Sleepaway Camp helped change my life a little bit. I first saw it when I was 15. I always loved horror films and I would try to find ones I never saw. So I rented Sleepaway Camp and as a bullied kid in school, I loved the story line. I loved how it was like Carrie mixed with Friday the 13th. Anyway fast forward to me being 24 I got cast in a dinner theater show. My director Deborah makes this Sleepaway Camp reference and I lit up. I was also the only cast member who saw the movie. I told her that I loved the movie. She then tells me she's best friends with Felissa Rose and that they did New York Dinner Theater together in the early 90s. A few weeks later Deborah is on the phone then hands it to me. Felissa was on the line. I was star struck. I never thought at 15 whn I first saw the movie that I'd end up talking to Angela from Sleepaway Camp. Anyway we hit it off. That phone call was 2010 and we've been friends since. She did a movie in Fort Lauderdale in 2018. She put me as a Production Assistant and then I was a reporter in the film. Then she did Spooky Empire convention recently and did a reunion with Karen Fields and Katherine Kamhi. Felissa got me in the VIP party. That was the very first VIP party I ever went to at a convention. It was very fun and surreal to end partying with Angela, Judy, and Meg from Sleepaway Camp. Lol!
But couldn't be bothered to respect the writer /director to look up his name...talk forever about his work, but don't know who he is. How are you not embarrassed by your lack of caring nor sharing of where things come from, you love so much??? He made the movie just for you, you know, he never intended for anyone but you to care. He's your secret godmovie-fairy, no need to care about him, it's all about you.😇
This is my favorite review of yours. Not just because it made me discover this movie (thank you), but I can see how excited Avaryl is to talk at length about this gem. I come back to watch this every few months. ''We have to talk about this though...remember when it was just a raspberry?'' - Best line
This video changed my life for the better, thank you so much for your service.I have spent the last 5 years making my friends watch sleepaway camp and i always downplay it so they never expect the twist
I absolutely love how the filmmakers, as you guys pointed out, were like “We don’t want anyone we kill off to be even remotely likable!” Which is a pretty great idea as it makes the gruesome deaths that much more enjoyable. Haha. I also love how they didn’t hold shit back when they were trying to make you hate the characters. Like, “Man, we gotta kill this guy off pretty quickly. How’re we gonna make everyone absolutely despise him immediately? Let’s not only make him a pedophile, let’s have him be loud and proud about it!! He’ll call the kids ‘baldies’! Perfect!” Hahaha. ALSO, “Eat shit and live, Bill!” truly is an INCREDIBLE line!! LOL. Oh, and I’m not sure how/why I saw so much of this film when I was younger; but I had the biggest crush EVER on Ricky. What a lil’ heartthrob he was!!
Boii Jaiii Yeah, I like how they brought up Showgirls cause this is definitely the horror movie equivalent to that. Like, ShowGirls has "Man everybody got AIDS and shit!" This movie has "Eat shit and live, Bill."
Fun facts: Karen Fields, the actress who played Judy, was roughly 38 at the time of filming. Don't think she had to worry about the "older boys". lol Jonathon Tiersten who at 17 played 14 year old Ricky GOT this role because of his awesome ability to cuss - in his audition he was asked to cuss the guy out - and he also sings - ua-cam.com/users/tentiers Christopher Collet who played Paul was later in Prayer of the Roller Boys with Corey Haim and Stephen King's The Langoliers with REAL Dean Stockwell instead of #NotDeanStockwell Mike Kellin who played Mel or #NotDeanStockwell had actually been in quite a few movies, and this was his last role before he died that year. He was actually involved in a prisoners' rights group called Fortune Society that helped former prisoners get jobs and homes. Felissa Rose, Angela herself, had no idea what was going on in the movie when it was being filmed. It wasn't till later that she watched it and found out. In the documentary, she's like, "I was the chick with a dick!" For slasher fans, she's also in Victor Crowley (Hatchet series) and will be in Terrifier 2. Apparently, they HAD storyboards for the film but they were behind schedule so they threw them out. lol Which explains a lot. According to the site returntosleepawaycamp.com, the lyrics to the song at the end, "You're Just What I've Been Looking For" do seem to hint that Paul is gay as well. "I know it's all a masquerade/I know you're not afraid" "Time will mend your broken heart/Just don't fall apart/The truth will hold inside/Angie, I don't wanna let you go/I don't wanna let them know/The pain you have to hide" "You're just what I've been looking for/No other boy can love you more"
So I heard this in a video by GoodBadFlicks and apparently in order to cast ricky all they made the kids do was start cursing. When it came to casting Angella they made them stare blankly while eating a candy bar. Isn't that brilliant. Thanks for introducing me to this wonderfully bizzarre trainwreck masterpiece of a movie.
I was confused for the whole movie because the little boy was clearly the survivor of the boat crash... but I decided that must of been an editing error... but it wasn't... or was it???
@@ben8147 Ha! Yes. When you watch the boat accident, the dad and the girl are together in the water, and the boy in a few feet away. I thought that was a continuity error... until the reveal. XD
You actually SEE the little boy swimming AFTER the accident. You see him as the overacting water skier is freaking out. They should’ve cut that shot out.
The fact that Aunt Martha did the physical , ( Presumably . ) is clue to the film's resolution !! She did not want another Doctor to find out the truth about Angela !!
So excited to stumble on this review, as I just started watching and had to pause to share my glee. Originally I saw this movie at a slumber party about a year after it came out (so I was about 11 or so). We'd rented it -- as one does for a slumber party -- hoping to get scared but not knowing anything about it. And the most I can remember about it from then is how the other girls at the party (who were not always super-nice to me), exclaimed 'That's Nicole!' (me) at the end, because I was a girl that was often mistaken for a boy. I was so mortified and traumatized by the weeks of teasing that went on around that for me at school that I think I just sort of buried the film in my memory. And then, fast forward to about two years ago, and for whatever reason, I decided to watch it again AND -- SURPRISE! -- I KINDA LOVED IT. I mean, in a very campy, WTF way that totally went over my head as a kid -- because while it certainly has issues, it's very interesting and wonderfully bizarre. And I think that a lot of reviewers don't quite know how to take it and maybe take it a bit too seriously because of that, when IMO you've really just got to watch it as a cult camp classic instead. So, yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to watching your take instead.
19:10 - 19:58 .... I have used gigantic cooking pots like that in various restaurants/kitchens I've worked in. What's more is, I've also seem larger industrial cook ware that was on hydraulic lifts (LoL! I'm serious here!) You fill it with a hose, you stir it with utensils made specifically for this. One utensil I remember looked like an oar, like a canoe/boat/kayak/raft oar. Any kitchen job I've had where feeding & cooking for many people at once was the situation, big cookware was the norm. It sucks to handle. I hated those jobs & am glad I don't work then anymore! 💀
This is the only thing getting me through this tedious Halloween work day. You guys are the best! This is totally on par with the HDTGM episode which is my favorite of theirs.
I first saw Sleepaway Camp on VHS in the 80's and I thought it weird and funny and just awesome. It is a sort of masterpiece, it extends the boundaries of the low-budget slasher genre, while staying true to the camp and cheesiness that made it so much fun. I love your movie reviews, you guys are great!
You guys NAILED it! I watched it earlier this week for the first time since I was 11 and was fucking blown away. Of course, I remembered the ending...but ALL the greatness slipped by me as a kid. I've rewatched 5 times since and have gone down a Sleepaway Camp rabbit hole. Far and away, you two put the others to shame, you're ALL over it! Everything you said had been running through my head all week. Thanks So much!!! I'm now a huge new fan of yours!
I am 110% on board with Avaryl, this is my FAVORITE horror movie and one of my favorite movies/franchises period. And she is SO RIGHT about all the nuances!!
I so wish I hadn't known about Angela being a boy before watching but a stupid video about weird films ruined it for me. Still a fucking classic though

When I was like eight my cousin used to babysit us and would do our hair while we watched amazingly horrible "R" rated horror movies. This one was my favorite! I agree with Andrew though, I always assumed Paul was gay and that was a clue about Angela. I now kind of want to see the David Lynch movie that Aunt Martha is in because it must be fabulously bizarre. You guys are awesome! Thank you for sharing your awesomeness with us!

I think the backlit shot of Ricky in the wig wasn't visible in the original film presentation. It is only visible once the movie was remastered. I think that's also why the cop's fake mustache looked especially horrible as well. You could get away with it then, but not with modern advancements. But, I could be wrong.
I love when Avaryl is happy and passionate about something ! I never knew this movie existed in France, now I need to watch it. Also she is still the amazing impersonator ever. And Andrew complements it so well with his intellect (as well as his legs for days.). This is amazing.

I literally paused at the beginning, watched it and came back when you said "ok so you came back and watched it" and I thought "huh that's funny" and then I looked around and realized my only reward would be to scream this into the void.
I have a wonderful tradition for introducing friends to this movie. After we watch it, we open a bottle of wine and watch this review. My latest friend was wheezing and curling up laughing from your commentary on the gigantic pot of corn. She was very distracted by that in the movie, too. Lol
I really recommend you guys check out, sleepaway camp:on the waterfront after the social, if you haven't checked it out. It is a good behind the scenes look at the movie with the cast and crew. You find out so much, like for example, Ricky and Angela had a little puppy love romance off screen.
y'all slept on the best line in the movie:

I'm getting my masters in social work and I'm doing a paper and presentation on what therapeutic interventions I would use on Angela so thanks for inspiring this!
Love that!!
Ooh, I am intrigued! What would some of your suggestions be?
I was not ready for that ending.... LOL
If u want to see another amazing horror movie from the ‘70’s, watch “Black Christmas”
yesss
Love your videos been subbed since 5k
Do you think you could release some of your reviews as podcasts, so we can listen to them on the go a little better, keep up the good work love you guys!!!
Avaryl referring to batch "...it's aggressive and there's children." #Hilarious
7:49 lol Princeton doesn't even have a medical school so... yes?
Andrew was kind of sad today... IT'S GOING TO BE OK, ANDREW!!!
I literally paused at the beginning, watched it and came back when you said "ok so you came back and watched it" and I thought "huh that's funny" and then I looked around and realized my only reward would be to scream this into the void.
Shit am i the only one who thought the movie was truly disturbing!
The 80s quality, eerie music, and cringey deaths make the movie scary as fuck!
You find out so much, like for example, Ricky and Angela had a little puppy love romance off screen.
this is easily my favorite review i come back to it like once a month
I'm making 25:45 my new desktop.
I'm glad to see Andrew being the hairy dickpig we knew he was (armpit hair & a WIDE happy trail are my kinks!)
