Me too! I think he's really entertaining playing against type and probably had a blast with Meryl and Goldie. He does his best to reflect their manic energy without trying to steal scenes.
(Two years later, I'm finding this review...) I think that Bruce Mr.ActionStar Willis is the stunningly, out-of-the-blue perfect choice, and his performance is so unlike anything else. SIXTH SENSE gave us his dramatic no-need-for-action chops, but this performance remains my favorite. I wonder how he rates this among his career?
I agree, i just saw it, and i think its genius. A lot to think over, especially the symbolism. Ps, sorry to reply a year after, but just found the video googling stuff.
"and I can see right throoouuughhh yoooooouuuuuuuu !" Ahhhhhhhhhh this is up there with serial mom in my favorites collection, casting was spot on and I never get tired of it !!
You know those moments that something happens that you could never imagine happening because it is too ridiculously amazing. Well.. This is one of those moments.
I’ve watched this 3 times on patreon already. And here I am watching it again on UA-cam today. I haven’t been this happy in a while. This retro review had me cackling.
16:30 i always thought the twitchy eye was because he had some sort of accident after the potion. Remember the warning to take care if you're body, you'll be with it a long time
I want this channel to be front page. I swear you guys make me laugh so hard I pee a little (part of that is due to the funny, but I've also had two boys who were over 10lbs at birth so, the bladder ain't what she used to be lol)
More than 30 scenes were deleted actually... 29:50 there was another scene on the stairs (3 deleted scenes totally actually)... Ernest puts Madeline in the freezer after they arrive back from the hospital. Then he goes out to get appliances, after that he goes to visit Helen at the Beverly Hills hotel. Helen runs her car into a bagage cart arriving at the Beverly Hills hotel and a valet jumps out of the way. Helen and Ernest argue about what to do with the body. Helen thinks Ernest has totally lost his mind and throws a glass of water in his face. In the morning the maid Rose finds Madeline in the freezer, Ernest takes her out, makes up some bs story about it being a beauty treatment, fires Rose and he starts pulling Mad up the stairs. She complains about being sweaty (she's defrosting), she's stiff (it's rigor mortis, walk it off) and is sad she was so pretty but Ernest promises to make her his masterpiece. It's a crime these scenes were removed... they're hilarious. The whole ending was changed too... for the better... but still would love to see it. It took place in Switzerland
I just paused a documentary regarding whether or not William Shakespeare ever Wrote his famous works; for this review. I have been waiting so long for this day. I love you guys.
omg yaaaaaas. I love this movie so much. I named a character in World of Warcraft Helen Sharp that was undead. So stoked to watch this during my vacation!
$5 meryl told Don "COULD YOU JUST NOT BREATHE?" on the way to that Golden Globes where she got the Lifetime Achievement award and just didnt touch him when he stood up next to her...
I was having a terrible morning (I had to reschedule 2 of my appts, because I was called into work even though I asked for today off, because of said appts) so this review was well needed. In the immortal words of Tatianna, thank you!
My siblings and I rented this from Blockbuster one Halloween (just based on the cover) and have watched it every year since. We all still quote this movie to this day! Happy Halloween and thank you for this fabulous review!!
I thought the same damn thing when I watched this movie. Dose his hand stay the same after all these years? One good hand in the coffin when he's dead? Did his mortician do, say or think anything when he saw it? So many questions!
Something that just occurred to me all these years later with the Elivis "cameo" if he took the potion then why did he still look like older, overweight Elvis, wouldn't it have turned him back into younger, sexy, slimmer, 50's hearthrob/66 comeback Elvis?
The Michael Caine footage is from The Ipcress File. Meryl is being added to footage from that film for the made up Madeleine Ashton film in the movie (Meryl's footage is film specifically for Death Become Her).
Oh wow, so it is a real movie with Meryl added. I thought it was just a fake movie they invented for this movie. Did they need to ask for permission or go through any problems while using that movie with Meryl added?
YAAS, loved this review! PS: I've always wondered what "fat" Helen was eating in front of her tv too - but finally noticed what during this review! In the clip you show where the Madeline movie is playing on tv, there is an empty tub of whatever she was eating on top of the tv - Betty Crocker Creamy Deluxe frosting. Mystery solved.
What about this: A reboot with Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron. Directed by Tim Burton with Johnny Depp in Bruce's role. ooh, and Iman in Isabella's role.
You sorta answered your own question with the zoom on tv, with a cake frosting empty container on top. But originally I thought it was some sort of marshmallow spread.
I think it was tubs of ice cream.A couple on top of the tv during the Meryl getting choked scene looks like it. Could be wrong though (this is an unimportant comment)
When Helen is the cat lady, while she's watching the TV, there is a can of frosting (Betty Crocker) on the TV with some videotapes. So yeah, she was eating frosting.
I always recognize the voice of the woman in the opening scene, criticizing Madeline's Songbird, as the mother of Dharma, in Dharma and Greg, as well as the show Mom now.
This is one of my all time campy favorites, along with The Witches, Monster Squad, and She-Devil (which is probably garbage but I still like it). Hopefully, you'll RetroReview all of them someday too. :)
I always wanted to rent it on blockbuster but I was such a scaredy-cat I never did. Finally watched it a few weeks ago and boy was it not what I thought.
This movie has always been my favorite. It was my gay awakening movie where I realized I was watching something fabulous. This movie was so much extra, I loved it.
Imagine how extra the film was if they had kept Madeline and Dakota's sex scene in, Helen and Ernest argueing in the Beverly Hills hotel, Madeline walking around all frozen pretending to be alive to maid Rose, Lisle admitting she killed Shakespeare, Max Factor and Lincoln after they refused to take the potion and many others. So sad they had to cut it down so much. Then we have all the subplot scenes that all went bye bye too.
32:50 The floating nuns are there because when Ernest goes into the morgue there originally was a worker there working on a dead priest but they deleted it. The door of the priest's slab doesn't get shut correctly so when Ernest is talking to Madeline the slab comes rolling out slowly, Ernest's speech is a bit longer and before Ernest says "It's a miracle!" he bumps into the slab with his ass.
Love that you did a Retro for this film, it's been a favourite of mine since I was a kid. I have it on DVD yet, still find myself watching it whenever I find it on TV.
I would guess the Michael Caine scene is from one of the Harry Palmer movies where he plays a James Bond-type character, Ipcress File is the first one, there are a few others. The glasses, clothing and shot from below seem distinctive.
One of my Top 5 Faves. If I am ever lucky to meet either Goldie or Meryl someday, I want to be regaled with stories about how much fun they had while filming this, because it's obvious that they did!
14:40 Bruce's hand was shaking because he was in such a bad state health wise. There was a scene cut from the film with Madeline and Ernest getting ready for the bookparty and Mad starts to complain about his appearance. We see he has all pieces of toiletpaper on his face cause he can't shave neatly with his left hand anymore. Another fantastic scene we never got to see. Ernest's hand played a part in the original ending as well. When he and his wife are old, picnicing in the park he covers his wife's old hand with his still young hand.
I friggin love this movie so much!! I watched it with my 16 year old brother and he laughed so much and loved it. This review is everything; love you guys 💕
Just finished Mixed Nuts review... AMAZE-BWALLS laughed so much I cried. Then I see another one of my ultimate favs I have every line memorized of... DEATH BECOMES HER!!! I will save this one for later! 😉 but let it be known this will be my 3rd episode of yours to watch. Haha “Big Business” with Lilly Tomlin and Bette Midler and sexy “Roooooone Dimmick”?!!! Have you two already done that one, cause it’s RIGHT up there with Wong-Nuts-Becomes Her!
It’s frosting (that Goldie is eating) if you look on top of the tv when she rewinds the movie over and over you see a clearer picture of the label and it has a Duncan Hines (I think that’s the brand) red spoon on it
Jesus H Christ do I *love* this everything about this fucking movie. Even though it’s truly impossible for me to pick one all-time favorite film, anytime someone asks me, this is the one I name. Also, y’all are *so* right when you talk about how incredible Meryl’s line deliveries are throughout this movie. I’m not one to quote movies very often, but it’s impossible for me not to mimic 90% of her iconic lines from this phenomenal movie!
I think I'm gonna take a page from Isabella's book and wear a large necklace as a shirt.
No lie, I feel like this is my personal favorite Bruce Willis performance.
Me too! I think he's really entertaining playing against type and probably had a blast with Meryl and Goldie. He does his best to reflect their manic energy without trying to steal scenes.
Yeah, his acting in this is so different and theatrical. It's like Rick Moranis meets Gene Wilder, he was so good.
I agree it was definitely outside the box for him
I LOVE THIS MOVIE. Random fact, Isabella Rossellini lives in my hometown, so I would see her all the time. She's super nice and very poised.
I'm kind bummed that Practical Magic didn't get a review in its 20th years anniversary but I can't get mad that Death Becomes Her is the reason why.
20 years? dang im old. i was 14 when i saw that? i thought i was 20 something lol
@@serenityq26 It's so fabulous that it become ageless, so I get the confussion.
@@serenityq26 Stop saying you're old! We haven't even hit middle age yet!
You PUSHED me down the stairs, Ernest.
*This* is a retro review
*These* are the moments which make life worth living !!!
One of the best movies of all time

Straight up did a double take when I saw the thumbnail! 😍 YAAAAAS! Just what my Halloween was missing. Happy Halloween from Shanghai!
Big love and hugs to John Sullivan for requesting this classic, and of course big love to you two for doing such a great job retro reviewing it.
32:30 She'll be furious! Channeling Gene Wilder.
I’ve watched this 3 times on patreon already. And here I am watching it again on UA-cam today. I haven’t been this happy in a while. This retro review had me cackling.
16:30 i always thought the twitchy eye was because he had some sort of accident after the potion. Remember the warning to take care if you're body, you'll be with it a long time
honestly if I were to write a movie I would hire you two as consultants so you could actually fix the movie before its made

If you enjoy campy "historical" melodrama, the movie Anonymous takes place in a world in which Shakespeare is a fraud.
@@thesimline yes yes thank you! I'm already convinced Shakespeare was a pseudonym I'm def looking into that. Thank you
@@thesimline this is gonna be great since it is revolving around my favorite theory the Prince Tudoe theory yay
THANK YOU AGAIN lol I watched it & Loved it.
This channel needs a "That's So Camp" movie review playlist/series. Death Becomes Her, Clue, Hocus Pocus, etc.
I would be interested to see them review Carry on Screaming as a similar old campy movie.
OMG! Never clicked on anything so fast as this when I got the notification! I HAVE A HOOOOLLLEE IN MY STOMACH!
THE NOTIFICATION ITSELF MADE MY DAY ENTIRELY. THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH. 🌷🌷💖💖💕💕
I still can't believe they completely edited Tracy Ullman out of the film. Hopefully one day we'll get to see the deleted scenes.
omg yaaaaaas. I love this movie so much. I named a character in World of Warcraft Helen Sharp that was undead. So stoked to watch this during my vacation!
The wiki page says Helen was eating melted ice cream.
Didn't jinkx monsoon do a stage version? I remember watching it on here.
She did! With Dela and Peaches Christ

Cinema Nostradamus(Avaryl) strikes again. We got that Death Becomes Her musical.
23:55 I had to take a break over the snail bit. XD
ANSWER: Mr. Chagall is also dead. His body is falling apart.
One bit of trivia...one of the Tom, Dick and Harry group was also "Nitro" in the original version of American Gladiators.

I was the 799th person to like this video which is also the number of times Meryl Streep has been nominated for an Oscar
I've been waiting for this episode for so long, this was literally more highly anticipated than AS3 for me, I'm deadddd
The second Avaryl said the "uh uh" from Chicago without SKIPPING A BEAT is the second I realized I would forever be hopelessly in love with her.
