Habits stay with us even when we don’t have the inspiration. All of it I grabbed from the book Unveiling Your Hidden Potential
I agree with everything you’ve said - I grew up very, very poor in the 60’s where most people had very little and we simply moved more - we had to walk to and from school, walk to the shops, all 4 of us children had to go grocery shopping with my mother to help carry home our weekly shopping. My sister and I had to help my mother do housework, prepare food, cook, wash clothes and iron. My brothers had to do the yard work and help in the veggie garden - it wasn’t just our family, everyone did these things. Our next door neighbour had 18 children and my mother would go over there everyday to help that neighbour and often she would send myself or my sister to help our neighbour as well. My mother just passed away recently and until the last 2 weeks of her life she couldn’t sit still, she was always up and down and on her feet doing things. I’m the same, if I have to sit still for more than 30 minutes I get antsy… My mother had a very, very sad, tough life but she never, ever got depressed, she never complained and just got on with things - and I admired this about her soooo much. I see a lot of young people are sad, depressed and suicidal and I think ‘…I wonder how depressed you’d be if you had were plunged into the lives of people like my mother… or those in war torn countries etc., I strongly agree with you when you say that people create so many ‘problems’ for themselves and I believe it’s because our lives are too comfortable, we’ve got things too good and too easy. I have to keep my mouth shut when I hear people complaining about ‘first world problems’… as a whole we take ourselves too seriously, are too entitled and self-absorbed…. Sometimes, I am honestly dumbfounded and very disheartened by how unbelievably lazy and self-absorbed the generations which came after me are…
I couldn’t agree more. My mom was the same way busy busy all the time. To wash clothes she had to walk to get water. Different rough conditions but nobody complained as much. She passed at 92 and very quick. I grew up doing errand always and so did my siblings. Our house was small but always clean. We drank goat milk, walked everywhere played outside. I know younger women /men they have everything material they are never happy always complaining. I’m raising special needs children, I cook everyday my home is clean, I think people need to spend more time outdoors, cook more at home , put phones away and enjoy life.
Im 76 and remember those days! I still run bike dance garden and help my and help my neighbors! What doesnt kill you makes you stronger! Keep on keeping on! Grateful! Grateful post!!
The tenets of my faith (Islam) teaches this principle. The five daily prayers; getting up very early in morning to pray is difficult, but great for spiritual healing and productivity. Fasting in the month Ramadan, and 2 recommended fasting on Mondays and Thursdays as an additional boost to get us disciplined as a believer, the giving of charity , giving out of what you love can be difficult but rewarding and frees one from greed and indulgence that leads to many ills/illnesses. May Allah almighty grant us the fortitude and strength to do what’s right. Thank you Dr for a brilliant reminder!!!🎉
I'm doing all that!!!❤❤❤ My BMI is 20, I don't take any medication, I don't eat anything from a package. In summer I swim 1 kilometre every day and dive the whole length of the swimming pool (25m). I look after 3 horses in retirement, they are over 30, walk my dog, practice yoga and the 5 Tibetans!! By the way I'm 72.😂😂😂
Such sensible advice for our modern world. I’ve had the stair rule since my mum went to hospital 10 years ago and I saw so many unwell people in their 60’s and 70’s. I also got an active dog.....no room for slacking there no matter what the weather!
Thank you for this message. This is so timely! My 32 year-old daughter spent the night because she just moved, and she can't get wifi until November 4th. She was so anxious that her dad told her to come over and stop stressing. What I added to my routine was adding 30 seconds of a cold shower at the end of my warm shower. I feel invigorated.
People have become lazy and self entitled. I am glad I was brought up at a time of struggle . The generations today have not shared the same experience and as you wisely explain have become far too comfortable. Moving is everything for our physical and mental health. Great and totally spot on with everything you are saying DR. Rangan .
Thanks for these words. I needed them. 💚 Whenever I crave sugar, I keep telling myself, no, I don't really. It's just my brain trying to trick me into eating sweet food.
This❤. After I Split qithmmy ex I bought a run down small farm by the coast of Norway and moved me and my four horses there. This year has been intense periods of hard physical labor in harsh conditions. And doing it step by step on my own with help of friends has done a profound change in my mentality and how I view myself and the world. Thanks for bringing this topic up❤️
Love your work. Ranghan! One of my favourite podcasts.. I broke my leg years ago, and I had to learn to walk properly again- I swore blind I would never use escalators etc, whilst I have the capacity to walk. 😊
This is great ❤❤❤ Thank you 😊😊😊 For the last couple of weeks I've been doing squat-to-standing-toe-raises whilst I do my teeth am and pm. I started on 20 and now I'm on 50...and I can see how 60 will be very soon. It's amazing and feels good. I keep pushing just past my comfort zone. Balance is improving too! Small things...big impacts!
I've never framed it as discomfort, I walk to the shop instead of driving because I want to get my step goal. I guess my unconscious rule is "walk when possible"
Right now this is very relevant as I currently have no running water in my house and have to pull it from a well in buckets nor do I have a heating element for my water. As a result I have to bathe in cold water by taking buckets of cold water and dowsing my body after scrubbing. The same with house cleaning and dishes. This also came in handy when due to the storm we lost power for 8 days. To be honest I felt more emotionally regulated not having to depend on unnatural light and scheduling my time around daylight. I noticed Ive gotten stronger from lifting 5 gallon buckets of collected water into the house and having to eat less due to the lack of power for cooking. Even when my situation changes I will still be very mindful not to squander the things I previously had in abundance and continue to go to the extra mile. It definitely builds character.
I lived off grid for years. You can buy a butane cooker and cook inside with the windows open, get a camp shower and a battery pack to run it. You can always heat up your water on the butane cooktop and pour it in the camp shower, with cold water, for a nice warm shower, if you don't want to do the cold water. You will still be uncomforatble, but less so than without these things.
Wow yes that must require a strong sense of character and resolve. Went without hot water for 4 weeks recently. Even that was a challenge especially washing in cold water. When these things are taken away we become aware of how much we rely on them.
I already live in a similar way I call it getting out of my comfort zone.I don't use heating or cooling unless the temp goes over 40 I don't drive due to a medical condition and the walking i do every day to the bus stop plus carrying the shopping back is something none of my neighbours would ever do They drive everywhere even short distances.I also garden and cook from scratch which is considered quaint.I don't make all my own clothes but i know how to Getting out of your comfort zone is the best antidepressant I've lost a child, been homeless and know what despair looks like but as humans this is normal Just open that front door and do it
install a stepcounter on your phone. set it reasonably low and DO NOT EVER MISS A DAY. im on my 3rd year of it, i have it set at 6k but iv slowly built up, i now average about 15k. its been a life changer. its like a game. never been healthier.
Brilliant! Very clear and practical advises. I got saturated by the experts telling me what I should do but not HOW I should do. Thank you, your work is a real treasure !
I do this type of thing. I do not normally sit on a sofa and I do not eat junk food except for the rare slice of pizza. Pizza is no longer as good as it was when I was growing up in New York City in the 50's anyway. I am a slim and energetic 79 year old. I actually have not had a TV for many decades. Obviously, I do watch UA-cam but I am usually doing stuff while I listen. I grow an organic garden and I make a lot of art.
Very interesting. Why are you telling us all this stuff about yourself? We don't know you so what do you have to gain from this confession? I am just interested in people's behavior. It's amazing , really, what social media can do to some of us. 😮😮
@@Lolipop59Because that's what people do. We express our thoughts. And you certainly got interested, because you read what he wrote. And, if you knew him already, he wouldn't have to say.😂
I also think things are not as good as they were in the past. It's a combination of two things. Food isn't really what it was and, being old, my senses of smell and taste are slowly fading.😂 I prefer a hammock. I feel uncomfortable on a sofa.
My doctor told me I needed to drive my car more or the battery is going to die. lol. I always walk to the store and walk every morning. I also never take our elevator. I live on the second floor and never take it. Always the stairs. I live in a senior community and it’s scary all the people here who need walkers and canes. In fact I’m going to pause this and go for another walk. I try to do 5000 steps a day and I’m short 200. I’m 77 and love your channel.
I see it everyday, my neighbour has someone to tend the garden, someone that brings her groceries, someone that cleans their windows, someone that cleans the oven, never walks anywhere and looking at their frame they are very unfit unhealthy and way overweight. Sad to see and I cant un-see it.
Wow!!! This is so wonderful! You are so right! We want comfort and ease! I need to listen to this every single day! I started with cleaning my room and now I am going to go clean the ducks pond and will keep going from there. Thank you Rangan I really needed this today ❤
This is exactly what people need to hear. This is what many inclusive myself easily fall into but there is no growth or health in stagnant and comfortable living. We must learn to thrive with happiness of having the gift of life and in the month of thanksgiving all the more!
This is such an eye-opener! Dr. Chatterjee’s perspective on comfort vs. discomfort really resonates. Sometimes the ‘easy way’ doesn’t bring the best outcomes, and we could all benefit from a little healthy discomfort in our lives!
Thanks Dr, from now, I’m ruling my sleeping habit and exercise, I eat healthy food . I al ready quit sugar and tomatoes I feel much better for my joints and thank you who ever recommended this video ❤
To cut costs of the NHS Tai Chi should be taught in every school and be readily available for older people. Totally agree about the stairs and walking as much as possible.
100% we were made to move, approaching my 60s now and ride my bike everywhere when I can. I live in Canada so it's not easy but we have buses and I can take a cab in emergencies. They talk about all this in Canada but several buildings don't even have accessible stairs or bike racks. For me, I love to be able to get around on my own steam where possible and it's how I love living! Helps me to justify sitting on my arse later. 😸Keep up the great podcasting!
I go to a gym class, I don't really like it, but I feel better once I've done it. To ensure I go, I go with a friend. I can't let her down, so I have to go 😂

Incidental habits instead of reaching for the phone. Could be sketching, breathing, noticing nature. I work out each day but it’s not the only thing we can do for ourselves. Talking to someone. Anything that doesn’t contribute to zombie syndrome
I read your book of how to make disease disappear, having this knowledge is both a pro and a con. It is wonderful to know what we can do, but its shocking to see what we have become BY CHOICE. When you mentioned that people used to enjoy a peach for a summer dessert so clearly demonstrated how insane things have become. Thank you for your work and trying to make the world better for us all.
I been using my coffee making time to do some of the things you mentioned. You mentioned it a few years ago. Sometimes I dance or lift my 3 pound weights, something just to be moving. A sit a lot. I’m an artist so I draw all day (retired) so throughout my day I will stop and go for a walk just to move.
Once again Dr Chatterjee u have blessed us with profound information that makes looking after ourselves a must ☺️do we want to be healthy and therefore happy ⭐️❣️⭐️taking control being the captain of our ship ☘️☘️☘️I am grateful ur an inspiration in our world we are all need to be reminded self care the no 1 🌼🌼🌼🌼
Your tips are amazing. I'm only halfway with your talk and I went and made my daily cup of turmeric and almond milk tea. With immediate effect I've taken your advice. While waiting for my tea to simmer I did some stretches and squats. I will do this daily. Suddenly I have time for my daily stretches. Even though just a few minutes at a time. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so much Dr Rangan your podcasts are always so inspiring and informative 👌🏻 thanks for sharing your valuable time and knowledge blessings your way 🌻
set goals, short and long term goals, be as fit as possible, short yourself out, know yourself from A to Z, do what U like if not, change, and have a innercircle as small as possible, life is so demanding of finding out who U are, what U want And do something with your emotional pain, what hurt you in the past, talk, write, do something to release your pain, that are processes, its not be learned at school or from your parents, but once U figured this out, everything will become much easier. if not, the headache in life will come to U, in addictions of drugs, games, sex, or being busy all the time with work, sports, until boom, burnout or worse. Thats not what U wanted, but when this happen, U have to change and firts look in the mirror and deep into your heart, open it, and let the pain out. Love your vid´s btw, you are amazing and love the content 💖
I’m learning to keep to myself, rather than give all my love away and hope for an external validation of who I am. I know this is not physical aspect but internally I need to safeguard myself. I’m learning to move in my own harmony. Harmony being my word for guiding myself. I ask myself “ is this being true to my Harmony? . Sometimes it clicks in after the fact but I’m learning and noticing. Thank you for inspiring us all x
Great advice! At 73 here in the Netherlands I ride my bike daily summer and winter for at least 25 miles. I will never buy an electric bike. Even more nobody will pass me by with one 😂 Besides that I am a fanatic solo diver and plan to go on for some years!
I recently moved to a flat with no lift, I don't drive and have a walk uphill from the bus... I go shopping, carry my shopping, and cook food that I know what's going into it... have trimmed some belly fat and looking at getting fitter with my new home... oh my happiness has gone up... of course I can do hills and stairs... understand that not everyone can xx
People seek that comfort due to stress. Let's be clear. That stress can be better dealt with by the government creating jobs, financial prosperous policies, supporting the health care system.
Interesting coming across this video. One thing I do is when it’s cold, instead of walking to the train station in the morning, I have a four-minute sprint.
I've been thinking, my overweight is from being wealthy. I'm not rich, don't get me wrong, but already pretty comfortable! Instead of driving to lessons 12 mins each way, I'm walking 30 mins each way. I apply karma yoga and rest my case on having done my best and that's what I'm telling my team. Soon we will move from a flat to a house w a garden and I have plans! Growing foods! Spending time outside a lot! The house itself will be a lot more work and I'm looking forward to it ❤
if i dont do anything 2-3 days in a row i feel how my body is sickened by the pause... after i get back to chores and work i feel great again... gotta see my family's face everytime i take the stairs and they are on the escalator... im sad they dont realise u need to get out of your comfort zone to be healthy.... my mom has diabetes for a decade i ask her move do something... she plays games on her tablet...:(
My husband lived just two months after we had a stair lift installed. It’s still here BUT l won’t use it, l’ll,stick with the stairs as long as l have legs. Thank you for these very wise words.
Dr Rangan, This is a great advise, I have done the stairs - parkrun, marathon, park far and walk to the my destination. I am challenging myself to other activity such as Bachata. I have an active lifestyle, but much social life. It is very isolating. I also keep yoga mat out not roll up so that it reminds me to do yoga and mediation everyday.
Some years ago I lived in NZ in the mountains - there was 16 km to the food shop (PAK'nSAVE) we walked every day via a small footpath. BTW: In our house no Cell phone working (VHF-Radio and Sat. Phone did). Internet was only a wifi from the local gasstation.
That's amazing 🤩 Dr Ranjan,,,,your 5 minutes exercise is rewarded with your favourite coffee.Loved it .Attaching a new habit to your existing habit of coffee.
You are 100% on the mark, and I’d argue just scratched the surface (in terms of how we have adapted (rapid change is incongruous with how we evolve which is infinitely slower). I’ve followed you for a while and have enjoyed listening to the guest experts that you bring to this show, and I have a suggestion for another (not affiliated, just a fan). If I somehow missed him as a guest forgive me, but have you seen psychiatrist/trained yogi Dr. Alok Kanojia (aka Dr. K or HealthyGamerGG)? I believe his target audience is young Gen Z males (or gamers); however, I most definitely do not fit that demographic (late Gen-X female, non-gamer, healthcare professional, mom, non-gamer, taking a professional sabbatical to be at home with kids), and yet, much of his advice resonates with me still. I definitely think you two could have a good conversation that would be meaningful for your audience.
No thanks I don't do any of that ,I grow my own food and dry some for winter I only eat what I produce, no TV no computer, noooo junk food ,no processed food only home made food walk a lot ,thank you my beautiful earth and for the abundance.
I have always lived my life adding in uncomfortable things. In retirement, it’s so much easier to “sit and scroll”. There’s something about doing something I DON’T want to do daily! It gives myself some respect and admiration.
Respectfully it us not that wechave to introduce comfort intobour lives; rather it is about sitting woth the discomfort we avoid through all the distractions
I'm uncomfortable all the time, from PAIN! Pain Spinal Arthritis, Arthritis in my shoulders hands/wrist, hip, knee ,had a knee replacement, have Scoliosis (30 °,35°,44°). Some days I can barely make it through the grocery store(and that's leaning over on the cart and walking slowly). I often go on "auto pilot" while driving 😊 I have set my phone calender once or twice but the notification sound is the same as the rest, so I completely missed it and I have no reason to check my email every day. I can't think there's anything I would "enjoy" every that could be consider exercise related. Yoga, Meditation aren't worth consideration
In the past and because of ill health beyond my control, I have had 6 fractures ( 7, if you count 2 toe fractures). Yet, I exercise daily and use the stairs at home, even though my husband recently felt he needed a stairlift after his own injury.
Introducing discomfort specifically activates part of the brain called Anterior cingulate cortex, which has many positive effects on health and cognitive function.

Is that exercise?
Very True - No Car, No TV, No Ppl - only animals and Nature - pure luxury ...
Thank you Rangan
I really needed this today ❤
This is exactly what people need to hear. This is what many inclusive myself easily fall into but there is no growth or health in stagnant and comfortable living. We must learn to thrive with happiness of having the gift of life and in the month of thanksgiving all the more!
This is such an eye-opener! Dr. Chatterjee’s perspective on comfort vs. discomfort really resonates. Sometimes the ‘easy way’ doesn’t bring the best outcomes, and we could all benefit from a little healthy discomfort in our lives!
Doctor you have opened many eyes" no pain no gain" I'm strong believer
Your voice & english is super clear and easy to understand even only audio, thankyou
I go to a gym class, I don't really like it, but I feel better once I've done it. To ensure I go, I go with a friend. I can't let her down, so I have to go 😂
Very beautiful beneficial educational speech. Thanks a lot.I will try one or two to start.
Very sensible advice!! Thank you! I watched half and it's 10pm in Singapore so I'm closing my laptop and going to sleep!! Thank you! :)

Wow Rangan! I think I was so ready to hear this. A big lightbulb moment for me.❤
Incidental habits instead of reaching for the phone.
Thank you 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so much Dr Rangan your podcasts are always so inspiring and informative 👌🏻 thanks for sharing your valuable time and knowledge blessings your way 🌻
It works! New rule: 1.don't say later, 2. Don't say: it can wait till tomorrow.
Dr, Will definitely plan now to move my body more, welcoming discomfort of not turning channels on TV, like I do, thank you so so much.
set goals, short and long term goals, be as fit as possible, short yourself out, know yourself from A to Z, do what U like if not, change, and have a innercircle as small as possible, life is so demanding of finding out who U are, what U want
And do something with your emotional pain, what hurt you in the past, talk, write, do something to release your pain, that are processes, its not be learned at school or from your parents, but once U figured this out, everything will become much easier.
if not, the headache in life will come to U, in addictions of drugs, games, sex, or being busy all the time with work, sports, until boom, burnout or worse.
Love ur channel! Much love from Sweden 🇸🇪
So there is ancient wisdom in the old adage, 'killing with kindness'. 😱
I understood this long back and I have been doing these.I am so happy that I did Let's spread your wonderful session to create awareness for good.
Great advice! At 73 here in the Netherlands I ride my bike daily summer and winter for at least 25 miles. I will never buy an electric bike. Even more nobody will pass me by with one 😂 Besides that I am a fanatic solo diver and plan to go on for some years!
You have inspired me to start doing a morning exercise routine before I do anything else.
I have taken the stairs up to the fourth floor for at least 30 years and i am 82 now 😊
So true,Dr Ranjan you are absolutely correct in every way.
No Doctor ever tells about all this ..Thank you so much.Warm Regards.
Im a better human a better doctor a better mother when I have some time for myself. I love this 1 ❤
I recently moved to a flat with no lift, I don't drive and have a walk uphill from the bus... I go shopping, carry my shopping, and cook food that I know what's going into it... have trimmed some belly fat and looking at getting fitter with my new home... oh my happiness has gone up... of course I can do hills and stairs... understand that not everyone can xx
This was wonderful and I appreciate your personal examples. Discomfort creates resilience and strength
We tend to create and imagine problems in our head only.True , exactly you are correct 💯 Percent.❤❤
Great enthusiasm and passion for improving other peoples lives. Good work - thank you
Very motivational video. I keep walking in the morning.
Amazing and practical insights! Thanks
Very motivating
I will try the 5 mins routine
Thank you 💐
What about the elderly who have mobility problems?
People seek that comfort due to stress. Let's be clear. That stress can be better dealt with by the government creating jobs, financial prosperous policies, supporting the health care system.
I love the 5 minute concept tied to a regular task.
You are such a beautiful soul. Thank you DR
Goodness! Lots of good advice but poor Jim being talked at!!
Thank you Jim, consistently making it makes it automatic, goes into our subconscious.Love ❤️ you Jim.
Why is heart surgery scam is very popular in india..Please watch video. Thanks for your help...
Yes, washing dishes, making rotis, I guess, for me, as my cook is taking off for a few days.
I do parkrun every Saturday ❤❤
Some years ago I lived in NZ in the mountains - there was 16 km to the food shop (PAK'nSAVE) we walked every day via a small footpath.
BTW: In our house no Cell phone working (VHF-Radio and Sat. Phone did). Internet was only a wifi from the local gasstation.
That's amazing 🤩 Dr Ranjan,,,,your 5 minutes exercise is rewarded with your favourite coffee.Loved it .Attaching a new habit to your existing habit of coffee.
This is ace 100 percent xx
I walk 15k steps daily my neighbors see me and ask "do you need a RIDE"....no thanks! Start date 9/1/2024.
Thanks for sharing. I've been doing exercises in my pajamas, and it works! Please talk to Dr. William Li about fibromyalgia. Thanks!
My rule: "always take the stairs and take always 2 steps on the stairs"! (daily strength training)
U are an old fool.
Super point ! Thank u !!
Respectfully it us not that wechave to introduce comfort intobour lives; rather it is about sitting woth the discomfort we avoid through all the distractions
Doctor, I want to practice living as if the power is out😀get up early and go to bed early, brush my teeth twice a day, and take cold showers!
Thank you Dr I agree with you completely ❤❤
There is now a very blurred line between convenience and laziness!
I often go on "auto pilot" while driving 😊
I have set my phone calender once or twice but the notification sound is the same as the rest, so I completely missed it and I have no reason to check my email every day.
I can't think there's anything I would "enjoy" every that could be consider exercise related.
Yoga, Meditation aren't worth consideration
You could start by lifting your own sports drinks and cat litter at the store instead of ordering them for delivery people to have injuries
In the past and because of ill health beyond my control, I have had 6 fractures ( 7, if you count 2 toe fractures). Yet, I exercise daily and use the stairs at home, even though my husband recently felt he needed a stairlift after his own injury.
Because the majority of people are slayed with relying with conveniency
Introducing discomfort specifically activates part of the brain called Anterior cingulate cortex, which has many positive effects on health and cognitive function.
