- In this episode I'm attempting starting summer crops from seed indoors rather than direct sowing. Almost everything I plant in this video, I have previous just "direct sowed" into the garden. By starting them indoors like this, I'm hoping I can get a little jump-start on the timeline.

I've always bought my tomato 🍅 plants. This year I decided to start from seeds. Well I planted 14 different varieties. Three seeds of each just in case one didn't germinate I would still have the opportunity to choose the strongest one. Well all of them germinated super fast and strong.
To top things off I found a package of San Marzano seeds from 2014 and decided to throw them in a tray to see if any popped up. To my surprise all of them did. So I ended up with 214 tomato plants. Still given some of them away.
I always soak my sweet peas seeds for about 24 hours prior to planting. Calendula are easy and quite cold hardy!
Wow! Sweet peas and morning glory are just the opposite where I live. Morning glory take over everything and come back year after year and sweet peas are an annual. Happy gardening everyone 🌸

Squash cooked up an zucchini chucked an tossed in chicken alfredo,Alfredo, with white cheese an parmesan an under the broiler is so yum.adds so much more to the dish.
I’ve grown calendula several years now with no problems.it’s grown everywhere I’ve planted it. I sprinkle chamomile on top of the soil and press down, then mist with water. It grows pretty well and reseeds so the next year I find it in the strangest places.I’m waiting until after this cold spell (SW Michigan) to start squash and cucumbers in the greenhouse. I’m trying Amaranth for the first time this year. Hoping if I start it in the greenhouse I will have better luck. I’ve heard it’s very picky. Good luck with the flowers! I’m sure they will grow fine for you.
Last year I got ahead with my trays and lights and bought super sturdy plastic Park Seed Bio Domes. What a game changer!!! The domes are three times higher and vented which allows for better growing and humidity control. They have dense styrofoam forms that a growing medium plug fits into. It makes for easy bottom watering. For people who want less mess in the house from loose potting mix and to cut the seeding process into a third the time its great!! Hardly any damping off of seedlings too. No more fiddling with flimsy trays and they are more compact. I also bought from True Leaf Market their LED grow lights. This is my first year using all of my new “toys” and the seedlings are super sturdy and stocky. I am loving the way the plants are all coming up. Especially the green peppers, tomatoes, broccoli and cauliflower and even celery. While it was an investment I am over the moon over the items I bought. In fact I am getting ready to order more seeding plugs for cool season plants. Thanks for sharing what you have learned!!
I have been seed starting marigolds for 6 years, but this is my 1st successful year. I used seeds from Hoss, love them. Great show.
It sounds like you're in a bird sanctuary, very nice sounds of spring. A neighbor gave me a "long pumpkin" as he called it, lol. It was sweet, delicious and thin skinned. Good for pies. You've made great progress on starts. Can hardly wait to see the garden in it's fullness.
My last frost date is Thursday, April 22. We got 3.5 inches of snow this morning that melted off by noon, but it is supposed to get down to 28 tonight. I'll direct sow cukes and squash in May, once the soil warms up a bit. I grow black oil sunflowers all around my chicken coop, self seeded from whatever the chickens and other birds miss, lol.

We have amaranth come up like weeds here in the PNW. We never planted any! So I thought it was so funny when I saw people selling the seeds! I know your winters are harsh there but maybe before you get snow you could try broadcasting the flower seeds where you want them like trying to mimic nature: the seeds naturally fall to the ground in the fall, then start popping up in the spring. Canadian Permaculture Orchard does this.
Also not sure if you have the book “Seed to Seed” but Danny from Deep South Homestead recommended it so I got it. There’s so much great information about seed saving and what will really cross pollinate with what.
My husband's fav cucumber is the 8 inch. I tried tomatoe cageswith mu cukes for the first time. What a bountiful harvest I had.
Rachel, you make me laugh. Make your markers first then start planting. 🤣 trellising my cucumbers for years and it keeps down on the powdery mildew. Your garden is going to be so abundant this year. 🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤️

Oh my goodness love the native pumpkin have to find some of them, looks good I love squash we can it and freeze it makes a good southern casserole...
i never use seed starting mix. I always use potting mix just make sure to break up any chunks, and take out any twigs. but it works.
I always soak my sweet pea seeds for a day or so, nicking them can also be helpful. mine are happy outside right now, planted them in pots outside a month ago.
Go less deep on squash seeds, and I'd only give them 2ish weeks, once they sprout, they go crazy, and don't really like transplanting. Excited to see the lost variety of pumpkin!

That squash looks fascinating! Love the idea of new native plants! I am trying amaranth for the first time this year. I may have to start it inside. Thanks for the heads' up on that! I purchased it after seeing it in a flower garden! Your garden will be beautiful!
You'll love patty pan easy to grow and very good!
Amaranth doesn't like to be wet, just damp. It loves the heat! I don't cover Amaranth seeds and keep just wet enough. I grow red garnet amaranth as a microgreen. But the green version I've grown in my garden and use like spinach. It is a heavy producer in our Florida heat, I end up blanching and freezing it to save to use in soups and other meals.
If only I could get zucchini to do well! I get vine borers every time. Happy gardening!
I didn’t not get those, but I have heard you can wrap the stems in aluminum foil to deter them.
I’m in zone 4 and we are supposed to get snow overnight and tomorrow and a hard frost! Crazy 😜! I covered up my herb garden and thankfully the only thing planted are the potatoes which are still underground and the onions. I think I will be waiting until May. I’m anxious to plant my sweet potato slips! I’ve gotten 19 slips from one potato and there are still 7 growing on the potato
You will only have issues with cross pollinating if you save seeds. The cross wont show up till the next generation.
Dear Rachel the Amaranth specifically "Love Lies Bleeding" you have there I have about 10 lovely healthy plants here inside on the window sill. Just sprinkle on the top of the soil do not cover they need light to germinate, keep moist and they will germinate for sure
Happy flower planting! I saved the seed and have grown these for a few years and they grow about 5' tall and long lovely ropes of red blooms!

Totally get the NOT trellis cucumber growing, or gherkin as we call them in UK. I tried for the first time last year. Having grown them for past 20 years on the ground, I was very disappointed. I am definitely going back to ground trailing again. Keep going with the flowers, great for attracting bees to pollinate your vegetables.
I've never had germination of my calendula seeds. This year I bought the. For MI Gardener. Planted 3 seeds and two have germinated so far. I did use the stratification method though. Let's see how it goes until I'm ready to transplant them. Still working on prepping my new beds.
Calendula grows really well from seed. Slow to germinate but hardy during the whole process.

1st yr seed starter here. Heard grn peppers were hard to get to germinate. Ha! Now that I have 75 plants and only need 6!
They’re not hard, they just take a while.
Definitely interested in the Native American seeds. My garden is mostly heirloom Native American plants. Looking forward to hearing more about them. Wish you were closer would give you all the amaranth seedlings you wanted. 🍀
Omg! I never thought to use zucchini in my tomato sauce! I wasnt going to grow any this year because I really only like it for zucchini bread. Thanks for the idea! Girl we need to meet up at Blocks this year! Lol

I grew calendula from seed this year...they took a bit longer than some of the other seeds to germinate, and I really don't know how many really germinated because the seeds are so strange looking I'm not sure how many I actually planted! Yes...you are right! The seeds look like little dehydrated snails! 🤩

I have 2 amaranth that came up. They seem to be very fussy. Squash and cukes and melons will germinate in just about any soil. I did mine in real woody chipped soil, and they all came up fine. I'm trying the mock pineapple recipe you did last year, genius.
I have always had great luck with calendula. It’s a quick germination and they do well potted or direct sown and can even take a good amount of frost in my experience. Sweet peas don’t love their roots messed with so I’d recommend putting them out pretty quickly and not allowing them to stay potted very long. Plus they can take some frost so that works out nicely. Lots of people grow them in special deep-root type seed modules.
Roots and Refuge Jess mostly starts in potting mix with amazing results.
Seminole pumpkins also have an interesting history/story behind them. I bought some seeds but didn't plant them last year and not sure about this year because I just have a small area and supposedly they take a lot of space. Still working on a way to plant them and try.

This is my first year growing calendula. I had great germination (Baker Creek seeds) and they popped up quickly. I've noticed they seem to grow super slow in the beginning, but are finally starting to take off. I've also had great luck with nasturtium, morning glories, petunias, vinca, and forget me nots. This is the first year I've really had any success with flowers from seed. They seem to take a great deal more patience and care than veggies!
I tend to soak my peas for a bit before planting .. some call for over night others a few hours .. I find it helps with germination ..
Will be interested to see how your cucumbers transplant- I've always heard it's best to wait and direct sow since the roots on those guys are so sensitive.

I would say, plant calendula where you want lots of it! I planted it in my front flower bed and I can’t get rid of it!
You should try 'Muncher' cucumbers for Todd...they are super delicious fresh eating!!! 🥒🥒🥒
I plant to cuks together and it's perfect and full ! I start early on everything so I harvest a month in advance and I get a bit longer of preserving . Gary is a fantastic teacher ! Love that you put zucchini in all the sauce and definitely going to do this year .

I too loved to watch Gary Pilarchik on The Rusted Garden his channel had full of ideas about raised bed gardening although i garden in ground outdoors and we have different zones his is 7 and i’m in 5b west Mi. Anyway Rachel, Mi gardener are also my favorite. Last year i decided to plant wild prairie flowers and i had success Calendula are one of those seeds mix on it i save some seeds and sow them along with some veggies plants no problem they are all came up now they are ready to be planted outdoors. This year i will try to used hay instead of wood chips mulching and will try to used Ruth Stout ideas for potatoes. Happy gardening fellow gardeners! Just sharing!
This soil is fine for the big seeds, tiny seeds like lettuce and carrots need a nice light soil mix
We call it indian pumpkin, and it taste so good and is so big.
I told my nephew the calendula seeds were baby dragon claws. Lol.😀
The morning glories do not come back here in WI either, but they put on a beautiful show each year. I grow Sunflowers all over my yard. Last year I had over a 100 in July & August. I love the Teddy for beauty, but I saved seeds for the Giants.

I started zinnias and several sun flowers indoors this year. They popped up within 4 days of being in the cups. Hopefully they transplant to outside good for me.

You may know this, but if you get tape that’s used for scrap books, you can seal your seed packets back and it peels off and back on easily.
Washi tape.
Also, great for Pumpkin pie is Cushaw squash, if nobody has mentioned that yet.
If you're wanting to ensure your Squash & stuff don't cross pollinate so you can save seeds, they have these things called "Blossom bags" on Amazon, for fairly cheap! They're similar to those little favor bags that have th drawstring at the top... I used to use panyhose to prevent crossing but these are supposed to be a lot easier to tie around the flowers! I have always stayed Amaranth inside & have had limited success- they need lift to germinate and so you're not supposed to cover them- but mine germinate, & then the roots seem to have trouble sending themselves down and they end up falling over!?! Lol into Kihung, 4 ft. 40 w led lights. I got 8 pg them for under $100! & they have kept my seedlings looming beautiful!
I write the labels when sorting out the seed packets that way less likely to end up with unknown varieties.
This is what I am doing tomorrow So far behind because of health issues. Hopefully we have a late first frost!
You can use the yellow squash like you do the zucchini.

I'm in Maryland. 28 years ago, my daughter grew a morning glory in a cup for a Mother's Day gift for me. That sucker took over! It took years to get rid ofit.

Hi! Love your videos. I started amaranth for the first time ever. Mine had about a 60% success rate using potting mix. I have no clue if seed starting mix might have yielded better germination. Anywho, the amaranth is thriving now that it's been transplanted ... fingers 🤞crossed.

Also, my grandma has had some type of morning glories growing up the side of her house for several years now, it comes back every year even with her ripping the dead vines down and out every spring lol! We are zone 4b/5a
Sweet peas I only ever get 1/2 to germinate.
I live in bay city, mi and last year my yellow squash produced amazingly more than my zucchini did...it was weird
Same experience in Illinois. Stink bugs and vine borers attacked, then hit with powdery mildew. I'm going to sow Zucchini indoors in the next week, to get jump start and then direct sow more in June. A tip I'll be using is to wrap the stem with aluminium foil as soon as it is substantial in size. Another thing I'm going to do is planting in various areas, so I don't lose all plants and maybe only lose one. Blessings for a bountiful growing season.
A lot of flower seeds need cold stratification, which they do by themselves over winter. I threw amaranth and hollyhocks in an area and got nothing the first season, now they come up like weeds!

If you have any tips on starting chamomile seeds, please share lol, I seeded some last year and it took forever to germinate (I have lights and heat pads) but only a couple tiny made it to the herb garden. I see they're coming back up outside but only a couple plants again.
It's so easy to get distracted while you're planting and vloging. Maybe you could have some sticks pre labled and ready to stick in the pots as you're multi-tasking?

I'm still waiting for my grain amaranth i planted in September i don't think it got enough light but the flowers are always covered in ants so hopefully thats a good sign
Sunflowers don't like their roots disturbed so be careful when transplanting. Just pinch off the one that you don't like.

people get morning glories mixed up with bind weed. not the same thing.
I once thought it was my morning glories and moonflowers that caused that scourge in my garden, so didn't plant them for years after!! Really love the moonflowers.
The weather at night hasn't been real cooperative for your seeds to germinate. It's been dropping to the mid-'30s at night.

Native Seeds SEARCH is a southern Arizona nonprofit seed conservation management program with the purpose of conserving and replenishing heirloom seeds. I love learning more about heirlooms and threatened varieties. I too mostly plant my "usual rotation," but I always add a few new things to try, usually something which just gets me jazzed to garden. I feel like that pumpkin variety you were sent would do the same for me. This year, I'm excited and ready to grow the Midnight Roma and a fun little Purple Jalapeno. Sometimes those quirky little varieties carry you through the season. Last year, a conservation mix of sunflowers kept me jazzed over the long summer days, despite the pest pressures and all the challenges.
Potting soil will work fine and I never get the "seed starting mix". It's literally a waste of money. I've even started plants in garden soil when I didn't have anything else with success. I picked up fresh garden soil this year and I was very surprised with the quality of garden soil changes this year and the compost. I've had bad experiences with store bought compost in the past. That is, being too chunky, not well decomposed, etc. This year, the compost looked like regular potting soil.
The calendula seeds always make me think twice about touching them because they looked like dehydrated maggots to me.

The most common we see this time of the year: house sparrows, downy woodpeckers, starlings, red-wing blackbirds.
Every single one came up, I can't get rid of plants, I only need 18 of each.
I wish I could grow a garden, I have plants of property, but I am not physically able. I would love to grow patty pan squash. My grandmother came up with a recipe for squash cake, that is the best cake I have ever eaten. Patty pan squash is hard to find around here, but when I find it, I buy all of it. In the past, I would peel it and cook it, and cool it down then freeze it. This year I want to try and find as much as I can and can it to put on my shelves.
