Summary: 1. The biggest lever you can pull to improve your health is moving more, and putting your muscles under stress. This will look different for everyone, but the basic principle is to do enough to create an adaptation. This will help you to maintain muscle mass and strength as you age. 2. Nutrition matters. In general , a lower carb Mediterranean diet is ideal. Having said that, the gut microbiome is complex. Whatever you do, make decisions to make yourself more metabolically healthy. It’s clear that insulin resistance and higher levels of blood glucose are what drives most diseases. Besides diet, the best thing to improve metabolic health is to move muscles after eating since muscles absorb blood glucose when they’re moved. A 15 minute walk after eating can make a big difference. 3. Get your heart rate up to 85%-95% of your maximum for very short periods a few times per week. This doesn’t take up a lot of time. 30 second bursts with a minute recovery can be done in 5-10 minutes. 4. Don’t overthink strength training. Do 8 exercises each week. Reps should be determined by muscle failure. Do as many reps as you can with whatever weight you choose. Stop right before muscle failure. Do this 3x per exercise. 5. Everyone should take 5g-10g of creatine monohydrate daily. It helps with body composition and brain health. 6. Our food supply doesn’t offer the nutrient density to meet most of our micronutrient needs. Supplementation may be needed for most people. 7. Alcohol has no health benefit. Having said that, if you’re optimizing for health in other ways, occasional drinking may not hurt you. Blue zones are an example of this. 8. There’s a lot scientists still haven’t discovered on all of these things, so be open to changing perspective as more is discovered. 9. Brain decline happens as we age. Continuing to do challenging things can support cognitive health. Be a life long learner, and once you master something, move on to something new. 10. Medical specialists are helpful for treating acute issues, but a more integrated approach to medicine is the best for prevention and improving health outcomes for people with chronic conditions. Medicine should take a systems approach. 11. 30-minutes of brisk walking per day is enough to get the longevity benefits for brain and cardiovascular health. 12. For a healthy brain, focus on nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management, and social connection.

Soil quality could be a factor in lower nutrition, but a bigger problem is in the seeds. Most of our seeds are bred and selected based on production. The more a plant produces, the less it can give you in each bite. There’s also a weakness in the crops that comes from plant inbreeding that farmers try to overcome by pumping them with chemical fertilizers. Landrace garden with whatever varieties you can get ahold of, let them struggle without fertilizers or sprays, let them cross pollinate, save seeds from the survivors. You’ll have less problems the longer you do this. You’ll have healthier produce the longer you do this. Stop inbreeding crops and stop selecting solely for production.
Seems like I've got to work out constantly to stay alive. I do the elliptical for 30 minutes weekly and balance and stretches 4 days a week. That's all I'm doing, I refuse to do anything else. If this is not enough, too bad, I'm not totally sure a long life is what I want anyway.
In addition to the resistance training exercises and strength training also practice intermittent fasting, eat whole foods and cutting out the industrial seed oils and adding some necessary supplementation will get us into that healthier zone. Are the residents living in these blue zones consuming much highly processed foods and oils versus the United States where a lot of processed foods and industrial seed oils is massively consumed and who coincidentally have currently the lowest longevity rate in the western world. It may come down to the quality and amount of processing done to the foods which is most critical.

What is forgotten in this debate about diet is that evolution is only concerned with what makes an animal fit to reproduce. It could not give a rats behind beyond successful reproduction of the next generation for how long or how healthy you live beyond that into old age once you become (for all sorts of reasons) no longer reproducing. Meat ion this context is arguably better because it gives lots of nutrients that make you stronger etc etc - so it will be selected for. My suspicion is that eating plants - with all the potential benefits it has is that it will extend lifespan better It's akin to large and dwarf stars the former shines brighter but the latter lives longer.
I totally agree with this approach. The only question for me is, whether there is an optimal balance between animal derived foods and plants so that you are getting the best from both worlds, meaning living a long but also energetic and healthy life or whether it should be a 100% plant based diet for maxing out longevity and health span. I tend to lean towards plant based but animal protein on occasion rather than just plants, but of course I have nothing to back this up, just my thoughts and point of view.
@@Mary_QQQ that is not true - you can get all the protein you need from plants - and research also shows that you do not be need as much protein as many think they do. Your body reacts to the amount of protein you eat to some extent. Research is indicating that the amount of meat you eat increases damage to your pancreas. While you can survive on just meat - thats not a diet that is associated with longevity
Probably the latter. For optimal muscle growth (not talking longevity), it's 9-12 sets a week. Preferably spread to 2 or 3 sessions for the sole reason your reps are more intense/stronger =/= less exhausting versus doing them on the same day.
Drinking too much can change your DNA and shorten your telemeres. The WHO now states that there is no safe amount of alcohol. As someone who loves drinking, but trying to cut down to almost nothing, I don't think drinking is beneficial in any way except as a social lubricant, but sometimes not even that.
"Bodybuilding" puts the body in an anabolic state, which in turn increases mTOR, which in turn contributes to ageing. Limiting mTOR is one of the best anti-ageing practices there is.
What always happens after these kinds ofvideo is that a slew of people write in to boast about fit and healthy and brilliant they are and await hundreds of thumbs up for bragging. This one had fewer than usual, so that's something to be thankful for. What nobody ever talks about and I suppose does not dare to talk about, is what is the purpose of living longer? Most great artists lived unhealthy lives and died young or at least not old, but they left a legacy. Most interesting lives in fact practically ALL interesting lives are biographies of poor health and risk taking. My own father smoked seventy cigarettes a day and died when he was 60 but he had a heck of an intersting life and had two childrens books published and plenty of other books, was captured by the Italians during the war, worked as an MI6 agent in Lisbon. But I suppose modern health gurus would throw up their hands in horror and tell him he was living unhealthily? Are not most very fit people deadly bores?
@@lauliemcgovern6608 My opinion: I believe yoga would be. In standing poses, we're resisting against the ground (gravity) and ourselves. Sun Salutation and other asanas require strength, balance, and endurance. I know that when I'm unhealthy, I have a hard time doing standing yoga; I resort to rolling around on my mat.
I’ve done hot power yoga 60-75 min 5-6 days a week the past month and my dexa scale says I’ve added 4 lbs of muscle, decreased resting pulse from 68 to 58 and dropped 7/5 points on BP. So for me it’s resistance training. For anybody inversions should be resistance training and virtually every pose you can take to a level to humble the strongest people around.
Diet is one thing, but torturing animals for food... how to take that, our factory farms are he'll on earth for animals!!! How do chicken live in small cages, dairy cows - do kot have a normal day in their lives😢... how can you happily and healthy live with yourself knowning how many animals have suffered for that.... not just diet...but lived in torture.😢
I personally think carrying grocery bags is closer to strength training than resistance training. Seems the terms are being used interchangeably a bit on this video, however.
I cary a grocery bag average 2 feet to cart or walk 50 feet to the car with 5 pounds a few times a month . Is that good strength training ? My strength building is moving a 170 pound body average 5 miles a day inside and outside . Strength test if I could continue lift 60 pound floor jack 60 pound ebike 30 pound ladder frequently at 68 years old .
So meats back on the menu boys once again! There’s always someone who wants to give this message that flies in the face of all research. A little meat is okay but not a carnivore diet.
@Eugenetra7 compared to what? Just over 50 years ago nobody had a hot shower. 85 years ago there was no antibiotics, polo maimed children, people in the west are not starving, they have shelter and all the knowledge of the world literally in the palm of their hand.

Plants have insufficient high quality protein to sustain health span
@@Mary_QQQ that is not true - you can get all the protein you need from plants - and research also shows that you do not be need as much protein as many think they do. Your body reacts to the amount of protein you eat to some extent. Research is indicating that the amount of meat you eat increases damage to your pancreas. While you can survive on just meat - thats not a diet that is associated with longevity
anyone got a tldr?
2 hours and 22 minutes? Life is too short.
Figuring out how to pay my taxes...guy very very essential groceries...is a mind challenge...
Should fight off dementia!!!
Too many commercials to enjoy this
Im more confused, so is it 2-3 sets per muscle group once a week, or 8-9 sets per muscle group spread over 3 times a week?
Probably the latter. For optimal muscle growth (not talking longevity), it's 9-12 sets a week. Preferably spread to 2 or 3 sessions for the sole reason your reps are more intense/stronger =/= less exhausting versus doing them on the same day.
I’m a plant exclusive vegan and I don’t know why but taking Creatine supplements scare me.
Two hours and 20 minutes??? Seriously? Does anyone have the Cliff Notes version of the transcript, preferably with compacted bullet points?
Drinking too much can change your DNA and shorten your telemeres. The WHO now states that there is no safe amount of alcohol. As someone who loves drinking, but trying to cut down to almost nothing, I don't think drinking is beneficial in any way except as a social lubricant, but sometimes not even that.
Creatine mono hydrate

I'd like to make it to 100 years old. Hopefully, l won't get hit by a bus.
Alcohol in any amount is detrimental to your health. Not complicated. Like anything 1 glass a week is better than 6 glasses a week etc.
Is yoga resistance training?
@@lauliemcgovern6608 My opinion: I believe yoga would be. In standing poses, we're resisting against the ground (gravity) and ourselves.
Sun Salutation and other asanas require strength, balance, and endurance. I know that when I'm unhealthy, I have a hard time doing standing yoga; I resort to rolling around on my mat.
I think so, if you do flow or kundalini kriyas that get the blood flowing and that challenge your strength
Yes but for muscle tone not muscle building, also great for flexibility and nervous system resets . 😊
Yes
I’ve done hot power yoga 60-75 min 5-6 days a week the past month and my dexa scale says I’ve added 4 lbs of muscle, decreased resting pulse from 68 to 58 and dropped 7/5 points on BP. So for me it’s resistance training. For anybody inversions should be resistance training and virtually every pose you can take to a level to humble the strongest people around.
At least give us the name of your guest, in the event that we want to see what else he has on UA-cam, books written etc.
2,5 hours? man come on..

2 5 Hr repetitive Talk shoulda bin 15 minutes. I listended trying to fall asleep with a Tailend cough from a cold.
And yes nothin new.
I personally think carrying grocery bags is closer to strength training than resistance training. Seems the terms are being used interchangeably a bit on this video, however.
Fyi, it is the same. You exercise your strength with resistance training. Carrying a grocery back for a certain amount of time is resistance.
Look at Ben azadi 90 day carnivore experiment podcast re fiber
A lot of bromides told at great length 😮
Who is blue shirt guy? No acknowledgement?
Bit longish 😂
This video was entirely too long to make a point
The obsession with longevity is unhealthy
True. It should be about quality of life, well-being.
All of our days are numbered by God. Read Psalms 90 and 139..
Try telling that to a Palestinian
So meats back on the menu boys once again! There’s always someone who wants to give this message that flies in the face of all research. A little meat is okay but not a carnivore diet.
Are you sure?
Toooo looooonnnnggggg who has this much free time?
Not gonna listen for more than two hours. Sorry. You should've made it easier to identify the parts in your talk.
Who cares lifes fucked
Who cares lifes fucked
Why say this?
@@77NickDale Because life is shit for most people?
@Eugenetra7 compared to what? Just over 50 years ago nobody had a hot shower. 85 years ago there was no antibiotics, polo maimed children, people in the west are not starving, they have shelter and all the knowledge of the world literally in the palm of their hand.
Unfuk it.
