- Fact or Myth: Orchids Prefer Clear Plastic Pots to Grow
Clear plastic pots seem to be the preference when growing orchids. But does it really make a difference? To determine if the pot makes a difference in growing orchids, I put together a comparison and weighed out the factoring determinants of whether clear plastic pots were the best choice for the orchid.
What are the best pots for Phalaenopsis orchids?
Clear plastic pots with large drainage holes or slots are the best for Phalaenopsis orchids, inducing healthier orchid roots. Healthy roots mean a healthy orchid. Other pots had negative factors that weighed down their ranking.

By no means do I consider myself an expert but I'm an avid learner and willing to share the little I know with others. There are thousands of different ways to care for orchids, and the more we share, the more we learn.

Glad you gave information for the mini Orchid
Soak terra cotta pots for a couple of hours or overnight and use a circular or large drill bit for tile. Amazon used to have inexpensive but other sites have them too.
Well explained Amanda, enjoy watching your videos, plenty of tips👍🏻
Hi M K, Thank you for leaving a comment. I really appreciate it and I'm glad the video helped. :)
👍👍💯
Very informative! Thanks for all the information.😊
Thank you so much for explaining the need for the potting, drainage etc. Straight to the point without talking about unrelated information. Best explanations about potting. I can’t thank you enough. I have orchids all over my trees and need to get them all down to move houses. Now I have better knowledge. Just subscribed. 👍🏽🙏🌾
Thank you Amanda your videos are great. I am new to orchids and find your channel so fun.
Thank you!
Hi Amanda, A very insightful video I'm sure I'll come back to each potting time. Keep up the good work Des
I am learning a lot from you thanks. I appreciate that you get to the point and cover plenty in a short time.
I would like to know more on this topic for instance what is best for a taller oncidium type and how to stabilize them. Well actually more on methods to stabilize them in their pots. and the upright flower spike is well not so much a challenge but I would not mind more ideas does and donts.
Thank you for covering my question. This is my first orchid (moth-white) plant
I really needed this information, straight to the point
Hi Insert Name Here, I'm glad it helped. Thanks for leaving a comment. I appreciate it
Very detailed and helpful, thank you!
Hi Boris, Glad it was helpful! Thank you so much for your support. I appreciate it.
Great video! I live in FL and I grow all my orchids on terra cotta pots, except miltoniopsis, I keep them in clear plastic containers with drainage holes.
Hi Karla, Thanks for sharing! I love to see how other people grow their orchids since it's all about adapting the orchid to your own climate and growing conditions. Thanks for watching my video. I appreciate it.
Great Job Amanda !! I just recieved my first order of sphagnum moss, and its getting about that time to repot a couple of my orchids. I really have enjoyed their beautiful blooms, and they have happy sap on one of them. plus a KEIKI !! Im so proud of that one Kinda worried about the winter coming up, but will play that one by ear. Keep up the good work.
Hi Mark! Thank you so much for that comment. I appreciate it. Happy sap plus a keiki. That's awesome!!! For winter, I have to use a seedling mat under my pots. That's usually enough to keep their roots warm.
I just received a mini phal. Just in time...same size pot. Thanks
Amanda thanks for the acknowledgment. My so called mini Phalaenopsis grew out of the 1.5 inch pot in 6 months. Fell in love with the Orchitop pots which are 3 inches. These were rescue supermarket orchids. We have our ups and downs with roots. Even with root loss they will not fit in a pot smaller than 3 inches. Hope to get blooms this fall. Found a company that makes 2 inch plastic pots. My Leptotes Bicolor just loves these pots. Thanks for this video.
Hi Bettapal Fish, I appreciated your comment, so I thought, why not? LOL. Mini's can be a struggle sometimes with the roots. It seems like the smaller they are, the harder they are to pot.
Hi Amanda. Thank you so much for the information and the great video. Warm greetings from the tropics 😎🌴☀️😊
Hi Nicole, Thank you for the comment! I love how you you write with emojis 🌴🌴 and talk about the tropics and Carribean weather. With autumn nearing in here in Kansas, the days are getting cooler. I miss the sun already. 🌞 Thanks for watching
@@Orchideria 😁😁😁
Amanda, thank you so much for all your very valuable information! 🤗👍❤️💯👏🏻🐞🪴
I found a brand called Rosebud, made of bio plastic. There are many holes, almost like a screen, both on the sides and bottom, so great drainage. Not cheap, a 6” pot is around $25. I like that they are a “plastic” made out of biodegradable materials, but kind of cute too.
Hi Amanda, Drilling holes in terracotta pots use a diamond tip drill bits, I do it all the time no time at all drilling these.
Hi Wayne,
Ah ha! So that's the trick! I knew I was missing something. Thanks for sharing this. I'm going to buy a drill bit. :) :)
One again Amanda ... an appropriate video. I have three keiki Phals in small plastic "pots" (cut off plastic soda bottle bottoms), and they are doing very well, so far! I now realise I have to keep my keen eye on them, since they took a few months to adapt to their "little home". Their roots are good, and so are their leaves. Two of them have new leaf growths. So, it's "close monitor" time. Their mother plant is doing quite well, leaves all over the place, but no spike!! I bought it from our Orchid Nursery earlier this year, but unfortunately, no ID!! (I'm hoping it's white!).
Hi Lyn! I have several in cut off soda bottle bottoms. LOL I also have one in an old popcorn plastic pot. Whatever works and is easy it the best solution in my opinion. New leaf growth is a great sign for the little keikis because they always work on roots first, then leaves, then the flower spike. So if they are putting out new leaves, they might feel that their roots have already adjusted. That's awesome. As for the no ID, time is the only answer. *fingers crossed it's white!
I love, love, love your videos! So happy I found you, you have a great voice and like no music, and you get right to point! Keep up good work! Where can I buy orchid pots with lots of holes like you show?
Hi Karen, Thank you so much for your words and your patience. Something came up and I couldn't answer your question right away. Anyway, I appreciate both. Orchid pots are hard to come by, and when I find them, they usually are expensive. I have bought from amazon before on this link ( amzn.to/3otaCuh ) but their pots are 6 inch to 8 inch, and a bit expensive (in my opinion). If you have a huge orchid with an extensive root system, they are great. They're sturdy and hold up nicely. Most my orchids aren't that big. I usually make my own pots from leftover stuff that I don't need and cut holes myself. If I find a place that sells smaller pots later on, I'll link to them and let you know.
I got my orchid pots from Amazon. They have tons in all sizes.
Buenas noches Amanda.
You can make holes with a soldiering iron. Makes perfect holes.
Hi Susie, That is so true! Thanks for adding this comment. :)
Mary ,here about leaves some one said lemon juice to make them shine.
También estoy usando la hoja de Excel para llevar mejor control. Muchas gracias.
Hola Deborah, De nada. 😊
Forgot to say I give them tomato feed and grow more and Epsom and salt every week and they look better now then ever before with lovely shiny leaves. And reptile wood chip really working good for me no problems with bark or plants
Hi Lee, That's good news. I found that in some stores near me, they really raise the price on bark and tag it as specific for orchids. But it's mainly the same as reptile bark. No difference... just price.

Excellent section on repotting
I cannot get my orchids to re -bloom. I have my orchids in standing green house with plant lights on a timer. The plants are on warming Matt’s. I fertilize once a month
Any suggestions?
hi! thanks so much for the video, i’m just starting out with orchids and i find your videos so useful. but what about glass pots? like clear but with no holes? 🥰
Hi Giada, Thank you for watching my videos. I appreciate it. You can grow it in glass, but it's a while different process called either semi-water culture or full water culture. The watering will be totally different and so will the drying out period. I have a video in both of those, if you'd like. They are under the playlist of watering (I think). I'll check and get back to you. I don't mention the glass pots in this video because I think for a lot of beginners, it's best to try with the potting media first.
I just found out from you, that my mini orchid is never going to get bigger. I don't know how to feel about it I'm kind of happy but I'm also a little sad. Hopefully with your tips I won't kill it like the last one. 🤣
Thanks, so informative as always. Usually I make holes with a soldering iron or hot glue gun.I would love for you to show us, how to repot, or anything else you teach us.Seeing makes such a big difference, especially when we are new, at this hobby.🪴
Hi Vicky, Repotting is on my list to film so it won't be long before I get it made. Thanks for watching.
@@Orchideria Yeees, I am looking forward to seeing this !!!

Hi Action Dhhun,
Thank you! I appreciate it. :)
My phalaenopsis is in a 10 inch pot and seems to have outgrown it. It doesn't have any spikes on it. So, I'm not sure what to do with it, because I have never split an orchid. Thank you!
looks like where i am living so many tulips i leve in the tulip area in holland❤❤
Hi Willem. WOW, that must be beautiful!
@@Orchideria sure does close to KEUKENHOF15 min
Hi Amanda, can u give some idea on how to water n when to fertilizer shelob Tolkien, tks.
Hi Dorothy,
Miltassa shelob Tolkein are beautiful, aren't they? I don't have a care guide up about them, but if you look online, there are several care guides about both Miltonias and Brassias, which are their parents, and you'll find more information. I think they are now called Bratonia, but I have to check.
I don't have a specific fertilizer for each orchid. I usually fertilize all my orchids with the same water, so it makes applying fertilizer a lot easier. I know that's not the recommended method, but that's what I do. I usually apply 20-20-20- every other week and in the mid weeks I apply a supplement, either calcium, boron, or magnesium. I think this video might help you out and give you a few steps in how to start the fertilizer: ua-cam.com/video/wHoT1WFaUzk/v-deo.html
This video is perfect timing. I just received a mini phal and they are in bloom. It came in clear plastic and the roots look horrible. It has a lot of dry roots. I plop it in one of my coffee mugs because I don't have a small container to put it in when I repot it.
Hi Fantastica, I'm so glad it helped. Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment. I appreciate it.
I have feedback! It’s more a question….Where’s midnight? Oh and great video, as usual 😂
Hi Daniel, LOL! Midnight was banned from my home office for a month. She was sleeping ontop of the plants and breaking a lot of them. I tried to warn her, but it didn't work, so she was banned. I managed to get a picture of her on my pathos and posted it in the community tab. I thought it was kind of cute pic, but my poor plants... Thanks for watching!
😊👍
Hi Valerie, Wow, 3 videos in a row! I'm humbled and honored. Thank you! :) :)
Can you buy oblong terracotta pot and put a few plants in same pot??
Thank you so much for another amazing informative video Amanda. I have always been confused as to whether to keep my orchids (plastic pots with holes) then inside a decorative pot. I usually opt to not keep then “double potted” & this video finally gave me the clarity I have been searching for.
Hi Tammy, thank you for watching and for leaving a comment. I'm glad the video was helpful!
We’ll. I just repotted all my minis in the next size up pot not thinking anything of it. Hope they survive now.
Hi Melissa, I'm sure they'll do fine. 😊 It isn't going to hurt them as much as potting them in a huge pot, like 6x what is needed. If they are sturdy, then not that much harm was done. Rest assured... they'll adapt. Since you used the next size up, you're still in the safe zone. Any bigger, it would really hurt.
@@Orchideria thanks for your reply I appreciate it. Yup only 1 size up. I love my minis. Just started the hobby in September and am up to 15 lol. Not all minis some big ones too love the flowers just not the size of the bigger ones.
Hi Melissa, 15 since September Yep? Yep, your orchid addiction is catching on. 😂🤣 It's almost uncurrable at this stage. 😊

Thank you for helping me how to pick out the right pot. 🌸☺️
Hi Jill, I'm glad the video helped.
How do i know if my phal orchid is a miniture
Hi Amanda if you remember me I got 7 ice orchids about June Well they was all in bloom. So I would say there summer bloomers. They ended flowing I say about 2 months ago. All fine new leafs and roots. But one has shooted again to flower again as I cut steams to bottom once the first or second bloom finished. I thought they rest over winter ready for next year spring. The stem over foot going up and definitely tell it's stem and not air root and it's a little higer from last stems which is normal. Is it common to have full bloon in summer and to flower in winter as I would said not winter bloomer. Lee
Hi Lee, That's awesome!! A rebloomer! It's common in Phals to bloom several times. If they really like your care and it's in their genetics, some can rebloom all year long. In that case, just keep doing the routine you're doing. It's working. :)
Hi, Amanda I am curious, if it’s only in the plastic pot, it doesn’t get algae when sun or light is present for a lot of hours daily ?
Hi Vicky, The algae will grow in the plastic pot and that is normal. As long as you can cut it down some, and keep it under control, it's actually healthy for the orchid. It gives off gas exchanges that benefit the orchid. Once it grows too fast, then it's a problem. I made a video about algae that you can watch here: ua-cam.com/video/qOibnlFmMZY/v-deo.html I hope that helps.
