  • In this video, I focus on the practical side of mounting orchids on trees. I am using a mount that will go into a terrarium since my outside conditions aren't that great. The same principles apply to both: indoor and outdoor mounts (but for outdoor mounts, use a stronger wire).

    I live in SW Florida, a paradise for mounted orchids🤗. I grew orchids, in pots, for years and lost many to rotted roots until I discovered, duh, how happy they are mounted. I just had a fence built so that I can hang my mounts on it😉. Excellent videos. Thanks a lot😍

    Both videos have been very helpful. Need to mount a couple of phalaenopsis on wood so I can hang in either my woefully inadequate trees or a relatively shaded back fence...... then bring in if we get a bad tropical storm or a very rare freeze. Love your channel!

    I have been very passionate about mounting orchids to trees. The very first time I tried it I was very successful. I had rescued like 20 orchids and mounted all of them and about 18 of them made it. And at the time I had know idea what I was doing. Then sadly the tree that they were mounted on for 2 or 3 we had to cut down. And after that incident I cannot keep mounted orchids alive anymore .😂 I have tried different methods watched hundreds of videos and still no luck. I let it go for a while and now I want to try again. So wish me luck! Im in Los Angeles so our problem here is the heat of the summer misting it every can can be a challenge.. anywho thanks for the video very informative and educational!!!

    That's how I do it. 😊 I use live moss though. Tolumnias are one of my favorites ❤ 😁👍

      Hi Valerie, Awesome! I haven't tried live moss, but I need to. I have a feeling it would be a lot less work in the long run, since I wouldn't have to replace the sphagnum in a few years. I'll order some to see how it goes. Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment. I appreciate it! :)

    Aren't you afraid to strangle the roots, or do you tie it at the base of the orchid, at the first attachment? By the way, I love your way of teaching (in combination with your website and the info there). Well structured and easy to understand, even with advanced topics. I really learn a lot from you. Greetings from Vienna in Austria 😊

    Great video I've just learned something i put the spagnamoss first, no I need to change them around lucky I only mounted them 2 days ago on burned log.

      Hi Mario, I used to put the sphagnum moss first, but none of my orchids would attach to the tree. Then after two years, they'd fall off. I'm glad the video helped.

    I was just wondering whether the Tolumnia in a terrarium setting would need to dry out between watering, because I think of it as a very humid atmosphere. I’m still trying to figure out what’s going to be best for my little girls. I don’t have a terrarium but would like to create an atmosphere that they would prefer. This video is excellent and very informative. Good luck with your Tolumnia in the “mini jungle” I look forward to a progress video some time in the future.

      Hi Renate,
      That is a great question and I forgot to mention it in the video. Most terrariums are humid and certainly wouldn't fit for a drier climate orchid. Usually small terrariums with a small open mouth trap in humidity a lot more. My terrarium is a repurposed fish tank and has an open top. It's more dry than humid since the whole top is open. Tolumnias will be fine as long as they're on the top part. If I had mounted them close to the bottom, the humidity would be a tad bit higher and it might be a problem. Still, my home office is so dry, it's almost unbearable. I guess it does depend a lot on your climate, too.

    Where do you buy your tolumnia orchids? I don’t see them in my area.

    Do you sterilize the wood mount if you are using one found outside? Is dead wood better than a fresh fell tree? Thank you for your videos

    • @Orchideria
      @Orchideria  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Sharon, I totally forgot to mention this in the video. Thanks for bringing it up. If I buy the wood on-line, like a cork mount or choalla wood, I just set it in my space for a week and then use it without sterilization. If I find wood that has been laying around outside, then I need to bake it for 30 min in the oven. I prefer boiling it to baking, because it's faster. 10 min in boiling water works wonders. If you break a limb off a tree, let it sit out for a few weeks until it dries up completely from the inside, just to not have any surprise bugs that live inside it come out. Then you can use it.

    Would you prepare a log by bleaching it? I read that chlorine evaporates in 24 hrs. I have a large piece of driftwood that i used in an 125 gal. aquarium and I was thinking about mounting a Vanda or Brassavola “little star” to it. The log should be good fertilizer for the orchid because of the decayed fish matter.

      Hi Tom, I haven't tried bleaching, just baking or boiling. I'll look into it and get back to you.
