Brilliant analysis of such a powerful classic. I didn't realize quite how many layers of instruments they added to that final chorus, and literally had no idea of the crowd vocals in the second chorus. Such pure emotion put into this song.

Amazing. Thank you for pulling this track apart. I have noticed a few of the extra instruments before but wow I didn’t realise there were so many!!. Whilst I’m here, those vocal Melodie’s at the end are some of the best I’ve heard (in metal), they are absolute golden but no mention of them :(

I got Systems first album after hearing the song WAR and loved it , I remember in 2001 I heard a new song was going to be played on Triple J on 3 hours of Power ( the old Metal Show ) and of course it was Chop Suey, I will never forget hearing this for the first time, it truly blew my mind as did Toxicity when it came out a month or so later.
It's so cool hearing the seperate Vocal Tracks , the work the band and Rick Rubin put in to this masterpiece is incredible!

He was a great teacher when it came to music theory, how sound travels like the waves in the ocean, ect. Not very many people in this world born with your gift. Chop Suey is such a masterpiece. It will always be one of my favorite songs of all times. Hearing all the isolated tracks really drive this home for me. I love the complexities of Serj's voice, I love how sweet Daron's voice sounds, and I love the way they harmonize.
I have watched several videos of yours, and what really sets you apart, is your willingness to try and make whatever sounds you are hearing, without really caring how well they are, as you are more interested in learning it yourself, and trying to explain it to us.
Then I got to this video which sets you apart even more. I have never seen anyone break down the tracks before. There was so much going on underneath everything, and you showing it changed changed the whole sound, and game me a new appreciation for everything actually going on there. I'd definitely love to see more of these.
I love this idea of using the tracks to break down a song. Shout out to Dicodec and their YT channel who have been doing multitrack breakdowns of Avenged Sevenfold for a couple of months now.

@@mrcroob8563 It's been 5 months...but I think I meant like how she'd do harsh vocals, and such, even though she is not really trained, nor good at them. A lot of vocal coaches, will stick to what they know, and are good at...if they even try to sing at on in the videos. She gives it a try anyway, and makes it feel more genuine.

System of a Down was my top favorite band early on for me in high school. :) If it wasn't for them I don't know if I'd be half as open to new and awesome music as I am today!I graduated in 06, if there's any question to which albums I was listening to in school. :P

On our Classic rock station here in Calgary, they used to have a DJ that would play only the vocals of songs and you could hear some REALLY interesting things in it. Like people talking in the backgrounds and whatnot. Very cool.

I thank you for the attention you paid to the lines "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit" and "Father, why have you forsaken me?" which are indeed relevant as part of the Catholic identidy (I don't know how much these guys believe nowadays, but being of Armenian descent I'm sure these lines and their meaning were important during their upbringing).
As per proposed songs, have you already done Paranoid Android by Radiohead? It's been already two decades since my pals and I would listen to this song over and over and tried to replicate each of the voices we could hear from the middle, the "rain down on me" part (3:30ish). We counted up to 6... but I'm sure there are more!

That was a very interesting analysis of chop suey, never really thought about what was going on in the background for any SOAD song tbh lol just took it for what it was. I didn’t really pay much attention to layering in general until I watched an interview/reaction to the tesseract song ‘legion’ between Chris Liepe and the singer Dan Tompkins.
Dan mentioned during the interview that on the album version of his tracks he never held back on layering as it felt like each layer is like a brush stroke on the canvas of the song. Interest that both you and Dan made painting references regarding music. I highly recommend you have a look at that interview or listen to the song, Dan’s vocal performance is amazing.
Dan Tompkins and Tesseract deserve way more recognition, great band.

I really enjoyed your analysis and it gave me a greater appreciation of System of a Down. This seems like a unique approach that sets you apart from the other vocal analysis channels. As a fellow Australian I would love to see some love to Australian bands. I understand while you are starting the channel you need to go for more immediately attention-grabbing material. As far as multirack analysis, I don't know enough about music to make good recommendations, which is why I watch these kinds of channels as a kind of music appreciation class. General suggestions of things that would probably get a lot of hits are things like the Japanese band - Wagakki Band - Senbonzakura (和楽器バンド / 千本桜) (that is the film clip and more likely to get a copyright strike), the live version with Amy Lee is frequently analysed by a variety of musicians. Or the Indian band Bloodywood with Dana Dana would also be a good choice. If you want any Australian band recs - I have a whole list.
One potential idea: I listened to Silverchair a alot around 20 - 25 years ago. They were very young when they started making music and became popular. The front singer doesn't have have the most impressive voice and singing capabilities initially, but especially considering their age then, the music was really quite good and the musical development they made was very interesting to see and listen to. The first record (fromgstomp I think it was called) was still a bit simple and basic, but has a few really good tracks already. Next was "Freak Show" I think. Harder record, different sound as well, better production. And after that it got more interesting because they also started using orchestras or at least some more classical instruments like strings.
A few years later they stopped making music and the later albums I didn't like very much ... too much pop and somehow a bit strange. They departed a bit too much from their roots I guess (although the song writing of the late stuff wasn't bad either).

I was watching a different video of yours and went to your channel to find the most recent to tell you that you should react to System of a Down since Serj Tankian is classically trained in Opera.
The fact they didn't make the final chorus a predictable four chord one is the genius of it because that way it keeps the tension going all the way to the end of the song so clever and much more evoking to the listener even if they don't know it yet
Great breakdown of a great song. Really enjoyed that. The Mandolin/Bazouki style strings as in many of their songs hark to their Armenian roots
I always thought this song sounded very "thick" with a lot of depth to it - but somehow I was surprised to discover that it was actually made up of all these layers of sound. Individually I couldn't pick out any of the instruments beyond those we see them playing in the video, until we listen to them separately and reintegrate them back in. Fascinating!

The pealing of layers is possible everywhere where something is composed of several parts.
For example if you have notes, single voices and such, you can look at all of them separatly, but if you just had a recoding it wouldnt be as easy.
In paiting its the same, the finished painting is like a prerecorded audio file (without layers), but when we are talking about drawing in general, then you also can have separatly layers, especially if its made on computers or is computer assitant but also for example in cartoons (especially the old disney ones) where you also had several layers. Same for collages.
Even its mostly not considered art but this layer thing and the ability to analyse separaty things are very common in technial things like software development / programming.
The "father" undertones gave me chills and immediately invoked tears for some reason. Just wow.
Super enjoyed this Format. Would love you to dig into Sleep Token. A tune like The Summoning. Also Will Ramos one of the best metal vocalists is friends with an Opera Singer, Elizabeth from The Charismatic Voice on You Tube. Some good hints on screaming.
First time for me to watch a multitrack analysis. Very interesting. Even more so because it's one of the many kickass SOAD songs that I have listened so much to back in the day. I should listen to that kind of stuff more again. But then, with a wife and little kids ... currently the music in our house is quite different. But: I do encourage them to play the stage piano and the drums in the basement. It's fun! :-)
I also listen to songs by Biffy Clyro with them, which are more accessible than say SOAD or Tool or Metallica and such, sometimes dancing with both of them on my arms ... 5 and 2 years old, that's still barely doable for a 3 or 4 minute song, one of them for example would be "following master" ;-)
And I am sure the time for harder stuff will come once the boys are a bit older. And classical music is and will be on the menu as well.
