I'm almost 60 now. I read comments about Jimmy's sloppy solo. I just think he just has a hard time with live solos, he always has. He's a studio genius. Take that as it may. I'm happy:-)
You're right, plus I'm 62. According to Page during many interviews, he said that he spent more time than any other member did, since he produced, I think all their albums in the studio. I do know from what he;s said, that he liked to play everything exactly the way they did in the studio but honestly, I believe that it can be hard to remember every little thing done when it was originally produced. Just listen to a lot of their albums, Page pays sometimes 3-4 guitar tracks. 4 were played for this song. This I'll give him, he did a pretty good job during their concert days. What I liked was watching "Celebration Day". Led Zeppelin sounded as good as they did in the early 70's & Jason Bonham was a great choice as a drummer. I'm sure that they wanted him as much as he wanted to be with them for that historic concert. I was hoping 2017 [from what Page said on a talk show] would have been a concert year here in the states but I believe that Robert Plant may have had a hard time keeping his part of the band, if they were to play 25 or 30 venues. Just like Roger Daltrey, being the front man in a band when you're over 70 years old is hard. But like The Who, whom I really like as well, I'm sure that Robert Plant would find it very hard to sing that much. I guess as a Led Zeppelin fan, I'll have to just buy the Celebration Day DVD if I want to hear anything from Zeppelin from the past 10 years. To finish, Jimmy Page does want to do concerts, it's Plant & maybe Jones who might be the ones who want to keep doing their own things & just enjoy life. Oh & that 300 million, or 800 million offered to Robert Plant, Page himself said that he never heard of that being offered to anyone at any time. Ok, I can't think of anything else to say & I usually have a lot to say, lol....

Let's be honest, it's very, very sloppy playing, and I say that knowing I fully enjoy his playing for what it is. His picking is mostly where the "slop" comes from. He sort of just brushes his right hand over the string as fast as he can and hopes his left hand can keep up with it. He also seems to use very, very light strings, probably .009s or maybe even .008s, whereas a jazz guitarist would use .012 or .013s. This helps to keep hands from tiring and to create the illusion of speed without accuracy. I think what you can credit Page for is inventing about 25% of the standard rock guitar vocabulary - something no one else has done, except perhaps maybe Hendrix. He also has a great tone -- that weird, slightly out of phase sound with the toggle switch in the middle, with a very close slapback delay, that is his signature sound. My actual favorite thing about Page is his tone, and his attack. It just has balls. His time is all over the place, but that's part of his charm. He also has a very nice vibrato -- something very few rock players have. My early teacher emphasized developing a good vibrato because it's important and gives your playing personality. He makes a TON of mistakes, and too often falls back on his stock licks. But a lot of times, he has great ideas, and he tries to play them. I also give him a lot of credit for always improvising solos and not just coming up with some nice solo and playing it the same way every night. His mistakes are nothing. His passion for playing is not equalled by many.

It's like what Pearl Jam does with their set-list, Zeppelin did within each song, vary and change......sometimes makes for "interesting" to put it a nice way music but most of the time makes for an incredible musical experience!!
Really the only rhythm section that comes close in rock n roll is the pure power of Entwistle and Moon. That's debatable as I do believe the overall themes of the musicality are very different.
for all the people dissing the solo, it's called improvisation...that's the beauty of music, playing what you hear and going with it...very similar to jazz - this solo is awesome!
Best guitarist ever, still injured left ring finger, not the best technical player but his improvising during his solos is unparalleled, he played risky instead of staying close to the original solos like so many other players did to just be safe
I'm still asking myself how is possible that every time that Jimmy plays a solo of any song he wrote every time it becomes better and better. He never reach the best solo. He will always play it better then the previous time. He is truly the god of ROCK'N'ROLL!
Sorry. Disagree. I love Zeppelin but I never like the "added improvising" or changing it up every fukin time. Give me a fantastic, live, studio sounding song by a band ANY DAY. Very, very, few songs actually sound better "live" than their studio track. There's some obviously, but they're few and far between.

His 'sloppiness' is intentional. Their songs were not your average 3 piece stuff (see Cream for example). To produce the music live they had 10 strings (bass and guitar) and drums. He textualists his live lead playing to bring some dynamics and depth to it. I play lead guitar in a working band and I can tell you that it is a difficult thing to give most solos any life with only the bass behind you. The most important aspect to a solo sounding great is not how fast or technical you are but the chords someone else is playing behind your solo. In this song there is bass and no chords. See his solos when JPJ is playing keys behind them. The chords make the solos come alive.
One of the best ever. Page is so good it is annoying. Adjusting dials and switch in the midst of some of the most complex and emotion filled solos ever. Yikes.
You guys just have to understand Page's approach to the guitar. He definitely knows what he's doing and his "sloppiness" is part of his own signature sound.
+Justin Cheeks Yes, but it is not deliberate "sloppiness" where he could have done a lot better if he had wanted to. As much as I love Led Zeppelin, Jimmy Page has never really been a technical player. Take a look at Jeff Beck's recent performances at Ronnie Scott's - that is pure technical brillance, able to compete with some of the best players of today.
+agm Whether or not his playing is deliberately sloppy is subjective, I for one believe that Jimmy loves to make little points and create moods through his playing. As for Jeff Beck's playing, it is his technical brilliance that truly made him shine. Jimmy Page's brilliance is reflected through his ingenious songwriting abilities and his ability to leave the music up to chance while on stage. Page's sound, stylistically, is instantly recognizable. He did indeed wield the hammer of the gods: his own true, personal tone.
+agm its not important whether he is technically brilliant e All of Led Zeppelins legacy is played time and again year after year. So its not important whether Page meets your fascistic approach to music a guitar is a canvas each man free to paint what ever fucking picture he wants to. Technical brilliance is for engineering music is about expression you and your kind I hope will never quieten peoples mode of expression. years from now people will still be getting turned on and inspired by his music while your comments fade into the annals.
+Justin Cheeks As someone who has seen Led Zeppelin live in 75 and 77, I can tell you that the performances were all amazing. It really didn't come across as sloppy when you could hear all the instruments together along with the audio effects like echo and reverb. The problem is that their live stuff never transferred well to audio. They would be the first ones to admit it.
what a kick ass solo!!! love to hear JP get loose and have some time to play a longer-than-usual solo. And if anyone deserves time to explore in a concert during a solo, it's him. one of my all-time heroes
Can't even listen to Rush, that horrible voice, blah. Let me count how many times we'd all feel like having fun, dancing, and said, "Hey lets listen to Pink Floyd." that would be never! Comfortably Numb, about drugs = heroin, overdose. Brick in the Wall, also drug reference and "pudding eating meat," yeah whatever, other song abt Syd was depressing, horrifying AF. Zep made us feel good, want to dance....rock and roll out. Pink Floyd, depressing as hell.
Indeed, the version of this song on How the West Was Won is probably the one song I would pick to listen to over and over if I could only pick a single song. It is absolute perfection.
Yes absolutely. Over the hills on How the West was Won is maybe the best fucking song of all time. Freaking perfection. The groove and riffing is just magnificent.
It's amazing to watch these clips captured over 40 freaking years ago!!! This is still the most amazing music ever made in this era. I'll fight you to the death if you say there's a better, more technically sound, more musically in on it, guitarist than Jimmy Page. Good God, this band is so amazing to listen to even 40, getting on to 50, years later. I just hope the next generation has something better than what I've seen to cling to, cause Zeppelin is ours!
...I don't think you're wrong, but I don't think you're completely right. Bonham is just as much a musical genius as plant and page. can't add 1 without the other two! =]
My favourite part of the song is how Jonesy and Bono just joust and caress the notes one after another. This to me is part of the genius of Jonesy...so often underappreciated as attention is usually on Plant or Page, but ask many bass guitarists or drummers and what he offers is brought up time and again. Amazing... Ramble is another Bono and Jonesy masterpiece.
Come on Robert. We need one reunion tour before it's too late You guys killed it in 07! Still got it. Might have been one of your best shows (RIP Bonzo) It was so awesome watching Jason play for his dad. Led Zep in 2018!!!
Are people really calling THIS solo sloppy???? Come on people!!!! That is badass playing. He’s totally in command of his playing. It may sound sloppy cause he’s not just playing scales but there’s Harding a bad note if any. In the later years of Zep he was pretty brutal at times but THIS kicks ass. 💯
To think my cousin saw Zeppelin at the Rock Pile in Toronto. Only about 30 people in attendance. That was right before they became famous. Wish I could have seen them live. Tightest band ever. Made in Heaven!
Yeah, great bands. Not one of them stands up to Led Zeppelin at the height of their powers. If you want to have your mind blown. Check out the 1970 Royal Albert Hall show. They’re young and coming off of Led Zeppelin II coming out. Page in particular, in his argyle sweater is on fire. Bonham is unstoppable and JPJ is the glue there playing or doing whatever is necessary on any given song. The band is absolutely blowing the doors off the building. Such raw power. Unparalleled. Unmatched.
Genesis, Yes (one of my top 5 bands), Jethro, all great but there was just something so powerful and raw about Zeppelin. Something more. More than just John Paul Jones
The Earls Court Show that night was one of if not THE GREATEST SHOW of ALL TIME !! Them boys came to play that night for real , PEACE LOVE LED ZEPPELIN
Whats so impressive is that he came up with the intro to this song during an improv section "black mountainside". And not only that but all the places Page went with this song. That crazy solo and all the verse riffs -its impressive as hell
The quintessential Zep. Understated but powerful solo to open. Romantic, quasi mystical lyrics, then guitars drums and bass to drive the song through to crescendo. No other band can do this. A pocketful of gold.
The majesty and power of Led Zeppelin on full display. I never had the opportunity to see them. I just missed them in their day. JPJ & Bonzo are the best rhythm section of all time. Page must have enjoyed going off the rails knowing they would be there to pull him back into the pocket.
It's so unique how Plant seems to jump to the future as if he's lost his voice in 2030. Love how he shifts his voice to something completely different than the studio version. True master!
I know he improvises regularly just like Paige, but I almost feel like he didn't trust his voice that night. It just didn't sound right to me. Maybe it's better he didn't try to hit the high notes that night who knows?
Led Zeppelin is my favorite ROCK group ever...theyre in my heart and soul...when my friends hear them on the radio...they think of me..Im told...Love you Robert XO Tina
No words have been invented yet that describe how much I love and appreciate this band. Perfection has never been so perfect. I'm blessed that I get to walk this Earth with my Rock Gods! Respect to the best.
Best Rock Band EVER. Great to hear and see these old videos, but nothing compares to actually having seeing them live in the 1970's when they totally dominated in concert. The shows at the LA Forum were spectacular events to attend and the Earls Court performances from '75 look to be nearly as stellar. Thank you Jimmy, Robert, John Paul and John (RIP) for all the great memories.
That was kickass, loved the Page solo here, very different and if you know his live material, some hints of other lead playing from TSRTS's No Quarter..very cool version!
Back in the day, we just listened on the radio and bought albums/8-tracks. Never thinking all these bands/artists would become icons even legends. So-called artists now can't even begin to compare. Totally a special place in time never to be again...
I think most people forget that Page broke his finger right before this tour started and never had time to let it recover, so he did the tour with it broken. He coped with the pain by drinking copious amounts of alcohol and then drugs. Hence the sloppiness from his '75 shows. This is especially obvious at the beginning of the solo where he slides into the note instead of bending up to it. His main bending finger hurt to much he basically had to find new ways to play his songs
In my opinion, tthe concert at Earl´s Court 1975, must be one, if not the , best concerts they ever made! All the optimism, all the joy and all the sexiness......
I'm really surprised people don't like the solo in this, there are a few moments that i would say are bad and it is in a sloppy style for some parts. But for the most part its an amazing improv/jam, the hecticness of it is what makes it feel like rock and roll. It's reckless, cool and it jumps out and attacks you when listening.
He actually made a lot of mistakes and went out of key here, but look how he smartly repeat the same mistake on purpose and make it look intentional, almost giving it a sense, this is how rock and roll is conceived, nowdays guitar hereos are just too clinic, and boring in the long run...
As a 57 yr. old American man, I want to thank England, for giving us the best rock n roll, EVER!

does anyone remember when music was exciting, exhilarating, dangerous and beautiful at the same time....
for all the people dissing the solo, it's called improvisation...that's the beauty of music, playing what you hear and going with it...very similar to jazz - this solo is awesome!
Best guitarist ever, still injured left ring finger, not the best technical player but his improvising during his solos is unparalleled, he played risky instead of staying close to the original solos like so many other players did to just be safe
im 43 years old and this is the best rock band of all time. Jimmy Page is GOD and GOAT
I guess the beauty of being the author of the solo is that you can play it however you want. Envy can be such an ugly emotion.
yes
There's something mesmerizing about watching JPJ play the bass. His movements are just so focused and coordinated.
The gov'ner
Ikr! His moves @2:13 is so on point. I’m mesmerised.
The secret weapon of Zeppelin was JPJ!! Amazing talent
also at 5:40 you can hear page playing the riff getting sloppy but jpj is on time like a computer
@@Drewg351 Its because they were all loaded at the time, Id love to see you do better, dont knock thee greatest group or guitar player of all time bud 🤣🔥🤘
@@mrmojorisin6496, give me a break. They're being paid hard earned money from fans and they come out high, drunk, and sound like shit, and that's to be admired ?? No fukin way. And your comment of "I'd like to see you do better" is ignorant and absurd. These guys should've shown up sober, straight, and well rehearsed looking to give their fans the greatest show possible. This definitely wasn't it. Not even close. Just because "they're stars" doesn't mean they can, or should, treat their fans to a shitty, drunk, embarrassing show. I'm sure you think Axel Rose showing up an hour late or walking off the stage after 5 minutes or 1 song is acceptable too because "that's what rock N roll stars do". No. They do it because dumb fans put up with their bullshit. Just admit it: they sounded like shit. Stop making excuses for them.
@@Drewg351 I only got one question.. How old are you? 🤔🤣
@@mrmojorisin6496, I'm 53. Been to plenty of great shows. I believe in personal responsibility. Showing up high, drunk, and sounded like shit, is embarrassing. I don't give a fuck if their rock God's. Give the people your BEST, not your drunken, stoned best, which actually sucks. Sorry. No excuses.
Jimmy Page was the Master that everyone else tried to copy ....
Mark Bapst and most of them died doing horse,,, real riffmeister,, sloppy live player
Not very impressive
Indeed. And Bonham was the greatest drummer ever. What a band.
No your reply just topped it for the most ignorant, bullshit, delusional comment ever!
Not gonna lie about it myself
One of the best ever. Page is so good it is annoying. Adjusting dials and switch in the midst of some of the most complex and emotion filled solos ever. Yikes.
Thank you mrs. Page for giving us the best guitar player in history
Yes!!!! Fact
Jimmy just had the best god damn sound for that time. LP threw a modified plexi was all he needed. His riffs and legacy will live forever.
You guys just have to understand Page's approach to the guitar. He definitely knows what he's doing and his "sloppiness" is part of his own signature sound.
+Justin Cheeks no he is strung out and couldn't pull of his own material.
Jimmy's playing was dangerous man. Thats why yr all here. Y'all like the dirt. Face the facts x 😊
Never loved rock until I heard Zeppelin. Jimmy Page STILL rules!
We're all really lucky to have this footage when it all comes down to it 😅🔥🙌
The legacy of this group has no end, 50 years later they are still present in our minds, incredible, the greatest rock band of all time.
what a kick ass solo!!! love to hear JP get loose and have some time to play a longer-than-usual solo. And if anyone deserves time to explore in a concert during a solo, it's him. one of my all-time heroes
Jimmy is so fucking mesmerizing. !! Love him!
The Worlds Greatest Rock Band. Ever. I have seen about everyone, over 100 bands, and Nobody delivered live like them. Pink Floyd and Rush came close.
@@christopherone1 Well said!!
I still haven't met anyone who listens to Floyd that doesn't do drugs.
Brilliant song,exellent,lyrics,vocals,playin ~ Led Zeppelin = Exellent🎸🎙🎹🥁👌
i still liked the solo regardless. It's what John Paul, and Bonham did to make it work like it did. This band was a true machine, and still is today.
Couldn't agree with you more. And bloody hell the solo was not that bad.
Probably my favorite Led Zeppelin song. The version from How the West Was Won is the best live version I've heard.
+Paulo Pereira Link? (Was about to search but, lazyness set in)
tinha que ser brasileiro pra gostar de Zed Zepelim
Indeed, the version of this song on How the West Was Won is probably the one song I would pick to listen to over and over if I could only pick a single song. It is absolute perfection.
Yes absolutely. Over the hills on How the West was Won is maybe the best fucking song of all time. Freaking perfection. The groove and riffing is just magnificent.
HtWWW is so well engineered; incredible sound! Zeppelin was definitely at the top of their game the summer of 1972.
Bless the great Mr. Page for all the great riffs through the years. So glad I was there to hear them.
Eloquently spoken-Amen
Spoken like a true fan.
If some people learnt to play the blues they'd learn to improvise, jimmy Page playing is flawless in my opinion 💚🎸🍻🤘
My High School class song. Love Zeppelin. All four were awesome, but Page is my favorite guitarists of all time.
When you truly go over the hills and far away rocking out to this song, you never come back.
this version is great!!especially jimmy's solo.i love that he never sounds the same
stop judging him and enjoy music!
that's right
There are no two artists better than Plant & Page so passionate, magical, mystical, epitome of gods. Page is riveting & lovely at the same time.
...I don't think you're wrong, but I don't think you're completely right. Bonham is just as much a musical genius as plant and page. can't add 1 without the other two! =]
@@Osmien118 u all sleeping on jpj..
They are all the greatest along with deep purple
inverted some might say
Agreed but the same natural groove I hear with free kossoff an rodgers is close.
Anyone dissing Jimmy on this classic is out of their minds!!
Earl's Court was an incredible show
Page at his decadent best. Four great musicians pushing the limits of the genre that they created.
My aren't we lucky to have this HD Footage! Better than 8-track.
I was Born in 1963... I heard Led Zepplin in 1969 ...6 yrs Old ..& that was it...Rock n Roll ...😈
Epyx911 its BONZO. Like the dog mane!
Bono was never in Zeppelin
Indeed, notice that sweet spot at 5:06, it's like a huge explosion.
U2 sucks
I like maybe 3 of their songs but yeah, for the most part they suck.
Wow! Totally blown away by the solo & whole performance. Totally amazing.
I am so glad I grew up listening to led Zeppelin!❤❤❤
The solo has so much attitude! XD
John Paul Jones is laying it down!
HE ALWAYS LAYED IT DOWN !!
JPJ il Maestro
this is the best rock roll band ever end
OH YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel alive listening to this. This is my favorite Led Zepplin song.
Come on Robert.
We need one reunion tour before it's too late
You guys killed it in 07!
Still got it. Might have been one of your best shows (RIP Bonzo)
It was so awesome watching Jason play for his dad.
Led Zep in 2018!!!
That was the most beautiful 8 minutes 30 seconds of my life.
What more can be said ?
1975 Earls Court Led Zeppelin has been, "The Best", listening experience regarding Led Zeppelin in my entire life. Thank you!
Page is a badass. In sheer ferocity and power, his playing here even outshines his guitar solo on "It's Not Unusual" by Tom Jones
To think my cousin saw Zeppelin at the Rock Pile in Toronto. Only about 30 people in attendance. That was right before they became famous. Wish I could have seen them live. Tightest band ever. Made in Heaven!
ZEPPELIN IS THE GREATEST BAND EVER.... PERIOD
INDEED!
Off all time
Yes there the reason all others exist!!!!
Well I was at this concert and I can assure you I was loving every minute, sloppiness didn't spring to my mind.
How could any other band ever compete with this ?
The mid section playing is fucking incredible !
Wishbone Ash раннего периода до 1975
Ever hear Genesis, Yes, Jethro Tull, etc? Lots of great stuff in this era. 😎
I saw Led Zeppelin may 22 1973, in San Antonio Texas, Hemisphere convention center. I'll never forget it.
Saw them in Pittsburgh one month later
The Earls Court Show that night was one of if not THE GREATEST SHOW of ALL TIME !!
Them boys came to play that night for real ,
PEACE
LOVE
LED ZEPPELIN
2:29 - 5:50 one of the best solo i have ever heard !
The video quality is amazing. Feels like I'm there!
Whats so impressive is that he came up with the intro to this song during an improv section "black mountainside". And not only that but all the places Page went with this song. That crazy solo and all the verse riffs -its impressive as hell
0:50 when you think you forgot your phone at home then you feel it in your pocket
Maybe it's better he didn't try to hit the high notes that night who knows?
he had vocal surgery in 1973 and it really affected the 75 tour. as well as the flu. Funny - I thought he sang better in 77!
He was never the same after 1972. His voice went downhill after.
Jimi page is a genius nobody will ever write the guitar book like him
Awesome, I think it sounds way better live. Jimmy Page is a Guitar God, period.
grew up - listening to them all the time, will always hold a special place in my heart for their music
That was kickass, loved the Page solo here, very different and if you know his live material, some hints of other
lead playing from TSRTS's No Quarter..very cool version!
Back in the day, we just listened on the radio and bought albums/8-tracks. Never thinking all these bands/artists would become icons even legends. So-called artists now can't even begin to compare. Totally a special place in time never to be again...
I reckon this is what a real bona fide guitar god looks and sounds like
I think most people forget that Page broke his finger right before this tour started and never had time to let it recover, so he did the tour with it broken.
One of the most beautifull songs that i ever heard!
So powerfull!
The coolest guitar player ever! Badass solo!
This is THE GREATEST BAND EVER!!!!
amazing solo, takes you on a journey. Ups and downs, so great, so great to hear how they play off each other
ohh jimmy page and your guitar solos
pagey is unbelievable saw zep many times live all I could think was wow incredible best times I ever had
5 nights in a row, 3 hours+ like yeah I would be "Burned Out" too
I love the guitar solo of this version, imagine this but with the vocals from 1972 robert plant, it would be the best version possible
Just realised I was there that night - 3 hours long if I remember correctly.
you lucky person
Page is totally a great guitarist of all time , and never a boring performance
This when Jimmy showed no one could touch him
In my opinion, tthe concert at Earl´s Court 1975, must be one, if not the , best concerts they ever made! All the optimism, all the joy and all the sexiness......
Yeah man that solo was an out of body experience
I saw this show at LA's Fabulous Forum 1975
This is gold to my ears! Amazing! And when you critics can play like Jimmy, then you can comment. Pathetic that you think he is off. Whatever.
Song is older then me ! One of my favorite Led. songs to date, almost 40 years later and there still popular!
To my knowledge Page didn't use very many pedals either. It's amazing how many different tones and sounds he could get just by his approach.
Honestly maybe Led Zeppelin’s best concert
I'm really surprised people don't like the solo in this, there are a few moments that i would say are bad and it is in a sloppy style for some parts. But for the most part its an amazing improv/jam, the hecticness of it is what makes it feel like rock and roll. It's reckless, cool and it jumps out and attacks you when listening.
Don't like the solo??? Dudes fingers are on fucking fire!!! Only deaf people don't enjoy the solo!
Page is God !
wondering solo more like it.
He actually made a lot of mistakes and went out of key here, but look how he smartly repeat the same mistake on purpose and make it look intentional, almost giving it a sense, this is how rock and roll is conceived, nowdays guitar hereos are just too clinic, and boring in the long run...
Henryguitar95 I want to hear the people who dislike the solo do better.
