happy pi day! I return to your channel every year for instructional guidance since anime expo is a couple months from now and I always attend. I'd like to start learning making pieces casted in plastic soon, really glad to see I've come back in time with all these videos up. Thank you so much

I've been hearing this term tossed around all of the prop community, but since I haven't really been into casting things up until now (I'm still working on getting my foamsmith skills up to where I think they should be haha), it didn't really mean much to me. But, now that I'm getting ready to mold up and try to cast the sculpted masks that I made not long ago (another first!), watching this definitely dispelled the mysticism behind the word. Professional sounding terms always make techniques sound scary haha
I just made a Batman Dead End Cowl mold and cast it. Dude, 3D printing has made my life so fun. It opened the door to so many productive hobbies.

This may be a stupid thing to ask, but when creating a mask for my own face or designing something to roughly fit my face how would I go about in doing so? also great video, as someone who may want to try this kind of stuff sometime one day, maybe a couple of years from now your video was really confronting and good to watch.

Is it possible to slush cast silicone into a wood-like object? I want to coat the inside of a bottle-gourd with food grade silicone.
What is the best resin to use for slush casting? Or does it not matter?

This is a great video on rotocasting and answered a number of different questions I had about it. One question I do have is: When would you want to use rotocasting over vaccuforming for different molds? Is there a hard/fast rule for when you'd want to use one over the other?
So if it's a small/medium item with intricate detail, that's when you want to rotocast. Larger or simple/smooth items should be vacuuformed. Got it. Thanks!

When slush casting in a two part mold with a pour spout, how does the pour spout get filled in? Wouldn't there be a hole left where the pour spout is? Thanks :)
What if you have a relief sculpture, too large to rotate. Can you brush in the resin and will you see brush marks

Can you slush cast rubber? I need to make a smaller object, around 2"*2" I reckon, in a clear bendy/soft material, with a smaller 0.8"*0.8"ish object embedded in the middle. My idea was to slush cast a layer or two of clear rubber, place the object, and then continue with additional layers. At some point perhaps making the rubber pool in the middle around the object, more so than around the edges. To not get it too thick. I'd like to be able to make these on demand (but not a high volume thing). Is there a better way, or is this doable? I have someone who can help me do a silicone mold.
How is the product called you put in to reproduce? Is it liquid plastic? Is it Strong? Breakable? Safe to wear? Many thx

if you spray a release, would you be able to slush with rebound 25 to make the mask, even though you used rebound to make the mold?
that's risky, you'd be better off using a urethane rubber
I really got to ask, do you do any math when trying to figure out how much material you might need for a project? For both pouring silicone to make molds, and when pouring resins? Or has it always been an eyeballing for you?
Cool ! If ever I attempt to mold my iron man mask (if I manage to finish it fingers crossed :), do you think I could use metal powder to make it shine and metal looking or is it too "rough" ?

for the hard shell mold, could i use Plaster Of Paris as a substitute instead of using fiberglass?
ghoulstein stone moulds could work but you would have to strap it or find some other way to keep the two halfs together. And I would use a denser plaster like hydro cal. You really just need a ridged outer shell to keep the silicone from losing its shape. Good luck!

Bill, I'm thinking about using polyester resin for slush casting for a college project (replicating 19th century bottles). Is it possible? I nead it to be glass like and kind of a cheaper resin.
I've read thet it gets to a gel consistence in about 5 to 10 minutes and then you cant work it any more.
How do I order a prop?
My slush cast never comes out right. Either to thin, cast pools more to another side so one side is thicker than the other. Do you have a video on how to make a mask like this with a back mold to push in so the mask is even on all sides?
Make a cast of the mould (that is a female mould so you will have the reverse i.e a male counterpart). Use fiberglass for rigidity and keep the layers light. Alternatively you can vacuum form or maybe even use a plaster cast if no access to a vaccuum forming machine!
Did you make the initial dragon mask, or was that purchased? If purchased, could you provide link please?

hello I was wondering is there a type of polyurethane rubber that I can roto cast with? I want to make a hollow rubber flexible casting of some custom action figure clothing I have made but I can't find anything that works. The stuff I use is flex it 90 and it cures way too fast. Like 3 mins. Could you please advise me with this?

Whenever you are finishing your mask what method do you use to cut out the eyes?
I've got a cutting wheel on my rotary tool that does the job quite well, but the resin is thin enough that a sharp blade works too.
I really want to know how to add texture(leather in my case) to a master.I was looking thru your vids but didn't find anything. Please help

Any tips on how to keep resin from building up in a deep crevice such as a nose (particularly an elongated nose)?

An ounce or two for each layer. Every mask is going to be different so you'll have to experiment.
WOuld this method work for casting a proton pack shell? is the finished product strong enough to handle building a pack? made my shell with a 3d printer
That's a great question! As long as you reinforced the inside with fiber glass I think you'd probably be okay?

Slush casting is pretty reliable, since you can see the resin as you cast to make sure you get a nice, even coat.

If you were casting in silicone, you could use plaster. But you typically don't want to use a rigid mold making material for rigid casts.

+thomas mccarthy That comes with practice. You try to slush it well over the edges of the mold. It will get messy.

You can use whatever you want! We recommend a couple coats with 2 kinds of resin, one hard and one slightly more flexible. Onyx is a great hard resin.

If I can't get a hold of smooth-on resin, what resin would you recommend I could use that is skin safe?
Once cured the chemical is inert meaning it should be safe providing no amounts of dust reside on the surface even then will just be itchy for most people, that being said doesn't take 5 seconds to wash dust off :)

Like a sword blade? You can, but you'll want to take care to add support of some kind, as thin casts can be very flexible, even after fully curing.
is epoxy resin a good substitute?
It might be tough for slush casting - epoxy resin is designed to slowly cure over time. For slush casting you ideally want a resin that cures in 10 minutes or less to get a good, even coating.
Does this method work with latex/foam gloves?

you can use a utility knife to cut it and carefully use a dremel to smooth it, or you can use some sandpaper.

Pfou, I tried this and Its notbas easy as I though. I didn't take into account that the resin would pool into the cavities, and since the inside of the mold is exactely the shape of my face it takes away space for my nose, lips, chin....

*Old school here! That is Not slush casting, Any casting that involves revolving the mould to coat the interior is Roto casting, even if you are Roto casting with your hands. True slush casting explicitly does not involve rotating a mould. True slush casting is filling a resin with a material that does not run or shift when put in the mould and slopping and slushing over a gel coated interior. Like a mat strand filled resin. Slush is medium that holds itself together. this is bad education.*
Make some molds, but use you own master.
