- Ok here we go decision time, which tomatoes and pepper seedlings do we pick to up pot for continued growing indoors? Decisions, decisions. I wish I had more room to give them all a fighting chance, but we have to only pick a few. Come along and find out which tips from other growers I am using to give myself the best chance at doing this right the first go around. A good rule of thumb for potting up is to wait until they have 3 sets of true leaves. The bigger the easier to pot up and the less damage you risk. You can also wait to feed them for a few days for sure. I actually don’t add any extra fertilizer at all beyond what’s already in the soil mix. Looking so good!❤️
I think you are doing great, I've been starting from seed for well over 10yrs and I let mine get WAY bigger before I transplant. Also when you save seeds you have many extra to play with and I add 6-8 per little container and when I separate the strong ones I give them away. BTW- I have learned a ton from your video's!
I’m in love with the little dog waddling in and out ❤️. I’m glad you mentioned that everyone does things their own way. You can be a successful gardener without copying every move another “professional” gardener makes. You’re doing great!
For what it’s worth - no need to up pot them yet at that size. Wait until they have a few sets of true leaves, they’ll be hardier and handle the transplant better!
Don't feed just yet, there's enough nutrients in the compost to see to their needs while they settle and recover, feeding at this stage just results in overgrowth and leggyness. Hold off until you do your final pot up before planting out then begin your feeding for growth for however long you do it before switching to feeding for blossom & fruit (if you switch that is, a lot of people these days just go straight to tomato feed & focus purely on fruit, I'm old lol I like a strong established base on which to produce fruit).
I would wait at least a couple of days before disposing of the unused plants - just in case something doesn't make it in the transplants.
This will be easier and more streamlined every single year. You learn so much that applies toward your future seasons! I’m glad you’re sharing as a new seed-starter, I know from a few years back it could be overwhelming for beginners when it seems like every gardener on UA-cam is already a pro at it.
Save the rest for a couple of weeks until you know if the potted up ones took.
A plastic fork works really well to get seedlings out of small cells.
I pop out the whole dirt block from the cell and then tease the baby plants appart on the table.
Don't dispose the unused plants, just keepthem in a space where they receive sunlight and keep them watered. In a couple of weeks they will surprise you with their growth.

Good for you picking the strongest! This is my third year starting from seed and I can NEVER part with any of my starts. It’s a real problem finding room for all the extras! 😂

You are way more disciplined than I was. I repotted my peppers a couple weeks ago and I couldn’t bare to pitch any of them. I’m now the mom to 110 pepper plants! 😆 I would have had 111 but the cat plucked one out and I found it all shriveled up on the floor. ☹️ Tomatoes will be next. I’m going to need a bigger house! 😂

I really enjoy the videos that you and your husband produce. You are both so down to earth and I love the honesty and sincerity that you guys offer. I am always amused at how many people want to give advice on THEIR way of growing and how things can always be better if you do it their way. I also grow tomatoes and peppers and am comfortable with how I do it, but I am in NO POSITION to tell you what you should do! I love seeing someone like you do it differently. That's how a person learns. Please keep up the great things you do!
Wow....great job!! U really do baby them! I am sure u will have great success. I do my own starts too....I always have more than enough and I don't do any of that. Not saying my way is right at all....I just tough love it because it's just how I am. I really enjoyed seeing how u did all that.
Oh and I am horrible at tossing out even one little start...I just can't bring myself to do it...then I convince myself I will give the extras away....then when that doesn't happen I still can't toss them.....which is why I ended up with 103 tomato plants in my garden last year...😳🤯🤗 I have more room than I need....but I love it!!

I've been hardening my seedlings off for the past week. I can't believe they are still alive, with all the mistakes I've make, from over watering, fungal gnats, to transplanting them incorrectly. lol Thanks for sharing your process, this is my first time, but it's been a great experience. Now I know to add Mycorrhizal Fungi to my roots next time, so THANKS! :)
Your doing great! Water when the soil is dry. I've been having the same problem.
When they are outside they dry out faster and need water everyday. When they are inside without a fan it could be days before they need water again.
I want to start seeds in a small square trays and transfer into cells like you have. They take up less room and you get to pick the strongest seedlings.

I love watching how everyone does things differently. It allows for a lot of learning. I didn’t even know you could just pull the plant out and up pot them. I usually just take the whole block out (dirt and all) and replant them in plastic cups. Then after a few days I see which plants are doing the best and thin down to one plant per cup. Like you I always feel terrible thinning them down.
I’ve also never seen any pull the plant and roots out. I sure hope that doesn’t shock them too much.

Last year I had 2 jalapeno plants, and we were absolutely buried in peppers. I guess you guys use more than us! I wish you a good pepper year.
I had one mammoth that produced enough to get 8 quarts alone. Saved seeds and no luck yet.😥

I have found Brassica seeds are better with direct sowing. Gardener from Ontario.

Seedlings are looking great! 👍 If someone said you're loving them too much, maybe they mean,, youre giving them too much water... not necessarily that you're "crazy" for liking them too much 😆 In my experience, fertilizing them as normal is just fine... (so if you're doing it 1x a week, just keep doing that, even after transplanting...) but just make sure you're diluting it 1/4-1/2 strength as they're so small...

Thanks for the Hydrogen Perioxide trick. I hadn't heard about that before. Glad it worked. I always made a solution for the Mycorrhizae Inoculant to dip the roots in. Your way looks easier.
You are much more decisive than I am! I always plant extra and pretend I will throw them away but I always end up overcrowding my garden 😂

I'm in central Ohio. I started some of my seeds including my tomatoes and peppers on March 1st, according to the farmer's almanac website. They're quite a bit larger than yours are now! It's so much fun to watch them grow, I'm a little obsessed. This is my 4th year growing in my home, I grew in pots in an apartment before. I take pictures of them at night so I can look at them from bed if I feel the desire to stare at them again. XD They're really keeping me going these days!
I love Cherokee Purple too! I hope disturbing the roots so much doesn't damage your seedlings! Never seen anyone do that before! Might learn something!

I up-pot mine when they have at least 3 sets of true leaves. They are usually 3 to 4 inches tall at that time. Much easier when you wait, and hardly no damage. I don't expose the roots if I can prevent that. Like someone else mentioned, keep the others and see how they do.

You can fertilize you transplant seedlings with fish and seaweed emulsion half strength now

Duluth rocks. Unfortunately they make a great product that I love then the next year they don’t offer them anymore. So if you like something get two cause guaranteed it will be gone next year. Bottom water with the fish fertilizer right after transplanting. I did some of mine this week and they were very perky plants the next day after transplanting.
Tough decision-making. I hate that part of greenhouse work. I tend to grow out the ones I can't part with & plant them in random places in my flower beds.
My cucumbers, squash, lettuce, radishes, peas, carrots are doing great, 2-4” tall. Ornamental pepper seeds given to me are taking forever. I didn’t put anything on mine except water.
I hope they all do good. I usually let mine get bigger before I up-plant them. I feed mine when I move them up a size, then every 7-10 days with fish emulsion.

Hope my tomatoes do well this year. I have patio hybrids, beef steak, Roma and orange cherry. You make re-potting look effortless.
Peppers don't like to be disturbed. I sow them initially into large ports, so there's only one transplanting into the ground when they are ready and the conditions allow.

I followed your idea of putting a green house over the heater vent in our extra bedroom. Our house is at 69 and I turned the fan to stay on. The air movement dries them out a little faster but I think it has made the plants stronger. I bottom water and let the top of the container stay a little dry. So far so good. I’m sure I will have trouble making decisions on what to keep when it is time.

I am loving these videos! I am also starting seeds right now, and feel like I'm finally doing it "the right way", as opposed to last year when I basically killed everything. It's good to see other people showing the good with the bad of newbie seed starting.

Great job!! My peppers took forever to pop up, so I thought they weren't viable. I took it upon myself to start some more. Those weren't popping up, so I seeded another tray....and guess what, they all popped up, FINALLY! Now I have 34 pepper plants🙄🙄

Sending well wishes for your plant babies! It’s so true, everyone had their own way and so many ways work. I do a lot of things people say don’t do but it works so well for me! Everything is so climate dependent also. And is you are growing organically versus non-organically, there are differences as well. But UA-cam is filled with info so lots to learn and try!
I water seedlings twice a week at most. Never ever daily, and I don’t transplant seedlings until they have their first set of true leaves fully developed, so for tomatoes their new seedling leaves are around 1” long, and they have to have true leaves that are at least 1/2” long before I even consider transplanting them. Too much risk of disturbing them when you transplant too early. Also when I do transplant I do not take the soil off the roots - never have bare roots the poor things can get shock and kill them off. Always keep a clump of dirt around the roots. The less disturbance to them the better. If you want the fungi put it in the hole of the new pot. As to fertilizer they don’t need anything until they have true leaves. It’s not a bad thing for them to get a bit root bound when they are young. Having said ALL that lol, plants re pretty hardy. But next time start your seeds in the bigger plant start pots. The less you have to transplant the better.

I have no doubt you will have a beautiful, productive garden; you are a success every year you plant something! I like to feed fish emulsion, only 1 Tbsp per gallon of water. at 2 weeks after potting up.

Just darn it! Three years ago, cleaning the garage, we tossed all our garden "everything". I'm so mad, but managing little bit less. It takes time to build up a supply of all the various gardening needs.... I've been saving certain plastic containers for my seed sowing indoors. Michigan is tricky for growing, especially during today's times... I had a mold issue at first, but removed the top cover, and we'll see....
Aww, that’s too bad! You can buy a pack of solo cups. Drill through the stack at the bottom for drainage and they’re so deep th8ngs grow great in them, for when you need to pot up. Hope that helps!
I have the hardest time choosing to let any seedlings go! I usually keep them all and either sell or give my extras away.
I'm transferring tomatoes today myself. I'm going to be hardening them off like my peppers.

I hate to let my babies go too. I usually save almost all of them and then give them away. You look cute in your coveralls!
Rachel add half strength fish emulsion and some epsom salt. It will help with transplant shock if there is any. I also wouldn't be so quick to give the plants left over to the chickens before you know that the transplanted ones take off! If they all take off then pluck the left overs out and save your soil!

I actually sprout seeds in little sauce containers with wet tissue. The tissue is super easy to rip apart and the roots usually break. A good pair of big tweezers and a lot of talking to the seedlings and they all get new temporary homes.
My opinion is they are a little too small yet to transplant. Hope they survive.
I wouldn’t feed yet. FYI - newly transplanted seedlings should be watered from the top as soon as transplanted to settle the roots and close up air pockets. You are doing good. It’s always trial and error.
I’m going to buy tomato plants to set out. Takes too long for seeds. A friend from FL mailed me some okra seeds.
Grow little babies grow!!! I had to buy another shelving unit and more grow lights because I couldn't part with my babies. There were a few that I didn't pot up but most got a new home. Now I have more tomato and pepper plants than I had originally planned but oh well, I guess that is why they invented grow bags =0) . I will start my annual flowers next week. I fed about 2 - 3 weeks after everyone got potted up with an organic liquid fertilizer with a very low NPK rate and then cut the solution mix in half.
Why do you shake off the starting mix when removing them from the tray? Is it because you're adding the mycorrhizal?
I was wondering the same thing! I've never personally done so, and just add the innoculant to the whole cube. However I also let my seedlings get much bigger.
We use a metal baby spoon to get the plugs out if the cells.
I am one of those that can’t throw plants away and I save all of them. What I don’t plant in my own yard I give away
Have you thought about potting on those unused starts into paper cups and selling them from a table at the roadside? Someone else who is still afraid to start their own seedlings might really appreciate them.
Lots of people will trade their unused seedlings for other varieties or types of plants also. I've seen them advertised on several regional/area FB garden groups. Traded for some, too.

Started my seeds over a week ago and bc the tomatoes became so leggy I transplanted them just yesterday

I went out to work in my beds today and they are still frozen solid. I wanted to start the Peas :( I need to wait. Your plants are looking great! BTW, THe sweet potatos the other day were amazing. I want to try that!
Hang onto those peppers for a while. In case you need them.
I don't repot peppers, they seem to not mind the small cell. I planted all my peppers last year, I think I had 40 pepper plants in all, probably too many for two people, I just dehydrated the excess. I don't have the heart get rid of any. Tomatoes I repot once, wait until their 4 inches tall.. I don't feed my seedlings, the seedling mix I use has enough.
I usually just add a little mycorrhiza to the potting mix if it doesn't already have some in it. I think it works pretty good. I'm trying amish paste for the first time this year. Are you potting up to 3 cell trays but only putting seedlings in 2 of the 3 cells?

Wow... your really overcomplicating the whole planting process 😕 I’m not trying to be rude... I’m seriously just trying to help. When I start seeds I throw a few in and leave them... thin them to the healthiest plant... I use plastic cups and don’t replant until they go in the garden. As for soil I just use an off the shelf seed starting mix... I get I’d say at least 95% germination... and I try not to replant them ever when they’re tiny because most plants don’t like to have their roots disturbed. Anyway... you do you... just don’t stress over it. And don’t think that you have to fuss with all sorts of add in’s. I don’t start any brassicas at all because they do far better being direct seeded. I only start all my tender plants like tomatoes, cucumbers and watermelons... and I start things that take a long time to grow because we have a very short growing season like pumpkins, peppers and corn.
