- We needed a head model for a costume helmet fitting, so we made a head mold from Alginate and cast it out of the plaster Hydrocal.

Ive done this twice, once on myself (with help of course) and to a friend. both times I only did the face though, didnt need the back of the head. People complaining that it looks weird, after you take the cast out you take a few tools and sand out the bumps and hollow out the nostrils too, he just didnt quiet finish as far as you would for a clean model.
Great Job Bill! This is such a fun project. I still have a front cast of my face from 16 years ago. Got to make a new one. :-) One thing I would add that really works and is quicker to apply for separating the front and back halves of the plaster mother mold is wet paper towels. :-)

i read somewhere that you need 25-30 pounds of ultracal to fill a mold around this size, amazon has some for around 17 bucks, but its not very practical because they are 5lb bags. i would suggest searching for a 50lb bag online i found some at a store locally for about 35 dollars. i am going to be attempting this later this week and i'm just gathering info and supplies.
What if I want to put real hair on top of the mold?
Id add that for people not used to breathing through their nose, to get the person getting moulded to inhale some vics or olbas oil or anything that helps clear the nose and make breathing easier. Ive only had my face cast but damn i needed that inhalant alot.
+Bill Doran Another good thing to do for helping them breathe is have them stick short lengths of plastic tube in their nose. This means you can apply a good layer of the alginate around the nose for a strong cast without worrying about blocking their airway. When the alginate is still quite liquid they can clear the tube while someone holds it still so they don't snort it out as well, and then as it solidifies you can change the tube if needed before adding the plaster bandages. This worked very well at our university for people who were worried about not being able to breathe because we had one person there just to make sure the tubes were clear for them, helped them to keep calm when they cannot hear you inside the mould.

Nice video many hands help is good for these large project. I have to say alginate is a little more forgiving then just an hour uses , did like what you did with the screws to combined the two halves though i believe clay would work just as well on the nose holes and seams instead of screws... looks fun keep rocking looks pro quality

Hi. What type of material to make a head cast will allow for the final product to have nails and pins go through it. I need to make a head cast as an art project. Once everything is peeled off to reveal the actual facial features ---> what type of material can I fill the head cast with that will allow me to insert nails and pins into it? Thanks.
That sounds like a cool project! I read the comments below, but I didn't see any comments that addressed my thoughts/questions. If I did I apologize. What I'm curious to know are the benefits of using this method over others such as silicone or others. I'm mostly ignorant on this stuff for forgive me for that too. Is it purely a cost benefit? Or perhaps time/preparation also?
Some complained about the quality of the casting, but I suspect that its the medium and not so much the technique. Silicon molds seem to be very crisp, but again at what cost or other draw backs.

Silicone will cost you 5 to 10 times as much and has a much slower setting time. Yes its better as you will have a reusable piece but tbh its overkill unless you need the very best end result.
In this case the quality of the final product was down to technique more than products used. But it was still a perfectly acceptable end product for their needs.
William Hayden Silicone is a multi use material, better if you need to make several of something. The additional cost far outweigh the price for multiple uses. Setup time is not much more if using the correct silicone.
I wonder how much they used of the plaster of paris for the model if the box was over enough. I was thinking of making my own and would like an estimate of how much would be accurately needed.

When you used silicone with I Like To Make Stuff, what material bald cap was that? Having trouble finding a non-latex bald cap.
It was probably silicone. You can usually find them wherever prosthetics are sold

I am actually doing this for a friend soon and it has been awhile since I did anything like this - this video reminded me how much fun I'm about to have. Now...You talked about getting multiple pulls from the silicone - how many do you think you might be able to do and is it easier to spread evenly than the alginate? I may not have 3 other pairs of hands so I'm worried about that part.
how heavy is the final product? also i was thinking of doing this bud making it to my neck, do you think its possible to make a layer of latex then use expanding foam so i could have a prop to carry around?

Great video, you keep stepping it up. I've had casts made of my hands and have cast other people's faces at various points, but never a full headcast. I think I'd get claustrophobic if I was being cast so that'll probably never happen :p

You'd want to sculpt on the bust then make a mold of the sculpt and cast it in silicone.

I too usually have 3 people on standby to help with casting....how about movie where you take a print of your own face on your own,slapstick comedy ensues.
What's the best method to use on a female with really, really long hair? Putting it all up in a shower cap makes a very big and alien-like knot (beehive).
Put her hair in a tight pony tail in the center back of her head. Braid and then Wrap her loose hair a few times with saran wrap (aluminum foil will rip and tear bald caps easily). Rubber band that, tightly so that it does not slip off during application. Cut a very small slit or hole in your bald cap, and pull her saran wrapped ponytail through the hole, making sure your material will not touch her loose hair or she's gonna be really upset lol. Alginate or silicone and plaster bandage around her ponytail. You will be able to plug the hole fairly easily from the inside with some more alginate, silicone or clay.

A 5 pound bag filled my mould about halfway, I'd just buy two quantities of what he has linked.

I have a project I hope to get some help on from you if you dont mind. I dont have any kind of social media so this maybe the only way we can communicate. I have a plaster mold of my head and I would like to make a mask out of clay but what I wanted to know is if there is a type of release that is needed to be used before I start placing the clay onto my plaster mold. Also, what type of clay would you recommend?

***** I know this is really late but there's two main reasons:
1. Plaster of Paris heats up as it cools, alginate cracks when it dries, so the plaster *could* ruin the the mold before it fully cures.
2. Hydrocal is much stronger than Plaster.

Pretty much, hydrocal is just stronger and denser then plaster. But if you use reinforcement like burlap or gauze strips plaster should work out.

+Galdrus Lock huh? The point of a lifecast is to get as accurate of a representation of someone as possible. You want to resculpt as little as possible. Typically it's just opening the eyes and opening up the nostrils. Pros don't use tubes anymore because there is no need, it's a bad idea.
Well then the absolute perfect life cast is where the person should die. I guess that would make it art. Watch some weirdo artsy dootsy group try it now.

Shave, or lots and lots of Vaseline aka petroleum jelly.

What about facial hair
Usually you can just apply a little Vaseline to the areas with hair to protect them from getting caught in the plaster. There is likely a different process for people with full beards, but it's possible that shaving for this process is the best option if a large amount of facial hair is present.

Oh man I can see this going horribly wrong for a novice, its been 8 years since this video. I have to wonder how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie roll tootsie pop? Like how many folks suffocated after watching this youtube video? My wise owl say the world many never know!! LMAO Why not just use strips of plaster applying to half of a models head and then the final half. Mark appropriately and then assemble both parts making the full bust. I disagree with the method you are using, especially for someone who has never utilized Alginate it can be tricky,.

+ShadowManV3 Why was it stupid? I like your idea of a bald cap, but why not phrase this suggestion in a positive manner vs a negative one. You'll be surprised by the responses you get. Also you assume to know the reasons behind the swim cap. Maybe it was out of expediency. Or perhaps it was good enough for the job at hand for less money.

I have had the displeasure of having alginate up my nose during a lifecast... It was my first time being under and the helper swiped it up right into both of my nostrils. I couldn't breathe and was hitting my hand on my leg. All I could hear was "Breathe out! Breathe out!" There is no air in my lungs, you TWAT! is all I could think. They grabbed a popsicle stick and scraped all the material out of my nose. I want to say a couple things.. First is that through out the process you want to check on how your model is doing. Regularly ask if they can breathe alright and have them give you a thumbs up.Alright process tips that will make life a little easier. #1 Weather stripping. Get some weather stripping and stick it from shoulder to shoulder over the top of the head. With a full head cast it helps with the seam and a halfcast it is where it will end. Then outline it where you want your lifecast to end. You only need as much space as what you're going to be using, it saves on materials.#2 Sharpie. Draw the person's hairline on the bald/swim cap, it will transfer to the alginate and then to the ultracal.#3 Burlap. For the face cut out pieces of burlap that roughly fit the forehead, cheeks, chin, and nose. when the alginate is starting to set up press those pieces into it, it reinforces the material and helps it from ripping.#4 PUH-LEEEEEEEEEEASE don't just dump the ultracal in there like that. A couple thin beauty coats first, then layer in thicker coats, as they start to cure mix up more ultracal and do another layer. It should be HALLOW. If not that is going to be one HEAVY lifecast.
