Managing the 5 Variables in Orchid Care (and Book Launch!)

- To be successful at orchid care, you have to manage 5 different variables that all interact with each other. In this video, I tell how a little about each one and present the way I found to record each by using the journal-like tracker called Orchid Journey. Toggling these 5 variables (light, water, potting medium, temperature, and fertilizer) to adapt to your conditions is the secret to growing healthy, vibrant orchids.

For quite a while now, I've been looking for a place to write down my notes in orchid care. No matter how long I searched, I couldn't find anything that was quite what I wanted. So I made my own.
In this journal, you can write down observations about each orchid (up to 5 orchids for each genus: Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium, Cattleya, Cymbidium, and Miltoniopsis) and track the progress of each. With space to track 25 orchids (and 5 bonus ones), you can keep a detailed journal of what is important for you.
Everyone's environment is different; orchid care changes depending on where you live. You learn (by trial and error) what is the best method or technique to fertilize, but come next year, it slips away. By writing down the information you learn, you'll improve your orchid care. Less testing and more results with what has proven to be true in YOUR environment. The most important words in this journal are yours. No UA-camr or Blogger can teach you that!
Did you ever want to go to an orchid show but come time to go, it's been over for weeks. The dates just keep slipping by. So, I've also included additional pages for you to keep track of Orchid Shows, Expositions, and New Books that are launched. As an orchid enthusiast, also I couldn't leave out pages for the famous "wish-list", since we never stop at just a few orchids.
With a summary of the basic care for these top 5 most bought orchids, you can personalize your care and see your orchids grow more each day. If you like to keep track of daily activities, then this journal will help you track your watering cycle, fertilize regime, hours of sunlight, and much, much, more.
Orchid Journey is a 361-page personal tracker and planner -available only on Amazon in paperback- made you you to deepen your knowledge in orchid care as you experiment with different types of care for each orchid. Call it what you'd like-- journal, diary, notebook, observation tracker-- is where you'll take your learning to the next level.

This UA-cam Channel is the by-product of extensive research on how to recreate that environment inside my home.
By no means do I consider myself an expert but I'm an avid learner and willing to share the little I know with others. There are thousands of different ways to care for orchids, and the more we share, the more we learn.
What started out as a hobby has now grown into a passion, producing an online resource of quality information on how to connect with nature.

I love the book! I’m finding it reassuring to record some details rather than trying to remember everything. Using the extra pages in the back for recording orchids not listed in the book. My vandas, tolumnias, etc... are recorded in the back of the book 🥰
Hi Michelle, I'm honored with such a comment! Thank you! 🙏
Yes, the book is "customisable" - I found I had to do this. Very versatile journal.
Thank you Amanda. Having the right indoor is not an easy task. Hopefully, with orchid journey, I can grew orchid indoor.
Hi Abdulhalim, Thank you for watching!
I have a confession: I paused the video, when you said not to because I was excited to buy the book! I came back to finish of course and I can’t wait, yayyyy!
Hi Daniel, LOL... I'm honored! Thank you so much! I can't tell you how much I appreciate all your support even from the very beginning. 🙏🙏
@@Orchideria awwww of course Amanda! I am just happy we can still interact with you before you have too many subscribers and it will become impossible for you to answer all...Yes, you’re that talented!

You are so passionate and knowledgeable. I have recently started my orchid addiction and will buy your book ❤
Thank you, thank you and thank you!! I had to customise my book, as there are a couple orchids not available in my neck of the woods, e.g. Miltoniopsis and Cymbidium. It will work out. Also thank you so much for suggesting the coloured "book marks" - I was like "duhh!" And I found out I do have a Cattleya - not the Lockhartia lunifera (I was grossly misinformed!). A new keiki did the identification job.
I have not begun writing/tracking in my journal as yet as: (1) I am currently sorting out and rearranging some other garden stuff. (2) (*crying here), I have to WAIT for my orchids to bloom, since ALL of them are "NoID"! (Imagine that!). I only know of one Dendrobium "Miss New Yaya" (my very first orchid).
But anyway, what I have read so far has been quite helpful.
Hi Lyn, I have no words for you reply. 😊 I'm honored that the book is helping.
I’m ordering the book and I can’t wait for it to get here!!
Hi Sam, Oh wow! Thank you!!! I appreciate it.
@@Orchideria it’s coming Thursday and I have been checking the shipping status about he very 5 minutes! Lol
I can’t wait to see all of your hard work
And I’m so happy I can support what you do.
Hi Sam, I am truly thankful! I have no words... 😊😊😊
I have already ordered my orchid journey at Amazon
Hi Perlita, Thank you! I appreciate it! 🙏
Good info.
Hi Tally, Thank you!
I all ready have the book it is Great Thank you. Now trying to put it on a spread sheet (not so easy)not so good with spread sheets. .I got my book on amazon . Have read about Phalaenopsis, and Dendrobiums. I would recommend the book to have. I already keep some of the records but added some I had not thought about. My Dendrobium is from Australia so it is still small .I got it free when I bought a phalaenopsis off Esty. I had to ask if was a Cattleya or a Dendrobium .
Hi Connie, Thank you so much! I appreciate it. 🙏 I'm humbled and honored by your comment. 😊
By the way I have 19 Phalenopsis 1 lady slipper, 1 dendrobium.
Ohhh.... I really like the lady slippers. I have a phragmipedium and it's been in bloom since forever. They have a special place among orchids, in my opinion. So beautiful and delicate!
When do you think your spreadsheet be ready ?
I think 2 months. I've been working on it for the last 4-5 months but I usually mess up a formula every once in a while, get frustrated, and start over from scratch. I want it to be perfect without glitches before I post it online. It's 80% done so far.
Hi Amanda, it's Carole again. I have just ordered your book and am looking forward to receiving it but my question is, is it possible to do anything if you have more than 30 orchids? I have about 150 so is there a method of reproducing the pages to cope with this many?
Hi Carole, Thank you so much! I appreciate it. 🙏 I'm working in the excel sheet and that can hold up to 10,000 rows of data. All the info in the book is contained in the excel sheet, but I'm still adjusting the formulas. As soon as that is out, I'm going to post it on the website.
MIss Orchideria, the links on your Orchideria website seems not to be working for me. I get "Hmm. We’re having trouble finding that site", every time I click on it.
Thanks
Estevan.
Hi Estevan, Can you tell me the name of the article? I'll go back and see what happened.
@@Orchideria Managing the 5 variables and book launch.
Hi Estevan! I went back and corrected the link to the places, so they should work now. I am so sorry about that! Thank you for telling me.
Oh, and one more thing, In the pinned comment under the 5 variables video, I added a list of other countries that have the book in store. Sometimes shipping is cheaper this way. :) The link on my website only ships out of the USA, so depending where you live, it can get expensive.
Sphagnum moss!!!! Yikes...have almost lost three due to it compressing,no matter the amount I add and how fluffy it is when first used. I hate the stuff.I have to remember most orchids need very airy medium and air around roots. Sphagnum just is too much an interference with those 2 principles. Only stones, bark and pumice from now on.
HI Joseph, Since my indoor climate is so dry, I can't live without it. If not, I'd have to be watering all the time. I think that is the beauty of orchid care. Each person has to find out what works in their climate and how that affects their growth. Thanks for leaving a comment. I appreciate it.
