I am 86 yrs old male, I have never developed muscle mass as I put more emphasis on socializing, brain stimulation, and life enjoyment as priority. I have never been in a gym, What keep me alive is social dancing. I still dance 4 to 5 times a week, 2 to 3 hrs. I dance quick step, Viennese waltz, foxtrot, tango, slow waltz, rumba, cha cha, samba, salsa, bachata, west coast swing, hustle, Argentine tango. To dance all of these stimulate my brain and give some sort of physical exercise. Of course I watch my diet.

There is a lot to be said for this. They say North Americans do not really enjoy life that they live to work and maybe all these regimens are needed. I am in my 60s lift weights eat well and agree with a lot of what the doctor says but if you look at the blue zones of the world they are not all resistance training and eating tons of protein, they mainly eat well, move a lot and enjoy life well into their late 90s early 100s

It feels like overhearing two experts on the sidelines of a conference having lunch. It's a delight that we, non-expert viewers, are treated to it 'in the raw' and not-watered-down. Super respectful and trusting of the creator(s) to infer, by putting it up unadulterated, 'You guys can handle this - I know you are smart enough to get the gist of our conversation and do your own research on terms and references you aren't familiar with'. It's one of many aspects that makes this UA-cam channel so refreshing.

It’s hard to hear how this 1 (or 2) things (working out with weights or ‘going to the gym’) is the way to longevity for EVERYONE. There seams to be some important background wisdom missing before we start to consider if ‘heavy lifting’ is needed or not. I’m going to have to keep on listening to all these amazing cutting edge researchers that we are blessed to have with us on this wonderful planet for more background before rearranging my life around lifting, gyms and resistant training at the level that’s suggested here. It’s a great time to be alive. THANK YOU, YOU 2, FOR DEDICATING YOUR LIFE TO PROVIDING ACCESS FOR OTHERS TO LIVE A LIFE WORTH LIVING!!!!!

    • @cdotrdotsmith
      @cdotrdotsmith Місяць тому

She never says heavy lifting...what the premise of science they are working off of is that muscle is an organ and needs use...most people in this space are doing body weight to build skeletal muscle....
She never mentions getting You Ferigno, Arnold or Lee Haney muscled

    • @mklarch
      @mklarch Місяць тому

@cdotrdotsmith maybe not AND she's pushing an agenda. I don't doubt the idea of needing to address muscle loss. And maybe the pair pressure of the "exersize movement" of the 70s is being triggered in me. But if the message smells like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like as duck; well, you know...
There is NO one way to optimal health. And her message is clear - GO TO THE GYM 3 TIMES A WEEK.
Sorry. Not buying it. Like I said, there's some unsaid truths that are missing in this interview.

Totally disagree w/ Dr Lyon’s suggested approach to isolation muscle group exercises.
Look to the healthiest elderly athletes, with great strength, great power, clear minds, and long life. Life long martial artists.
Many of the practitioners are in their 80s and 90s.
They do not have much noticeable muscle mass, but they have great power. They are very flexible. Great memory. Great endurance. Little to no known disease.
“Exercise” is a by product of the whole body and mind training, with little to no isolation training, and almost in total body incorporation.
These masters also know that one adjusts what they are doing and how they are doing through their life and aging.
These movements are probably more closely resembling ground based whole body movement/exercises, minus the learning of martial arts education and application. All of this is also utilizing brain-body connection throughout their lives.
Using mechanical tools in gyms never replicate the natural movements that the human body is designed for.

At minute 21:15, the question is asked, "why do people train with less intensity as they get older". I've spent many years in the gym and have a chronological age of 74. This question is easy to answer. Low levels of sex hormones and/or thyroid hormones.
On the upside, vanity plays a big part in this situation too! And no, for the most part, you do not need exogenous hormone therapy. Just intent, focus and consistency. Never discount the power of the mind.

Most elderly people have problems getting up off the floor. As a child you spend a lot of time on the floor, adults do not.
Doing yoga / stretching exercises on the floor can improve balance, mobility, flexibility and the ability to get up and down..
Just getting up and down to the floor in a controlled manner is difficult for many older adults.
Play with your children on the floor. Bend over, get down and pull weeds in your garden. Play with a pet on the floor.
The more effort you make to work on balance and flexibility will pay dividends as you age.

They get results fast and strength builds rather quickly, but I always start them where they are at in their health and strength.
I work with only with machines and weights only I do none of that other Boot Camp stuff but more importantly, I teach them how to feed those muscles and how to use nutrients to get the fan off reduce inflammation heal the gut, and feed those muscles and brain. It’s pretty much of an all inclusive course that I offer. Thanks for this great conversation. She’s great! No disrespect, but I understood many years ago that skeletal muscle is an organ, not only responsible for mobility, but also necessary for myriad other processes in the body. For that matter, bone is another organ in the body as it produces red blood cells for starters. Fascia is another organ system. I understood many years ago that the fat storage system is in organ responsible for fuel exchanges, insulation, etc.
I'm a retired emergency registered nurse. During my "Tour of Duty" I taught myself things that I never learned in University. For instance, I taught myself how to identify lung cancer by using my nose. There is a particular smell in the breath of somebody with lung cancer. Virtually every doctor that I worked with did not use their noses to identify pathologies. These are things that I taught myself over my many years in the trade. I could identify if somebody was suffering from an E coli infection just by walking in the room and breathing in. There's a particular scent a person in hyperosmolar nonketotic syndrome posesses. There is also a particular feel of the skin.
I learned to ask patients where they felt the stimulus for their coughs. If they said lungs, that was one thing. If they said they felt it in their throat, that was another. These questions were never asked by the doctors. Think that the only way to identify bacterial meningitis is with a lumbar puncture and assessment of neck muscles and a few other common assessments? Hardly! I won't get into it because it's rather complex, but there's a particular type of muscular tremor that I found classic to people suffering from bacterial meningitis. I taught myself these things and more. I graduated top of my class as a student nurse, graduating with a 4.0 GPA, and yet I knew even back then that there was so much more that wasn't being taught and that I had to teach myself outside of the box. Many shamans possessed these abilities. Ask a very experienced baker when they know that the yeasted dough is ready to be baked. They can feel it with their hands, and see it with their eyes.
Understanding the limitations of Western medicine, one can surmise early on that fat is an organ storage system. Learning to think outside of the box is important in any endeavor. Sadly, most doctors learn how NOT to think for themselves. For instance, statins are still being widely prescribed for this reason. Non thinking doctors are not seeing the information right in front of them. A person who is metabolically stable possesses a particular generalized scent. A metabolically unstable person possesses another. Blood work simply confirmed what I already knew.
I do believe that a lot of healthcare workers within fundamental medicine would clearly understand what I am talking about.

When I work out, there are a bunch of geezers. Nine out of ten simple don't work very hard - not nearly as hard as they could. It's like they're interested in saying they go to the gym but aren't really willing to work. I'm not sure if they feel entitled to take it easy or if they are simply unfamiliar with how to work out. Maybe it's something else, but it is striking.

I hope u will consider my question...
Other than light exercise during the week, I weight lift 4 solid hrs, 1 day a week.
R u saying that will really diminish my workout benefits because I'm only weight lifting 1 day a week?
I do medium weight and high reps due to injuries.
I always exercise till failure, and I honestly increase by 5 reps every week.
But, I'm only using 25 lbs at present for each arm and 110 lbs for legs, and as I increase by 5 reps every week, and reach 80 reps with arms, I have to increase the weight by 2 1/2 lbs, each arm, approx once a month.
Then my reps drop way down and I work my way back up to 80 reps again, etc, etc.
R u saying I should break up this workout into 2 or 3 days a week for better health benefits?
Definitely appreciate ur info, always watched u on PBS.
    Thank u. 👍

Over exercising is worse than not exercising in terms of mortality, the point is finding the sweet spot. Depending on your workout once or twice a week is probably most optimal. There was a new study that daily weight lifting is detrimental than beneficial, gotta look it up.

Excellent start. Excellent effort. Good for you.
One example that has been suggested by a very good trainer…
Do 30 -40 hours 3 days per week. Every other day.
You will get recovery time which is very important.
And make sure you get a decent night’s sleep every night.
Watch what happens over a period of 6-8 weeks. ..
Listening to Dr. Gabrielle Lions regularly will give you plenty of good information.

Email, text, tweet or phone your favorite producer of poison and let them know consumers want less salt, oils and sugars in their products.

Most people who have been training hard with weights in their youth would still continue to train as hard as they age if pain from injuries and degeneration from loss of cartilage didn’t occur. The loss of testosterone coupled with these issues plays a critical role in losing muscle mass for a vast majority of trainers.
