Dear Rachel, Once again, an informative and enjoyable programme. I know nothing about straw bale gardening, so really enjoyed your introduction, and, naturally, I will look forward to the progress reports. Thanks for the excellent tip on growing cucumbers. I expect many will benefit from it. But, what I found very impressive is the vigour of the these vining plants which you grew from seed - beautiful strong plants. Congratulations ! Two observations to close on : thanks for the leisurely pace of your videos, neither too much nor too little; and, secondly, thank you and thank you again for keeping the music well in the background. Sincerely, Larry Clarence Lewis, Ontario, Canada.

Thanks for this video. I had straw bale gardens for 4 yrs. I dug a hole, placed anchovy bate fish, covered it with a little wood ash from the fireplace, covered it with a little straw, then plant. After that, I never had to fertilize again. The bale is the compost, and the fish is slow release. It worked great! Just FYI :)

A tip for people with bad backs - use a plastic clear tube about 1 inch in diameter to plant seeds like corn that go in ground. I found the tube where they have florescent lights at Lowe’s. I use it every year to keep from leaning way down !

Rachel I did straw bale last year for squash. It did great. In fall i added a whole bunch of leaves I just left it over winter. It all broke down over winter. This year I put my potatoes over the bed one per foot of space. Covered it with new straw. They are doing fabulous Cant wait to see my harvest.

Hi. I am fairly new to your channel. I love it. I did a straw bale garden last year - 57 bales. Peppers, beans, tomatoes, eggplant, okra, squash - everything grew well in it. The drawbacks i found were that it required a lot of watering, which was contrary to what i had been led to believe, and frequent feeding. My experience was the water retention of the bales diminished as the season progressed, in proportion to the loosening of the bales due to decomposition and the growth of root mass. I had best luck with water retention where i had three bales side by side and the least where i had a row if single, end-to-end bales. I had a lot of cracking/splitting with my tomatoes, which were planted in the single bale row. A drip line on a timer might have helped but, honestly, i watered just about daily in thd hottest part of the summer and still had cracking. Still had more produce than we could eat and much more than we could have grown in our very poor soil, which is about 80 percent flint rock and 20 percent very thick clay. And the rotted straw came in very handy this year as the base layer for the raised beds i built and am gardening in now. Best of luck to you with yours- i will be following to see how everything turns out and what yo might do differently.

So much fun , I can’t wait to see those and Ruth Stout growing . My raised beds are either 2-3 foot tall , and does help being a little taller ...I’m 64.
I wish I had enough garden space to try some of those things. Maybe someday but I am getting a pretty large greenhouse to experiment with so that’s going to be fun . My husband is experimenting with hydroponics and we will be sharing the indoor space.

Interesting how you can plant more in a footprint because the cucumbers are right next to the squash, but on the ground at a lower level, giving them distance. Will be watching to see how it all shakes out. Pretty excited for you and wish I had started it with you this year. ♥️

@@1870s Another thought: Pumpkins and cucumbers are not companion plants. The bees will cross-pollinate them; it will not affect the fruit this year, but it affects the seeds. If you save the seeds to plant next year, you will not know what you are growing. I've heard this happened to some people, and when they planted the saved seed, they got green pumpkins with warts, zucchini-like squash, and several others.

Following this journey. I am thinking of trying something similar for the border of our little garden next year. This year was direct sow, rows. (I got a couple little bags of bad seed that did not come up at all, so about to replant my green beans.) Not very experienced gardener, 69 yrs young and all I know I learned from my grandfather up to about 7 yrs old.
Live in East Texas and we have had tons of rain in ever since we planted. Afraid my potatoes are getting too much water and might rot. My tomatoes are drowning.
Next year I hope to have a cattle panel hoop green house and can change a lot of things. (My National Pickling Qukes are doing great though! LOL)

You're right...lots of benefits, especially for someone hindered by pain or infirmity! I started straw bale gardening in 2016 literally only 2 wks after my 2nd mastectomy & totally incapable of tilling, bending for planting and weeding. This is my 6th season here in CNY, Zone 5a and I've learned a few things along the way. The biggest benefit is that the internal structure of the well conditioned bale is the perfect medium and defense against either extreme: drought or over-abundance of rain. The nature of straw is just that...a straw that allows water to run through, so unless the dam breaks and you get more than a 2ft flood, your plants never get washed out. And because the interior is always moist, drought and heat waves will not affect those thirsty root balls. I have horrible weed encroachment from phragmites and growing in ground or even raised beds can be futile here. But the only weeds in a straw bale are the rye or wheat grass seeds that pop up...and are easily pulled. I run a soaker hose the length of my bales and only drip water every couple of days. Don't just reserve them for big plants...my best producers are often from seeds planted on top in a light layer of soil. Root crops do great because no hard soil, rocks, etc to hinder growth. And beans!!!! Lettuce, chard and other greens stay nice and clean and thrive in that nitrogen rich conditioned bale. And the season end benefit is all that beautiful rich compost as the bales break down. This year I raked the composted bales over on top of my seed potatoes and basically planted all my potatoes in 5 minutes. No digging, no bending...just tossed the taters in a box and raked the old straw on top. They're already sprouted about 6 inches above the bed in mid-May!
So I'm thrilled to see you set out on your own straw bale adventure! Rooting for you!!! Love the idea of the low arch cattle panel! Very clever! Will be fun watching your success!

Just when you're teasing me with tomatoes, you plant my all time favorite...pumpkins! Can't wait to see how they do! (Have a feeling they may shade out your poppies and borage though! 😯)

I am also trying straw bales for the first time. I used Urea for conditioning the bales. I never did get my bales to exceed 90 degrees. I think the nights were still too cold and i also used tap water that was still cold. 6 tomatoes, 6 cucumbers, 2 egg plant which all look great so far.

Do you deworm your goats? We use the clean out from our bunnies and chickens but I have not with the goats since they get a deworming shot and an overheating shot once a year.... maybe it doesn't matter since it's only once a year, I just didn't know so haven't used it.

Your garden looks lovely. I do have a question about your squashes and cucumbers. Are you concerned about them cross pollinating?

    • @1870s
      @1870s  3 роки тому +1

cross pollination is only realized in the seeds produced so if you plan on saving seeds you would be more cautious about placement

This is really interesting. When you mentioned about your back a light went off lol. I’m not able to bend over much or kneel down at all (knees don’t bend). I’m really excited to watch how these work out.

I see you are planting patty pan squash, I wish I was able to plant some. I cannot find any around here. I have a recipe for a squash cake that my grandmother made. I have never found a recipe like it. If you would like a copy of the recipe, let me know your email address, and I will email it to you. It is my all time favorite cake.

This looks so cool! Patty pans is one plant I really wanted to grow this year but I don't have the seeds for ( don't want to pick them up either or I'll probably get a whole ton of others too lol). Much success this growing season!
