miles on it
I been waiting for this. I still wonder if we will just never see the R8.
Oreillys sells transmissions ????
JRGo, it's great that you can get that kind of warranty from O'Riley's . . . to bad GM just doesn't build vehicles that don't need replacement transmissions or even offer a warranty half as good.
Hoovie: I'm not going to help!
JRGo: Whew! Thank God for small favors!😜
I don’t believe the warranty is transferable
@@12yearssober it is attached to the vin of the vehicle. I sell them all day long with no issues
Cody Weller
I hope so
Johnny is going to have to have you do transmission install in the future while he is doing a Engine rebuild
Great progress so far on the restoration!
Really good replacement there dude
Try the cannon cameras they have amazing autofocus with a 50mm 1.8 stimga lens it will help. With a wider view and blur out the background. Probably a cannon m50 or cannon eos R
The problem is those transmission remanufacturing companies that O'Reilly advance AutoZone or Napa use is a revolving door the companys only last about as long as their warranty I've literally seen thousands come and go in about a 10-year period. I know a lot about this from being a transmission specialist at Jasper Engines and Transmissions.
11:36 that top bolt looked fun
Those GM “W” clips have to be the worst quick disconnect. Even with the tool they don’t work right, they always fly halfway across the shop and where they connect is always in the worst spot so you gotta fight the clip while trying to get at it lol
So cool that Jonny let you use the shop and stay so late to git 'r dun - and that he even lent a hand on a Chevy haha
I really hope he checked that warranty. There is a-lot of places that have a warranty like that for the Original Purchaser.
I've gotten to the point where I can do a two wheel drive 4l60 in about an hour. That's out flushed and in. I also do transmissions for a living
Good thing you're besties with the ninja full blow repair shop with all tools at hand.......
That is awesome atleast u got great transmission in it for the next customer great job jr
I have a cls550 just like the one behind you guys but mine is mettalic black with a dark red burgundy wine leather interior. ..
Jr you should buy Ninja a killer Xmas gift. What a great friend
Hoovie rlly sees John as a rival, I like the rivalry clash
I'm always amused at how neat and clean Johnny is...
I do my top bolt from the top with a ratchet wrench and the other top ones with long extensions and 1 swivel from all the way back but also always on the ground because I'm poor
I bet they didn’t put a new seal on the input shaft and junked it
Back in June I picked up an almost mint condition (with 300k miles) 04 Tahoe with the flex fuel 5.3 and it runs great but the mileage blows (I rebuilt the heads, installed a 615-183x intake, long tube headers, and tuned w-HP Tuners).
You should get a T-shirt that litterally says "Not like this one"
I don't think the O'reilly warranty is transferrable.
It's warrantied through powertorq and when it fails, not if but when the new owner will have to buy another trans
Rijo Rajan so it’s 3 hours of labor vs 2000 plus labor.
If it’s like my local oreallys the warranty is useless anyway. I know of 5 shops that have had issues with their warranty on engines and transmissions. One they even delivered a core as the new one and refused to take it back
