- This video will show you each step to making a modern style piano hinge coat rack. The only thing you need is one piece of wood (species of your choice) and a 3/8” dowel. Below you will find the exact dimensions and cut list that I used for this build.

List of all my tools: www.penaltybox...
1 - 24” Long x 6” Wide x 1 1/4” Thick board
Cut into alternating 1” and 2” wide sections.
All 1" sections will need a 45 degree bevel on both ends
Mark hole placement as shown in the video and drill a 3/8' hole through all 1" and 2" pieces using a stop block and a drill press for accuracy.
(I used Cherry)
1 - 3/8” dowel approx 30” long

Nice! Simple and elegant. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the kind comment
Nice video! I’ve never seen a coat rack built this way. I love the idea
Devin Richter Thanks! I actually had seen it before on UA-cam a long time ago. Easy to make!!!
looks great,,got to build me one
Very nice! Great thought on the design.
+Old Guy Woodworks Thanks man! Not my original design but I thought it was really neat as well.
Awesome video man. Great idea on the design too!
Walkers Woodworks Thanks Brando! Not my original idea but it was a fun little project!
Penalty Box Woodshop still awesome! Lol
I going to use this idea to make a drill sergeant hat holder at our unit! Great video dude!
Cameron Edmonds Should work perfect for that Cam!
Awesome work! 👍👊
Fred McIntyre Thanks Fred!
I love this! Thank you 😊
👊👊👍
Awesome project!!
Evergreen Cottage & Gardens Thanks friend! I appreciate that!
I might be makin’ one of these soon, great stuff jess!
Tiny Woodshop thanks man! Let me know if you need anything while making it! Always here to help
Great video!
how do you manage a straight keyhole without some type of edge guide?
anytime I do it, seems to go diagonal
This is epic!,
👍👍Thanks!
Enjoyed watching your build of this project. One question: Does the bottom of the rack tend to pry away from the wall when the hangers are deployed since an outward force is being applied to the bottom? Thanks
This video is awesome! How did you come up with such a cool design?
Corey S Thanks Corey! To be honest I saw this design on UA-cam hahaha
Good build...the one drawback with this design could be that the coats could easily slip off as you're trying to hang them...any issues with that?
Not at all. I’ve used it from everything from wet towels to hats to coats and don’t have any problems. The angle is pretty good for it
any tips on how to put agains the wall if you don't have a router?
You can buy hanger hardware to attach to the back of it and it would work just fine. I would recommend something that screws in and is rated for a decent amount of weight.
@@PenaltyBoxWoodshop thanks for the really fast reply. i'm gonna have a look at the hardware store Saturday!
No problem! Yea, you me local store should be able to help you find the correct hardware pretty quickly. I have an idea what you need but it’s hard to explain without being able to send links or pics haha
@@PenaltyBoxWoodshop feel free to e-mail me all the info you want : corneel.lenaerts92@gmail.com.
btw, i love all you work. really an inspiration!
Strip of wood or sheet of wood mounted on back then screwed into wall works too if ya wanna play with the design some.
Hi, if i do not have a router, how can a make the holes in the back? Or can i use some other metod?
Irving Gamallo Hey Irving, Yes you can use another type of hanging system. I would check with your local hardware store to see what type of system they would recommend. Just make sure it can hold a good amount of weight.
Thank you, i only have a few basic tools, i hope i can do it.
I have no doubt that you can! Let me know how it turns out!
I’ve seen some people add strips of wood or a thin sheet of wood on back to run screws into wall. Might be another option for ya.
i have all the 1 and 2 inch pieces cut and ready to drill the hole in each. van you elaborate more on how you 1) found the location on the 2 inch piece? i do not understand how you determined the second line. 2) how did you determine the hole location on the 1 inch piece?
Bill O'Rourke Hey Bill, basically I was just trying to find the center of the pivot point. Holding the piece flush to the back I make a mark on the angle. Then I pivot the piece as I would if it was on the wall and make the second mark once it’s fully pivoted. I then find the center of the piece coming straight off the point where the two lines touch at the back and that’s where I make my hole. When I drilled the hole on the drill press I set up a backer and a stop so that I could just set every other piece up there and in the same spot every time. Just making sure they were positioned the same way on each piece. This is the hardest part to explain so I really hope this helps
@@PenaltyBoxWoodshop thanks, that helps. I'll create a jig to hold the pieces so the holes align down the piece.
The tricky part is replicating the pivot as it would happen without a true pivot point. Sounds like you did more by feel than anything else?
Bill O'Rourke As with most my projects “feel” goes farther than measurements with me hahaha. As long as you have a good set up on your drill press that will allow you to replicate each hole then it should turn out just fine. I had a few that were slightly off but nothing that a little sanding didn’t take care of once it was all put together.
I've been wrestling with this for awhile. The "hinge" hole placement. Could someone walk me through the measurement technique you are using? The first measurement line is self explanatory but I lose you on the 2nd measurement.
ah-ha!! I got it.
What angle did you set your table saw at to cut the piano hinges? 45?
Cameron Edmonds Yea, 45 degree bevel on both ends. I just added that to the description. Sorry about that.
Very nice! A question: are the fixed blocks really necessary?
No, I just used them for ease of making alternating length cuts while keeping the continued grain pattern
And thank you!
