I'm not sure if you know but all the seeds that are floating on the top of the water won't grow they are duds. The ones that will always sink to the bottom. Doesnt matter what type of plant. Simple way to tell what will grow. Putting them onto a paper towel might help you to grab them also.
    -much love to you both😊

I grow everything from seed. A few tips, don’t be afraid to lower the lights to an inch above the peppers and tomatoes, they will love the heat and won’t become leggy. Also, sprinkle the top of grow mix/seedlings with cinnamon. It will prevent fungus problems. Good luck! You are doing awesome!

I think it's a wonderful seedling indoor greenhouse setup. Remember, if Edison hadn't found the 1000 ways that didn't make the light bulb work, he would never have found the 1 way that did. Nicely done.

The Rusted Garden advocates using boiling water in seed starting mix, mostly because of fungus gnats, I think. So I've been doing that for years and it always seems to work well - never had a gnat problem! I've used Ferry Morris lettuce and herb seeds and they've been great.

It's so strange and a little comical to see you vulnerable to anything Rachel, but I appreciate your genuine candor and trepidation that all of us feel when starting seeds. This year will be my first garden in years and I'm starting seeds, so I'm full bore after having watched literally 100s of videos on the subject. I'm preparing for my failures to come too and laughing right along with you. Thank you so much for your channel and how real you keep things! My favorite part is what you say after, "So what did I learn from that?" Most helpful gold nuggets! 😉

Oh, and I also heard that good old ground cinnamon, straight from the spice rack, can be sprinkled on the soil surface to ward off mold and fungus. Haven't tried it yet, myself, but planning to this year, if I need. A nice gentle fan really helps too, and makes for sturdier starts! 🌱

Love your "can do" attitude. The first year I used the mini greenhouse, I was so proud if my starts! Transplanted all into larger pots and when it was time to harden them off I simply moved the whole set up outside. Within an hour a gust of wind blew it over and knocked every plant out....along with their markers. So, I salvaged what I could, repotted them and had a "mystery garden". It was kinda fun seeing what developed!!

Woot! Hi neighbor. We are in the Belleville area. This is the first year that I am going to use a heat mat. I have always germinated peppers and tomatoes on top of my fridge, then moved them under the grow lights. Your hotter peppers will generally germinate last. You've got this! You are going to love seed starting. I am starting many flowers from seed for the first time this year.

You did great. I made my own heat mat. My onions germinated in 3 days. I know the peppers will take longer. Once the seedlings germinate you will want the lights no more than 2" from the stop of the plants. This prevents them from getting "leggy" That is why I use chain to hang my 4 ft. shop light....makes it easier to adjust the height as the plants grow.

I have 2 $10 heat mats from Amazon and 4 $16 3 foot led shop lights from Lowes. Nothing needs to be high end.
Put your pepper tray towards the bottom of your shelves close to your heat. The soil will warm up. Just don't let it get over 90 you actually might want to rotate your trays to control the temp.
A thin top layer of vermiculite will take care of mold issues.

I had a poor time of starting seeds for years! And then I saw Justin and Rebekah Rhodes do a video on how they start their seedlings using Fox Farm's Coco-Loco potting mix. This changed everything, nearly all of my seeds started it was so encouraging, I was using the wrong type of medium. Never use the "seed starting mix" is the first step. I've used the cheap and expensive seed starting mix and that didn't work. I tried just peat or coco core and that didn't work. But whatever they put in the Coco-Loco works and it's amazing. If you can find it at your local garden specialty store you won't need to pour boiling water on it and it doesn't have a negative smell. You can't find it at the big box stores, go online and find where they sell it locally in your city cause it's too expensive to buy online. Good luck, wishing you better luck!

The hardest part about starting something you don't know how to, or have never done, is accepting that you don't know how to do it and getting started is the first step to knowing how to do it. You overthink everything, worry too much about what others will judge you on, and because you don't want to get it wrong, thinking you'll only have one shot to get it right. So you get what we call "analysis paralysis" and you don't move. The ONLY mistake you can do in anything you need to do is not trying to do it. You are doing a great job!

I have a similar set up same sized green house and lights( 2 ) each shelf and I put mine in my room with my pellet stove kept damp with a spray bottle and almost everything germinated!!! This is my second year with peppers last year I tried twice no results this year 100% success and the lights have made an absolute drastic positive difference!!! This is my first year dedicated starting my own seedlings I have now opened the front and started using a fan as they need air and to help strengthen the plants so we're on a similar journey as this was my first year after failing last year the amazing thing I enjoy about gardening is it's a challenge and your never done learning also I kept a notebook and wrote down what I planted how many and when kept track of the temp inside the greenhouse during germination and when they started to sprout so I can look back and tweek or improve anything or keep what works next year!!

I am by no means an expert, I just have a windowsill to work with, but I do like to fill the cells up nice and full with potting mix. I find that if the are stretching out of the cells to get to the light, the reaching up and out makes mine a little leggy. If they are germinating right on the top they reach maximum light fast. I second everyone here that calls them "plant babies" that's truly how I feel. It's such a joy for me to seed start.

I know some people like to use boiling water, some like to bake the medium. Some say to use cinnamon on the surface, others say to use sand. I don't bother to bake the medium. I've tried the cinnamon trick, and it was a bust. I watched Gary over at The Rusted Garden Homestead talk about diluted hydrogen peroxide and BOOM. Worked like a charm on the starting mix I bought from the store. I have not had any issues with homemade mix, but I will be using that diluted peroxide if I do encounter any issues. I am the same way in that I don't like to be vulnerable when it comes to thing I have not done before. Thank you again for stepping out and sharing your experience lol The trick to peppers is higher temperatures for germination. They really like a "tropical" warm heat. Normally, I keep peppers separate from other starts because they like warmer temperatures to germinate than things like brassicas and even tomatoes.

Several years ago I had a potted plant that got fungus gnats, so I read up on it and the article said to sprinkle perlite on top of the soil. The reasoning for this is that fungus gnats like real moist soil to lay their eggs in I did not have perlite so I sprinkled dry sand instead and it worked but I put on a thick layer of sand and it got hard as a rock LOL

I’m in Texas and this year is my first year as well. I’m still very new to the gardening scene! I have a tiny space in my garage where I started, I have a grow mat, and one light. I started my peppers in early January and the rest early February. I have started cucumbers, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, sunflowers, marigolds, watermelon, and cantaloupe. My seedlings are doing relatively well considering we are having crazy weather right now! Keeping the light 1”-2” above the new growth is essential for making your seedlings thick and stronger. If I notice some are getting a bit leggy, I will rotate them to get more light. Love watching your channel!!♥️ Good luck!

You can also bake your soil or seed starting mix to sanitize it. I can't remember the specifics, but we did it all the time when I was in my high school horticulture class. Worked a treat. Smelled. But worked. Lol

They are all pretty easy to start from seeds, its amazing to watch a tiny cabbage seedling turn into this giant plant. I only started growing last year, i usually do just direct sow, just because I'm lazy although I will be starting onion seeds soon.

So I already learn a few things watching you do it and may try again on a few veggies this year👍 living in Arizona tho, I feel Direct sowing is fine👌

I use egg cartons for my peas. If i dirct sow them the voles eat every one. If I sprout them in egg cartons (3 to 4 per hole/section) and plant out at first sign of breaking the soil, the voles leave them alone.
I might talk hubby into buying me 10 foot of rain gutter to try sprouting peas like the English allotment gardeners

When I start my tomato seeds I soak them with kelp and last year added chitosan for the first time. I couldn’t believe the size of my tomato stalks and the yield of fruit. Chitosan is fairly new to consumers I think but there is a great set of videos on UA-cam by Bio Minerals Technologies that explains how it works. Fascinating stuff! I also use it in my compost tea as a foliar spray.

I have BAD luck with broccoli coming up. I learned today that the soil has to be 75-80° for it to germ and my house is 72....well, that explained that! Now, cauliflower and cabbage....👍🏼100% every time! I double seeded my cauliflower and ended up with 32 plants out of 36!! I had to report them and split them up because of the artic blast, otherwise we would have put these outside this weekend 🙄 oh well. Once these go out, then I'll start peppers and eggplants, then next month will be maters 😁

What an amazing set up! I am sure you will have success from seed to harvest! Thank you for taking us on your journey. I am still setting up my little area, hoping to plant my seeds sometime next week. My Husband had solo type disposable cups that had a logo...but the company changed their logo, so I plan to use those cups and just plant straight to the garden from them.

Another grilled cabbage recipe... my great grandparents always made this for us with cabbage out of their garden... quarter (or into eighths if its really large) cabbage, place each on its own piece of buttered tin foil, add salt and butter and sliced onions, and another bit of butter on top, wrap and grill until desired doneness (i say that because some people like some bite and some people like real soft cabbage)

you can take a non sharpened pencil an put a hole with it straight down in the middle of your grow pots an then take a tweezer to get the seeds out of the water bowl an put them in hole made by your pencil then cover over with the dirt.

I always plant too many seeds just in case they don't germinate well. Last year I had so many extra seedlings and no where to plant them! Not fond of Facebook but joined a group of local gardeners. With the shutdowns everywhere, we traded seedlings amongst ourselves: move the seedlings from trays to plastic or styrofoam cups, label, and leave in a box on the porch when someone is on their way. No contact, wave through the front door, and done. No fees involved. I hate throwing seedlings away and found out a lot of people feel the same way. Just think: you might help someone who couldn't grow from seed or found the local nurseries were out of stock :-)

If you get any white fuzzy “mold” on top sprinkle a heavy layer of cinnamon on top of the soil. Just take your hand and brush the seedling to the side and sprinkle the cinnamon over the soil. I don’t have a fan to circulate air by my seedlings but I have never gone wrong with a layer of cinnamon on top of the soil. No pests, no mold, always had success
I do the boiling water too!

Hey, Rachel!! I did watch your video yesterday with you setting up your green house. I've been doing just like you...... getting up the nerve to buy a little green house & grow lights, which I haven't done yet. I did actually buy my seeds early. Yay me!! I normally wait until around late March- May to get my seeds. By then I realize that I should have bought them & planted them last month or so. Then I'm desperate but I go ahead & cheat & plant them then saying "Well, it was close." Hahaha 😁 I live in the south, Alabama to be exact, so we have longer to grow things. I also watch "Homestead Heart" videos because she's in Georgia & she's starting things when I should be for my neck of the woods, pretty much. Anyway, keep trying things so I can be brave & try them along with you. Lol 😜

I have also seen folks on you tube using cinnamon to keep down mold and stuff. I've not tried it but they just sprinkle it on them once they're all planted. Good luck! I think it's going to go great. Hopefully your house is warm enough and with it being over the vent hopefully that will help. ALSO on Ebay I have found 20x20 heat mats and you can put two cell flats on it. I bought two of them about a month ago and have 4 trays on the two mats.

I use masking tape at the ends of the rows. Write the seed type on the tape and then place it on the tray's side. If you use popcycle sticks they get knocked out the cells or bump up against the lights.
