  • An effective (and simple) way to process your emotions can be done by doing specific writing exercises. When we journal our emotions we are able to see them almost through a third party view point which can give us more clarity, and help us understand better what's going on inside of us.

Hey guys. I started writing my thoughts in 2020 with the intention to try to understand my feelings and thoughts and this became an habit that helped me to deal with anxiety and internal conflict.

I always learn new skills from your teaching. I awoke this morning. I was angry. It was over a long brewing misunderstanding and a person’s procrastination.
    You taught me to journal.

Thanks so much for this! I’m getting over a mental health crisis of my own, so much to process and I need to dig deeper. I’ve always thought about journaling but finally started around the holidays. I love writing and have filled many pages but these tips will really help when I know I have something to write about but don’t really know what it is or where to start.

I grabbed my laptop and wrote an email to myself of all the thoughts, feeling and emotions that have been running around in my head since getting out of bed. It felt freeing to acknowledge them all. The not so fun ones I acknowledged and I think somehow they appreciated that I did. I just wrote and wrote. I just replayed back the first 4 hours of my day. It wanted someone to notice. And I wanted someone to tell it all too. Thanks Julia...this is a great tool for me. It helps to give me some balance back. It's a self love act.

Seconds before you said "cathartic" I had already a strong hunch you were going to use that word. It truly best explains writing as a whole.

Julia this is something that I have been waiting for as a writer. I try to write out things that are going on through fictional writing and i dont know if thats a good strategy as well, but I do want to try Point A and B, writing letters, and just the rough draft style. Thank you always for your posts I look forward to them weekly.

Dragon boy this is a great idea for some people who suppress and stuffed our emotions. You can process via a character and even emphasize with the character, and therefore emphasize with yourself.

Thank you🎉 walking around barely able to breathe and seeking some guidance on how to use the tool of writing and this has led me to connecting one of my present issues of anxiety and not breathing to how I felt like that as a young child. Very grateful for the assist on making this connection!!!🎉

Hi Julia Kristina, I recommend your videos to my college students because my dumb old college has cannibalized counseling services. I'm glad you're here, you always touch on something important I need to hear. I grew up with two very dysfunctional parents, alcoholic father, and mother addicted to "her man," no matter what abuse he inflicted on us kids. I really think journaling when I was a teen, kept me from running away from home and self destructing. Thanks for your wonderful insightful videos. Be well.

Thank you so much for this! This saved me so much money on therapy. I probably still need it but this gives me a starting point to functionally identify the things I'm feeling. I am aware of my emotions and how it impacts the peoole i am around and I always don't know how to manage and or process it positively. So I am looking forward to doing this. Xx

I agree journalling is a great way to work through feelings. I find forcing yourself to find the words to write down forces you to find concrete words rather than have vague, nebulous thoughts. It helps you say to yourself. "Is that what l really mean?" I find using pen and paper is better than typing. I think there is more of a brain to hand connection than with typing.

    Hi Coach! Shifter here!
For some reason number 5 is a difficult one for me...as soon as I try to visualize my goals the experiences or things I want in life my brain still wants to reject that I am capable and makes me more sad because it is like showing me what I can have or achieve....but I also know In not entitled to any outcome.

Thank you Julia, i'll definitely be using the intentional self journal. I've dabbled in journaling, but mainly cause that's what others said to do to help feel better, but this was the first time I've had the context and benefit of journaling presented in a way I can connect to. I didn't even realize I had been doing the SFD method using audio journaling as I drive home from work. All I knew was that when I did that on days where my mind was most congested and stressed, i'd end up feeling more at ease by the time I reached my destination.
My friend brought me to your channel, and it's been an invaluable resource for this moment in my life and for my personal growth. I know I have lots of work ahead of me, but you've dispelled much of the fear and frustrations i've had with putting in that work on my emotional well being.

I like integrating different styles of writing to express myself or a specific topic matters.
I use lyrics to express innocence, poetry to express self, dialogue to breakdown a discussion palatable for ease of weight, prompts and affirmations for motivation, and true story for dose of reality.
Then there's open discussion about future endeavors. 👍
Thank you beautiful person and all my love to you and wee, I'm so glad 😊 that Julia Kristina Counseling UA-cam channel is here.

1, and 3 I have done. I think 4 would be beneficial. I have done something similar with grief where I wrote letters to loves that I have lost and had a lot of closure. I think writing the angry letters and not sending them would help me process my anger. Number 5 really intrigues me. I think I'm going to try the intentional self journal. I'm a natural planner, so having a plan of growth would be helpful.

This seems worth mentioning: When you're a kid and the teacher gives you a writing assignment, you deal with things like anxiety towards getting a bad grade and not having the writing skills of an adult. That doesn't apply here so you can use that to your advantage.

I started to journal off and on when I bought Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way. She suggested the morning pages of writing 3 pages every day in a stream of consciousness. Brain dump is what it feels like. It doesn't have to make sense. It's freeing.
The shitty first draft, I love that idea. I'm working on writing for real and a shitty 1st draft is a great idea instead of stress of staring at a blank page.
Point B to A is something I want to try.
    Thank you!

Thank you for this video. It reminded me to get back to journaling. Things have been going good partly because I have been journaling up until about a week ago. Today I am going to get back to it though. I will just start writing it down again. I have been studying three different commentaries on the story of Adam and Eve in the garden, and the fall of man. What an interesting investigation here. That story may have an answer to all of our problems, I don't know, I have so much more to learn from that. I have been reading a book by John Bradshaw. Healing The Shame That Binds You. There is so much in that book that makes me have a closer look at myself and it is healing me. OK, I have to get with it. I have a lot to journal today, and every day. I am so glad you brought this up Julia, it is a Godsend.

Wondering if you could flash your preamble instead of saying it aloud- anyone who has seen your videos, who has OCD- like me, has probably learned to skip the first 2 to 3 minutes so we can get to the subject matter. My OCD is triggered by repetitive language- not trying to nit pick.

I have a question about this , as a trauma survivor and having to write out things for family law , I feel like I had to go from point A to point Z .. and it has caused some form of overwhelming processing and flashbacks . So when having to intentionally journal and ask for things and send it .. how the heck do you calm the trauma overwhelm for even asking for things ..

Call me a prude I guess, but your unprofessional speech isn’t helpful and honestly caused me to tune out and I doubt I’ll watch anything thing else you produce. There many descriptive words that can be used but it seems our world in general has become cruder and cruder and I hear enough of that on a daily bases that I have no desire to voluntarily subject myself to it. I have no doubt you mean well and that’s commendable. But your style isn’t for everyone and I’ll look elsewhere for what I’m looking for. I wish you all the best, thank you for wanting to be a helpful, positive influence in a place that can be so negative.

Julia the basis of your advice here is totally wrong.
You are seeing the emotions as yours when they are not.
Thoughts, which are not your own, leads to emotions which leads to you overreacting.
This is how emotions control you.
You can do 5, 7 or even 12 steps but when the basis of your advice is wrong,
The best you can help someone is a temporary relief from the emotions.
What you really want is for someone to have a permanent relief from emotions.
And that only comes with overcoming the emotions.
    Which happens with this understanding.
    Emotions are not yours.
