  • Planning a Vegetable Garden to give you the highest yields from your growing season. Our Garden space is 40ftX40ft. This is enough space to grow the staples we need to build our pantry out for the year. We grow primarily in Raised Beds and No Dig garden beds using high intensity planting guides to give us the greatest return on our growing space. Growing in a small space has many rewards, such as a limited footprint to manage weed pressure and watering needs. I hope you are encouraged that you do not need lots of land to produce a lot of food. This size is totally feasible for the standard suburban backyard.

I recommend you grow shelling beans. It’s so much food with little effort. After some trials, I only grow the Haricot Tarbois bean. It produces like crazy! It’s a meaty bean that cans up beautifully! It’s meant for casseroles but it’s excellent in soups. I love it as a chicken substitute in pot pie. It’s so yummy! I just plant a couple at the bases of each tomato cage and they share the space beautifully. It really is the perfect homesteading shelling bean because of how much it produces. Hope you give it a try!

I have started some of my seeds to transplant. I bought strawberry seeds to do in my garden tower, too. It's my second year having a 'garden' since I have to garden in containers, but I have been buying some grow bags and we hope to buy a house in the spring, so I can move my garden with us in the containers and bags.

I used about 4ft garden fence and short T-post (from Home Depot).for my cucumbers to grow up on, so much easier to pick. I also planted Nasturtiums with them. Great companion plants. The leaves and flowers are edible. Beautiful in a salad.
I also companion plant Brazil with my tomatoes. Throw flower seeds throughout the garden. Great pollinators, the bees and butterflies love it. Rotate all of your plants every year in the garden. Don't use the same rows/raised beds year after year for your plants. Each plant adds and takes away certain nutrients from the soil.
    Love your Garden Plan👍👌

Brassicas, lettuces, spinach, carrots, potatoes and so much more would grow. Unless your temps remain very low. Then I'd suggest a cold frame or DIY trellis tunnel. Never say never... Many herbs and lettuces prefer the shade. You will never know until you try. God bless you!

I did try and overwinter a few of mine- 2 are still alive out of 4 so we'll see! I also have winter sown some seeds in jugs to give it a try this year , mostly herbs and flowers with some kale and misc mixed in.

Rachel, I have three Green Stalks with day-neutral strawberries that produce late spring through early fall. I used a small bed for perennial herbs and plant herbs like dill, cilantro, and basil throughout the garden. What will you grow when it is too hot for spinach? Maybe you could plant your collards there and succession sow lettuce that thrives in the heat. You also could sow your collards in a seed tray and then transplant them when the spinach is finished as not to waste growing time. Thanks for sharing your plan. It really helps her what others are doing. Take care, 💕😊Francine

Building a hugel mound is a good idea; you will have is for a long time, however.
May I suggest the salad greens on the north side of the beans for some cooling shade, and your peppers on the warmer, sunnier south side of the beans. Just a thought.
Ah, now I seeyou have peppers on both sides. 😉

I need to plan out my garden still. I’m playing with Ruth Stout, back to Eden, Charles Dowding, and lasagna bed gardening - a hodge podge of good fertility in the garden. I used to only do wood chips/back to Eden, which I absolutely LOVE, but have been doing more and more experiments to see what gives back the most. Really, you can’t go wrong layering on organic material in the garden. It only creates more fertility. I prefer to compost in place versus creating mounds, so I just layer up the beds in the winter. I collect manure for compost heaps, and also harvest chicken pen compost in the spring since most everything from the yard and kitchen gets thrown there for the hens to go through. Wish I had some goats for extra manure!
You can’t go wrong using organic materials in the garden. I’d like to see you try a lasagna bed and a hugelcukture bed! I do lasagna gardening in some beds. The fertility left behind is AMAZING! I like to layer chicken manure, plant leaves from the garden, tree leaves, hay, and finally wood chips. Sometimes I even scrape the walkways and add to the layers, and the refill the walkways with new wood chips.
Check out Dan on his UA-cam channel Plant Abundance. He does hugelculture and permaculture gardening, using woodchips as his mulch. Cool guy. Hope you get a chance to binge his channel.

Oh, you would love honey nut squash then. Naturally sweeter, but smaller than butternut squash. They do not store as long either. I'm still storing both butternut and honey nut varieties. The honey nut have just started showing signs of time to use soon wrinkles. I cooked up 4 of them, brushed lightly with oil and pinch of salt- amazing flavor as is. I want to try ground sausage and apple chunks baked in them next. I believe honey nut squash is a hybrid that you can only plant seeds harvested once, true to original plant. I'm going to run a test of 2nd year harvested seeds this year to see if they are true to the honey nut variety or lean towards butternut.

Love this! So motivational. One quick tip: Planting peppers and green beans together is a bad idea. We planted those together and neither produced a single fruit/beans until we pulled the beans. Then our peppers went crazy but it took a few weeks before they started production. There's something about the root structures that shuts both down.

I agree about the high intensity gardening. Two years ago I put the weed fabric on my beds and burned the holes in. It worked as far as weeds go, but it also seemed to really limit the amount of food I can grow in a bed. It’s a dilemma because I tend to neglect weeding mid summer.
This year I bought what seems like a million flower seeds. I’m really excited to grow them for bouquets in the house and to give away to people. I’ve never really grown flowers for cutting, so this will be a whole new experience. I’m also going to try growing tomatoes in my greenhouse again. The only other year I’ve done it, I planted them too late and it got too hot for the blossoms to set.
I’m excited for your garden this year as well. I hope you don’t get the crazy flooding you’ve had the last two years. I wonder if you could do any swales or drainage systems that would help?

    • @ArmindaHeart
      @ArmindaHeart 3 роки тому

Instead of weed barrier, try using mulch as your weed barrier and stop tilling/digging the ground. If you have perennial weeds that would grow through mulch, first layer cardboard to smother them and then the mulch. The cardboard will compost in place. You can even top the cardboard with 6” or so of compost and plant immediately. You don’t have to add mulch until your seedlings are big enough to be mulched around. Hope this helps.

Can you tell us exactly what product you bought from Growers Solution for the brassicas? I used a floating row cover last year and the results were perfect....BUT....I really really did not like not being able to easily uncover them to look at where they are in the growing season.....I don't know if I want to repeat that again....so I would love to see your plan on what you bought.

I really enjoyed seeing you map everything out. I am very visual and in it will look AMAZING !!!! Thanks for sharing this good information on spacing and where the sun will be at to plant better in one area and even adding the sunflowers and erase between the zucchini plants. LOVE LOVE LOVE..... Someday hopefully we could do something like this but we currently live iin the city so my husband made boxes along our deck where we grow erbs and flowers to keep the mosquitoes away.
This year we plan to use the potatoes bags so we can set them in a nice area and planning to get some devices to hang our tomatoes and strawberries. Have had bad luck in ground with tomatoes,, the ants get in there and raise total having with thm and we have to wind up buying tomatoes at market.. We also have raised boxes along our deck where we grow peppers and onions. Everything else will go in ground though.

@@1870s potatoes and tomatoes. Any advice for tomatoes would be greatly appreciated. I am in Michigan and our towns built on bad land so we pretty much have to haul in dirt and fertilize and wait to see if the city land dirt is gonna effect the garden.
You were talking about a way to do potatoes I did not understand. I saw a video today that was about using potatoe pots. But I'm only 3rd year grower for potatoes and have only done the raised bed way but did not have good yield. Only bout 50 ish potatoes from 10 plants so I am def willing to learn more about tomatoes and potatoes.

I also acquired a couple of greenstalks and plan to devote one just for strawberries! Questions: what kind of fencing do you have around your garden? 640 Carrots?! 🥕 do you succession sow for large crops like that?

I love planning the garden. I think we are tripling our space this spring, so I am very excited. I have been waiting for you because we are in similar zones. I believe I heard you say that you were in zone 6? Looking at the farmers almanac it says that I am also in zone 6. When I Google it, I am in zone 5A. I am in northern Indiana. Any ideas? I'm confused.

It can depend on your microclimate. Elevation plays into it too. I'm northern Illinois, 5b. I was not able to plant out warmer weather crops until almost June last year. I hope we have a warmer, not SO wet of a spring. Hope this information helps you. Blessings to you!

A shop light with an inexpensive 6500k bulb light overtop the table will start most every seed. Some seedlings need a heat mat too.
I've found you must have heirloom seeds to continue to save seeds from year to year. My 2nd year Roma tomatoes did not produce Roma's, learning experience. They did produce, just not true to a Roma variety, more of a large plum tomato.
Starting from seed is so rewarding, but is a learning experience too. Never stop trying new things is my best unasked for advice. 😁 blessings to you all!

I was wondering if the seeding square takes in consideration the from center spacing. I think it was MI Gardner who talked about this and it sounds as if you get several more plants per space than what is normally suggested? Also I was not able to catch the kind of method you use for your potatoes if you could share that. I didn't have much success with my potatoes last year though it was my first year trying and didn't know what I was doing (still don't ;) Love your red glass BTW- I have been wanting to get brave enough to get me a pair for years....
