How good is the new Range Rover - owner's review after 1 year and 15,000 KM

  • Here is my status after 15,000 KM and one year in the new Range Rover L460 P510e.
The new Range Rover is one of the most desirable SUVs of all time. It looks the part, the design is in a class of its own, and the driving experience is comfortable and luxurious, up with the best premium cars out there.
The car seems well built but Range Rovers do have a reputation of poor quality and technical problems. The reputation is perhaps more hear-say, but I can let you in on the secret, that the reputation is partly justified. Other brands have issues too, but you are more likely have issues with your Range Rover.
But when there are no issues with the Range Rover, you are in heaven. It is great to drive, next level luxury, really.
In terms of the power train, the combination of the powerful petrol engine and the electric motor is near perfect, smooth and very powerful.
The consumption of the big Range Rover is surprisingly low. On long trips you’d mostly drive in hybrid mode. With a mix of city and highway, the petrol consumption comes out at 7-8 liters / 100 km.
After 15000 km my petrol consumption is now down to an average of 4.6 liters petrol / 100 km plus the electric power consumption as I charge the battery almost every day.
With the 38.2 kWh gross battery, of which 31.8 kWh net are usable, the electric-only range is at least 75 km in winter and 105 km in summer which is very good, I think. When driving in EV-mode, the consumption ranges between 30kWh in summer and 42kWh in winter per 100 km.
If you are sports car enthusiast then the Range Rover is not for you, then you should go for a Porsche, BMW, Audi or maybe Mercedes. The Range Rover is very soft, even in the hardest setting, and it rolls in the bends. But if you are a driver who focuses on comfort and style, and if the Range Rover image appeals to you, then this is a great choice.
What speaks against it? High running cost, high purchasing price and the size when driving in town. And the possibility of the technical issues.

Similar experience here. We already have 3 RRs in our family and we are very happy. I know what they say about reliability, but having also owned a number of WAG vehicles, I must say that RRs are on par, if not even more reliable that audis/Bentleys and so forth.

After another 35000km in 2.5 years I had just 360 camera aligned, cruise control sensor calibration and both 12V (and 13V) battery change. Thanks for this honest review. We had recently spent 8 weeks on the road in India where these cars are built. We found: In Goa none. In the state of Karnataka only very few in its capital of Bengaluru. None in Mysore, well there are practically no street signs there anyway. Over to Tamil Nadu. Yes in its capitol Chennai there are the largest dealerships with glass palates. Still they are outnumbered by BMW's and even Skodas. There are even the lates electric French cars ready on the road to test drive. In Pudycherry where the police is still in French hats they drive Peugeots and Citroens if they have money. Further south Tata electric cars are ruling the new generation of IT graduates and nursing trainees. In Kerala they have solar powered airports and shopping centers that can put the Dubai Mall to shame. I spent time with many affluent photographers who make adventure documentaries about the Himalayas. They do crave for French diesel small SUV's just because their friends drive them and they are efficient. Indian fuel stations all display the density of fuel and the delivery date. A Rover driver would only get fuel from a very recent and reliable delivery. Number one make is still Suzuky-Maruti with the Koreans making fast inroads. So I asked the rich: Where are your Rovers? They answered: Mostly driving around in New Delhi!

The “issues” you experience are exactly the same as my 21 Mercedes GLS. Air suspension will have a glitch fault with a hard pothole or rain on road (I live in Florida). Turn it off and back on and nothing happened. Then the headlight DRLs I’ve had to other cars I bought new within the first year and had software or hardware fixes , Audi A5, VW Jetta GLI, Mercedes GLS and C-class, Alfa Giulia, BMW 650i. Winter tires isn’t a thing out in FL so I don’t have to worry about that. My GLS has had recalls or small minor issues first year and a half but dealer took care and gave me loaners, and after that nothing except for service and tires. I call the first year or so with new cars “growing pains” of the car getting used to existing and working to know you, I guess. I still have the GLS with 50k miles and looking to trade for LWB 7 seater Range Rover. My uncle and his wife bought Range Rovers every 4 yrs for last 20yrs and they virtually never had “issues” nothing major just minor growing pains.

I ordered my P530 5 months ago. It has arrived at my local dealership, but with some issues already... there was a recall that had to be taken care of at port before coming to the dealership, so the delivery date was delayed by 2 weeks. Then, the delivery... well... has not happened yet, as there is a nationwide dealer software issue and they cannot make the delivery of the car. The electric side steps were not installed (although ordered), and the extended leather on the dashboard was not installed either, although I ordered it. So now I have a beautiful black and ivory interior, with an ugly, cheap looking upper dashboard. Looks like insulation materials. I haven't received the car yet and I am already fed up with it.

I think you may have been unlucky with courtesy cars. I’ve had 2 RR Sports and now a RR P550e. The first from Huber in Zug, the second from Ausee in Au, and the third from Emil Frey Sihlbrugg, after the management change. I’ve had good luck with reliability, but when I did need a courtesy car it has almost always been a Range Rover Evoque and on one occasion an iPace EV. We will do our first road trip this week and with only 500km; almost all electric, on the clock it will be good to finally hear the engine! Thanks for your review.

this car didn't depreciate what are you talking about? In Switzerland this is nearly up there with the G wagon. Who wants an X7 or GLS, when you can have this.
And I say that as a Mercedes driver

That's why you buy it pre-owned a couple years old, or lease. Doesnt matter if it's a Land Rover or Honda, buying new isn't financially smart and you'll lose money.

Can’t argue with that and I always wanted one - had the Queen’s for six months - but with the problems outlined it’s just too much. Also, when my GV80 went in for a service (which they collected for) my loaner was another GV80. I really, really want Range Rovers to be brilliant but their reliability it’s just too much of an issue for the prices.

An Opel Corsa loaner for a top-of-the-range JLR product? That's not even the same brand, let alone the same parent company. At Mercedes-Benz they loan you an A-class or B-class, irrespective of the car it replaces.

I believe him, from what he just said, I think you can still go ahead and buy one, but you need another car. I don't think it would be a wise choice to go with a Range Rover on Long trips.
