Had to come by and comment, after watching this video and the rear main seal video several times I was confident enough to attack my rear main seal. It took 13 hours with a couple friends helping. Take your time and it will go fine. I did not drain the transmission, nor did I remove the driveshaft from the tail shaft. I wasn't sure, and am still not sure if the fluid would come out if I had pulled the drive shaft. We did experience some minor leakage from the dip stick tube hole in the trans but not much. Thank you again for this wonderful 4l60E series! PS to everyone reading comments, find your inner Zen before you thread the torque converter bolts back in. I dropped the first one into the bell housing. Luckily after several frustrating minutes I was able to snag it blindly with a magnet. It could have been pull the transmission again but I got lucky, take your time with this step!
@@dudewecanfixit Had I pulled the driveshaft out of the tail piece, would the fluid have leaked out? I have a suspicion that there is a seal and it wouldn't have but I could not find a definitive answer anywhere and this was a serious broke man budget fix, fluid would have pushed me over the shoe string budget.
@@dudewecanfixit I appreciate the feedback! I hope it helps someone reading the comments! Even without pulling the shaft it was only a minor inconvenience since I only had to roll the trans back enough to access the rear main seal. Thanks again!
Thanks! I had my 4L60E transmission for a 2002 Chevy Express van lose 3-4 gear. I called shops that wanted a lot of money or refused the job. It was your videos that got my van working again. I was able to follow your instructions to remove the transmission myself with the needed info on using heat gun to un-glue connection and the close up of e-clip removal. I did send the transmission to a machine shop for repair but still was able to save over $ 2K because of your videos!

Just finished replacing the rear main seal (RMS) on my Yukon and not a leak anywhere! Thanks guys for this awesome tutorial! Few tips for anyone attempting this repair. 1. Mark the position of the driveshaft at universal joint (paint marker) 2. Mark driveshaft at rear of transmission (paint marker) 3. Mark relationship of torque converter to drive plate through inspection plate at bottom of the trans. These must align during install. 4. Clean alignment dowels protruding from engine block and holes in the trans. Use some emory cloth to remove the rust and add a light coat of anti seize. Makes for smooth install. 5. RMS install. PTFE (newer style seal) goes in dry. No lube is necessary to install in seal to the RMS plate. 6. Clean RMS plate and engine block mating surfaces. Especially the bottom corners where the engine block meets the oil pan. Cleaned mine 3 times with brake cleaner.
A few things to remember: 1. While this is common sense, you should remember that when you take off the Transmission support, have a jack with some wood to under the transmission pan to hold the weight of the transmission. If you don't it can put stress on your engine mounts, which can give you a completely different problem. 2. When undoing the gear selector cable (at least on my suburban) there was also a large metal clip that looks like an unused staple. You have to pull that out with a flat head screwdriver before you can squeeze it and pop it out of place. 3. There is another bolt that holds some lines above the connectors that you have to heat up. It looks like a 8mm bolt that holds a bracket to the driver's side of the transmission. 4. This is more of an observation of the video itself. While it was very helpful and to the point, there were a few key things missing that made me question some things. I did notice that there were a couple times where the transmission didn't look supported the entire time the support bar was gone. This can potentially cause damage to the engine and engine mounts. There were a few brackets/clips that were not mentioned. I figure that is probably due in part to the fact that he said this transmission has been taken off before, so it may not gave all of its original pieces. That being said this was an extremely helpful video. Though I would suggest adding the step of supporting the transmission.
You have no idea How helpful this is or will be. I have some transmission work to do in a few days and this was by far the most detailed how to video I have seen. Thank you so much.

looking at replacing the rear main seal and plate/gasket on my dad's 02 Z71 and this makes me feel a little better. I've been turning wrenches for over 30 years but sometimes its nice to have a step by step on these things. my dread is the fact that I have a transfer case to deal with as well since its a 4wd
Damn this is the best video i have watched on how to remove the transmission and I have watched a lot on here so far. You went in a great length of details and showed exactly what to do with plenty of light. Thanks for this video, no I just have to get up the nerve to swap mine out now. Thanks
Hey guys, I'm a 33 year old self mechanic. Meaning, I only do work on my own vehicles. Well, with this well put together tutorial, I was able to run by the scrap yard and pull off a 4l60e transmission, alone, it took me all of 5 hours while watching this video in the process. I ran into some minor problems such as one of the torque converter bolts was super tight and had to use a breaker bar to get it off, which was hard in such limited space. But, overall I was able to remove the whole assembly by myself and I am here to say thank you very much for helping me along my tranny removal job. Time to install now on my truck. Hope you have an install video somewhere for the 4l60e.
im starting my 96 burban rebuild today! but my exhaust is stuck on bc they tried to fix a leak with the putty stuff... gonna cut it off to get out the tranny =(
Great video man. I am trying to tackle this job myself for the first time in an '04 Escalade ESV. Dealer quoted me almost 6,000 to replace the trans in a vehicle I paid $3,100 for. I couldn't believe it. I have always wanted a car lift at my house so I used this as my "excuse" to buy the lift. $6,000 for the trans versus $400 for used rebuilt trans on marketplace plus about $6,000 for the 2 post lift and 24x20 concrete pad installation. Figured I was getting a "free" lift if I did the trans myself lol. We'll see how it goes. Props to you doing it on the ground.
That's a great way to look at it! 🤣 I can swap a transmission on the ground in a day. Surely, the lift will help with that. Be careful, the transmission is heavy and having it up in the air can be dangerous without the right help or tools. Other than that, it will be much easier to work on! 1 day labor for $6000 slab and lift? I think you made the right choice!
@@dudewecanfixit Yeah I was worried about that. I was thinking about buying a transmission jack from harbor freight. But I have a few dirt bike/motorcycle scissor lifts that I think are 400 lb weight limit. has a nice wide flat rubber top Was thinking that may work. Worst case I can lower the lift down once all the works done and use some floor jacks to finish lowering the trans down then just lift the truck back up on the lift. I noticed I have quite a bit more crap to take off with this AWD Escalade.
Thank you the video breakdown. I used this as video reference for removing my engine due to a gouged piston head. The bell housing bolts on top were a bit inconvenient. However, I had previously removed the upper portion of the engine (intake, fuel lines, exhaust manifolds etc.) which made those top bolts very accessible. Again, thank you good sir!
Great detailed information on taking these transmissions out. Mine TB 4l60E has just over 270,000 miles on it, and has now started slipping. I will be replacing the transmission with a low mileage junk yard one. I am buying a transmission jack from harbor freight to do the job, and can take my time, since I will have my own jack. I already have an impact wrench, so I think I have everything I need. I will save a lot of money doing this myself. Shops I checked want over $5,000 to do it, and I should be able to do this with a low mileage used transmission, and a few new tools for less than $1,500. The used transmission I get will have a warranty too. I think the warranty is 12 months. If it is anything like my current transmission the it should last me about another 200,000 miles.
Dropping this same transmission out of my 98 envoy. Doesn't have a drain plug in the trans pan for some weird reason but I also remember a blazer I had worked on a while back didn't have one either (same year). Not sure if its an aftermarket pan or what.. either way, really appreciate this video and the ones after it. Literally the only detailed video that I could find and watch without asking myself wtf was going on.. lol
Would you suggest a beginner try to rebuild their own transmission for their first attempt? Also, I had this junk yard transmission, but should that 4L60e be programed in the ecm, to work properly? I'm asking because I have a 4.8LS, with a 4L60e installed in my 67 Oldsmobile Cutlass. The ecm was flashed from the vats, but not sure about the transmission.
I was told that the transmission won't work without being programmed in the ecm. I think not having the ecm programmed, burned out my 2nd, and 3rd gear.
I removed dozens of Transmissions. No it's been 12 years since I've had to do one. For a refresher this was a great video. Well done great explanation on acrostic
Awesome keep them coming this is how I fix things looking at UA-cam video on fix or repairs. I actually learned to change my own starter from video like this
This is Mather Knight, I was so impressed with this viedo. My only complaint is that I didn't find it until I had looked at about 20 other viedos on the subject. You must have a teaching back ground as you present the process in a way that allows anyone to follow regardless of their back ground. Keep up the good work and give your camera guy kudos too.

Agreed. After I removed the lines I remember I man here said reinstall the clips so you can just push the lines back in during install. What a time and frustration saver!
Just pulled my transmission today. Was such a pain. The flywheel/torque converter bolts were not 15mm, mine were hex bolts. Removed 2 and the third stripped. Got it out with a air hammer. Made what should have been a 2-3 hour job into 10 hours. Hoping the install is smooth. Very helpful videos just mine is a bit different for whatever reason
Finally a basic to the point trans removal video. I need to put a high stall torque converter in my Trailblazer SS. Im sure I'll be watching this 10 more times before I actually do mine. Im worried about those top bolts . I dont think I'll have the room that you did.
When you are ready to remove the top bolts, you can lower the transmission jack a few inches and let the transmission sag to access those bolts. Do not completely remove the transmission jack
You should know that your title made me feel so much better. Dropped in a new engine, wasn’t fitting, adjusted the transmission and boom, fluid, movement, panic. It’s ok “Dude, we can fix it

awesome vid. bout to take my 4l60e outta my 04 tahoe and this is the best video i've found on the subject. love the straight forwardness!
Sweet! Just keep in mind things won’t go as planned and you’ll have to prepare mentally for the hang up and snags 😂 but you got this! If you have any questions give us a shout
Excellent video, I’ve been thinking of doing this and this is one of the only videos where this task is done on the floor. The 4K video also helps ton, don’t know how we survived the days of analog video. Also great attention to detail with steps others gloss over.
Thank you so much, you have no idea how much it means to me to hear this kind of feedback instead of the usual “you forgot something or could do this better”.
Much appreciate it, please subscribe to my channel!
Thanks for the video brother!preparing to do mine soon
looking at replacing the rear main seal and plate/gasket on my dad's 02 Z71 and this makes me feel a little better. I've been turning wrenches for over 30 years but sometimes its nice to have a step by step on these things. my dread is the fact that I have a transfer case to deal with as well since its a 4wd
You have an extra driveshaft and about 6 bolts to remove the transfer case from the transmission. Its a little extra, but not that bad!
Damn this is the best video i have watched on how to remove the transmission and I have watched a lot on here so far. You went in a great length of details and showed exactly what to do with plenty of light. Thanks for this video, no I just have to get up the nerve to swap mine out now. Thanks
Thank you for the comment, we try really hard to provide the best informational videos out there. Please subscribe and share our channel!
I'm not even going to attempt this but you guys are awesome ad very easy to follow. My Avalanche would love you guys
It’s a job for sure! We appreciate commenting anyways 😁
Absolutely obsessed with this series!
That's awesome! Great job and thanks for the comment. We do have the install video as well
Very thorough and helpful! I was able to rebuild my transmission off of this series!
Thank you for the nice comment Joe!
im starting my 96 burban rebuild today! but my exhaust is stuck on bc they tried to fix a leak with the putty stuff... gonna cut it off to get out the tranny =(
That's very unfortunate, but you can do it!
I can swap a transmission on the ground in a day.
That sounds like a plan!
Tony can fix anything. But Sam and tony together? Unstoppable
Sam is the boss, I just do what he tells me
I appreciate all of the detailed videos, we've removed & installed quite a few transmissions with the help of your videos, so thank you!
Glad you found them helpful!
This is such a great series!
I don’t regularly comment on videos but holy crap!!! This is the best LS transmission removal vídeo ever! Great job 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks!
I love watching tutorials! I have saved so much money by doing things myself. I admit this is a job I would leave to my son though. lol
Glad you went into detail on those E clips!
Most definitely, we try not to leave anything out.
Thanks!
You're welcome!
Amazing video! Stoked for this series
Fantastic video. I love the editing particularly when you have the fasteners already loosened so there's no dead time watching your struggles
Thank you for the kind words!
Lol, trying to make it as efficient as possible
I love your 4 legged helper! This helped hubby so much, because we had to replace ours!
We are so glad it helped! Please subscribe and share our channel so we can keep producing videos!
I'm glad this was useful to you!
That is fantastic! A couple days work to save $3,500!
Finally! Such a simple and easy to follow video. Ready for the rest of the series
Thanks!
Series..?😂😂
Dropping this same transmission out of my 98 envoy. Doesn't have a drain plug in the trans pan for some weird reason but I also remember a blazer I had worked on a while back didn't have one either (same year). Not sure if its an aftermarket pan or what.. either way, really appreciate this video and the ones after it. Literally the only detailed video that I could find and watch without asking myself wtf was going on.. lol
I think they put a drain plug on later year model trucks. Like maybe 03ish, guess they didn’t think to put one on the earlier models. Lol
I appreciate the feedback, it’s nice to know that my work is appreciated!
Thank you for this awesome series. It's helping me tremendously.
Great to hear! Love that we could help you
Would you suggest a beginner try to rebuild their own transmission for their first attempt? Also, I had this junk yard transmission, but should that 4L60e be programed in the ecm, to work properly? I'm asking because I have a 4.8LS, with a 4L60e installed in my 67 Oldsmobile Cutlass. The ecm was flashed from the vats, but not sure about the transmission.
I was told that the transmission won't work without being programmed in the ecm. I think not having the ecm programmed, burned out my 2nd, and 3rd gear.
It is possible, but I do not know for sure. The transmission I rebuilt went back in the same vehicle without being reprogrammed.
I removed dozens of Transmissions. No it's been 12 years since I've had to do one. For a refresher this was a great video. Well done great explanation on acrostic
Thanks, I'm glad we were able to provide this video for you!
@@dudewecanfixit I have a question. Put transmission in, and my truck still won't move. It's not the shift cable,
Awesome keep them coming this is how I fix things looking at UA-cam video on fix or repairs.
Thanks, please share our channel.
I’m pretty limited on teaching experience, but I’m always improving and reflecting on the feedback and comments I get.
Thanks! You helped me out alot! I finally have my 4L60E out of my c2500 and ready to put my new one back in. Couldn't have done it without you! 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼💯
That's great! I'm glad we could be of assistance. Check out our install video as well
I love do it yourself video's. I always search for them before going somewhere or calling someone. This is great!
Good video. Never been good with cars but is good to know that I can find this type of tutorial to make my process a little bit easier. Keep going, guys!
Good video fixing to go pull a bad transmission today on a 03. I need the bell housing
Thanks!
So simple and easy. Thank you guys for that!
So simple that's by far from simple unless you have a lift ...
@@vincentgomez4435 You have to get it up high enough to slide trans out,use good safety stands and block wheels for added safety!
It's not bad. I don't have a lift, just make sure you have good jack stands with adequate height
Thank you so much I can't afford a transmission mechanic at the moment so I'm doing it all myself.
Mechanics are expensive, but you can do it for much cheaper and still do a good quality job. Just take your time
Great job explaining things and showing how the trans line clips work. Thanks!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Please subscribe and share our channel.
They may have been replaced in the past. I would go to a Chevy dealership and get new bolts with normal 15mm heads
What a cute pup! Thanks for all the great info!
Bro you made this look easy. This is the same as my Chevy avalanche correct ?
Yes, they should be the same
That's such a cute dog!
Started watching your video, I have 05 Tahoe need to pull transmission next few days, following your video before I start! Thanks, very Pro!
Thanks, I appreciate the comment!
Love the dog! Lol. This will be a great series
Thanks for the tip !
No problem!
Thank you for such an informative video! Will be looking out for the next ☺
Thank you for the nice comment!
Although I'm still not sure if I want to tackle this job, Thank you for a very clear and informative video.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video! The instructions were very easy to understand and thorough!
Thank you!
You should know that your title made me feel so much better. Dropped in a new engine, wasn’t fitting, adjusted the transmission and boom, fluid, movement, panic. It’s ok “Dude, we can fix it
Seriously, I needed that mentality to get through this next process. Thank you
I'm glad we were able to help! I've been in that situation too, but all you can do is keep moving forward
I'll definitely be looking for your videos to fix something 💕 cutest dog🌹
Beautiful puppy! 💜
Hey man. Not really a commenter for videos but this video was a relief. I sure thought I'd be getting into more than I was. I just want to say though all over UA-cam every video for a rear main seal on the 5.3 starts o staring at the rear plate cover. There isn't a single start to finish rear main seal video. That's why yours came in handy so much. Shoot you might want to reupload this exact video under the name "getting to your 5.3s rear main seal" or something like that and im sure a lot of people would thank you for it. It was kinda tricky to find this video but man, thanks for the help, the guidance, and it was fun working with ya. (Now if only you could train that big ass dog to work a ratchet or at least bring your wrenches you'd be all set.)
Lol, thank you for the kind words! I appreciate the insight as well. The dogs love hanging out in the shop to see what's going on, but not to work unfortunately.
So Neat. Easy To Do, Great, Subscribed. Great How to Do Tutorial. Will Really Help Me When Needed. Thank You.
I appreciate the subscribe! It helps us keep producing content. Plenty more videos to come, please share and enjoy!
Halfway through I HAD to subscribe. This was great explanation and gives me confidence. Thank you.
Thank you so much! I'm glad this video helped and I hope we have more content that helps you in the future.
Are there any specific repair videos that you think we should make?
My husband will like your UA-cam Channel,He is always working on something. Thank you #WreathsByDesign for letting everyone know about this channel.
Awesome video, y’all make it look easy!............have to replace my Rear Main Seal on my 03 Tahoe w/ 113,509 miles. I will only disconnect the trans and move it to the rear to get at the rear seal plate. Thanks again.
No problem, check out our 4l60 removal video if you need help disconnecting the transmission
You guys made an amazing video!! Great edits and very informative with steps and tips
Thank you! We appreciate the positive feedback!
You make it look so easy so glad I found this channel
Can’t wait to watch more videos.
Thank you for giving me the extra confidence to tackle this transmission out of my chevy now
You can do it!
Great informative video! Thank you so much!
THANK YOU for the tool list as your removing. That in itself is half the job, otherwise I'd be hunting and pecking the whole time. Great Video man!
Definitely! I try to make these videos as helpful as possible
Good job
Thank you!
Your the only one i seen so far that helped me get through mines to understand it
I'm glad we were able to help!
I love your dog! I know you can fix it. My husband "maybe" could fix it. I would pass you tools and feed the fur-baby.
This is Incredible, I see a lot of avalanches for sale and worry about transmission problems. I definitely confident I could do a transmission swap with this video if it popped up after buying one.
Glad it was helpful!
Absolutely everything you need to know for rebuilding a transmission!
Great video! Thank you for taking the time to make it for people like us!
My 6L80 transmission weight out on my GMC Sierra 1500 SLE. I searched UA-cam for a removal video and this was the best one I could find even though this is for the 4L60E it was close enough!
That's awesome!
I'm glad we were able to help!
for sure the best video about 4l60e removal on UA-cam, I´ve seen a lot of video but only by this one I understood everything.
Thank you for the kind words! Happy we were able to help. Make sure to subscribe for future videos!
nobody gonna talk about the GMC caps on a chevy?
Lol, I'm glad you found that little easter egg. Those rims are off a GMC truck.
That is a gmc bruh
It's all the same Yukon Tahoe suburban
Ne ways bout to pull my Tahoe trans ....I've watched your vid like 10 times ....I'll let you know how it works out...ps....didn't watch anyone else's vids
I’m about to have to do this on my 2001 chevy Silverado pick up truck and it feels like it’s going to be a daunting task
It's not so bad, just one step at a time.
Are you rebuilding it yourself?
@@dudewecanfixit I’m replacing it myself with a used transmission
This is great! I learned a lot
I need to buy a socket with the wiggle I'm beginning to take off the trans of my 2001 chevy suburban
You really do need to buy some, they are fantastic!

Great how to video brother I’m not pulling my trans but just replacing flex plate really helped me on moving it back a little to get to the flex 👍
Glad it helped!
Damn
Good video!!!!!!!!!!
We appreciate the feed back and support! Make sure you drop and like and sub! 😁
Just awesome. It's easy to forget to explain the small stuff and you got it.

Great video guys...My 1997 Chevy silverado k1500 5.7L Tranny went out on me lastnight! Watching this video sure helped and gave me some more confidence lol Me and the Haynes Manual are headed out to the Barn as we speak.Wish me luck
Good luck! Take your time and take a break if you get frustrated
UPDATE:Cannot believe I ran across my comment!! 2Years ago?! Wow time flys! I had my transmission rebuilt a couple days after this comment and she been running strong ever since! $1,650 out the door with (I think) a 2 year, 3,000mile warranty. I’m in need of a job and I’m thinking about going to work for the same guy/shop that rebuilt my Tranny. He just cannot find anyone who wants to work! He told me, he just needs someone to Unbolt and Bolt the transmissions! Very very Clean shop! And in the summer Big bay doors stay closed for most part and it stays nice and cold.Winter stays warm. Very nice guy and the most reputable Trans shop here in South Alabama! He told me he is willing to pay at least $22h/r maybe more for the right person! He’s getting old and he is really knowledgeable! I will learn a lot I know!Im really thinking about doing it! What do you guys think?! Negative/Positive/sarcastic,Etc advice is welcome!
P.S. I really think it’s cool you actually responded to my comment and took the time out of your busy schedule to do so! Very informative! Very quick but good attention to detail! Video is straight to the point! Thank you again brother!
P.S.S. Shout out to your assistant!
Thanks! I try to stay on top of the comments.
I do have the best assistant!
You guys made this look too easy. I am rebuilding off of transmission bench, but also look at everyone else's videos too. And your video is the one I chose for removing the transmission.
I am knocking it out...... or is it knocking me out???? Lol man I been getting my ass whipped, but I am down to my last few bolts. All the hard ones are done.
I also broke lose my o2 sensors instead of unplugging them.... o well. Too late now.
By the way I found a tip for removing stuck exhaust bolts.
Start up the vehicle and let it get to operating temperature.
It worked like a dream for me.
Saved me $50 plus on buying a torch.
It even loosened up the o2 sensors.
I haven't been recording it one because I am having a hard time anyways and 2 I only have a few hours in the colder parts of the day to do this. I might make a video before I get done. I don't know. Will be on a different channel of mine though.
Anyways thanks for the video! It is coming in very handy.
Word to those who give up easy. Don't try this if you aren't sure you can do it or will atleast promise yourself not to give up! Lol 🤣😩
That's good stuff! These big jobs take time and you just have to take a step back, breathe, and keep going.
