Looks lovely! 1:36 Offcut shop? Any chance of more info about how/where to get oak etc at a discount? B&Q, Wixkes etc don't cater for this and checking the net is a bit daunting due to the amount of results... Happy 2024 from Lord 🐼. X
I don't understand why you didn't simply *use longer screws and fix the rack to the wall **_through_** the coat hooks.* Just make two (or four) of them pass through the board and into wall anchors. No need for a third hole (or wood plug) _above_ the hooks. It would also make it much easier to disassemble in the future, because the screws wouldn't be covered by glued-in plugs.
Having fixings towards the top and bottom helps counter any small amount of warping. It is surprising how much a kiln dried piece of wood can still move when brought into a centrally heated very dry environment.
@@rogerphelps9939 - Er... how is that related to what I wrote? All fixings are at the same height, anyway (in both versions).

Did this recently and countersunk the fixings and then put the hooks over that. Anyway, really nice end product 👏🏼

Great video again,how about making a shoe rack for to match,noticed that the shoes were on the floor,this would free up some floor space don’t you think.
Right - and if you make a bench with shoe/boot storage cubbies below, you’d have a bench to sit on while you put your shoes on 🤷🏻 That’s what I’d do anyway!

If you’re looking for good quality coat hooks which are fairly priced, Toolstation have ball end coat hooks (made by Hiatt hardware). Much more attractive than the DIY store alternatives and better quality than a very similar product sold in B&Q.
Nice video stuart. I did something similar a few years ago, though without the benefit of a table saw or router table. One thought: when routing a profile on the edge of a board, do the end grain first so that any chips at the end of the cut are removed when you do the long grain sides. Keep up the good work!
Chuffin loads of room under those brackets to fully hide a screw! Not making loads of unnecessary work for yourself is such a valuable skill.
When holding up to mark holes put rubber tape or similar behind so it sticks in place with barely any pressure. Same for steadying longer spirit levels with one hand. ✌️
Looks great, be a job to take it down again though!
I made a very similar rack a while ago.
As for hiding the screws, I used some of the screws for the hooks themselves as the screws to the wall.
Oh, good idea, I have an oak rack to make and was going to hide my screws under the hooks, and will consider your idea.

You can buy kits where the countersink bit matches the plug cutter size exactly with no requirement to find a matching drill bit size. Excellent as always Stuart 👍
nice video. I've made the same except placed the wall fixing behind where the hooks are so no need to plug and nothing is visible. Even with those small hooks "back" its still possible to work out a position such that they hid the fixings.
I did one for a recess, with a shelf for gloves, scarves etc over the top. The shelf was supported by triangular supports at the ends and fixed by dowels at regular intervals. The screws fixing the vertical board to the wall were hidden by the triangular shelf supports so fixings are totally hidden. No wall is perfectly flat and the recess wasn't properly square so it took quite a lot of work with filler etc to ensure that there no gaps between the wall and the wood. It was finished using hardwax oil. That was a cheap piece of oak for £11!. Regardless any good piece of oak deserves better than Wickes hooks!
I did exactly the same. We still had a cheap Ikea one when we moved in. But the store bought ones are all very narrow. I reused the hooks on a longer board. We don't have many coats, but I hate digging for them. Just a coat of wax turned out to be plenty of protection, it still looks good after almost 10 years. It's a simple thing to do, but one you see every day.

I guess you could just put the 'invisible' fixings underneath the hooks..? No plugs.

Small tip: at 10:57 I see you drilling with a vacuum. If you stick an open envelope with some painters tape to the wall just below the marked spot, almost no dust will escape and you can fully focus on drilling
Another great video. One thing I always try and do with a project is make it reversible. That is, I can remove it is possible. What happens if you change your mind in the future?
After our extension build, our utility trebled in size, but we have nowhere for our coats, and the wife mentioned something like this - but I’m hellbent on doing a boot room bench with back for the coat hooks, but I’m yet to start, after 12 months!

I’ve made something very similar to this, to hang many keys on. Like you, I didn’t want the fixings to show, I used a keyhole cutter router bit on the back which worked perfectly and I think would’ve been the perfect answer to your mounting of the coat rack.
Great job Stuart. It’s nice to see someone using as much of a board as they can rather than lopping off bits from the middle and wasting the rest. Another idea for your plugs is to use a contrasting wood like teak, mahogany or sapele to make them a feature. I think I prefer your choice of hiding them though.

Made one with some locally produced cast iron antique style hooks.
However, due to weight issues of the hooks & oak (450×70×19mm) found I could only use 3 hooks without having to use larger sized fixings than I wanted. Could have used more fixings but that meant more holes in the wall.
Love it, I make these with and without a shelf from my own offcuts to sell at craft fairs/ markets etc and they go really well! Obviously, because they are sold for the customer to fit I can't do plugs as you did, so I choose my hooks so that they are big enough to hide the fixing screws. My own, in my house, is plugged!
Nice job Stuart, as you rightly stated this is the joy of DIY, making exactly what you need and not buying just what happens to be available, and that is so much nicer than anything you could buy !

I did this a couple of years ago with an old scaffolding board. Stained it reasonably dark so to hide the screws a bit I spray painted the heads with black spray paint so they didn't stand out. Couple with black hooks it looks really good. Also with the screws exposed, it means we can easily take it down.

Nice work Stuart. Some comments on here regarding hiding the fixing screws behind the hangers might be a good idea but, sometimes there might not be enough room, if the hangers are small for instance, also you are showing people how to hide fixing screws using dowels.
Nice job, thanks for sharing. Normally I'd counsel against gloves and machines. but I have found oak is in the habit of giving you tiny splinters, even when sanded you can still pick one up along an edge.
Good use of a nice piece of Oak (my totally subjective and irrationally favourite species of wood - sometimes "reasons" are overrated 😀). One question - how do you find "wood offcut" shops?

Thanks for another great video, Stuart! I was surprised to see you wearing gloves when using power tools because I was told that wearing gloves was dangerous because if they get caught on the tool they can pull your hand into the tool causing serious injuries. Was this bad advice?

I am the first person to go to lots of effort for details only I will know are there because they are covered up! So I fully understand why you would go to all that effort, but for our utility room I bought two premade racks and put them side by side.

I like the quality of the thing but the way you have mounted it on the wall is, in my view, a bad idea. You might what to remove that in the near future just to repaint the wall.
