- It’s been a long time coming but we’re here: ladies and gentlemen, the new Ford GT. Driven. We test the Blue Oval’s astonishing 647bhp supercar in California at Laguna Seca, and on the gorgeous - if traffic-packed - Pacific Coast Highway.

A lot of people don't realize that the weight to hp ratio and balance of the areo is engineered to have the 6 cylinder in the car being the perfect performance match ! That's why the seat doesn't move ! The suspension and weight balance was calculated for maximum performance ! Otherwise why not put in a V12 or V8 ? Mathematically it decreases performance ! This is a road car not a drag car my fellow gear heads !
You could still put a V12 in a road car. The thing is - this car was made for LeMans 24h and is a proper racecar since 2016. Now it has a little "normal" version that's street legal. That's why it has a V6.
There is a video on here from Drag Times with a gt against a 2019 ZR1 with not cats or resonators at a 40mph roll at a drag strip the gt wins everytime I forget how many runs, its a good video.
Nope. This is why this car will depreciate like crazy and the 2006 Ford GT is the best GT that Ford has ever produced. A proper V8 in a proper sports car. I suppose Corvette has taken it from here instead (C6 Z06 records, C6 ZR1, C7 Z51, C7 ZR1, and soon the all-new C8 Z51)

@zzzx xzzz - Actually, Ford built this machine as a race car, first, and a road car second. Just look at the interior - plain, sparse and business like, as a race car needs to be.

The viper ACR, corvette ZR1 and GT are without a doubt super cars they're not even cheaply made, in fact they will last much longer than any European sports car

Yes, with a V-8 you would have 0-60 in 2 seconds and a top speed pushing 240 mph without breaking a sweat, this car is SCREAMING for V-8 treatment and I hope that Ford builds a limited number just to make a statement power to the world.

For those people whining about it "only being a V6", the Porsche 911 GT2 RS is "only a 3.8L F6" and it gets to 100km/h in 2.8 seconds... you don't need 8 or more cylinders to go ridiculously fast.

Ford has shown that high technology and engineering has proven that V-6 engines can match and in some cases can outperform V-8 engines. Zero to sixty in three seconds and over two hundred miles per hour from a six cylinder engine is amazing. But it is not all about the powertrain, it is all about the chassis, weight distribution and aerodynamics.

I own an ecoboost .v6 twin F150 . Love the truck for what it is but ford totally lied about its performance . My fuel mirage isn't good for a v6 . Actually if I'll be honest it sucks . Had I known the before hand I would of got the 5.0 .

I always knew the V6 or Straight 6 Motor was the sweet spot for power, economy and overall maintenance and reliability. Turbo a 6 and you're easily capable of matching motors far larger in capacity.
@S P - Exactly, just look at the multitude of races won by BMW and their bullet proof Straight 6!
This really makes me want to jump for a Supra. My STI just requires so much $$$ to get a lot of power that really isn't reliable or economically sound. It seems the V6 is powerful enough to not wast too much fuel and doesn't overpower and waste fuel.

Just the weight saved is pretty significant. Ford is killing it with this car, in looks, performance,and engineering. It used to be be all about displacement, still sort of is. But the future is big HP with smaller displacement. The Mitsubishi Evo can do 800hp out of a 4 banger, why can’t America do a 650-750 even 850 hp V6 engine?
@@SVTJD they actually can my buddy has a v6 2014 mustang and its around 730whp it has twin turbos forged internals bigger injectors boost cam full exhaust 4000 stall and the list goes on there are lots of reliable v6 American engines they are just slept on

Ford just released/introduced the Ford GT Mk.II this week at Goodwood. You have to hear this new more powerful version of this car. It sounds everybit as good as a Porsche RSR 991. Sounds like they've upped the rev limit by 2,000rpm and sweetened that exhaust note to a howl that will make anyone smile and forget about wanting a V8.
If the Ford GT doesn't blow you away your not a car person so go buy a vega or pinto and go about your business and leave the ppl that enjoys a true mind blowing stud alone.
Don't mess with the Pinto, you rear after burner. The Pinto with that German 2.0 L over head valve it's what started all the modern engine cam technology.

So crazy that it has a Ford badge and that it’s really that good with a turbo v6. Doesn’t make much sense, but I’m happy to see it. Truly amazing.

@@n300zx931 It doesn't follow super car norms, because it is not a supercar by the standard definition. Those are McLarens, Lamborghinis, Koenigsegg, etc. Cars made for the public first, and may or may not get involved in racing. They have opulent interiors with lots of glitz and show. Look at the interior of the GT - it's as plain vanilla as you can get, because it is a race car first, and they neither need or want that excess stuff in them, adding unnecessary weight.

I cannot remember the UA-camrs name but I originally saw him with Parker on Vehicle Virgins, but he ordered his Ford GT in Miami Blue and it is incredible looking in that color scheme.

I love this car, as the saying goes if it goes as good as it looks.... well then this is gonna wipe everything out bc this is beautiful, plus its using a V6 instead of an 8, plus the ecoboost engine is the way of the future of the internal combustion engine, all it needs is a few electric motor/generator units + a KERS system and it will give the green ppl a hard on too haha brilliant, absolutely brilliant. i am in love with fords again, i stepped away after they stopped the sierra sapphire cosworth 4*4, that was my last love, but have found this little beauty

Bentley is still using v12 twin turbo tractor engines barely making 600 hp. What Ford did was amazing.

Ford did great, and they not once thought about how well it would sit in a garage...or how well it would drive on the highway. They made it beautiful and useful in its aero design, its an awesome car.

It seems the number one thing to look for in sport car by a Bloke is if it's ''PROPER''! The number one word used by all of them.
3.5l is fine given it picks up quicker, doesn’t use as much weight, and you don’t need to go more than 215mph at Le Mans

@Allen Saunders - But it's NOT a supercar - it's a race car, which is the only reason Ford built it. Just look at the interior - not lush and glitzy looking like a supercar. Looks more plain vanilla, like an economy car - that's the sign of a race car!

Ford GT - Roughly 500K - Willow Springs - 1:23.69Corvette ZR1- Roughly 130K - Willow Springs - 1:23.70And that's one reason why I'm not a fan of the GT.
Take out the V-6 and install a V-12, which is naturally balanced vertically & horizontally, plus, the firing order is balanced, meaning, cylinders do not fire on the same bank in a row. Yes, the V-12 does not fit as good as the V-6, but, when spending this kind of money, make it fit. Also, when you show off your engine, you will not be embarrassed with the V-12.

themcarter77 it sound just like my f150 ecobooat with aftermarket exhaust . Make another type of car with the motor . The FORD GT should never be anything less then a v8 .
Not 100% sure but I believe the racecar version was designed with the v6 to be more efficient and get better gas mileage in the long/24 hour races. The gt was a racecar first... it would only make since to try and bring it to the street just the way it was.
Plus if it's making the same power with less weight, there's really no downside. I personally don't care what it sounds like😂
Which V8? Not anything from Ford! The supercharged 5.4L used before was a truck engine and it's gone.
The 5.0 Coyote and the 5.2 Voodoo (bespoke for GT350) are both far too wide to fit this chassis. They are 2 of the widest V8s ever fitted to any sports car. The result would be a very different car, nothing like the shape you see here.. I do not know the weight of this power plant, it's probably similar to the Coyote but the width and total volume are much less. It had been developed in Rolex endurance racing for 4 years before use in the GT. The 3.5L (not very Eco) EcoBoost in the GT has the Right Stuff (for a race car). It won it's class at Le Mans.
Time will tell when the (surviving) GTs are the most valuable and desirable out of production supercars.
Anyway, 3.0 seconds 0 - 60 and 216 mph top speed suggest that it has enough power and doesn't need any more cylinders.

Don't knock a 6 cyl. The 911 gt2 gets 700 hp and great performance out of a 6.
@Jim Johnson - Good point, Jim! Many youngsters today have no idea that a 190 HP V6 Ferrari won the F1 World Championship in 1960. Porsche has proven throughout its history the 6 cylinder engine is more than capable of beating larger V8 engines.

The GT’s engine’s purpose isn’t TO BE A V6. The GT’s engine’s purpose is TO BE THE BEST ENGINE FOR THE CAR. The original car wasn’t designed around the engine, the original was designed for performance, and a V8 is what it ended up getting. This one may have a V6, but it still has plenty of the GT DNA. And the great thing about a car that uses most of its pieces with one of the best selling pickup trucks of all time? Plenty of parts and pieces to help maintain it, and it’s not terribly complex. Also? It has an IMMENSE amount of heritage as THE ONLY AMERICAN CAR TO HAVE EVER WON LE MANS. The company’s reputation doesn’t define if they produce a super car, the actual car defines itself; and Ford has a godsdamned supercar.

A true Drivers car that is far more capable than its drivers. A v~6 powered car which must be seriously handicapped by every racing body in which it competes against v~8, 10 &12 so that they can compete and yet still it wins title after title.

@IMschleepcuh69 - I wouldn't count on it! Wouldn't surprise me if you saw a TT I-4 with gobs of power. That's the trend - smaller, lighter, more powerful engines rather than old world large, heavy, less efficient V8s. Don't get me wrong, I grew up in the 60s and am very familiar with, and love the sound of a bellowing American V8. I am also aware that they will be sliding into history before too many years as great improvements in technology are turning them into dinosaurs.
Hasn't this car been out since 2016? I know it won the 2016 24hr of Le Mans. Maybe this 2018 version is an updated/different model than that one??

Sorry but a 488 is by no means a "run in the mill" car... It's a superb feat of engineering and style.

GM is still having nightmares about this car, they have already fired 19 engineers because they cannot come up with a car to come close to competing with this Ford GT.

At $130,000, the ZR1 is just sitting on the dealer's showroom floor, while the Ford GT has a waiting list up to 2 years long, and it's almost a half a million dollars you do the math, you tell me who wants what, or maybe you drive a Chevy Cruze!

For 300 grand I can get the monster fastest PORSCHE GT2.RS in the entire history of PORSCHE ! And save 200 grand ! I just bought a 2019 Hellcat REDEYE last month for 90 grand. Best damn car I ever bought. Car is amazing in every aspect. Scary fast also.

So 50+ yrs later they went from a 7.0.ltre to a 3.5 ltre and all the while hp pwr was not jeopardized.
The '66 Ford GT 40 MK II that won Le Mans was a 485 HP 427 big block. This car is 647 HP and would absolutely run away from the 427!
