    My hubby's granny worked in the school cafeteria for 40 yrs. She would save the used milk cartons and take them home to grampa. He filled the little cartons with dirt and seeds. They had a sunporch on the back of their house where he started all his plants most from seeds he had saved. He was a wonderful gardener and so many times we remark on how we should have been watching and asking questions while he was still with us.

    Charles Dowding has excellent videos on "pricking out" baby seedlings for propagation.
    Another tip for filling trays... Instead of having to push the dirt down in every individual cell. Simply fill, take another tray and put on top as if you were stacking them, give it a little push down, take it off and finish filling. That way they all get done at once. 💚🌱💚

    I just heard of a theme garden yesterday. I thought about trying one in one of my raised beds. It is where you plant everything that goes in to something together. Such as a pizza or spaghetti sauce garden and planting onion, bell pepper, cilantro, basil, garlic, and tomatoes together in one spot. I’m very proud of your seeds💚💚💚 I’m also starting seeds for the first time this year and you inspired me. Awesome job!👩‍🌾💚🍅☀️🥕

    Rachel, love your channel. I think you need to keep the top of the soil moist until you think they all germinated then water from the bottom. I use to work at a greenhouse and we would always water from the top until we started to get the second set of leaves. We would always cover the flats with plastic, depending on seed type if they need light to germinate, either clear, white, or black plastic, it greatly increases the germination rate. We would saturate the soil cover with the plastic and rarely had to water until the plastic was removed. I also think seed depth is very important for good germination. Hope it helps!

  • @lindayounce4494
    @lindayounce4494 3 роки тому +2

    Your sweet potato starts look fantastic. Don't give up yet on those seeds that have not germinated. Some types take much longer. All of my tomatoes(except one verity) sprouted. I was ready to start over. Then I got busy with something else and when I checked them a few days later, they had germinated. So give them some time.

    Basil makes a white thick gelatinous coating when they first swell up. It's like a white version of chia seeds. Totally normal in case you see one that gets washed to the top. Freaked me out the first time I saw it.
    I use a chopstick as a seed Dibble but pencils work too.

    So excited for you! We are experiencing the opposite. My brassicas are doing well. Still waiting and hoping for pepper sprouts. Keep us posted. I want to try starting sweet potatoes in soil vs water. I heard its faster and more effective...hmmm?!

    • @Emeraldwitch30
      @Emeraldwitch30 3 роки тому

      It is much easier and faster in soil. I potted my murasaki purple skinned sweet potato on the 17th in potting mix and have it sat on my fireplace hearth for warmth(no light needed until it sprouts) and its put down many roots and just showing signs of sprouting leaves/slips.
      I used to do it in water but they usually rot. I'd be lucky to get one or 2 slips.
      The best thing is actually keep them in the warmest area that you have(nothing over 100 °f tho lol ). Even if you try the water way. 🥰
      A different video actually exclaimed that sprouting sweet potatoes in water is really just best for teaching kids in a class room how roots grow.
      I made over 20 slips from one small potato last year. More than I needed for my pots and raised beds. I also shared some with my aunt .
      I'm tempted to head back to trader Joe's and grab one of the purple fleshed sweet potatoes they had. But I'm limited on how much more garden I can dig lol. I have the room but not the energy🤣🥰

    For the Kellogg’s breakfast tomatoes, you are going to probably want to check out Cali Kim. ua-cam.com/video/qvKzFd1fEqY/v-deo.html Those are some of her favorite tomatoes, but they grow so big that you have to stabilize them with special care in order to keep them on the vine long enough. She ties hers up with pantyhose, which I’m not really thrilled about considering those are usually made of some kind of synthetic material. But she has a lot of videos on that. Also, I remember you mentioning the kneady homesteader in previous videos. If you have not seen her latest video, I would seriously recommend watching it. She has had a tragic accident and getting others to donate to her go fund me and to watch her channel would be incredibly helpful. Thank you for all you do! 💙💙💙

      Peppers can take up to 3 weeks to sprout so don't be too hard on yourself.
      My nadapeno peppers took 7 days but my sweet bell mix still isn't up and its day 13 but they took a long time last year too.
      I'm sure me checking them every other hour for the last few weeks is making them shy lol🤭🤣🥰
