Fun fact! While Dedede’s hammer *is* the same for all alts, the files are actually copy-pasted 8 times in the files- they’re not shared between alts, so it would literally just be as simple for the dev team as grayscaling a few textures and being done
So what you're saying is that… if I were to get into the game's files, and found the exact copy of the hammer for the grayscale alt… I could open photoshop and it'd be as simple as that?
Fun Fact:, Charizard's Shiny in Gen 2 was actually purple but in Gen 3 they changed it to black because Charizadd does not get enough attention so technically speaking Charizard does actually have a Shiny Alt.
Even then, that's not entirely true. If the replay involves something from a previous version, then the replay will cut itself off. I had a replay saved from when I had two Mii Brawlers fighting and the replay was fine, until I used Mach Punch on the opponent. Once that first hit landed, the replay ended. Then, the usual message appears... eventually I just deleted it. Another example would be Cloud's Final Smash. In his Advent Children alternates, if you use Ominslash, the replays with cut off, because of that update, however, if you don't use it, the replay will be fine.
I think Ken is classified as an echo because in a sense, he's the "original" echo of fighting games as a whole. So his echo status is more symbolic than anything else
Echo fighter as a concept is just dumb and inconsistent. As soon as the term was used all of a sudden nobody minds all the clone characters in the game
I honestly think Ken was classified as an echo fighter solely to have the only two SF characters next to each other, instead of having several characters between them
I hate that part about echoes in general though. I actually really like the idea of ordering characters by when they were revealed, but that makes it extra jarring when you get Lucina with the Melee characters despite not existing within a decade of Melee, or Dark Samus splitting off the original 12.
It's more a reference to their shared origin. Ken is what is referred to as a "Shoto-Clone", which are characters that take Ryu's base template, and add minor or major variation. Nowadays, Ken's clone status only extends to sharing the three basic specials (Hadoken, Shoryuken, and Tatsumakisenpuukyaku aka tatsu or Hurricane Kick), but back in the day they were not that much different. Slightly different normals, slightly different throws, and Ryu having a Flaming Hadoken while Ken had a Flaming Shoryuken.
And The Belmonts. The only reason as to why Richter is a Echo, it is because they both copy from each other, it was him or Simon the one that would have ended up with the Echo label.
Really wish we could change the sort order of the characters. One being by series, following the rules of Melee and Smash 4: - Starting top left, list all Super Mario, and then continue through the rest of the series with at least 2 characters, so Zelda is next. But if the series doesn't fit on the remaining line, the whole series is moved to the next line, and the remaining slots are filled by single character series. Series sorted according to the website, but with Yoshi, Wario and DK sorted right after Super Mario. So for Ultimate with all DLC and echoes separate, this becomes 13 characters per row. - 9 Mario, 1 Yoshi, 1 Wario, 2 remaining: F-Zero, Ice C. - 3 DK, 6 Zelda, 4 Metroid - 3 Kirby, 3 Star Fox, 7 remaining: G&W, Metal Gear, Sonic, Pikmin, R.O.B., Mega Man, Wii Fit - 8 Pokémon, 2 Mother, 3 remaining: Little Mac, Pac-Man, Duck Hunt - 8 Fire Emblem, 3 Kid Icarus, 2 Animal Crossing - 2 Xenoblade, 2 Street Fighter, 2 Final Fantasy, 2 Castlevania, 5 renaming: Bayonetta, Splatoon, Persona, Dragon Quest, Banjo - Fatal Fury, ARMS, Minecraft, Tekken, Kingdom Hearts, 3 Mii They might want to consider moving Pokémon before Star Fox for a more balanced roster. This does mean that Yoshi (and Fox if Pokémon is recorded) will be in the wrong places before you unlock anything, but it's the alternative sort. These rules will in general be followed as you unlock more and more characters, but there is a risk that it can't organise it correctly due to having too many characters and too few series, depending on how you unlock them ... not very likely, but in the case it happens, then it will allow for series to break into two lines. And in addition to sorting by character number (1 Mario, 2 DK, 3 Link, 4 Samus, 4ɛ Dark Samus, ...), and sorted by series as explained above, they should also allow to sort by Smash appearance, where Dark Samus is moved between Richer and King K. Rool, and by character debute (1980 Mr. G&W, 1980 Pac-Man, 1981 Mario, 1981 DK, 1984 Ice C., ...)
14:55 Honestly, Dark Samus’s smash attacks not being the same as her assist trophy attacks from SSB4 is kind of a missed opportunity. I mean, they basically come out like smash attacks if you think about it, and it would help differentiate her from regular Samus a bit more.
I think one of the problems is that the devs refuse to drastically change any movesets from game to game, which makes sense for people who enjoy playing as those characters, so they don't have to learn an entirely new moveset for the same character, but that also means if they get it wrong the first time, they're probably never gonna be fixed.
I've always seen where the dev team was coming from with this philosophy. Almost every character plays differently and changing someone like Sonic's moveset alienates a player base. The problem with this mindset comes when characters are rushed and now their mold can barely change for decades on end. Sonic can't feel like Sonic because of his circumstances when he got into the game.
To add onto the whole "Sakurai is biased towards the Kirby games he made" thing, it's also worth noting that he also didn't work on the Nightmare trilogy of games (Dreamland 2/3 and 64) and those games are also barely represented besides a couple of songs.
I genuinely hope Sonic gets a complete rework in the next game. Along with a roster rework. Since Ultimates roster is really just a one time thing. He reasonably should be in the next game since Mario vs Sonic is so timeless.
As much as people glorify and stroke Sakurai’s ego I kinda hope he doesn’t come back for the next Smash because we all know his biases and anti-biases. >”Only Sakurai could do Smash" This is just brown nosing. Kirby has been fine without Sakurai, and some of the best Kirby games had no involvement from Sakura. Hell, Tom and Jerry are as well done as any Smash character Sakurai has made, and we can see how much of a shitshow Multiversus is. If they can manage to make a good character, than someone at Nintendo or HAL easily could. Sakurai is like that boomer still at a company who does one specific thing and claims only he can do it/understand it, but everyone finds out that not only is it complete bullshit, it's very easy to do. I think the series will be fine without Sakurai. It could even be significantly better.
@@pvzmariosonica8fan I honestly think that it would be really bad...frontiers moveset was designed for a 3d kind of gameplay and smash is quite the opposite...some of his moves are perfect...like the wild rush as a side-B and the cyloop as an up throw...but I think that's about it
The fact that the Mii characters aren't in the Random rotation is kind of a missed opportunity. I forget that the Miis are there most of the time, so having the Random option select one of your Miis would have been a nice touch.
11:59 You really could just have him not say anything when throwing Pikmin specifically. Make him say things when *he's* the one attacking. Or when he gets hurt. Or when he dies!
Hearing you prefer the aesthetic of Smash 4 over Ultimate is nice. As much as I do like how Ultimate looks, the use of color is significantly better in Wii U in my opinion. I also think that character representation (particularly for third parties) was more balanced in Smash 4. These are two things that help keep SSB4 as my favorite Smash game.
I find it very difficult to see things in ultimate because of how the shade darkens the characters. When I play ALL Star Mode I always pic Picto Chat or Flat Zone so I can clearly see everyone and everything,?
I think Bowser is the best example for this, in 4 Bowser's colors were vibrant and he looked more like hoe he does in his home series. In Ultimate his colors are really desaturated and dark, almost looking like he belongs in Brawl
I feel like Olimar would only make sounds when getting launched, sleeping, etc. as in the Pikmin games Olimar only makes sounds when talking or taking damage and not when throwing or plucking Pikmin.
honestly, I really would just imagine him talking when launched and of course the star and screen KOs, even when sleeping in the games using the fiveman napsack Olimar ain't saying a thing, it would have been cool though to hear him talk in the taunts(petition for olimar to have a piklopedia style secret like snake and pit but on the distant planet stage)
I think people who want Olimar to have a voice in Smash, like myself, dont want him to talk every time he does a move involving the Pikmin but to just have a voice when doing attacks that dont involve them and when getting hit bc he feels so lifeless without his voice (Im also pretty sure there's a mod that actually does this for him and Alph too!)
Not even Isabelle or Piranha Plant have voices which is weird imo, Isabelle can have a bit of her chattering you hear from AC for attacks, PP can have some of the SFX from across different Piranha Plants throughout the series.
I'd have been fine with a Yoshi costume being removed, if they'd have replaced it with Wool Yoshi instead of Crafted Yoshi. The removal of Fire Mario is unforgivable.
The removal of Fire Mario while keeping Fire Luigi just never fails to confuse me. And black Yoshi being replaced by crafted Yoshi should be tried as a crime.
Honestly, Isabelle is pretty substantially different from villager. While some moves are shared, there’s a lot of different moves that completely change how they play.
@@TheAlienHasArrived at least some moves are different. Dair, Down-B, back throw all are unique, and almost all his moves function differently, unlike Dark Samus or Daisy who are pretty much 1:1 copies
1. Boss Rush should’ve been here. All of these bosses are so cool and unique, so to have them locked behind Classic mode and Story mode really stinks. 2. Bowser, Donkey Kong, and Diddy Kong having wildly different voices than the source material. 3. Isabelle being mute. It just bugs me a bit. 4. Right There, Ride on being removed from the Sonic Music list. I think I understand why (The OG composer left SEGA), but it was such a bop that it still pains me to this day.
Removing Daisy's float but making her substantially faster on the ground would be a simple but great change honestly. Maybe even give her old Peach moves like her Melee Up-tilt or Up-air, and perhaps changing her turnips to match her new attributes?
10:28 Thank you! King Dedede's alts are all pretty great, with the massive exception of the miscolored hammer for his sepia alt. On another note, if you jog as King Dedede, you can see that his robe model doesn't work properly for some reason. The cloth looks oddly blocky near his feet instead of flowing smoothly. Great video! Would love to see more like this :)
The two biggest things that I'd say I hate about Smash Ultimate is the fact that you don't have an option to rearrange the character select screen and stage select screen by series. Unless you can remember what character and what stage debuted in which smash game, it's gonna be hard to find your faves. I also hate how Pac-maze isn't a returning stage in Ultimate despite the fact that it's arguably the most iconic thing about the Pac-man games other than maybe the ghosts and Pac himself.
I can understand the DK stage being missing due to stage morph (being on completely different Z axis will do that but pacmaze could have been the same except they change the gimmick so you change rather than the ghosts
I think the problem with Sonic in 4 and Ultimate in regards to his attitude is reflective of a problem with the franchise that pervaded the entire 2010s (Frontiers fixed it) where it felt like they were trying to soften Sonic, like what happened to a lot of classic cartoon characters.
@@juhadexcelsior his general attitude was kinda lame and shit, there was confidence and a little cockiness yeah but roger didnt really have any enthusiasm with almost any lines in the game, but super sonic definitely had that raw, powerful energy that sonic and especially super sonic needed due to a lot of super sonic bosses being just ramming into the enemy until the health bar is gone
I don't think echoes were named that way due to any game design reasons, but for development reasons. Sakurai originally described them as being built from another character, and I think he meant it literally. Ken might play very differently to Ryu, but you can still clearly see the Ryu skeleton underneath him, and Isabelle's model is very different from villager's to be a direct port. The only hole in this mindset is Dr. Mario though, I really have no idea what they were thinking with that. Guess that's why they gave him so many new animations in Ultimate.
@@Naggfruit To be fair that's actually a very common thing, especially in Smash. To have something go on in a past game(s) and finally name it cause "Well might as well address it." Another example is there's a mechanic in Melee players call "phantom hits" where you pixel-miss a move, it does damage but no launch. They were there, stayed in Brawl and acknowledged with a nae Daunting Blow (I think that's what it is)
The fact that Doc is not an echo or an alt is stupid but honestly makes sense at the same time one thing is that a fan asked if Mario can have special costumes such as Dr Mario or Tennis Mario and Sakurai liked the idea, so he started developing Dr Mario but then he thought fireballs didn't match him so he made him a separate character instead I understand why they did this in melee but why did they still stuck with it in Ultimate? I mean, Bowser Jr uses the hammers while the Koopalings use their wands for their up air so why not do the same with the fireballs and pills? But again many of Docs moves work differently so idk if he's worthy of being his own character or not
They should have combined Sonic's Spin Dash and Spin Charge into a single move being his down-b which changes if you hold or tap b. And then have his side be be his Boost from Sonic Rush & Unleashed and games after.
@@alijahaskew4644 Sakurai tends to overly simplify characters for the sake of balance. For example, in Smash 4 Sonic had a custom move Called the flaming Spindash. It's a reference to the flaming summersault from SA2, that is amazing attention to detail🧐🧐🧐🧐. Sadly it didn't return for the new game😥😥😥.
@@alijahaskew4644 i was thinking the new down b could function as normal but charge the light speed dash instead when held, i have a few ideas of light speed dash could do - give sonic a 1-3 second long power up in a speed boost that also speeds up his attacks - a normal dash could work too, but with the boost suggested earlier it would be a redundant addition - a light speed attack instead with sonic rushing down the opponent, striking multiple times in quick succession
I think the main problem with the Sonic taunts was that the voice actor changed from Brawl to Wii U/3DS. In Brawl, Sonic was voiced by Jason Griffith, where as nowadays he's voiced by Roger Craig Smith.
The real main problem is that they didn't get Roger to record anything new, so they had to scrape together voice clips from Sonic Free Riders, Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations. It would've been fine if they had him record the Brawl lines.
@@silverboltscrapper Smash games in Smash 4 onwards *weren't unionized* It is also why Cloud and Sephiroth are japanese only, as well as why many Smash 64-Brawl veterans have reused voice-clips for over a decade now (or if you're any of Yoshi, Captain Falcon, Jigglypuff, and Ice Climbers, 2 decades). Lucario is the exception being a english VA that gave him new clips in Smash 4. Fox, Falco, Wolf, Squirtle, Ivysaur and Red are other exceptions.
I get that it was unintentional and was copied straight from smash 4 but this was a change that I and everyone wanted, even in the trailer, it was specified that daisy moves will act different and in the final game we don't get that
Sonic Battle would have been a fantastic source for Sonic's moveset. Every character in that game has a diverse moveset, since the gimmick of the game is that you play as a robot who copies moves of his opponents and then builds a moveset piecemeal out of them. The movesets are basically like Smash sets, with a repeated A-button combo, neutrals, and specials. Sonic's moveset is really cool, with lots of breakdancing moves in his neutrals, and some wacky specials like homing rings. If Sonic in Smash had just been "Sonic Battle Sonic", I think it would have been great.
From what I know, alot of sonic's grounded moveset (Notably F-Smash) comes from Sonic the Fighters. They should made his Down-Smash a (probably multihit) breakdance of some kind and ESPECIALLY made his Fair the Axe Kick he has in fighters oh, and uh....getting rid of one of the spindashes...change downsmash to the Stomp (air)/Slide Kick (Ground) from generations and probably other sonic games. I get Sonic's Dair is supposed to be that but we have angles to work with and I can't think of much else to fit that position besides I guess bouncy nonsense.
@@orangeslash1667 I mean, the stuff I actually specified/suggested wouldn't really change sonic's gameplan much. It's not like I'm giving the pain a projectile or a good OoS Up-B, just a few modified options that are probably not that different from their old counterparts in function or a Down-B that is intechangeable ith Dair at best in the air, or worse/situational Spin Dash.
@@gypsysprite4824 Bad news that reason why Sonic is not expressive in Smash, is because Sonic games are so low budget that the characters are barley expressive. Lets just say that Sega is very strict in how characters are portrayed.
The problem is that giving Sonic more variety in his move-set could cause him to be broken, since he's already a high tier character. You see Sonic is not meant to be like how he flows in levels, he's meant to represent how he functions in boss fights. Sonic usually runs away for the boss until they expose a weak point. It's a hard fact too except that characters can be so overpowered that they need to be simplified in order to make it in. You also have to remember that in Sonic Battle, he's not as fast as the classic games. The truth is that Sakurai cares a lot more for balance that representation.
With olimar i actually would’ve like the whole voice thing if they kept him talking to only his smash attacks so that there’s some sort of indicator between his smash attacks and normals, cause currently his animations to not convey those things
"Echo characters" is a neat concept IMO, but they should have some actual noticeable differences, otherwise they are basically alternate skins. If Daisy and Dark Samus count as "echo characters" then Alf may as well have been one as well. Like you said, Chrom and Lucina are great examples of well done echo characters. They could have done something similar with Simon and Richter with one of them getting a sweet spot on the ball of their chain and the other having consistent damage. Samus/Dark Samus could have been differentiated with one of them having slower but more powerful moves and projectiles (same goes for Pit/Dark Pit). I think with Daisy, it would have been neat to see her with a higher risk/reward kit, like give her a higher chance of pulling bombs/stitches but with a slight chance of an empty pull that gives her nothing, or give her more powerful kill moves but with longer end lag.
Besides the lack of the Rainbow Road stage and a Bowser Castles stage, it also seems so weird that we never got a dedicated Air Ship stage in Mario (no the Rainbowcruise stage doesn't count, I'm talking about Bowsers Airships).
17:02 what bothers me the most about this model, is that it feels like they didn't even bother to animate his eyebrows and mouth correctly to give him a little bit more personality
As a Bayonetta fan, her Final Smash kinda triggers me. You might know that mashing the A-Button will increase the damage Gomorrah, the giant demon summoned in her final smash, does. You can tell if you mashed enough when the circle that appears is filled with symbols. And you might've noticed that the middle of that symbol contains a crescent moon. You see, in the part where the moon leaves a hole, there's supposed to be the button that's required to mash there. By that logic you should be able to use the Y-button to fill the gauge and that's usually what Gomorrah's quick-time events use (demons chewing enemies is always the left button on your controller in Bayonetta, it kinda turned into a tradition.) However, you cannot use the Y button to fill the gauge, you need to press A. A lot of people are surprised that you can mash in that Final Smash and it would've made it even more obvious that you can do that if they turned the moon-symbol around, which happens in the Bayonetta games if the A button is used, and add an A button in there.
I'm pretty sure it's the attack button, not the A button. I've set attack to B, because using A for attack is awkward. This means the button prompt must be dynamic to the controls, and how will it work with multiple attack buttons? Also, it seems that you can also mash the special button, so B for you and Y for me. How fitting that I can actually use Y ;)
What also really pisses me off about her final smash is when they reduced the knockback of it if it doesn't kill you past 100% by a lot, but left other final smashes like Zelda's completely untouched, it's so sad.
The fact that meta-knight now has a counter with Kirby Fighter 2 but will never be added to his moveset (with the strong jab he have with recent Kirby game) make me feel like he will probably stay one of the most wasted character with potential of the game.
To be fair, R.O.B has insanely limited source material to pull from. R.O.B was originally just a peripheral for the NES with a limited amount of supported games with not much going for them beyond the gimmick
Fun fact: Charizard's shiny was changed in Gen 3 from purple skin with green wings to black skin with red wings. This _is_ actually represented in Smash, as Costume 8 makes Charizard's body purple, and gives his wings a green tint. Edit: I don't know where I got white from. Edited to be correct now!
I wasn't expecting to hear you mention the Kirby bias with Sakurai but thank you so much for bringing attention to it. At times I feel like just Kirby fans are annoyed or know about it, almost makes me feel like I'm seeing things that aren't real
It's kinda funny how Sakurai has said he has no bias and he only works with what he is given iirc. But I think he lied because Nintendo clearly would have more interest on adding the new games and he just doesn't want to admit it.
@@juanrodriguez9971 oh no he literally lied lmao!! He was interviewed specifically about this, and his answers were kind of pathetic. In one, he said they "planned a epic yarn stage but we scrapped it for the wooly world one" which like, doesn't answer the question for your bias, and secondly he said that the cave offensive stage is actually based on super star ultra. Aside the fact it's really stupid of an answer, if you check the in game stage selection, it literally shows super star and not ultra which is so stupidly funny
Ultimate was just a giant middle finger to Kirby. You add all these big characters and have so much, and yet they couldn't do the bare minimum of adding Bandana Dee or even make Marx who is a Boss also playable if I’m being generous and abiding to Sakurai’s childish biases? I suggest Marx because Rathalos is a Boss and Assist Trophy as well and I don’t care how weird it would be to see Marx fighting Marx when Chrom exists as playable and is still in Robin’s Final Smash. Adeleine and Ribbon aren't even spirits ffs. Sakurai needs to stop making Smash Games so we can finally get good Kirby representation and rollback.
Its pretty insane theres less modern kirby tracks than songs from super star. Like they couldnt even bring the final boss theme from planet robobot? plus half of the modern track are hidden behind the shop.
Sakurai seems to like characters that dont have a voice (and sometimes not even sounds), i actually tend to not even chose them because they seem so life-less... lol Olimar with his deep voice would've been amazing, and the pac-man death sound effect on his star ko wouldve been awesome. I also feel like Megaman feels like a toy instead of a character because he doesnt makes noise, ROB is a robot too but at least he has a ""voice"" 11:20
Mushroom Kingdom U is actually not a starter level 1 stage, it's a collection of a big variety of themes from the game like grass, Sky, Water and Fortress, the main Hazzard of the stage is Kamek teleporting the stage throughout all those places, changing the layout and sometimes spawning Nabbit, in my opinion it's one of the most fun Mario stages It's pretty damn bad that the Battlefield and Omega forms don't transition as well because those backgrounds are unique to the regular stage with Hazzards on, like with Paper Mario
One tiny thing that I miss from Smash 4 is the random stage selector for both regular and omega stages. You could set it to only competitive stages for the regular version while keeping all stages for the omega version to get more visual variety. In Ultimate, there is no separation, so just one random stage selector, and I can't think of a reason why they would remove this feature.
@@becausewhynot8182 you can, but switching ruleset is incredibly slow. The competitive community wanted to use mixed stage hazard rules, but it was deemed too slow to switch between rulesets mid set.
@@rain-jl9zb The time adds up. Having to hold the B button for a couple of seconds and going through a brief loading screen, selecting the other ruleset and going through another loading screen is fine every once in a while, but doing it over and over again sucks.
11:19 Also Sora's gray-scale alt, Timeless River, has his Kingdom Key changed with the rest of him. So it's not like it's impossible to do the same with Dedede. Here's hoping they change this for the inevitable next Smash game.
If he said that during his entrance. I'd become a Bowser main. In general though I find it weird that Bowser since around Galaxy has had a dedicated voice actor that Smash never decides to use implace of diet godzilla.
@@castform7 voice acting is a problem because you can't please everyone. if koopa doesn't say "showtime" or whatever in japan, then there's no chance they could add that in smash
@@YounesLayachi bowser still says showtime in the Japanese release of Bowser's Inside story. In fact, outside of just their names, all the Mario characters use the same voices and use English words (when they actually speak) in both English and Japanese.
Something that bothers me personally is not being able to change alts with X and Y. It's pretty minor, but I've been playing smash since Melee and that's been a thing in every game until now. Having it arbitrarily taken away in Ultimate still irks me. Also, yes, I would like a part 2 please. 🙂
I hate how Sora's unique victory slow down thing at the end of the match only works in stamina mode, and not other instakills like the death scythe, or, crucially, his final smash
In Smash 4 3DS I recall that it would save what colour you used on each character so that you didn't need manually pick it everytime, and they never brought it back in Ultimate despite it being easy to work in I think, just attach it to the names or something
it was a thing in every smash until this one. basically nintendo wanted players to always repick character to discourage players from always playing the same thing
It straight up saved it between play sessions too, not just battles. So you never have to pick an alt ever. I suppose its because 3DS is more single player oriented since you're probably not sharing the device.
I hate that there's no Gen 7 stage in the game. Alola is a sick region with loads of potential locations to make into a stage. Would be pretty fitting for Incineroar if you ask me.
One of the things that angers me the most is in the day 1 patch of ultimate they removed one of piranha plants mid air jumps. Piranha plant could have been one of the few heavies with multiple jumps, which would have Been extremely unique and made him a much better character
you can say the same with most vocal tracks (EX; the DK Rap remix cut out the Lanky and Cranky segments from Smash 4 onwards, even when the remix originally censored by replace "one hell of a guy" with "one heck of a guy" despite Melee and Brawl both being Rated T)
(5:30) It would also be nice if it remembered your alt for your name, like how the 3DS remembered your alt for your console. You select your name first, then character, and if your alt is free, it'll be highlighted. Simple.
One thing I don’t like is that for Little Mac, Smash didn’t include any of the theme music from his opponents from Punch-Out Wii, just the Minor and World Circuit themes. They could’ve put in all those tracks AND also have the win songs from those respective opponents on the Smash win screen when Little Mac wins a match
6:23 Mech Tornado from Kirby Super Star (Ultra) would've been so cool as Meta Knight's final Smash. It would work like Mario's, but is slower and covers all the stage vertically. So, you'd have to corner the enemy to use it. It woudn't go as far as Mario's, but would deal a lot of damage upon getting hit by it
They added the details of Mementos changing when playing 3 or 4 music, and they added Mii costumes of the protagonists to those games + Teddie. Why couldn’t they add Persona 3 or 4 spirits? Hell even 1 and 2 or Q and Ultimax characters. Or the characters from 3 or 4 will pop up in the background when you pick Persona 3 or 4 music
11:19 here's some fun trivia: Seph's alts change his Sword's hilt and grip colors. There's 4 colors for the grips (Blue, Red, Grey, and I think Brown) and his white trenchcoat gives him a silver hilt, oppose to his normally gold one.
About the "no screen recording" thing, it's mainly because it's a very resource-intensive feature. It's essentially recording the screen constantly. So the Smash team probably decided they'd prefer having a semi-constant 60 FPS experience for their frame-precise fighting game over being able to take screen captures sometimes at the cost of missing a frame-perfect dodge because of random lag.
The more I think about this, the more I notice I don't have any source for this... If anyone has a source for this, please comment it here. And if you don't, take this with a grain of salt.
The game is already so well optimized I don't think that's the issue. Recording from replays is 60fps rather than the Switch OS recording being 30fps. Maybe they conflicted with each other and the Smash team thought the trade-off was worth it.
that seems like a reasonable explanation. games that support video recodings are usually nintendo produced games and ps3/360 ports, whereas more intensive games typically don't support the feature
From what I understand, it's because of legal reasons. After saving a replay, the video ends with black screen with some text on the bottom of the video with copyright information.
It gets even worse. DK's voice actor actually recorded new lines for this game. He is Ganondorf. They could have literally just given him $500 and said "Make some monkey noises and you get paid".
@@gebis8515 Sakurai want's Smash DK to be more aggressive to match the Arcade game, so DK's voice actor isn't fitting for this version. As for Diddy, it could be to match Donkey Kong Jr??? Rare confirmed that Dk's partner was going to be Donkey Kong jr, but Nintendo didn't like jr's redesign so the character was called Diddy. The other reason is that Nintendo at the time couldn't use Diddy kong without Rare's permission. Once Rare left now Nintendo completely owns Diddy.
I really hate how most of Kirby’s moves are original in a boring way, with most being kicks instead of his main copy abilities, I also hate how Alph has the least amount of effort put into him out of any unique character origin wise in smash, to where not even in the guidance conversation is he acknowledged, which ends up making the Pikmin series feel like it has been done dirty with how much they could’ve said and done!
I think the reason there was no Animalese for Isabelle is that the Ultimate team knew the New Horizons devs were making a new version of the language, so they didn't wanna bother putting in voice clips if they knew they would be outdated soon anyway.
Like I said before Ultimate released, they should've just removed Chrom's model from the final smash and pasted Kellam's crit screen and a quote from him in. Would've taken so little effort and would've been a fun Awakening gag.
As well as the fact they butchered some of the victory jingles for some series in Ultimate (looking at you, Zelda and Yoshi), there are series which use a snippet of their title/main theme when they have actual victory jingles they could've used that were more fitting (Mega Man and Pokemon are notable offenders here). And on the first point, the Mother series victory jingle no longer being the latter half of the Eight Melodies, which was better than anything they had from Brawl onwards.

13:43 I don't even know anything about how Ken plays in Smash, but if Dark Pit can be an echo with a different Final Smash, Dr. Mario can be an echo with a different Down-B.
about Olimar, I believe they could've still made him have some pain grunts sounds when getting hit that are not too loud so it's not heard when Pikmin die at the same time and hearing Olimar scream during a star KO would've been incredibly funny, also maybe his taunts could have a voice since Pikmin are literally silent during it, as well as the victory animation, I don't think it would hurt to hear Pikmin and Olimar make noise at the same time here. It really wouldn't be much but it would mean everything to people like me if Olimar had a tiny bit of voice lines to give him a bit more character than he seem to visually have in smash.. I believe it is a missed opportunity
I know Daisy and Dark Samus are meant to be low-budget made clone/echo characters, but even then Wouldn't if have killed to give Daisy access to Peach's old forward-throw, down-throw and maybe up-air and up-tilt and even a 3rd jump instead of float, whiling Dark Samus could've had her 3 Assist Trophy moves? (1 or 2 of them could've been neutral and side specials or one of them could've been a F-Smash, whiling the 3rd could've easily been the down smash) and that's just scratching the surface in the latter's case, there's only so much you can do with Daisy but so much more you can do with Dark Samus. Echo Fighters a whole another can of worms (no echo fighters past base-game like Dixie Kong or Octoling for example)
13:34 They actually removed a song going from Brawl to Smash 4, specifically Right There, Ride On from Sonic Rush. AND I AM LIVID ABOUT THE FACT THAT THE RUSH TITLES HAVE _ZERO_ REPRESENTATION IN THE SMASH TITLES Those games are fairly well known for their unique musical style; Rush especially, seeing as that game was composed by Hideki Naganuma.
And while I'm on the topic of that God-damned Blue Rat, why don't we just throw Windy Hill Zone out the door and replace it with something else? Something like... FINALLY we're talking about Ganondorf's moveset, it ticks me off SO MUCH. It's not like we don't know what he fights like! We fight him in like half the games in the series! But NONE of that is referenced in Smash. At least they tried to vary him from Falcon a little bit in Ultimate, but they did it by giving him a sword that he DOESN'T USE IN THE GAMES. He's used swords! Multiple times! Multiple different swords! But when they gave him a sword they just made it up for reason!
There's a lot of things I don't like about the game, but the one I can remember now is: Why Ness and Lucas's final bosses in classic mode just The Hands??? Marx would be a way better option, because of their games theme "scary and cute", it would make more sense to be a boss with those characteristics And I wish we could put playlists to the custom stages
4:24 The bottom right charizard used to be coloured like that way back when they first introduced shinies on the GameBoy Color, but they changed it to black when they got to the GBA edit: nvm other people have already commented that
14:50 Actually dark samus’s roll doesn’t make them a ball, witch makes them taller, so some challenges are impossible for dark samus And the charge shot is higher on samus than dark samus
Personally, the one thing that pains me about Smash Ultimate, is Sakurai went through the trouble of making the Yoshi series separate from Mario, yet gives them no new fighters, assist trophies or items in any game. Like, why bother unless we get something to make it it's own thing.
I think why a lot of Mario stages are the first stage, and Windy hill was chosen is that a lot of smash stages are chosen around what's recent at the time.
no ? this is nintendo admitting that most players have never progressed past the first stage of any game. it's a direct results of games being a single transaction.
Windy hill being chosen to be a stage was most definetely to promote Sonic Lost World wich was part of a deal Sega made with Nintendo to put Sonic exclusives in the Wii U if i remember correctly.
My biggest gripe about the game is that there isn't an option to have any song play for any stage. The Spirit Battles do that all the time, and the update to Battlefield / Final Destination lets you do it on those stages. There are so many songs you just won't hear because one's obviously better, or the stage it plays on sucks (looking at you, Wily Castle).
My most hated example of this is how you can’t play the Tetris Type A remix on Luigi’s Mansion anymore because by the game’s logic it’s not a Mario song so it can’t be used, even though it was literally orchestrated specifically for that stage
That my friend, is exactly why I will always pick Wily Castle if I want to play a battlefield / omega form match. The Megaman remixes are so damn good. (actually include Moray Towers and Gaur Plain in that too)
7:53 A bit of the switch performance is required to have the record feature ready at all times, that's why some games take that extra bit to make them perform better by disabling it.
It does kinda hurt inside that Dark Samus is just a recolored Samus in terms of attacks. From how unique their assist trophy was, and all the things Dark Samus had and could do in the actual Metroid Series, they had many options they could have picked from, in how to design Dark Samus' loadout.

7:52 The worst part about the replay feature is that every time you save it will be deleted after a new update comes around.
Thankfully it's not a problem anymore because there are no more updates.
Usb OTG and the $20 capture card
Even then, that's not entirely true. If the replay involves something from a previous version, then the replay will cut itself off. I had a replay saved from when I had two Mii Brawlers fighting and the replay was fine, until I used Mach Punch on the opponent. Once that first hit landed, the replay ended. Then, the usual message appears... eventually I just deleted it.
Another example would be Cloud's Final Smash. In his Advent Children alternates, if you use Ominslash, the replays with cut off, because of that update, however, if you don't use it, the replay will be fine.
I'm just find it annoying that you have to record it after saving the replay, which means you have to watch the entire match

I think Ken is classified as an echo because in a sense, he's the "original" echo of fighting games as a whole. So his echo status is more symbolic than anything else

@@cryguy0000 Because nobody should mind having clone characters in a fighting game
@@theillusionist1494 why is that? I think having characters that aren't clone fighters would be better off in the place of clone fighters.
@@Stupaipai because they take waaaaayyy less time than actual Characters. Echo Fighters aren't stopping New Characters from existing
@@IsabellaCV I'm still upset that the Belmonts are so similar, when they could have been very different
Really wish we could change the sort order of the characters. One being by series, following the rules of Melee and Smash 4:
- Starting top left, list all Super Mario, and then continue through the rest of the series with at least 2 characters, so Zelda is next. But if the series doesn't fit on the remaining line, the whole series is moved to the next line, and the remaining slots are filled by single character series. Series sorted according to the website, but with Yoshi, Wario and DK sorted right after Super Mario.
So for Ultimate with all DLC and echoes separate, this becomes
13 characters per row.
- 9 Mario, 1 Yoshi, 1 Wario, 2 remaining: F-Zero, Ice C.
- 3 DK, 6 Zelda, 4 Metroid
- 3 Kirby, 3 Star Fox, 7 remaining:
G&W, Metal Gear, Sonic, Pikmin, R.O.B., Mega Man, Wii Fit
- 8 Pokémon, 2 Mother, 3 remaining: Little Mac, Pac-Man, Duck Hunt
- 8 Fire Emblem, 3 Kid Icarus, 2 Animal Crossing
- 2 Xenoblade, 2 Street Fighter, 2 Final Fantasy, 2 Castlevania, 5 renaming:
Bayonetta, Splatoon, Persona, Dragon Quest, Banjo
- Fatal Fury, ARMS, Minecraft, Tekken, Kingdom Hearts, 3 Mii
They might want to consider moving Pokémon before Star Fox for a more balanced roster.
Olimar’s antenna has a bright light to determine which Pikmin he has out mainly and this isn’t in ANY Smash game he appears in.
That would be incredibly useful in battle
It does in project+
14:55 Honestly, Dark Samus’s smash attacks not being the same as her assist trophy attacks from SSB4 is kind of a missed opportunity. I mean, they basically come out like smash attacks if you think about it, and it would help differentiate her from regular Samus a bit more.
I think one of the problems is that the devs refuse to drastically change any movesets from game to game,
which makes sense for people who enjoy playing as those characters, so they don't have to learn an entirely new moveset for the same character,
but that also means if they get it wrong the first time, they're probably never gonna be fixed.
Ok but consider this: remaking a character's moveset to feel more like themselves and repurposing the old moveset for a new character
To be fair, a lot of other fighting game franchises do this. Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, Guilty Gear, etc.
Then there's Pit who got like an entire glow up from Brawl to Smash 4.
Wish they did that with more characters.
🤡
To add onto the whole "Sakurai is biased towards the Kirby games he made" thing, it's also worth noting that he also didn't work on the Nightmare trilogy of games (Dreamland 2/3 and 64) and those games are also barely represented besides a couple of songs.
I genuinely hope Sonic gets a complete rework in the next game. Along with a roster rework. Since Ultimates roster is really just a one time thing. He reasonably should be in the next game since Mario vs Sonic is so timeless.
I'd love to see his moves from Sonic Frontiers implemented into Smash
As much as people glorify and stroke Sakurai’s ego I kinda hope he doesn’t come back for the next Smash because we all know his biases and anti-biases.
>”Only Sakurai could do Smash"
This is just brown nosing.

They only called characters after Sm4sh echo fighters
@@Naggfruit To be fair that's actually a very common thing, especially in Smash. To have something go on in a past game(s) and finally name it cause "Well might as well address it."
Another example is there's a mechanic in Melee players call "phantom hits" where you pixel-miss a move, it does damage but no launch.

@@silverboltscrapper Smash games in Smash 4 onwards *weren't unionized*

Lucario is the exception being a english VA that gave him new clips in Smash 4. Fox, Falco, Wolf, Squirtle, Ivysaur and Red are other exceptions.
I'll never get over Daisy's turnips originally working slightly differently and that being patched
Honestly, they could have made it even more different by making Daisy's turnips a better combo tool but have less knockback

Homegirl just can't win, I swear...
They should made his Down-Smash a (probably multihit) breakdance of some kind and ESPECIALLY made his Fair the Axe Kick he has in fighters
oh, and uh....getting rid of one of the spindashes...change downsmash to the Stomp (air)/Slide Kick (Ground) from generations and probably other sonic games. @@orangeslash1667 I mean, the stuff I actually specified/suggested wouldn't really change sonic's gameplan much. It's not like I'm giving the pain a projectile or a good OoS Up-B, just a few modified options that are probably not that different from their old counterparts in function

@@orangeslash1667 Just make the moves do less damage.
With olimar i actually would’ve like the whole voice thing if they kept him talking to only his smash attacks so that there’s some sort of indicator between his smash attacks and normals, cause currently his animations to not convey those things
And perhaps talk if he doesn't have a Pikmin available in a move that requires one, and talk in taunts and victory poses.
How fitting that I can actually use Y ;)
wow you try on writing in school
It was so funny finding out for the first time that I could mash in the final smash just after playing the main Bayonetta games
What also really pisses me off about her final smash is when they reduced the knockback of it if it doesn't kill you past 100% by a lot, but left other final smashes like Zelda's completely untouched, it's so sad.
Let me serenade you with a ballad from the world's smallest violin

The fact that meta-knight now has a counter with Kirby Fighter 2 but will never be added to his moveset (with the strong jab he have with recent Kirby game) make me feel like he will probably stay one of the most wasted character with potential of the game.
one thing that pisses me off is that Rob doesn't really have any stages of his own and instead takes up the bros' old workplace

The same happens with mewtwo, the shiny used to be yellower and it later gens changes to green

Aside the fact it's really stupid of an answer, if you check the in game stage selection, it literally shows super star and not ultra which is so stupidly funny
this also made me realise why the kirby fanbase is so problematic, picking "fanfavourites" games after sakurai left.
Was not expecting Olimar to have such a deep voice
13:31
I personally believe Sakurai just hates Sonic and only added him to Smash because sonic is iconic
Sakurai seems to like characters that dont have a voice (and sometimes not even sounds), i actually tend to not even chose them because they seem so life-less... lol Olimar with his deep voice would've been amazing, and the pac-man death sound effect on his star ko wouldve been awesome. Mushroom Kingdom U is actually not a starter level 1 stage, it's a collection of a big variety of themes from the game like grass, Sky, Water and Fortress, the main Hazzard of the stage is Kamek teleporting the stage throughout all those places, changing the layout and sometimes spawning Nabbit, in my opinion it's one of the most fun Mario stages
It's pretty damn bad that the Battlefield and Omega forms don't transition as well because those backgrounds are unique to the regular stage with Hazzards on, like with Paper Mario

Blasting Soda Popinski's theme would be awesome.
Interesting......
Common switch L
The game is already so well optimized I don't think that's the issue. Recording from replays is 60fps rather than the Switch OS recording being 30fps. Maybe they conflicted with each other and the Smash team thought the trade-off was worth it.
that seems like a reasonable explanation. games that support video recodings are usually nintendo produced games and ps3/360 ports, whereas more intensive games typically don't support the feature
From what I understand, it's because of legal reasons. After saving a replay, the video ends with black screen with some text on the bottom of the video with copyright information.
The fact that characters like Bowser and the DK reps sound like animals when they have actual voices.
I heard each time they consider giving DK a voice but vote against it.
And Bowser only had a voice in one game
I prefer animal dk but for bowser I prefer the voice
Holy shit yes i have always hated that but nether heard it from no one else.
I can't stress this enough. Whenever someone asks what I hate about the game, it's always Robin's final smash. Chrom is a playable character!
Yeah, they could have changed it to Morgan easily
im not really bothered by this because like, chrom dittos can happen so its not like weird
Like I said before Ultimate released, they should've just removed Chrom's model from the final smash and pasted Kellam's crit screen and a quote from him in. Would've taken so little effort and would've been a fun Awakening gag.
Honestly I don't see that as a problem, is not as if people played as Robin to begin with.

4:51 charizard shiny is in smash, the last alt with the purple, is charizard shiny from gen 2
Squirtle with the green shell is also right there…
As well as the fact they butchered some of the victory jingles for some series in Ultimate (looking at you, Zelda and Yoshi), there are series which use a snippet of their title/main theme when they have actual victory jingles they could've used that were more fitting (Mega Man and Pokemon are notable offenders here). And on the first point, the Mother series victory jingle no longer being the latter half of the Eight Melodies, which was better than anything they had from Brawl onwards.
You really didn't notice how one of the Squirtle alts had a green shell? Or how Charizard's purple alt is literally it's gen 2 shiny coloration? I'm disappointed
13:43 I don't even know anything about how Ken plays in Smash, but if Dark Pit can be an echo with a different Final Smash, Dr. Mario can be an echo with a different Down-B.
I think Olimar and Alph should have voice clips for taunts, deaths, launches, attacks they do themselves (punches ect), and victory screens.
about Olimar, I believe they could've still made him have some pain grunts sounds when getting hit that are not too loud so it's not heard when Pikmin die at the same time and hearing Olimar scream during a star KO would've been incredibly funny, also maybe his taunts could have a voice since Pikmin are literally silent during it, as well as the victory animation, I don't think it would hurt to hear Pikmin and Olimar make noise at the same time here. It really wouldn't be much but it would mean everything to people like me if Olimar had a tiny bit of voice lines to give him a bit more character than he seem to visually have in smash.. I believe it is a missed opportunity
I know Daisy and Dark Samus are meant to be low-budget made clone/echo characters, but even then
Wouldn't if have killed to give Daisy access to Peach's old forward-throw, down-throw and maybe up-air and up-tilt and even a 3rd jump instead of float, whiling Dark Samus could've had her 3 Assist Trophy moves? (1 or 2 of them could've been neutral and side specials or one of them could've been a F-Smash, whiling the 3rd could've easily been the down smash)
and that's just scratching the surface in the latter's case, there's only so much you can do with Daisy but so much more you can do with Dark Samus.
Echo Fighters a whole another can of worms (no echo fighters past base-game like Dixie Kong or Octoling for example)

Like Kamek or Poochy would be fine as assists or fighters, it would just be neat to get something, game to game.
It's probably just a holdover from smash 64 at this point
YES. I AM SO PEEVED ABOUT YOSHI BEING SEPARATE
idc if it would be weird to change now just get rid of the series and let him be a mario character
Exactly! I want to at least play any song in the menu.
That my friend, is exactly why I will always pick Wily Castle if I want to play a battlefield / omega form match. The Megaman remixes are so damn good. (actually include Moray Towers and Gaur Plain in that too)
I’m more miffed that there are some unplayable songs in the game. You can’t play the Subspace Plains on any stage.
better yet, having the music continue into the match like spirit battles would be very nice
