  • Australia’s cheapest large diesel off-road SUV lacks a few key ingredients 👉 Full Review: www.carsales.com.au/editorial...
The 2023 Mahindra Scorpio has arrived in Australia at a bargain-basement introductory price of under $45,000 drive-away.
That makes the all-new large off-road SUV significantly more affordable than chief rivals like the Toyota Prado and Ford Everest, which also lack the Scorpio’s long seven-year warranty.
But there are some key safety, multimedia and packaging shortcomings here, as we found at the launch of Mahindra’s new flagship SUV.

Some of the active safety systems are a nuisance and a lot of people turn them off anyway.
Almost had an accident the other day when My Pajero sport braked when I didn't want it to.
Scorpio looks to provide good functions at reasonable value.
And you don't need sat nav if you have car play and Android auto so its good it doesn't have sat nav.
Spare should have been mounted on the rear door like the prado.
Not sure why they bothered with that 3rd row?
    Family friendly price.
Really needs a longer wheel base to be alternative to Prado/Everest.
4WD prices are going through the roof with all the new models.
The Pajero Sport is nothing like the old Pajero in terms of size, and doesn't come close to a Prado.
The Scorpio is 20k cheaper than a Pajero Sport Exceed.
The Toyota Prado will probably go up another 10-15k when it arrives but Toyota reliability and new motor will make it sell.
Its the only real competitor to the Everest ATM.
Everest has a really wide model range but their models are 50k-87k. But there are a lot of QC issues being reported.
Grenadier not bad either but a bit exe.
The other cat amongst the pigeons is whatever Kia and Hyundai bring out in the next 18 months.
The Scorpio is a welcome change. I reckon they will sell heaps.

I sold my Prado and got a Scorpio N and it is a worthy competitor. The ride quality is on par on tar and gravel notwithstanding the shorter wheelbase. The ride is just as good as the Prado. Fuel consumption 1-1,5 l/100 km better. The performance on the road feel similar. And it has 3 usb ports, the Prado only one🖐🏻. For nearly half the price, what a bargain, and a better quarantee and simular maint plan. Cant go wrong as teliability apparantly very good but time will tell.

For it's onroad and offroad capabilities, the Mahindra Scorpio-N is an excellent vehicle in it's price category.
I see it selling very well here in Southern Africa for the kind of terrain we have.

Ford entered into a binding agrement to use Mahindra engines in india to manufacture to offer globally
Later they decided to shut indian operations. So that agreement was cancelled.

It's very good. Despite a lack of some safety gear, it's a very decent vehicle. Well built , practical it's a decent drive. The lack of safety gear is currently being addressed as is the lack of a decent dealers & parts network . Approved aftermarket parts are being organised as well. We also miss out on the standard Nav, Alexa & Adreno X Multi Media system as offered in India & other markets. These will come here at a later stage

They need to stop comparing the Scorpio to the larger Prado, MUX and Pajero Sport. It’s market is unique being a full chassis option for towing the caravan or camper van for the customers who would usually want to get a Subaru Forester, XTrail, Outlander or RAV4.
We have been shopping for 6 months for something to tow our Jayco Camper, the Subaru Forester we have now can tow it but no safety margin.
What else is in this price range with a full chassis and capable to towing a family’s lightweight toys.
LDV D90, yes but after reading about some of the warranty issues after purchasing, I would not trust any of the China vehicles. The customers come first, not in the eyes of a Chinese brand.
What I am disappointed with, Mahindra have released a new vehicle and as I write this 4 weeks after release, they still don’t have a tow-bar available to purchase. Also the lies about the reason they are only doing captains chairs in the second row, “bench seat has supply issues”??? Pull the other one Mahindra, we all know it’s because you don’t have a centre lap/sash belt for the second row available so made the choice to market it with captain’s chairs for Australia. Have a look at the South Africa UA-cam clips and see they have both options.

    • @PoliticalMatter

In India, Scorpio always had the captain chairs in the second row. They bought it here. No idea about the tow capacity but vehicle in itself is good for hard terrain.

@@tonybruce looks like you have a serious problem and you know what that is…. You are too quick to judge…. My point is actually in favour of Scorpio which is that comparing Prado and Scorpio in itself is wrong… it’s like comparing apples and oranges… when the UA-camr like this one starts with the premise that it’s a challenger to prado they set the bias against Scorpio because those who have never driven or seen a Scorpio will assume these two vehicles as comparable which they are not. I have driven both Scorpio and Prado extensively. Scorpio is a mid sized SUV and Prado is a full size therefore the product offerings in each case is going to be naturally different. Pitting them against each other will make Scorpio look bad and inferior car.

As much as I am intrigued by the Scorpio (and await the MKII which will hopefully have all the electronics wrinkles ironed out), I simply don't understand why reviewers insist on describing it as a "large" SUV, then go on to explain it's significantly smaller in pretty much every respect (dimensions, power, towing) than real 'large' SUVs. Why not just start off by calling it a medium-sized SUV? It still represents a good deal for the spec.
Come on Mahindra. Fix those bloody irritating bugs, fit a larger fuel tank and then you'll have a huge winner on your hands.
