I found a baby Q 100 with a for free sign in somones front yard about 2 months ago. Fully dismantled it, hit the interior with oven cleaner and scotch bright. I sanded the top and the bottom with 220 grit, wiped off with damp paper towel followed by tack cloth. I sprayed the lid with almond Rustoleum high temp BBQ paint and the bottom with black. I cleaned all of the nooks and crannys on the plastic chassis with a magic eraser sponge. I purchased a 2 piece cast iron grate set on Amazon. Reassembled and cured the paint by preheating it for awhile before throwing some steaks on. Best trash find and best grill I've ever had. Weber Qs are awesome!

I want to thank you so much for sharing your tips and routine for cleaning these grills. We bought ours around 2006 and hadn’t used ours since 2020 since we moved and it was a scary nasty mess. I never removed the grate all that time. Shame on me. I was going to cook burgers on it today and was shocked at how bad it looked inside and out. Id have sworn we needed a new cast iron grate. I set about cleaning and scraping out the crud. After about an hour of cleaning and removing alot of debris, it was cleaned enough to cook on once I scraped seasoned the grates after cleaning. I tried lighting it and it fired right up! 😳 my husband has enough projects so with the help of your videos, Im going to take it apart and give it a proper cleaning and face lift! The paint blistered off the exterior lid but it should restore nicely. The plastic scraper worked perfect. This little gem will be going camping with us in the Class C motor home and will get much more love than we’ve shown it in the past! Thank you for such a complete series! 😉. God bless!

Big thanks to you and Sean for this series. I have an embarrassingly dirty Q that was badly in need of a deep clean for use in some tailgating/camping I'll be doing in the near future, and I took a first crack at it last night for a couple of hours. Great series! I have restored a couple of kettles and these Q's also. I like the wire cup brush, will try that out - especially on the burner tubes. I wouldn't use them on the porcelain enameled kettle bowls, for those I use razor scrapers and steel wool (and SOS pads). I usually separate kettle bowls and Q domes (and the grate(s)) and place them in to separate big plastic yard trash bags. I cover them in heavy duty Easy Off oven cleaner and then tie the bags up so they "marinade" for a day or two. I do the same thing with kettles (place kettle bowl on a 30 gallon trash can - acts as a perfect form-fitting work surface and you can push the crap out through the vent holes into the lined trash can). Then scrape with a plastic putty knife. I'm going to try to paint my next Q. Thinking I'll mask the embossed "Q" with tape and vaseline and make the dome orange and the "Q" white (Go Vols!). Everything else soaks in hot water and Dawn for a day or two, except the electronics / ignition. After the EZ-Off marinade and the Dawn soaking, the grates clean up to factory new condition with a nylon brush. Hardest thing is getting oxidation off the drip tray - almost NO ONE uses the drip pans or lines them with foil. I'll try the wire cup brush on the next one. If I ruin it, I can replace it for $20-30USD.

May I ask a question ? What have you found about the spacers between the the legs and the lower body ? They are many times found broken. One of mine was broken. Weber had that part only available with the legs. It is some sort of compressed material that i assume does not transfer heat. You can see it by how they break. And no, my q was never rough handled after my possession so i assume it broke in shipping. And it's nothing you can see until many years later when doing a full overhaul as i did and when i found it. Still ticks me off that such a thing from weber is not available. Thanks,

Great series. Now I have to admit I really liked the original color but enjoyed you doing the original vid on painting it and how simple it was to do. But this new color looks great. Now a suggestion, if you decide in a year or two to paint it again, not saying you will, but consider masking the recessed area with the "Q" name on top. Spray the new color, then pull the masking tape and end up with a two colored "Q" top. That new current color would make a great accent color. And with the heat we are having I can't but think just leaving it out under the sun a few days would season the paint all by itself. Now get some food in that grill 😃👍🔥🍔🥩🌭🍗🍻.

Ohhh, how envious the many 12th men would be, definitely unique. Cheers buddy. Btw,only been able to do 2 cooks on the big IVS so far,not enough time. What a great video! It has inspired me to paint my old Q320, however the lid had some chips and the powder coating has chipped/blistered in some parts. Now I'm torn between lightly sanding 400 grit, which probably will still show the imperfections OR strip back the lid with paint stripper (weber says it's made of cast aluminum), etch prime and spray. I'm yet to find an etch primer that will stand up to 600F or anyone online who has done this. Does your restoration guy have any advice on this?

    Hi, Great series of videos!
I am now cleaning my Q200, and I'm facing an issue with the shelves and top.
On the shelves I have like white stains I'm unable to remove with soap/oven cleaner.
On the top, on the external part there are also stains, like the color is fading (black)
please advise (I'd like to avoid repainting the lid :) )

I think there's a magic erasure product that will remove the grease stains on the sides of the lid. You should join the Weber Q Facebook group and pose your question there. You'll definitely get answers. Hope this helps. Cheers!

I would spray the interior of the lid with engine paint so the aluminum doesn't corrode. Pretty sure the white residue is the aluminum corroding.

Would painting the bottom portion of the grill affect it?
I’m in the process of restoring a q series grill.

Sean do you have a method for troubleshooting the LP connector hose and regulator? My q 200 will not light. It was working fine and decided to clean it up per your videos, which are great may I say, but when I completed it would not relight. I refueled and still no luck lighting it. I figure you may have had experience with this. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you just leave the inside of the grill wirebrushed, without putting any paint or something to protect it from rust? I wirebrushed the inside of my lid on a weber and it doesn't look great. Would you recommend I use a heat resistant paint for the inside of the lid?
