My apologies for the grumpy video. It will not happen again. Been getting lots of calls from out of state lately, with people arguing about cost. Money is tight for them, and rather than work something out with me, they just go right into insults and attacking me. Kinda got to me guys. Again. No more grumpy videos. I promise.
Yeah, that was pretty bad. Just turn people away if being uncooperative, it doesn't look like there's a shortage of incoming work. I enjoy working on things but didn't want to deal with automotive customers (retail auto parts was bad enough), so went to A&P school and work on aircraft
Some jobs you make money on because it takes less time than book. Other times you lose money because stuff happens that don't show up until later when you are into the job (rust, broken bolts).
That's it. Another one is an objection to paying a large amount of labor for a "10 cent part". I ask if it would make them feel better about the labor if I charge more for the part. They usually become more understanding at that point
If you can do a 5 hour job in 30 minutes.. and get paid for 30 minutes. You still have 4.5 hours available to do other work and get paid for it, so your not actually getting any pay cut. If you do three 5 hour book rate jobs in 5 hours you are getting paid three times as much per hour. So I guess it comes down to this. Is the person paying for the job and getting the job done. Fine, and it benefits the mechanic. Or is the customer paying by the hour .. and getting charged for hours not actually worked. I sure understand a highly skilled mechanic getting paid more for his high level of skill.. What I have found is mechanics that want it both ways. They quote a repair for 700 dollars. 500 book rate plus a 100 dollar part marked up 100 percent. Then a bolt breaks or something becomes more difficult due to corrosion.. then they want to charge 500 dollars more because it would take them the full book time when they expected it to take a third the time. Or they quoted the job but want more money because it became difficult. So its not always a simple deal. You also have mechanics that say a part is bad.. and charge for the repair which is never done. I belive david to be a highly skilled honest mechanic.. and I believe him ethical in his practices.. but not every shop and person is.
That’s fine don’t take a pay cut. But quit charging for shop supplies I don’t mind paying for your work if it’s good. But I hate paying for your crap like brake cleaner. Every shop I ever been to you guys have multiple partly used cans of it sitting on your to boxes
I have an 02 Silverado 1500 Z71 LS 4x4 with the 5.3 Vortec. She's had a hard life, she's been used for a firetruck, wood hauling, construction, and finally by the maintenance man where I worked. He took care of her pretty well. She looks pretty rough, every quarter panel has dents and scratches. The rockers, and all four fenders are rusted through. She currently has 326,000 miles. Runs smooth as silk, and quiet. Every single thing on her still works. I have a good mechanic like you Wizard. When I first got her I had him go over her with a fine tooth comb, and give me a list of things wrong, in the order of most important to least important, one by one he repaired all the problems. Total for everything was a little over $3k. I know I have more in her than any blue book, Edmunds, or whatever. I don't care. I love the old girl. I named her Big Red. I'd drive her anywhere, and she's comfortable. I'll never get rid of her.
2009 Chevy never get rid of it . Think I'd go to California and back in this dam thing rust little frame need a weld but dam thing gos like a Cadillac . At 4 wheel drive .
I have a 2010 red one too, she is so pretty, no dents at all, just getting Into 180K. I need to start taking care of several simple issues, and check oil leak
@mariorrodriguez535 Oh, I wish I could have gotten ahold of my "Big Red" when she was still pretty. At 20 feet, she looks pretty good. Once you get close, you see every battle scar, right down to a couple of the wheels. At some point, probably during the time she was used for cutting and hauling firewood commercially, she was buried up to the frame, spinning the wheels and scaring them clear to the center. Oh well, what's important is everything on her still works, every leak, and mechanical issue has been addressed. She's as comfortable as a Cadillac and consistently gets 16.7 mpg with the ac blowing ice cubes. I love the old girl. She's my going to town rig. We're both enjoying retirement together. These days, the heaviest thing she hauls is a few bags of top soil from Lowes now and then. Chevrolet, the heartbeat of America. ❤️ 🇺🇸 🛻 💪
I love the questions from Mrs. Wizard! If “running at the high rpms is bad for the motor” and “when do you need to drill out the exhaust bolts”. I’m trying to pick up as much as I can about cars and maintenance and the extra context from her questions (staged or not) is so nice
That's pretty arrogant. Can do the job in 45 minutes and charge 3 hours? Why do you think people are using you repair shop? To be charged more because you're great? Hahahaha.
@@serge.l.1897 I don't remember Micheal Phelps getting penalized for winning all his races in the Olympics. Infact, they gave him a medal. Just because a mechanics good, doesn't mean he should be payed less. Labor times are set by the manufacturer, not the Mechanic.
@@Maroco918 " I don't remember Micheal Phelps getting penalized for winning all his races in the Olympics. Infact, they gave him a medal. "Labor times are set by the manufacturer, not the Mechanic. " This is not a warranty job. ;)
If that “3 hour job” takes him 4 or 5 hours is he going to still charge you 3? One would hope it works both ways! Most mechanics would come back with some BS like “I know we quoted you 3 hours BUT yours was more difficult than expected because Of XYZ”

It Isn't grumpy if It's the truth. We have a shop we use It's a 70 mile round trip anytime we go there. We do it because they are extremely good at what they do, they are reasonably priced, and most of all they are trustworthy, and honest! A huge plus. Keep doing what you are doing we love your videos.
Im in southern Ontario and when we get these trucks ( rams and F150 s as well) with broken exhaust studs we weld nuts or bolts to the broken pieces to extract them. the joys of the rust belt.
@@dehoyosrudolph8885 Planned short working life by GM to ensure profitable dealer repairs after warranty expires. On the GM 4 cylinder Ecotec type engines, many, if not most, of the exhaust manifolds crack in the middle, but the crack is under a heat shield that is seldom removed. Once the heat shield is removed the cracks are readily visible from the carbon tracks left by the escaping exhaust. Having an ever-present exhaust leak also ensures that the O2 sensor on the manifold is not making a correct measurement and the mixture is always out of sync with factory specs. Other design problems in these smaller engines reduce engine life. The V-8s work well if you change the oil and filters, and follow the Wizard's advice.
My dad used to own a 2010 F150 which had a ticking sound on cold starts. We thought the worst (timing tensioners or worn roller followers) . To our surprise it had an exhaust manifold leak on both sides. We didn't think about that at first because it was a CA truck its whole life and only 130K miles. What I'm saying is those bolts can fail even in the sun belt LOL
Love your channel. Not being a hater. Been a GM tech for over 20 years. To get manifold bolts out I use a mig welder to build the broken bolt up and then turn it out with vise grips or weld a nut to the broken stud and turn out. After removing manifolds
I bought one of these '12' based on your walk around videos of these trucks. I sought out the 4.8l to avoid the lifter problems of the 5.3, i dont tow a bunch so no lack of power issue. Keep up the good work!
These are really good trucks, Chevy makes an amazing, simple, and reliable truck. I had a red one of these with 250k miles and it ran absolutely perfect, original motor and trans. Chevy designs stuff to just work as expected for a long time, and I’m not a fanboy. The gmt800 platform was a little more reliable, but these ones look nicer and have a better interior!
I have the 2009 silverado 4.8 version that runs like new with 124k miles. Those sway bar links were shot when I realized a clunk noise at acceleration. They were swap out along with the engine mounts that were also gone. Now, runs like a champ!
We have a winner! My 5.3L, 2008 had some busted exhaust bolts too! And of course some front end bits and pieces needed replacement, and rust. Have put the most bucks into rust repair, including having the frame and undercarriage sand-blasted and painted. But darn reliable unit overall and am shooting for 250K miles out of the old beast!
I have a 2011 Silverado 1500 5.3. I’m amazed you didn’t touch on the lifter issue with the 5.3 engines, and deleting the “displacement on demand” feature. Also torque converters are terrible. Mine went at 106k miles, and I had to replace the torque converter and the transmission. Keep your chin up Car Wizard. Everyone has good and bad days. Thanks for the fun videos and the information.
I have an 08 Silverado with the 4.8 and similar mileage, you really nailed it on the common issues and the door locks are a common issue too. I've replaced sway bar end links, shocks and suspension bushings by this point but in fairness I've done that in most of my vehicles by 120k miles. The thing that stands out about these trucks and why I still keep running mine is the total cost of ownership has been crazy low. Tires are expensive but have a long mileage life, service costs are low, and working on them is easy so even the time quoted to fix issues isn't bad.
I’ve done normal maintenance and surprisingly had transmission cooler lines start leaking. Replaced those 2 yrs ago myself. A few batteries, tires, door handles failed and replaced. The electric locks driver and passenger just started only working half the time. Out of all vehicles owned the 09 Silverado has cost the least to keep going
My brother has an 09 with 5.3 my 08 with 4.8 will smoke my brothers off the line and top end.my traction control sucked ,my only complaint ,sucker broke ,now my truck will smoke the tires into second gear. Broke is actually fixed as for as my traction control goes
I get what you're saying Wizard, but at the same time do keep in mind that, not every one is as lucky and Blessed as you are. People are going through a real tough time. Wouldn't hurt to be a bit understanding I suppose........ Anyhow all the best to you!
my 2008 also had the AC buttons in ruff shape. Found some new covers for the buttons on Amazon. Works GREAT. I only have about 75k miles on it. bought it 3 or 4 years now.
As a matter of PM I replaced the oil pickup o-ring on our 2011 with 117k miles. You can usually tell by the oil pressure dropping slightly more at idle. Oil sender/screen was fine, don't overlook that. The o-ring is a common item on the 5.3 and 6.0.
@@jkeelsnc The other thing is: If someone watches this YT channel, then they know Omega's business; and if they can get their car to KS, then they can afford repairs. (Maybe no other nearby mechanic will take them?) If the shop wants to help someone struggling in the local area, that's a nice thing to do. But I'd suggest that from now on, Omega not accept any out-of-state customers without a referral. It's a private business, not a public utility.
@@jkeelsnc "I think he might get frustrated with stupid people who think he works for free. Some people never think about all the overhead costs that are associated with running his shop. Prices for vehicles will become more realistic in the next year or two when the computer chip supply finally catches up to demand. The prices for vehicles are insane right now. Unless your current vehicle is literally falling apart, better to wait until the car market has settled.
Or hope like I did you find someone thats unaware of whats going on in the used car/truck market who doesn't know scan tools exist. I managed to buy a 2001 chevy s10 zr2 with just 91,000 miles still great looking for $1,300 and all I've had to do to it was put in a new crankshaft position sensor and door hinge kit on the drivers door. The previous owner had someone replace all the brake lines and new distributor car, plugs and wires instead of taking the truck and getting it scanned for free at somewhere like Advance. So theres still a few deals out there. It took me less than 20 minutes to install a new crankshaft position senor and it runs great. I've had people offer me $4,500 if I'd sell it but I needed a truck so I'm keeping it. It was a one owner truck the owner was just clueless and anytime anything he owns has an issue he sells it rather than fixing it.
dont think it will for a long time. when u start seein elec.chargin plugs next to the gas pumps u will no weve got another change we have to go thru. like when i started seein unleaded pumps next to leaded an sayin i will never put that crap in my car.
I bought my first brand new car 3 months ago becuase I really needed a reliable vehicle with AC. I would have never bought a brand new car up until I saw what the used car market was like at the time (and right now). It was almost the same price for a new car as it was for a few year old used car. Made no sense to buy used with prices how they are. So I ended up buying a 2021 kia soul S with a 10 year powertrain warranty... now I don't have to worry about mechanical issues for a long long time, and if I do it's not being paid for by me. It gets over 30mpg and I love it so far. People make fun of kia but they are better than nissan or ANY domestic car brand I can think of for value and reliability.
6:15 -- Wizard could you please start using a stick or a laser pointer or something to point to things in the engine bay? Hard to tell what you're referring to.
The general public can be really good at being unpleasant, to say the least. You’re speaking truth, and being straightforward; that doesn’t make you unpleasant. A little humanity in the videos is great, you dont have to be the car guru wizard robot all the time. It was refreshing!
Pretty spot on, I got a 2011 model with 235,000 . The oil sensor turned out to just be the screen clogging up, cruise control was a 20 dollar fix, and I've thought the rear main has been leaking for awhile now. Going out there straight way in the morning to see if its just the plate. If so I'm going to mail you $50 for the Info alone, lol - Thx
Its just a little plastic module on the side of the gas pedal. Get on UA-cam and search for " 2011 Silverado cruise control module replacement" its the same from 07-14 GM Trucks@@thomasjefferson2934
Those Chevys are SO easy to get the broken exhaust manifolds out. I Never had to drill on the Chevys, I build a booger out on the bolt and remove with channel locks or stripped bolt remover on the mug weld buildout.
When you deal with the public you can be excused for being a little grumpy. I was a small custom home builder and I loved every part of it, except dealing with the buyers. They were always trying to steal my profits. Excellent video and that looks like a pretty nice truck.
DAYUM!!! "I am not going to charge you less because I'm a good mechanic!" EXACTLY!!! Preach it brother!!! Two beautiful nuggets of wisdom in one video! And I ain't even done watching yet!
My mechanic charges high end, but the quality is high end. My forever performance car only goes there. I like the wizard's dialogue and being up front in these videos.
That was my thought. Sure, ok to a skilled technician an easyout is well, easy. I could easily bet most people have not a clue in how to use them in the first place let alone own a set. I know how to use them should it require, but I've got better things I could be doing and god knows a half hour isn't likely. My luck would be hours and a 12 pack of beer and a day off work. A few busted knuckles to make it even more obvious of my bad decision. lol.

@@vcdrny Your right. It's also a perfect time to change things like the pvc valve and coil itself. Certainly clean the throttle body, it's closer to you after all. But what's really tough is changing the plugs on a Toyota highlander. Not only is that engine tilted towards the firewall, but you've got remove the plenum and associated vacuum lines. It's a job, but might as well make the best of it by doing other preventive maintenance. Again, perfect opportunity to clean things like the throttle body. Plus you'll save about $250-$300 bucks by doing it yourself. Just take a lot of pictures and don't feel nervous to use some kind of scribe to mark your work.
It's a pain in the ass. I only had one bolt break but there was some shaft still sticking out and it backed it out with vice grip's. Got lucky it wasn't broke flush with the head. Still a pain in the ass to get to that rear bolt
It's a bargain price for only charging 30 min per bolt. It sucks to do regardless of what vehicle it is due to the limited space and line of sight. Oh yeah, better do yourself a favor and get some carbide drill bits. You'll thank me later.lol
Just did a 1900mi trip in my 02 2500HD 4x4 6.0 gas. Used lots of fuel but had zero issues. I'm at 219k miles and depend in it daily. Stay away from the 1/2 tons with active fuel management though, unless you budget cash for deleting this poor attempt at fuel economy. Very low cost of ownership and very comfortable to travel in. Easy to work on, easy to get parts for, etc.
I'm actually really glad for this video. Just bought an '11 Silverado, and because of this found that exact leaky seal where the optional oil cooler can go and discovered I had a pretty bad oil leak coming from right there (it's a lil different than the '08, but doggone near similar). Thank you sir!
"If you think that's too high -- you drill it out." Been there, done that -- I would pay an HOUR'S labor per bolt not to have to do THAT again!!! Seriously some of the worst work imaginable!! So hard to get at, in the first place, and trying to stay centered on the bolt while drilling and leaning over the fender, etc., etc., etc... Hell to the no. I'll pay a pro to do it. I'll never EVER do that again myself.
That is the voice of experience. I've learned that if a shop says it'll take 1 hour to do something, it will take me 3. Not to mention several days of recovering from aches and pains. On my travel trailer I had to replace all 4 sets of brake assemblies which includes the electromagnet backing plate. 4 bolts per wheel. Should be easy. Forgot about what it's like to deal with rusty bolts. That job took me all day long. At the end of the day I could barely walk because of having to get up and down off the ground. I won't be doing that again.
Had this happen on my 2010, totally understand why you charge what you do, I had a shop do mine and they drilled into the head to far and hit the coolant passage

Thanks Wizard. I just replaced my drivers side exhaust manifold bolts--no more ticking-so I didn't have a lifter problem. Also one side sway bar end link was gone. Still checking the oil sender for leaks. Thanks so much for your videos. I have worked on cars all my life, but still don't know all the tricks you share.
Yep, you’re right Mr Wizard, I was given a 2013 1500 z71 4x4 with 280k. Everything you stated needs fixed. And I was lucky enough to inherit the dreaded AFM lifter issue which I have already addressed. Thanks for the insight. Your knowledge is appreciated.
Trick I heard about frozen or broken bolts. Lot of PB blaster. Then, the trick is not loosening once you get started. You turn out a couple turns then pb blast turn back in then wait a bit and then back out little further. Do that back and forth and eventually you could get bolt out without breaking it.
I'm from NH and it's wild to me that they sell those trucks in 2wd as anything other than an absolute base model. Even most of the work trucks I see are still 4x4
I had a 4x4 for years but I rarely needed it. I replaced it with a 2WD Colorado. In the winter I put winter tires on the rear and I carry crushed rock and a shovel. Much more practical. I don’t drive routinely in snow, but I want to be ready for it.
I hope your day got better! But I appreciate an opportunity to learn from you anytime, you don't have to pretend to be having a great day or be in a good mood for us. Thank you for your time.

Being a good mechanic means you get to keep being a mechanic and continue to get happy customers that trust in your work. It does not entitle you to charge for more hours than you actually put in. If your hourly shop rate is established then that is the labor rate per hour. In other words it's the number of hours it took to complete the job multiplied by that rate. It's Anything beyond that is defrauding the customer. That's why there's a Chilton guide for each job giving the maximum billable hours. This takes into account the worst possible case for each job including mistakes and unforseen difficulties. This is done to put a cap on how much a mechanic can potentially charge but dishonest mechanics will charge the maximum for each job regardless of how much time they put into it. A lot of times it the shop owner pocketing the extra money but his employees are only seeing their hourly wages anyway.
Yep, I agree. If a mechanic is gonna have that attitude, drop the whole "per hour" rate , and just tell customers "this is the fee I charge for this job".
@car wizard I know what you are saying. I've been in IT, 20 years plus. All the experience leads me to solve issues quicker. Same for you. EXPERIENCE is the asset people don't understand. I understand! (hope this came across correctly)
That's the main thing the numpties and cheapasses in this thread don't ever seem to understand; gaining useful experience takes time and money to acquire, it's never "free".
I've got an '03 suburban. Have had MOST of the issues that you've told us about in your videos on these trucks. That said, it's a GREAT truck. I fix what I can myself, but between old age and spare time, I can't keep up with it all of the time. Wish I could find an honest, competent mechanic like you down here near Dallas. My go-to guys keep retiring.....:)
Lmao. I love when mechanics like the wizard put their foot down and explain how and why they and other good technicians charge the amount they do. It reminds me of customers asking me at my car wash "why doesn't the timer turn off in the self serve bay at your car wash"?!?! And you actually have to explain to them so that they can not wash your car in the self serve for the next 5 hours at the cost of 4 dollars. Lol
I'm grateful I learned from you one big thing. I can do the job in 45 minutes but the job bills at 3 hours. Can't fault a guy for being good. That has helped me so much. Funny note my work truck is the 2010 2500HD is has the lifter tick sound from broken bolts but the boss is like ain't dead yet...

"I'm not gonna give myself a pay cut for being a good mechanic" -- Totally legit. But more importantly, if I bring my car in to be fixed, they tell me what the book rate is to fix it and I say OK, it's really none of my damn business if the wrench is good enough to do it in half the time.
Book time an estimated time all shops can quote, if a mechanic is experienced and time efficient good for him, if the job is done right by a pro people shouldnt care if he did it in half booktime
Way I see it, I might pay the same as I would at another shop, but I get my car back a day or two earlier than I would at those places. I consider that a good investment.
Me too, I like these trucks because they are, like he said in this video, easy to work on, but at least where I live the people that drive them don’t use them for anything other than a status symbol among other idiots that drive the same thing, listen to the same music and have the same pit bull in the truck.

Wizard, one major service item on the GMT900 series is the O-ring on the oil pickup line. It can be done on ramps in about 3-4 hours on a 2WD (RWD) truck but will take much longer on a 4WD truck due to axles. Doing this really prolongs the life of the motor as the AFM along with the weakened O-ring can starve the motor for oil after several years/mileage.
@@charlesmckinley29 Yes definitely, most people just replace the oil pressure sensor at the top of the motor but it's the O-ring on the oil pickup line that actually resolves the low oil pressure issues.
@@charlesmckinley29 You're welcome - I did this job on my 2014 truck that I purchased in 2017 with approximately 120K miles on it. The pickup line came off the tube with no resistance. Money is tight for them, and rather than work something out with me, they just go right into insults and attacking me. Kinda got to me guys. Again. No more grumpy videos. I promise.
Appreciate this reply. We all learn a lot from the videos.
That was grumpy?
Yeah, that was pretty bad. Just turn people away if being uncooperative, it doesn't look like there's a shortage of incoming work. I enjoy working on things but didn't want to deal with automotive customers (retail auto parts was bad enough), so went to A&P school and work on aircraft
It's just business
Figures, 2020.
“I’m not gonna give myself a pay cut for being a good mechanic” the realist statement by a mechanic
No apologies needed. It's not a charity. If people don't want to pay the book rates let them fix it themselves.
' If you dont like it - _YOU_ do it' . I think that needs to be a T-shirt.

@MADDCHOPER68 I'm with you. I'd be happy to drive Big Red coast to coast right now.
Comfortable as an old Cadillac.
@lindanelson8400 I need an update, is she still running?
I love the questions from Mrs. Wizard! If “running at the high rpms is bad for the motor” and “when do you need to drill out the exhaust bolts”. I’m trying to pick up as much as I can about cars and maintenance and the extra context from her questions (staged or not) is so nice
My man said “I’m not gunna give myself a pay cut for being a good mechanic” fuckin right!

Im in southern Ontario and when we get these trucks ( rams and F150 s as well) with broken exhaust studs we weld nuts or bolts to the broken pieces to extract them. the joys of the rust belt.
He doesn’t explain why the exhaust bolts break?
That's what my mechanic says as well although he didn't give an estimate on time per bolt (I have 3).

Lifter issues happen but not to every truck.
4.8l is a much better engine over 5.3l. No afm
I have the same. No rust same miles. No problems other than regular oil change. Brake pads. And tires and a new battery. Awesome truck.

Trick I heard about frozen or broken bolts. Lot of PB blaster. Then, the trick is not loosening once you get started. You turn out a couple turns then pb blast turn back in then wait a bit and then back out little further. Do that back and forth and eventually you could get bolt out without breaking it.

these are also notorious for the fuel sending unit fittings rusting thru causing a fuel leak, i live in michigan so salt is an issue.
Bet you see lots of brake lines
Yep mine just started leak lmao. Start the bitch up and smell fumes
Fingers cross that the Active Fuel Management can last 200K without much issues
Buy a programmer and turn it off
"Without much issues?" Does that include replacing the worn camshafts due to the oil starvation GM's flawed fuel miser system inevitably causes?
Brian Weir, like mentioned turn off afm with software and run it. I had 230k on my Tahoe with the last 50k turned off without issues and no oil burning with that done.
@@dbrandon4528 no can do. New PCMs are locked up tight. Only thing anyone can do so far is turn off the auto start stop.
@@mph5896 you can't on the new trucks. You can't get into the programming. Only option is a fresh PCM that isn't locked, but that's 10k right now. Any attempt to alter the new PCM saves to an unwipable file and reports to GM when they go to service it and doing so will void the warranty. Sucks for those of us wanting to tune our trucks for E85.
I have had a few jobs done locally and both of them gave me a firm price and stuck to it ,they get all my business and I recommend them to freinds.
Wow, that one has never had an alignment. Still has the factory plugs in the cams on the upper control arms.
Lol
My 2005 avalanche has 331k original miles, 5.3ls runs an drives great,
I'm grateful I learned from you one big thing. I can do the job in 45 minutes but the job bills at 3 hours. Can't fault a guy for being good. That has helped me so much.
Funny note my work truck is the 2010 2500HD is has the lifter tick sound from broken bolts but the boss is like ain't dead yet...
I have a 2012 Suburban with 85,000 problem free miles. I use it to tow my trailer in the summer - has tow-package. Always use tow / haul mode button when towing as per Car Wizzard. At next service I plan to change all fluids and spark plugs / due at 90,000 miles. I have fluid-film treatment done every year to prevent rust issues. Love my Sub.
"I'm not gonna give myself a pay cut for being a good mechanic" -- Totally legit. But more importantly, if I bring my car in to be fixed, they tell me what the book rate is to fix it and I say OK, it's really none of my damn business if the wrench is good enough to do it in half the time.
You're paying for the experience of the mechanic.
And sometimes they’re able to complete the job faster because they have better more specialized tools, which is a big investment.
Exactly. Most people don't know what a book rate is though.
I feel like Wizard likes the truck but doesn’t like the customers that’s owned them 😂
Anybody that buys a 100+k miles GM truck is an idiot.
Me too, I like these trucks because they are, like he said in this video, easy to work on, but at least where I live the people that drive them don’t use them for anything other than a status symbol among other idiots that drive the same thing, listen to the same music and have the same pit bull in the truck.
That’s usually how it is. That or you like the customer but not their car lol when I worked in a shop there was some customers who were very nice people but every time you saw them you’re like “fuuuuuuuck”
@@mfslyphantom8811 Late Model GM trucks are easy to work on? ROFMAO ! 50+ years as a master level factory certified auto/truck tech, I know that, from experience, is false.
I have no doubt this guy knows his business. I'm sure he works hard and deserves to be paid for his labor, but customers are typically not mechanically inclined...doesn't make them bad or inferior people. Thinking of them as idiots or fools..not good. Your thoughts project out and people pick up on it. The guy admitted he was grumpy....I'd go a little farther and say he I an @$$hole. Aren't we all.
Agreed, it's a source of low oil pressure
Is this why my oil pressure drops more than I think it should in overdrive? 40 psi when accelerating then drops to 20 psi.
@@charlesmckinley29 Yes definitely, most people just replace the oil pressure sensor at the top of the motor but it's the O-ring on the oil pickup line that actually resolves the low oil pressure issues.
@@99Vood99 thank you.
@@charlesmckinley29 You're welcome - I did this job on my 2014 truck that I purchased in 2017 with approximately 120K miles on it. The pickup line came off the tube with no resistance. I've heard that it literally drops off or disintegrates on older trucks with higher miles. The new O-ring is a tight fit and the overall engine noise also decreased. Good luck with your replacement!
Another item that goes bad on LS engines, is the O-ring on the oil pump pick up. Dash gauge will show low, usually under 40 psi.
Got a 2012 Silverado 4.3 runs perfect . Learned to run it at high
rpm ,glad it's ok . Changed trans filter and fluid at 90,000 with some
Lucas added . Change Mobil 1 often
enough . New struts at 112,000 , simple to do . Great truck
Love the Ford tones nicely done.
So when the Car Wizard is using his ESP it sounds like you left the key in a Ford vehicle?
He cracked me up when he made Tyler a 20,000 bill super hilarious 😂!
I totally get your frustration Wizard - I deal with idiots everyday at work and people seem to need babysitting all the time! People are more naggy since lockdown too. You are human! Takes a strong person to apologise. Love what you do.
also good to replace the spare tire carrier if you get one of these. not fun having your spare stuck when you need it
Tell me. My 2010 the spare was never down. Had to cut it loose to get at evap module to replace it as was stuck open.
You have fast become one of my favourite UA-camrs. Great job Wizard.
One of my friends bought a 2008 brand new with the 5.3 and AFM. He was a high mileage driver and the truck never made it to 100,000 miles. He needed new litters and all kinds of engine parts and gaskets replaced. All that before it was even paid off. He sold it at a loss and got a tundra.
Drilling out exhaust bolts? Reminds me of retapping headbolts in the Northstar #notfun
Also uneeded because the heads are aluminum and a nut welded on removes them in minutes
@@DegeN.YNation Except when the threads get stripped out and you have to redo them to upgrade the head studs...
And why they break I find is catalytic catalytic converter failure when old and clogged up.
Thanks for the great info. Brutally honest, no sugar coating. Im unfortunately looking into used trucks in this market and youve given alot of great points.
Thank you Wizard, this video was for me- I just purchased a 2008 GMC Sierra with 132,000 miles.
Use a welder no need to drill them out
That's cool if you've got a welder. Some of us guys haven't got the bucks for a welder. I guess we shouldn't own a vehicle then?
HF welder 100 bucks done
Wizard came off as an angry mechanic In this one. Should do a whole series of “customer says”
He always like that, actually.
I worked in the business for 45 years, Mr. Wizard is mild, you haven't seen angry!
You haven't seen an angry mechanic yet. Wizard isn't even a chain smoker yet.
Yeah dude, Wizard is forever tired of everyone's bullshit.
I agree. He sounds bitter AF. Basically the whole video, he just justifies why he charges what he does.
I think it’s kind of fup that it would take 45min to do but you charge for 3 that’s why people don’t trust most mechanics
Thanks a lot for the video man it was super detailed . I’m picking up a high mileage 09 . 200,000 miles still runs strong . If you put a little time and money into these trucks they last forever
I have an 09 at 156k and runs great and looks great. It’s our family truck for all things leisure.
Love those 8.1L 496 cubic inch V8s. Have one in my 2003 GMC 3500 dump truck. And man that thing can pull anything and everything without going over 2,500 RPMs. People also don’t know that the 8.1 setup has an Alison transmission mated to it. I’ll run it til the wheels fall off.
And don’t worry about being grumpy! People don’t seem to understand that work is money. And you do QUALITY work. You’re probably one of the best mechanics in the country. And your prices are WELL WORTH. If people don’t like it, then like you said, THEY can do it. Good work, good sir! Keep it up!
