- This is a personal project, made for the love of a band that has provided the soundtrack to my life. It is an unofficial, unendorsed effort and not intended for profit or monetization; the music and various video performances used are all obviously copyrighted but only fair use is intended.
If you enjoy the video and feel the need to express that monetarily, I suggest making a donation to the Peart Family Memorial Fund, which after his passing was created by Neil’s family to support cancer care at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre: www.rvhkeeplifewild.ca/ways-t...
Actually, I suggest making a donation even if you don’t like the video; a good cause shouldn’t suffer because of my lackluster editing skills.
This effort was inspired by and meant to follow in the footsteps of the classic Different Stages video released in 1999, but covers a far wider range through the band’s career and includes clips spanning from the original music video in 1977 through R40 in 2015. I am not a professional video editor, or even a particularly skilled amateur one, so please forgive the imperfect finished product.
The audio (and the “baseline” video) is from the “A Show of Hands” DVD release, which I believe is the 2nd best extended live version of all their performances of the song captured on video. The even-more-extended Different Stages performance is arguably the very best one, but I wanted to avoid re-using it so as to ensure I was creating something new. And by happy coincidence, “A Show of Hands” is from the very first tour I ever saw them on, Hold Your Fire (December 7, 1987 East Rutherford NJ - Joisey represent!) - so that particular version holds special meaning for me personally.
Wherever possible I used clips from official Rush videos and DVD/Blu-Ray releases, and those include:
1977 - Official Music Video
1981 - Exit Stage Left
1983 - Grace Under Pressure
1989 - A Show of Hands
1990 - Presto tour (from the Time Stand Still bonus features)
2003 - Rush in Rio
2010 - Time Machine
2015 - R40
In a few places, however, I leaned on other Rush fans for hard-to-find clips. In particular, @RollTheFemers had a 1994 performance from the Counterparts tour that fit perfectly in a few spots, so I hope they do not mind the re-use. (I didn’t see any contact information on their channel and so could not ask permission in advance, but of course if they object please contact me at the email address in my channel’s info).
I also need to thank @tourbuslive for their video of the July 15, 2015 show at Irvine Meadows, CA - that was the last show I saw (and the 2nd to last ever) and there’s a truly great moment with Alex and Neil that I thought fit wonderfully and gave me an excuse to include a clip from “my” last show. ( I did take some video myself, but tourbuslive had a way better seat than I did!)
Finally, a huge thanks to @kimroberts6838 for capturing the final performance on July 17, 2015 at the LA Forum, and most especially the moment when Neil finally came out to center stage and took a bow with Geddy and Alex. I felt there was no better way to end this video than with that amazing and heartbreaking moment, and as with tourbuslive, Kim, please contact me if you have any objection to the use of your clip in this video.
While I hope that this version is satisfying enough to bring some joy and memories to other Rush fans, I recognize my own limitations and if there’s anyone reading this with actual video editing skills who would be interested in evolving and improving this into a more polished version, by all means please drop me a line via my email in the channel info as I’d welcome a chance to collaborate on what has been simply a labor of love from a fan who is very, very grateful for 40 years of joy from the greatest band that ever played.
“Don’t be sad because it’s over, smile because it happened.”
I will never not miss Rush.
Very well said.
@@Maximill888 thanks, Dr. Seuss
@@Maximill888 Ê pena a sua falta de gosto
Só um néscio não gosta de Rush....pouco importa a sua opinião estou me burrifando
Deve sentir falta é de paneleiros tipo A-Ha
Lryics and musicians... gotta love boomers who have their shit together ❤ 😀
You could see just how happy Neil was at the end of that last show knowing he was going to spend a lot more time with his daughter and wife
“Power trio”. Far more, they LOVE music, there’s a difference!
I was maintaining and jamming well, until the camera eye panned onto Neil.
Started bawling like a baby.
There will never be another Neil Peart,
Ever.
You are right, No never..... Instead of being sad it is over, be so very glad that it happened and that you were there..... Cheers

Rush is a band made of three incredible musicians. They should have been inducted into the R n R HOF years ago.
3 legends.
RIP NP... this is awesome. It wasn't often that Neil would smile or laugh. Always so serious about his trade.... Until Alex gets up there and starts making googly faces at him and he ends up busting out laughing. I miss him. 2:38 is where the fun begins.
time stand still
Best band in the galaxy!
When I saw the last part of the video, where Neil ran up to take a bow, I realized it was from Rush's final performance. Got a bit choked up.
Yes was hooked after Caress of Steel. Caught them everytime they rolled in to town. Amazing band!
And one with lyrics . And of course drums. 😃😃 best 3 concerts ever in my life 😀 early 80's
The entier soundtrack of my youth was written by Rush.

Fantastic video, edited with passion for a passionate rock band, the one, the only, the brilliant and finest band to ever grace us with their pressure, Rush!!
RIP Neil Elwood "The Professor" Peart, drummer, lyricist, author, human. We miss you every day.
❤❤❤
We will never forget ❤RIP Professor
The only song that surpasses 'Stairway to Heaven': they let it all loose over the years when playing the Rush Theme Song - yes, the theme that defines Rush's molding of a new reality, closer to the heart, and they do that so well, better and better every time, as they each realize deeper and deeper the import of this message for the world. This video demonstrates that their showmanship surpasses all others - The Who, and everyone! That fun and joy is communicated to the whole world for all time! Thank you, guys - this is a real masterpiece, that may never be matched ever again. ❤🧡🤎
Great
What a band wow. RIP Neil❤❤
I miss those guys so much! They were always such a joy to see!
Awesome!! Love rush, every time I here there songs, brings back memories of my life long friend who also loved rush unfortunately died in2016, suicide. R.i.p Dale. And R.i.p. Neil, you both left too soon.
The greatest supercut ever seen in my life! Dude you nailed it! Rush's music is so `Closer to the heart`
Excellent cuts of all the appropriate haircuts through the band's history.
This has become my favorite video on the Internet
Well done, Rob. Very well done. I thought I had finished crying over Neil, but I guess not quite yet.
Simply magical. They will live forever
Perfect ending so apropos of musical inspiration that will never end.
I just wish *somebody* would notice the audio Easter Egg that I put at the very end...
The gefilter polka version? I heard it. I’m sure many others did too. 😂
yay! glad to hear it. I couldn't see ending the video with anything other than the clip from the final show, but wanted to include a little reminder of their humor and, well, goofiness in there too...
That syncing of the stick toss is brilliant!
Most EXCELLENT montage.❤❤❤❤❤❤ LOVE SEEING NEIL SMILE AND BANTOR ❤❤❤ MISS ALL OF YOU 👍✌🙏
Super super cool!
Thanks for sharing an example of friendship, humility and talent honesty they gave to all of us.
amazing montage .... much health evr1
Yes please ❤ so much more Rush fav band 4ever y'all had to be there ❤
One thing that's all but impossible for me to do is look back on any long-established band, RUSH for example, and pick which video of a particular song comes to mind as the best I've seen. (Yes indeed, all but impossible so I never even tried to think about it.) Although I did just watch this and I couldn't help saying to myself - "Self, that has to got have been the best video of Closer to the Heart that I've ever seen!"
Thanks, this was awesome. I still remember exactly where I was when I heard that Neil had passed. I feel so bad for Geddy and Alex. I'm still sad, so I can't imagine how they are feeling.
Well, he was the new guy, so...
Outstanding! Love the snippet of the Time Machine at the end
Wow. Nice editing to capture the life of Rush.
Still one of my all time Rush favorites... Nice work on the video showing the different decades! I could have cried at the end.
Lovely words
Fuckin right dude what an awesome video thanks for posting 🎸🥁🤘💯

One or “THE” Greatest band on earth. RIP NEIL
So great. All the different shows. Omg. I miss them so much.
What a nice tribute video for an awesome band. Really cool of the band to include the original drummer footage!
❤
Terrific band. In my top 3 of all time. Thanks for sharing. Excellent editing. So miss them live.
Uber kool, quite possibly a better mix than da Different Stages version...🤔
Luv da ending 2!🥰
Thanks! Especially as I think that version's awesome. (I am very unclear on who the heck actually created it, however, does anyone know? It doesn't seem to have been an official release but then again does seem like one... but it's not on Rush's official YT page...)
Lovely, really lovely!!!
Awesome xx
Excellent work, thank you!
Also, nice touch with Alex drawing the chart @ 2:29
Awesome always! 🤘
❤❤❤
Hermoso video con la ultima imagen de Neil feliz, definitivamente Show of the Hands fue la version definitiva de CTTH ❤

Excellent Rob . Well done and much appreciated..👍❤
I've just shared your video on many RUSH fan pages on social media. This is REALLY well done and was such a pleasure to watch. Many thanks for having taken the time to make it and for having shared it with us.
😂Neil will not be forgotten, moreso now that he had passed on my birthday 🎉 Jan. 7th 2000. Rest in peace, my comrade in percussion. I hope we can play together soon. Maybe this January. Ive had enough here.🙋💯
❤
That was some stunning work, both musically and editing. So happy that I got to enjoy them live over a couple of dozen times.
Effin love this!
This video was masterfully done- combining different live shows and editing it all together almost seamlessly!
Thank you for putting that wonderful video together. Three guys who loved their fans, having a blast on stage.
Great job dude!
Thanks!

This is awesome, great work
my entire body turned into a huge goosebump ... great work and thank you
Wow! This turned out great. Great Job!
Thank you!
Sensacional! Obrigado! Thank you!
Wow, this must have taken some time to get everything to synch up. Bravo.
reminds me of the Different Stages video for CTTH, updated to include post-90s footage lol
That was, in fact, the idea !😀
@@RobNeppell awesome, you nailed it
Reminds me of Peter Gabriel's Solsbury Hill - Live DNA video
Glad to hear! That's a wonderful video and, along with the Different Stages version of CttH, was absolutely an inspiration. (And btw, I saw PG on his tour this year and he was / still is awesome...)
@@RobNeppell i as well saw him live this year and as you said, he was awesome
Great video Rob. I hadn’t noticed how happy Neil looked playing this song at the final gig. Relief that he wouldn’t have to tour again?
Thank you!
As for Neil and R40, the actual clips of him playing are not from the final LA Forum show (only the end, from @kimroberts6838 's video). Most of the R40 segments are from the official live video, which I believe was filmed over the course of several of the Toronto shows in June 2015.
At 02:37, however, is where I used a clip from @tourbuslive of the July 30, 2015 show at Irvine Meadows, which was the second-to-last show (two days before the LA Forum) and where I saw them last. When I saw Neil singing along with Alex it was just too perfect and went right into the mix. As is probably obvious, I leaned heavily towards using clips where they were clearly having fun, and ultimately decided to both start the video and end it (... there's an audio "easter egg" if you listen close for it... 🙂) on a lighthearted note: I wanted to bring some smiles to fellow fans and celebrate what was and still is in all our hearts.
Wouldn't it be great if the guys up in DC would listen to lyrics of a Canadian band put out in 1975?????????
Hey! I'm in the video at 1:31 and you didn't get permission to use my likeness! Kidding! Nice job!
I heard this was the only time Neil came down and bowed with the other 2. Is this true?
Yes
Geddy just got better looking as he aged.
decent, but out of sync in parts which spoils it.
I know it was a well intended video but whoever edited this, sucks.
