I love that movie, it s just great, a switch on the fairytale/princess trope and I love the ending. Cahterine O'Hara just great in it, she is great to play someone bad mom, she is just fabulous. Please, please review it!
I *love* how Avaryl made sense of the uncles and Casper not looking very much like themselves when they were alive. The theory that the longer you’re deceased/a ghost, the less you resemble your living self is pretty fucking brilliant. (Even though I highly doubt anyone involved in the film thought it through that far! Hahaha.)
After watching Capser meets Wendy as a kid, I used to believe I was a witch too and had an invisible ghost friend named Casper. What girl doesn't look back at her witch phase fondly.
I love Christina Ricci and JUST watched Gold Diggers. Her diction and the tone of her voice are so crisp and clear like she’s an eternally jaded 35, even when she’s 14.
Please please please tell me you'll review the Addams Family movies?!!?! I need you to discuss the magnificence that is Anjelica Huston, Christina Ricci and Joan Cusack.
Next years theme should be great campy horror movies that were poorly marketed and unfairly hated when they were released, mainly because I want to see your review of Jennifer's Body
I had this movie on VHS and watched it soooo many times! Christina Ricci and Thora Birch are my favorite young actors from the 90s and I remember being sooo happy they both were in Now and Then. I too wondered about the family relations- where did the uncles come from and when, and was Carrigan Casper’s sister or niece?
I love Christina Ricci! She has that same thing that chloe sevigny has. It’s weird cool girl vibe and I remember this, Addams family values and now and then made me want to be Christina Ricci. Also love Devon sawa!
As a long time fan, I have to say that I have never felt more in sync with Avaryl as I did watching this video. I've been obsessed with Christina Ricci since I was 5 years old and saw her as Wednesday Addams for the first time. Casper is one of my all-time favorite movies, so much so that I have a "Can I Keep You?" tattoo. Avaryl, I'm so happy to know there is another die hard Ricci fan out there and seeing you reference Now and Then and Gold Diggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain made my whole day! I am so happy that you guys chose to do this!
I remember going to the cinema to see that film. I feel like the nineties had a few gems like this, ie kids movies that combined spooky elements, celebrated odd kids without being too obvious about what set them apart from other children, were both entertaining and clever. The atmosphere and tone in Casper are brilliantly constructed and suck you in within minutes of film.
I couldn’t adore this episode more 😍 Casper was my favorite movie as a child and I insisted on watching it over and over and over again. I went through more than one Casper VHS. It was such a struggle for my poor mother to explain to me that I wouldn’t be able to watch it around some other children because it scared them. I couldn’t accept that. 😅
26:10 ‘Hellmouth’...thank you for that one word BuffyTHeVampireSlayer reference 🖤 felt even more of a halloween ep now 🧛🏼♂️🧟♂️ I loved this retroreview! I’ve seen this movie too many times, wont get tired of it.
This was my go to Halloween moving growing up. Also another movie with young Christina Ricci and Devon Sawa (with a bonus young Thora Birch) that was my go to movie growing up "Now and Then".
Bill Pullman in this movie was perhaps the start of my sexual awakening and Christina Ricci in this movie was perhaps the start of my BIsexual awakening
PLEASE!!! review Wild America! It has animals, its so campy and there 3 hot brothers and they live with their mother who is fabulous and she's filled their house with rescued wildlife she's nursing back to health! Its amazing and my childhood and I feel like Andrew would enjoy it!

Mid-review I was like : wait, have I seen the same movie that they talked about? and then it hit me. THE ONE I SAW IS THE SEQUEL WITH HILARY DUFF OMG (I don't know if this one holds up but I remember LOVING it)
I was about to comment how weirdly importand this movie was to me and how i adored christina Ricci, but Avaryl took the words out of my mouth. Also I'd like to add 'Now and Then'.
Again I find myself totally sharing in Avaryl's childhood references. I loved all those Christina Ricci movies, and I definitely had a thumb ring. Please retro review Now and Then!!!! (...and Gold Diggers: The Secret of Bear Mountain, but if you have to choose, Now and Then is just iconic!)
I have and will always love Christina Ricci. This movie was so big for me that my mom just bought it for me because I’d rented it from Blockbuster so much. Which is a sentence that could only be said about a certain period in time!
Loved this episode guys! I had Casper on video so I watched it constantly as a kid. There was so much you didn't even touch on like the subplot with Kat liking the boy in school, the cute father-daughter scene with Christina Ricci and Bill Pullman in the car on the way to Maine, the bit when Fatso gets into drag pretending to be Bill Pullman's wife... sure the episode would've been like two hours long but I wouldn't have been mad about it
@@MovieBitches ahh that's too bad. I wasn't complaining I can just never get tired of watching you two! I need like a 24 hour moviebitches streaming service or something 😅
This made me realize that since Bill Pullman gets recorporealized off his ghost self, there's still just an extra Bill Pullman dead body lying in a sewer outside the karaoke bar.
Devon Sawa tweeted (and thanked) Christina Ricci recently for playing a huge role in him getting the role of Casper and then recommending him for Now & Then.
Still one of my favorite movies, and so happy my daughter (7) likes to watch it with me 😊 BTW, I had the biggest crush on Devon Sawa, when he turns and can finally see his face: Wow! That exactly is what I was hoping for in the Beauty and the Beast live action film, when Beast turns around, but instead: meh! 😒
"Andrew, what are you talking about?! Ghosts can get married just as much as everyone else!" #loveislove KILLED ME AND GAVE ME LIFE JUST LIKE THE LAZARUS MACHINE
Oh how I love this movie. I really love how the Ghostly Trio, assholes that they were, still kept their word and gave the dad the visit from his wife he needed to finally get closure.
Holy crap, some of the scene clips was such a strong nostalgia trip it was like momentarily being a 9 year old again. Also TOTALLY here for a Wild America retro review. For some reason, my family to this day still quotes "Devonshire cream. The creamiest cream" to each other.
I so want to just visit that house. I know it's just some sets, and nowadays would be tacky-tack-tack, but I just want to wander through and explore it.
You guys have me missing the days of laying down on my bed, reading The Babysitter's Club or Sweet Valley High talking to my best friends on my Swatch phone lol❤️
Cathy Moriarty was also one of Wendy’s fabulous witch aunts in Casper Meets Wendy and was the reason I watched that movie a million times as a kid (along with Teri Garr, Shelly DuVall, and Hillary Duff of course)
yep. christina ricci and JLH (jennifer love hewitt) were super influential and important to me growing up. all the shows and movies were watched a MILLION times. how could you forget mermaids???????? thats my first christina ricci moment. then addams family on up to pan air
The line I always forgot is in this movie is "Can I keep you?" I watched it a week ago and physically cringed when he said that, I was like no Caspar! Consent! Thank you guys so much for this review! You guys are the best!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Now I kind of want yall to review Cursed with Christina Ricci cuz I find that movie a hilarious disaster. I mean for the fact that a werewolf comes out of hiding to give the finger because she was being read to filth is a reason alone
surprised you didn't mention James Horner's fun score for this one! Casper's theme sends me right back to the 90s, and he contributed so much to my childhood viewing (and listening) from Jumanji and Mighty Joe Young to Honey I Shrunk the Kids and more!
Fun but useless fact: the voice of Casper is by the actor who played Brian Kagan in Full House (DJ babysat him) P.s. sorry/not sorry for all of the recent comments. I’m binging and stanning your reviews
I had so many feelings about this review. I first saw it when I was in middle school and I definitely connected with a lot of the 90’s kids vibes it gave off. 1) I was about ready to slap Andrew for not knowing Eric Idle, but thankfully he pulled through in the end 2) Andrew *definitely* needs to watch Animaniacs. It is a cornerstone of my sense of humor. And as I’ve gotten older I’ve only related to Slappy Squirrel more and more. I’m loving the choices for this Shocktober so far! Keep it up!
I'll have Andrew know that I grew up on Capri Sun as a kid of the 80s! Actually there is a lot that Millennials say are 90s specific things that are 80s things too.
Although I haven't yet seen this movie, I grew up when the "Casper" cartoon was a literal fixture on TV. I can still vividly remember all the lyrics to the theme song 🎵, and actually had a somewhat huge white terrycloth-covered talking doll. You just pulled the string sticking out of his back, and the cartoon voice uttered 10 different things. White terrycloth gets really filthy really easily, but because of the hard plastic talking mechanism, it could not be washed. So "Casper" sort of became an Hispanic ghost...
Fun fact: Ben Stein makes a cameo in all 3 Casper movies of the 90s. This one, A Spirited Beginning (the prequel) and Casper Meets Wendy (the sequel to Spirited Beginning). So technically, the first Casper is the last one if you watch them that way
31:37-32:03: can we please please please have an outtake/bloopers episode one day - for christmas maybe or new years idk i just know we neeeeed this :)
*so* here for a 101 Dalmatians retro review. the fashion in that movie really threw my child brain for a loop, and I distinctly remember it being the first movie I came out of liking the villain but being super conflicted about it because I was 5 and loved dogs p:
Besides her rings and sweaters; her hair was awesome too. This movie was the catalyst for puberty for me. When Casper became a boy again I recall the butterflies. Between Casper, Now and Then and LITTLE GIANTS....Devon Sawaah ruined every 11 year old boy for me.
There is a Christina Ricci and James McAvoy movie called "Penelope" that I loved as a kid and it still holds up.
MarQuel Woods is that the “nose” one-
Iain 97 Yeah, she had a pig nose.🐽
Lol I just watched it the other day!
Great movie!
I love that movie, it s just great, a switch on the fairytale/princess trope and I love the ending. Cahterine O'Hara just great in it, she is great to play someone bad mom, she is just fabulous. Please, please review it!

the moviebitches are everything!!!! Things will get better boo

Avaryl's ptsd flashback of beauty and the beast cgi is a mood
I love Christina Ricci and JUST watched Gold Diggers. Her diction and the tone of her voice are so crisp and clear like she’s an eternally jaded 35, even when she’s 14.
Backstreet’s back was filmed in that house.
Alright

yes yes pls!
And Christine Baranski!
Yaaas! My family and I quote Addams Family Values still!
I was a BALLERINA. GRACEFUL. DELICATE.
Oooooh, do they have a present for you
Christina Ricci has always been a great actress so underrated!
The ending of Casper always makes me cry. I last watched it before my Dad died; and now I’m not sure if I can watch it again without bawling.
tears of 90s joy are pouring down my face!

May be Casper had an unfinished business of growing up. Loved this movie as a child, so glad you did a marvelous review of it.
Now and Then RetroReview?
Also, I, too, love procedurals.
Growing up gay, is thinking you wanted to be Casper, but you actually wanted to be Christina Ricci the whole time.
Growing up a lesbian is thinking you wanted to be Christina Ricci, but you actually wanted to be Casper. Solidarity.
And ofc, growing up bi is wanting to kiss both Christina Ricci and Devon Sawa.

Ha! I mean, I also really enjoyed the Elvira review, but people DID pick wrong. I applaud your excellent executive decision-making
Andrew _needs_ to watch Animaniacs. Even if he’d probably miss half of the jokes. Tie him to a chair and educate him!

I'm usually nostalgic for these retro reviews but this one brought me BACK MAN. I didn't realize I remembered so much of this movie.
"Who Framed Roger Rabbit" - 1988 - used tennis balls on sticks so the actors had something to focus upon for "eye contact" also
