He does both the shouting and whispering live, pretty impressive
His voice is shot these days sadly
@@protoindoeuropean I think it's more about his choice of vocal style (which he started changing almost 20 years ago) rather than him being truly unable to sing like before.
@@protoindoeuropeanYou can tell he’s not using the proper technique, which definitely adds to the uniqueness of his vocals. Dude sacrificed his voice to put out bangers.
@@protoindoeuropean humans when they realize voice changes with age and time 😱

if you haven't done it yet, you should react to their song aerials
Yessss
Not interested in listening to 15 minutes of talking. 5 minutes would suffice. Even with edits way too much of the song gets killed.
@@soundsannin1870ok keep us updated
Preach that gospel. I'm just happy to hear a generation get onto it
@@soundsannin1870The entire point is the analysis, if you wanted to hear the song in its entirety just go to it. Plus she'd get knocked by copyright if she listened to it straight through.
Oh boy, Serj and Daron's harmonies are fantastic. I'm sure I said this on the last one, but you should check out one of the tracks in their later albums when they perfected that sound. "Question!" "Hypnotize" "Holy Mountains" "Soldier Side" are all good choices.
Spider is amazing too
I was going to suggest all of those hahaha good picks my dude!
Not anymore :(
A lot of bands are afraid to make that clashing sound, but when used correctly they are great.
YES PLEASE! Soldier Side or Questions are so underrated! Or lost in Hollywood!
SOAD is one of those bands that we all loved, but didn't quite appreciate the way we should have...I had all the CD's, went to the concerts, etc. but I honestly don't think that I ever realized just how special they were until after they were gone...great reaction.
I was lucky enough to see them in 2014 when they did something like a 6 show tour together. Still probably the best show I've ever seen.
I agree. I remember the year "Steal this Album" came out. My parents had a little garden with a hut near the Forest 3-4 km outside of our village, and in the christmas holidays 3 friends and i(we all were between 16 and 18) walked there every evening, freezing our asses off, listening to Toxicity and Steal this Album up and down every day for like 4 weeks, jugging some beers in the candle light and singing along and burning through countless batteries on a portable CD Player. Those were a simple, but the best time back then. Some time later i actually met a girl because of Mezmerize, when i was blasting BYOB so loud on my Minidisc Player that the busdriver kicked me out after people complained and while i was pretty embarassed, she actually got off the bus laughing and asking if we can listen together. married since 12 years now. i really connect some of the best moments in my life with SoaD.
@@Vittrich That's a tremendous story!... Congrats...
Totally agree. I enjoyed them back in the day, but now that time has gone on they have really solidified as a very legendary and unique band that I wish had invested more of myself into then
wikipedia doesn't say that they stopped going on tour?
Armenian folk + Metal + Rick Ruben = Legendry art
This one's a classic. It's a very surprising song in many aspects and you nailed your analysis as always. Great reaction, too. Have a nice weekend ❤
“Question” I think you’ll love it!
They’ve said this song is about how people are perceived more based on how they die than on how they lived, especially if it’s a “shameful” way like suicide or an overdose. The original title was just Suicide, but the label wouldn’t let them use it so they chopped suicide in half, hence Chop Suey. Them eating Chinese food in the video was kind of an fu to the studio. The verse lyrics are references to the daily thought processes of a suicidal/addicted person.
Good job I checked the comments, there would have been an identical one to yours had I not. Nice one.
I like BYOB, it's got an interesting and unusual structure too and the lyrics are very topical (though political as a lot of their songs are). It's very catchy too.
That last part hits so hard. Beautiful melodies!
Jen, you're just the best: "This drum kit looks insane... which is fun". Haha
I really enjoy your enthusiasm Jen. Great reaction. Thanks for sharing.
B.Y.O.B. is a must hear for everyone getting into S.O.A.D.
With these two videos you have brought me back to middle school me. And I somehow still have the words in memory. So strange but I thank you for bringing this back into life
their vocals work so well together, i’d recommend checking out ‘Question!’ or ’Hypnotize’ from them
"Spiders" and/or "Questions!" would make great choices for next vocals reactions :)
Great reaction, perfect balance of analysis and appreciation.
You are the very best at what you do. Your reactions are always entertaining without being repetitive and silly. You don’t throw pens or walk away from the screen… or repeatedly say, “I’m not ready”. Your reactions are also educational without being boring and overbearing. You let us know what they are doing vocally and how it affects the song. You are always so fun to watch and I am so thankful you create what you do. It always makes me smile. Thanks again.
Really..?? She´s LITERALLY the WORST music related reactor Ive ever, EVER encountered, to me.. And Im not trying to start an argument here, or trying to discuss who´s right.. Just saying how curious the human brain is. You think she´s the best at what she does, when I struggle to imagine how someone can even watch a video of hers without getting furious xD
@@gabrielp9646 that’s the beauty of it. Everyone is different and we can look at the same thing and have two totally different takeaways. It is ok that we don’t agree. I know that’s a crazy idea for this day and age…. Where two people can disagree and not hate each other or fight…. But your opinion is as right as mine…. They are just different. Keep rocking out!!
@@gabrielp9646 I feel like you watched a completely different video to me.
Pretty as always Jen 😍🥰 keep it up 🤘🏼
Hi Jennifer hope you are having an great and awesome weekend ❤
Hi Jen! Like I've said before, you are so good at R&As that you can analyze ALL types of music. Although not my usual genre, I say, interesting dynamics. 😳
Have a wonderful day! 😁😎
Thank you!!
lovely reaction as always...)
Loved your analysis! You should definitely react to more of their songs! I highly recommend Aerials next 😊
Hi Jen! This is my favorite SOAD song. It really does take the listener on a journey. I also like that the band is asking serious questions about real issues. Serj's voice has a very conversational style at times, which draws the listener in. I love their harmonies as well. Great reaction! Hey, I thought I'd mention that Angelina Jordan's new EP is out. I'll recommend Now I'm The Fool, but only because it has a music video. All the songs are fire and available from Angelina's official site. If you don't mind no video, check Good In Goodbyes instead for some Motown icing on the cake.
Sugar, B.Y.O.B, Question! are good choices
Hey there. I’m new to your videos but I love them so far! I’m a pentaholic so I got here through them. I love that you react to a variety of genres. That’s so cool! I would love to recommend Boygenius. Specifically their songs Salt in the Wound and $20. In both songs, Phoebe Bridgers does this incredible on-key scream that just gives me shivers. I’d love to hear what you think.
Now I'm gonna think "AUNTIE!" in my head everytime I listen to this song, thanks! 😅 I really enjoyed this analysis as well.
😂🙈
The idea of him screaming "Auntie" made me laugh a lot.
I'm new, but please do "streamline" there is no video, studio version is good. But i think this song really encapsulates these guys just as much as their bangers. Trust me
Serj has such a wide arsenal of vocal tricks that he can do to enhance an already impressive voice. In this song alone we saw him pull off a few quick vocal riffs, growls, a cry, a whine, and being able to alternate his mouth position to work different vowel changes - which they did a few times. I always enjoy his harmonies with Daron (guitarist). Daron does a great job hitting those higher sections in the harmonies, and I get a kick out of SOAD newbies thinking aloud "They don't look like they should sound like that." Thanks for another wonderful review, Jen! :)
the thing is i found daron's voice (the crazy guitarist) to be very unique and somehow addictive. daron's singing as the main vocal in the song "lost in hollywood" is somehow very soothing and very interesting to me, and i think that he's a very good singer too. a proper singer. and that song "lost in hollywood" is probably my favourite song even though it does't have it's own music video. you should check out that track. very interesting vocal there.
Another accurate reaction and understanding
Fun fact: The song was originally supposed to be called Sui**de, but the label thought it was a bit too edgy. So they "chopped" it in half, hence "chop suey".
Brief explanation
This, like most SOAD songs, always has a deep message.
Let's define the premise, starting from the look
of the song is based on L0s Angeles, the
Armenian band members and various lines
of music depict the Armenian way of life
and also Los Angeles being the biggest
Armenian community outside Armenia. Then
the song speaks strongly about the roots
band Armenians.
Toxicity according to band member
Daron Malakian is on Deficit Disorder
of attention. But the metaphor can be
extended to the letter I think it has
a very deep meaning.
Now the line " conversion software
7.0 version" parodies the forced release of
AOL version 7.0 in 2001 where it was essential
everyone to update. The members are
trying to convey that we are being
controlled by corporations that force us
to make these changes and updates by
cause of their profits. The second line, which
says look at life through the eyes of a hub
tired, exemplifies the narrow mindset
of people who do not see the general picture of
corporate greed and still continue to
do what they are doing.
Now, eating seeds for Armenians is
LITERALLY an activity of
hobby. I heard that in Armenia the
most men are on the streets, without
job, spending time eating
sunflower seeds... it's everywhere
place. It is said that even in the USA you can
see the trail of sunflower seeds leading
to Armenians (specifically Armenians who
came from Armenia).
You have clutter - There is a lot of clutter
in Armenia. There are no jobs, the police are
corrupt, the government is linked to the mafia and the
protesters are brutalized. People
in Armenia are apathetic, hopeless and
gave up to some extent. the USA is like
paradise compared to Armenia...
Sacred silence and sleep - With the lack of
jobs and the field going to the dogs,
have something to pass the time (like eating
sunflower seeds) is ideal. The silence
Run because no one is really,
genuinely happy; so the silence is
created. People have nothing better to do
to do than eat sunflower seeds and
sleep to pass the time.
Daydreams of lanterns trapped in headlights
a truck." He's talking about someone
fall asleep at the wheel of a car and get into
Traffic. The driver collides with a
truck because, in a dream, he saw the
truck headlights how can lsso
mean technology is numbing
our sense of reality (and that we are
constantly stuck in a state between
silence and sleep?), or it could just be a
example of the disorder that is happening
around us. are stuck in technology
instead of helping and helping people in Armenia
who suffered as a genocide. This talks about wealthy Armenians in America doing nothing for genocide-ravaged Armenia.
war.
In short, it's about your content.
poisonous. Your level of toxicity. But
toxicity does not necessarily mean the
toxicity of a person, can be the
city toxicity. Or the toxicity of
one nation. The toxicity of a speech. AND
just the general toxicity that's in the
involving in general.
Hope this helps
You're talking about "Toxicity" which this person also has a video reaction of. But this song is "Chop Suey." I'd encourage you to post what you wrote here on her reaction to "Toxicity" because I definitely learned stuff from what you posted here that I didn't know, thank you.
Korn - Freak on a leash
"I'm Not a Fan" is REALLY good!
Hello Jennifer, Great analysis as usual, I´m glad you are reacting to this heavy (punk) music. I would love for you to react to their song called Aerials and you would appreciate more Serj Tankian (System of a Down vocalist) voice. It´s my favorite song from their Toxicity album and more calmy song than Toxicity and Chop Suey
You should also check out the accoustic duet with his father doing an armenian song called Bari Arakeel ( eOkRCR40sqU ). Their harmonics are awesome.
My 3 SOAD recommendations:
- Sugar
- Spiders
- Lonely Day
I suggest "B.Y.O.B" next. A couple of my other favorite vocal coaching channels have done it recently and loved it.
You should listen to Question! by them. That song probably has the most beautiful and emotional harmonies by Serj and Damian and Serj vocals are crazy on that song
Please do SOAD - Question! it has crazy vocal harmonies and crazy vocals in general!
You should react to the orchestra version of Serj's single "Honking Antilope" and stand in awe of his magnificent voice.
👍👏gotta give Jinjer another look
So - as a musical theater performer i am sure you can truly appreciate Serj and his amazing vocal abilities.
My mother is a classically trained singing teacher, so getting her to appreciate things like this is a little more difficult. She certainly did not appreciate me playing stuff like this as a teenager 😅
But i do think bands like SOAD are exactly how to get people who care about vocal performance and dramatic/ theatrical performance into metal music.
Serj can combine classical lyrical vocals, harsh metal vocals and traditional Caucasian/Armenian folk vocal styles with ease.
He is probably joint equal with Slipknots Corey Taylor (though quite different) regarding the best 90s/'nu metal' vocalists.
I would still love to hear you do:
Citizen Queen's: XO (only the performance video, not the official music video) Purple couch set.
Metalica: No Leaf Clover - another good one if you get a guitar guy on with you.
Gotye - Somebody I used to know (the contrast between him and Kimbra)
You were right, I was very much tempted to just go watch the video instead. But I stuck with it and watched your reaction.
Amazing reaction, I think you’d like “aerials” another classic song from soad
"AUNTIE!" hahaha thank you for that laugh!
One of the best songs of all time.
Love your analysis. It's my 1st time here. Looking forward to more UA-cam recommendations from your channel 🙏
Maybe end with a summary of your analysis / final thoughts. As it stands, your outro is lackluster AF. Always remember: People subscribe to your channel because of "YOU"! Your POV is why we're here. Thrive on that!
Best wishes.. hope to see you soon. TC..
*SPIDERS* is an absolute must!
Certainly one of most intense songs out there!
you should definitely react and analyze more system of a down songs. BYOB, Aerials, Question!, and more. Very nice analysis btw. Despite having heard this song thousands of times, there were a couple of vocal details that I've never paid attention to until you pointed them out. The same goes with your react and analysis of toxicity. Keep it up!
Aerials definitely !!!
Aerials, boyb so many choices so many good songs
I highly recommend you analyze Rhapsody Of Fire - Dawn of Victory. the level of clarity and vocal intensity is a delight!! ❤️
Try the Questions
They have a great harmony..😎😎
Aerials is a must
Exelente react
I wait patiently for the day that Jennifer analyzes the vocals of Maynard James Keenan in TOOL. Possibly The Pot of Vicarious to start for clarity of the voice track.
If you do more System of a Down, Question and Aerials are amazing.
If you want your jaw dropped by both vocal and instrumental performance, check Dragonforce.
Songs I’d recommend are:
Fury of the Storm
Three Hammers
Cry Thunder
And all the rest basically
Spiders!!!!! Is beautiful and his voice is amazing!!
Uhhh that´s a very cool song. I was at the condert in Colonge that´s was ... i don´t .. it was so cool to bee there ( i will never forgot this Concert in my life) daren has a so much cool co voice XD
Please react yo more system's songs!! They're all good hehe:) Spiders and Innervision are maybe my favourites
Greatest Band ever ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
6:35 🤣🤣 I literally laughed out loud 🤣 You really need to analyze BYOB as soon as possible 😅. Love your work 🥰
Do motionless in white another life, such amazing vocals and vocal transitions
Love You
Def do aerials next!
I would love to see you go through some RUSH songs. They are well know for being top talents at each of their main instruments (Neil/Drums, Geddy/Bass, Alex/Guitar) but have been often maligned for Geddy's vocals (love or hate maybe?) Thanks for your fun content!
Can only thumbs up once, but yes please! Reactions to RUSH are criminally rare on YT. Tom Sawyer or Spirit of Radio would be the typical first choices. If you do react to them note that the drummer (Neil Peart , RIP) is called the professor and many consider him to be the greatest ever. There are so many time shifts and other rhythmic magic to react to in addition to your normal in depth vocal analysis.
@@zeldyrrolorin9962criminally rare?? Must be the algorithm that floods me with Rush reactions then 😊
Great R&A, would love another look at Colm McGuinness, maybe something newer like Northwest Passage 2023 or Northumbria
Serj Tankian has such a uniqe voice, well worth to follow the rabbit into his music
Because you're a vocal coach, I think it's interesting that you react to their songs like I.E.A.I.A.I.O., Question, F#ck the Sistem, Cigarro, Kill Rock'n Roll because they're songs that show other different things vocally.
And escape the more popular ones like BYOB, Aerials, Spiders, because although they are great songs, they are the ones that have less different things in terms of vocals.
To get a greater appreciation for Serj's vocals you should react to cellist Tina Guo - Moonhearts In Space. Serj does all the vocals on the song.
One song to check out is "Lonely Day." Darren, usually back up vocals, really gets to shine. And the song is just gorgeous and easier for us ladies to sing along with (the curse of being a high soprano and a metal fan!).
Take a look at Sergi's perform of Empty walls live with the Auckland orchestra!
The second vocal is Darren the guitar player...you should do lonely dsy
❤
Jennifer, i love u, please, react to Gabriel Henrique at American Got Talent
You should do their song "aerials". I think you will appreciate it
Te amo Jennifer😊 !!!
Jennifer! Hmm, System of a Down. Not my first choice in music but interesting. Might be worth a check of the lyrics on this one ... some interesting phrases. You heard what you thought was a piano and I thought so too. Particularly near the end at 13:56 ... what can that background melody be but a piano, though we don't see one on stage. I'm intrigued enough to be willing to listen to more of ... let's use the correct jargon ... SOAD. 😁 I'm sure you'll do more of their stuff. Great reaction and analysis as always Jen. 😊
the other guitarist adds in backing vocals which contribute to the harmonies, it’s not just serj’s voice layered over itself :)
Would love for you to analyze "Question" its a wild ride. Others have suggested it as well
As a next song I would recommend "Holy Mountains". It is just so powerful and dynamic with lots of build-up and anger, as it refers to the Armenian Genocide. I hope you do react to this one if you analyse another System Of A Down song.
♫ DIIEEEEEE! "Ha-ha" - excellent :)
Aerials is a must then....
i feel like you'd love their song 'question!' :)
PLEASE do Halocene’s cover of this!
Hi Jennifer!! 🙋♂️
How about reaction to Mr. Big song, such as voodoo kiss live MTV plugged
Eric Martin is one of golden voice of rock ever lived.
Have you heard of Dan Vasc (Metal Singer)? I would love to hear your analysis of his version of "Amazing Grace"
You definitely need to react to SOD lonely day, question, and spiders less popular of their songs but amazing
System of a Downs Spiders please! Their first album is their best imo and shows Serjs range waaaay more than any of their other albums. Not counting Serjs solo stuff.
I Love your smile ❤
If you want to check out more SOAD songs, try "Mesmerize " or B.Y.O.B
ARIALS in the sky
The metal stank face at 2:25 is me every time I hear this intro from the first to the thousandth time
the song called "questions!" by them is rly good for a bunch of different vocal techniques
10:00 i love it, you noticed that
serj’s voice like in the middle of desert. Yup, he’s armenian
Serj sounds like Animal from the muppets sometimes. During his growl notes. Makes me snicker when I hear it. 😂
