I just Love my Weber Q, since 2005
I inherited my dads 15 yr old Q300 Weber which is in great shape apart from the paint peeling off the lid in places. I removed the lid and put a polishing disc on my 4 inch grinder and sanded away all the flaky paint and feathered back the edges. Then I used 100 grit paper with a sanding block and sanded the whole lid. I then switched to 180 grit and sanded the whole lid again.
I then used a degreaser spray and cleaned the lid inside with a scourer pad and did the top then washed it off with the hose and put it to dry in the sun.
I used Rustoleum heat proof black to spray the whole lid in several light coats. I used the whole can to spray the underside edges and top. Next day I refitted the lid to the bbq and lit it and raised the temperature to 250F for 30 mins following Rustoleum instructions to cure it. Once it was cold repeated the same thing at 400F then 600F to fully cure and harden the paint.
The black colour is now a grey which actually suits it and matches the shield colour around the gas cylinder. My dad always had it covered so the plastic frame and trolley when sprayed with automotive vinyl cleaner still look like new! 🤗
After watch a couple of your videos, I’m starting to have a new love for my Q22. I’ll be restoring mine soon.
Go for it!
They look amazing. I love it. I just purchased my first Weber Q. Preowned needs a bit cleaning.Really thinking about painting it now.
Yes, they look pretty sweet painted. Cheers!
They look so good 👌
Thanks man. These were fun to paint.
Thank you for re-visiting this topic from your previous video. I remembered you had paint issues with that orange color.
Yes, I've had issues with the burnt orange. The silver seems to be holding up fine. Cheers!
My Q is a bit too new for this treatment but good to have this info to use at some point in the future. Great vid as always. Keep on grillin' !
Thanks Paul! Keep on grillin'
Himmm what a dummy I am . I didn’t realise you could paint em. I like your channel just a couple of ordinary guys getting things done,so I’ve subscribed here in New Zealand
Welcome New Zealand! I have close to 100 Weber Q videos you may find interesting. I’ve also started branching out to new areas the past few years.
Sean is a moderator of the Facebook Weber Q group. If you have any Q questions, you can find answers and ideas there. Cheers and welcome!
I had great results painting mine. I actually shoved my 2200 lid in the dishwasher several times on the hottest setting (yes it did fit). Then I sprayed it many times inside and out with a very caustic oven cleaner - removes the surface of the paint a bit, makes it very dull. I just ran mine on a medium heat with the lid propped open at the start, so the edges didn't stick, for about an hour to cure it. I repainted it about 4 months ago and it's stuck really well. I did mine satin black. Great video, I'm glad I had a crack at painting mine!
Great! Glad you had success with yours. The burnt orange paint for me has been nothing but trouble. The silver seems to be holding up well though.
Nice work!
Thank you. Cheers Andi!
Hey team, I really appreciate this video, my 10 year old family q is looking a bit tired, I'm definitely going to look into respraying it!
Go for it! Would love to hear about the color you choose.
they look great !
Thanks CJ. Cheers man!
RAIDER NATION BABY!!!! Inspired me to do the same great work! 👍
Cleaning ...any time youbwant to paint you MUST scrupulously clean, degreaser before you sand, wax and grease remover immediatly before painting.
Great tip!
Very informative. The steps were simple, even for the worst lid. Paint type and sanding grits helpful. Checking the rough areas with fingertips saves having to re do the job. And giving the paint coats time to flash off before recoating was good advice. A good presentation. Had my attention all the way.
I have a bit of paint peeling on my Family Q. Was thinking taking to it with a wire brush on a grinder to take it back to bare metal and sand as needed. Thoughts on stripping all the paint off?
I really liked the yellow color. I was hoping you might try the two color on yours we talked about when you first painted it. Nevertheless they all looked great. Have a great day 🌤 .
Thanks as always Victor. Great hearing from you and looking forward to watching your channel. Cheers!
@@GallaghersGrub I swear to you I'm not making this up. Today I was planning on doing some filming. Apparently I have misplaced my gopro. I mean like my entire carry box, everything. I'll find it eventually but currently I have no idea of where it is? I'm currently taking a break and I'll look for it latter. ARGGGHHH! 🤯
👍👍👍👍👍
Hello. Thank you for the great tips! What I was hoping for is finding Pink spray paint.
I don’t believe i Can use the sprays that are for automotive parts on my gas grill and have yet to find a HIGH heat pink spray anywhere online. What did you all use for this one? Thank you :) and Happy Thanksgiving!
Great video,it helped a lot. Also, what Facebook page do you admin on. I can’t seem to find.
They all look so nice . What did you guys use on the plastic parts? Also did you guys use the same stuff on the gloss black? Thanks!
Yes, gloss black paint on the black grill. The plastic parts we used a sort of armor all style wipes.
Great video! Love the tips, I have the titanium colored grill. I'd like to repaint it but paint it, the factory color. Any suggestions which paint brand might have the same or close color?
You like the titanium color? Maybe you can order it straight from weber or find it on amazon. Not sure.
Great video, thanks.
Do you need to bake the lid once painted?
Yes, most of these paints need to be cured at 200 degrees F for one hour.
Nice job, but you will achieve better results, if do not touch the sanded surface right before painting. Degreasing is very important for good results.
Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for the tips guys. It's on the list for my summer jobs before Xmas. Quick question - will a single 340 g can be enough for a standard weber q lid? Cheers
Hey Neil, that should be plenty of paint. Cheers and good luck!
Hi great video and thanks for the ideas! Just curious if that VHT paint you used requires a 200 degree baking afterwards like you mentioned? Or would it be ok to put lid back on and get straight to grillin?
It definitely needs to cure at 200 F for 1 hour. Otherwise it will bubble on you.
@@GallaghersGrub do you literally put the "whole" lid in an Oven or BBQ for 1hr @ 200F?
Thanks for the video! Do you spray paint underneath the lid too (or just the lip)?
In a previous video he said he doesn’t paint inside
Just the top of the lid. Cheers!
Yes and the grill grates too adds flavor✅✅👍
Can you cure the VHT paint by preheating the lid on the weber? Or does it have to go in the oven?
Yes, I have. You need to cure it at 200 degrees F for one hour. Since the Q doesn't run that low, I would heat it up to about 250, then turn off the gas. Repeat that for the hour. Worked for me.
Getting ready to restore my Q2200 and was wondering how the VMT paint is holding up after seven months?
The silver paint I used has been holding up great.
Can I ask how the copper paint is holding up second time round? I’m looking at doing mine the same colour. Cheers
The paint holds up. You definitely need to cure it though before going to high heat.
Awesome, thanks for that. It looks awesome so I’ll definitely give it a go.
A freind of mine asks. He's moving to an apartment, can't use his gas Weber Q. Wanted to know your opinion of the electric Weber Q.
Never tried the electric. Apologies for not knowing
It’s a grill. I would never waste my time painting it. 😂
Ok, Picasso.
