"Tom Sawyer" is the first song from Rush's eighth studio album "Moving Pictures," recorded during October and November of 1980 at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec, Canada. It was released on February 12, 1981. As with their previous album Permanent Waves, they continued to write songs with a more radio-friendly format, featuring tighter song structures and songs of shorter length compared to their early albums.
Tom Sawyer was the crystallization of a new, modern Rush: a powerful, finely crafted hard rock song with a punchy yet deeply philosophical message. It came about during a summer rehearsal vacation that Rush spent at Ronnie Hawkins' farm outside Toronto. The song was written by Lee, Neil Peart, and Alex Lifeson in collaboration with lyricist Pye Dubois, a poet and lyricist of the band Max Webster. “Those guys were big friends of ours,” Lifeson recalls. “But Pye was a little mysterious - kind of a strange fellow! He was very quirky, a bit of a nut, but he did write great lyrics. And around 1980 Peart was presented with a poem by Dubois named "Louis the Lawyer" (often incorrectly cited as "Louis the Warrior") that he modified and expanded. Lee and Lifeson then helped set the poem to music. In the December 1985 Rush Backstage Club newsletter, drummer and lyricist Neil Peart said:
"Tom Sawyer was a collaboration between myself and Pye Dubois, an excellent lyricist who wrote the lyrics for Max Webster. His original lyrics were kind of a portrait of a modern day rebel, a free-spirited individualist striding through the world wide-eyed and purposeful. I added the themes of reconciling the boy and man in myself, and the difference between what people are and what others perceive them to be - namely me, I guess."
The poem was based on Mark Twain’s 1876 novel "The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer", which all three members of Rush had studied in school. Peart in particular identified with the book’s central themes of rebellion and independence. From 2112 through to Freewill on Permanent Waves, individuality was a recurring subject in Peart’s lyrics. What Dubois created in Louie The Lawyer was, in Peart’s words, “a portrait of a modern-day rebel”. Says Lifeson: “Neil took that idea and massaged it, took out some of Pye’s lines and added his thing to it.” Peart chose the simpler title of Tom Sawyer and completed the lyrics with an element of autobiography. As he put it, “Reconciling the boy and man in myself, and the difference between what people are and what others perceive them to be - namely me, I guess.”
In essence, Tom Sawyer is about a distinct individual who refuses to let “normal” influence his public persona. Because “his mind is not for rent”, what others think of him doesn’t matter - he expresses himself truly as himself. He doesn’t try to fit the mold by following trends that others have made popular but rather bases it off of what he was learned from watching the world and what he truly believes in his heart.
The "growling" synthesizer sound heard in the song came from Lee experimenting with his Oberheim OB-X. For "Tom Sawyer", Lee switched from his Rickenbacker 4001 to a Fender Jazz Bass he purchased from a pawn shop.
Alex Lifeson describes his guitar solo in "Tom Sawyer" in a 2007 interview: I winged it. Honest! I came in, did five takes, then went off and had a cigarette. I'm at my best for the first two takes; after that, I overthink everything and I lose the spark. Actually, the solo you hear is composed together from various takes.
“On Tom Sawyer, the synthesizer is such a key part of that song,” says Lifeson of the recording. “There was a good integration between the three of us and the keyboards. We still had that trio feel. Plus, we always felt that we had to replicate each song as faithfully as possible when we played it live, so Tom Sawyer was written in that way. There’s no rhythm guitar under the guitar solo or anything like that.”
It’s a song that proved pivotal to the band’s development. Geddy Lee has called it the “defining piece of music” from Rush in the early 80s. For much of that decade, keyboards took an increasingly important role in the band’s sound. More than three decades on, the power of this song, and its message, has not diminished. “There’s a freshness about that sound that still stands out,” Lifeson says proudly. “And there’s something in the lyric that people have always related to very strongly - the spirit of independence and adventure. It’s just one of those special songs.”
It is one of Rush's best known songs and a staple of both classic rock radio and Rush's live performances, having been played on almost every concert tour since its release. "Tom Sawyer" was one of five Rush songs inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame on March 28, 2010.

As you stated above: Neil completed the lyrics with an element of autobiography. As he put it, “Reconciling the boy and man in myself, and the difference between what people are and what others perceive them to be - namely me, I guess.” Neil was a disciple of no one. (self described) Through his lyrics we fans can piece together a personal philosophy in much of what he penned over his years with RUSH. I love this song and it's meaning! What a wonderful addition to all the RUSH shares your currently working on Dan! Kudos on all you've brought to You Tube over the last month babe! ~ღ!~:)

I do believe that when Neil wrote Tom Sawyer he had himself in mind. When you analyze all of the lyrics he wrote and compare it to the kind of man he was, I would say that he fit the title of "today's Tom Sawyer". I know that this is one of your favorite Rush tunes, babe. This song really played a large part of furthering the band commercially. It stands on its own as it is different from all of their other songs in some special way. What a way to open their biggest selling album "Moving Pictures"! Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement as I have journeyed along with these uploads. I hope that many people will enjoy the fruits of my efforts in the future. I love you, sweetheart! ~ Dan ❤️

BD, you are definitely a lover of bass! LOL! This is one of my favorite Rush tracks too. I used to play it in several bands back in the day, and it was always a pleasure. Everything about the song is cool.
I'm glad the closed captioning is helping you remember the words...it's helping me too! It's also setting me straight on songs that I thought I knew the words to but didn't LOL!
Thanks so much for the kind words, my friend. ROCK ON!

    A modern day warrior
    Mean, mean stride
    Today's Tom Sawyer
    Mean, mean pride
His mind is not for rent
Don't put him down as arrogant
    His reserve, a quiet defense
    Riding out the day's events
    The river
And what you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the mist, catch the myth
Catch the mystery, catch the drift
The world is, the world is
    Love and life are deep
Maybe as his skies are wide
    Today's Tom Sawyer
    He gets high on you
    And the space he invades
    He gets by on you
    [Moog Synth Solo]
    [Guitar Solo]
His mind is not for rent
    To any god or government
    Always hopeful, yet discontent
    He knows changes aren't permanent
    But change is
And what you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the witness, catch the wit
Catch the spirit, catch the spit
The world is, the world is
    Love and life are deep
Maybe as his eyes are wide
    Exit the warrior
    Today's Tom Sawyer
    He gets high on you
    And the energy you trade
Right on to the friction of the day
