  • To set up a grow space for indoor orchids, you’ll need to provide lighting for 12 -16 hours a day (be it artificial or not), sufficient humidity that is above 40% most of the time, ample air movement such as an overhead fan circulating on low speed, and a way to catch drips such as a pan or pebble tray.

Your videos are very helpful for those of us growing on a small scale at home. I love how you leave your on camera mistakes in the video, i.e., the broken fan. The other thing I would like to have seen addressed would be different types of lighting such as LED, full spectrum bulbs, how long to use them to supplement natural light, etc. You might have already addressed it in a separate video, but if not it would be helpful.

Great information. Based on your video I have purchased a hygrometer, am keeping my fans blowing in the room and am looking for a better table for my two orchids (I am a novice). I also recently bought a grow light (LED) because they are in a N. facing window (my only choice in this apt.) to give them a bit more light. This is a real challenge for me. These Phalaenopsis orchids were purchased by friends as a gift for us. The flowers lasted a long time but eventually died and now it is my task, that I have chosen to accept, to bring those flowers back. The plants suffered due to my ignorance but I think they are on the way back, leaves looking good, roots starting to improve.

Hurray! Midnight suspension is over. By the way, all my orchids are in a plastic container with holes and I put them in a ceramic pot. Should I leave them out of the ceramic container?

Hi Fantástica, I don't like the ceramic pots just because they don't let light and air get to the roots. Your orchid won't die, but it won't be as healthy.

Hi Amanda, can you please make a video on the best orchid varieties for different climates, or direct me to resources for the same? Also my particular area reaches temps of 2°C (35 F) in Winters for a few days, and close to 40-42°C (107 F) in summers. The temps inside the house are not as extreme, but if temps remain uncontrolled for some time, would Warm growers fare better over Cold growers for my setup? I guess Warm growers will mainly pause if I reduce watering, vis a vis more severe consequences for cold growers. Waht do you think? I have got 2 Cattleyas this month, one of them had new growths, and those have enlarged a bit, other one currently has no new growth.

Thankfully for my neck of the woods. My only expense is the plant itself, and probably my water bill. lol

Hi Amanda I have just subscribed to your mailing list on your website, i downloaded your 14 page on fertilization of the orchids. When will your book be out. I had to read all 14 pages I was so hooked on your information, since completing my green house insulated the roof when it's sunny days it lets in lots of filtered light the material in not clear I didn't want the plants to burn in summer I think a lot of people make that mistake they get a green house that lets in to much sun then they go out and buy green shade cloth to cover the green house. My green is out of PPA material it's white not clear it has 6 clear windows which I've used bubble wrap to filter light but also stops the over night condensation. It was a gamble using bubble wrap but so far is working fine there is plenty of light but all filtered light. I open up its big front door it rolls up and let's lots of air to flow around during the day, i am in the process of buying a solar powered fans for the night specially of hot day's use 2 fans in winter depending on the night use 1 fan been solar powered it will come on when the sun goes down. See how we go.
