Working from the inside, this is correct. If you apply for any kind of funding for the arts or community projects you have an actual tick box segment for diversity and inclusion and the form tells you that you must have a majority of them fulfilled to qualify. Besides this, your proposal also has to explain why it's good, not for the sake of it being a good and well written masterpiece or anything, but why it's good for fighting racism, sexism, trans/ homophobia and make minorities look equal to the "stereotypes" of previous movies/ games/ theatre project. Bare in mind that these stereotypes exist because they're relatable and successful, so by default, changing everything about those is a guaranteed flop of a project as the form is quite literally telling you to be as unrelatable and un-stereotypical as possible.

I grew up with 3 brothers and it frustrates me to no end to see these tiny gals beating the mess outta these huge guys when I know full well all they have to do is just grab her and push her down.
It bothers me; women would have to be highly trained and SMART fighters (with a little luck sprinkled in) to win hand-to-hand against a men like that, and the men would need to be dumb, clumsy, and have zero fighting experience.

It all went wrong when nothing worked for her, because I was simply stronger. And I'm just ordinary - I don't do any special exercises or the like. 'You're making me look bad' she said. Agreed! It's frustrating to no end. When I was growing up with my brother he used to practice WWF wrestling moves on me... I was power bombed, suplexed, boston crabbed (that one actually is pretty painful) and at one time we thought he might've fractured my knee when he did the Ken Shamrock ankle lock. I loved every minute of it because I got to spend time with my big brother and I could take a bump pretty well... but I'm under no illusion that if I trained really hard I could beat his arse. Men are stronger it's that simple... we will never be truly equal so let's stop trying. Instead let's get creative and actually do something interesting!

My problem with this recent trend of "empowered" female characters is that they actually accomplish the exact opposite of what they set out to do, i.e. destroy roles and opportunities for female actors. By "gender swapping" an existing male franchise, they're simply presenting male roles but in a different gender, i.e. it's all about the masculine protagonist, whether he's being depicted in male or female gender. All traces of feminine traits are meticulously scrubbed out of the picture. Hollywood doesn't seem to understand that although men and women are equal, they are NOT the same! Each sex has its own attributes, its own strengths and its own weaknesses. Writing female characters that play men sends the clear message to young girls that they have to be masculine in order to lead and succeed in life. What a boring world, full of just masculine individuals! Way to go Hollywood!

@@harrystyles7466 I don't normally watch this kinda stuff, but this channel seems to be the most popular of its ilk so I thought I'd give it a look after I saw all those advertisements for the 355 awhile back. Drinker makes a lot of good points. He doesn't just talk out of his ass repeating the same schtick over and over like some other would-be independent reviewers do. So I gotta give credit to this channel. It's solid content and there's genuine charisma here. I can see why he is successful.
Moving on to your comment: What exactly qualifies a movie as feminist? Any movie with female protagonist(s)? That doesn't seem discerning enough. A movie can be about mostly women or even only women and not be feminist, surely. Then again what exactly feminist means seems to vary wildly depending on who you ask.
Little Women qualifies? Seriously? I would have just called it a slice of life/drama. What exactly happens in that movie (or even the book that inspired it for that matter) that is feminist? I don't recall any political talking points.
Captain Marvel was a part of a series of movies all contributing to a greater story. All of those movies succeeded. Marvel is a wildly popular brand. To say Captain Marvel succeeded entirely on its own merits... well that just wouldn't be true. Some people were gonna see that movie no matter what. The Marvel fanbase is simply that big.
Never seen Promising Young Woman or Ocean's Eight so I'll take your word for it.
I dunno if tons of movies is accurate? A handful is not a ton. Especially when many of those films are popular for reasons not necessarily related to their tenuous relationship with feminism. Whatever that word means to you specifically.
Having a look around at reviews, it really does look like a lot of movies (and television shows) pushing for diversity and representation have a higher chance to fail. Is that a bad or good thing? What does it mean if it's true? I don't know. I'm interested in seeing what other people are saying though. Which is why I'm here.
I wondered if 355 was actually popular because it was heavily advertised. Seems like all that money spent advertising was wasted because it turns out a lot of people seem to hate it. Like, a lot of people. A whole lot. Yikes.

it's like telling girls that they can't trust their boyfriends, because they're plotting and scheming behind their backs. so by enlarging their field of thought, they learn not to trust men.
funny when some people gather to rate movies only for the presence of visual violence, gore, or sex scenes. subtle message like this should be recognized immediately, and stopped. these movies give bad examples.

The whole "woman beats up a big buff man" doesnt' bother me, as long as SOMETIMES it seems like there is a difficult time. Even with male action heroes they usually come up against a brute or something they have to think smart about.
However what does bother me is these female empowerment movies almost never have a female bad guy, or if they do they present them as tragic, or forced to do it, or such.

I mean, if women are smart they CAN bring a guy down. Jam thumbs in eyes, karate chop the carotid artery, punch the adam's apple, knee to the groin, punch/kick to the liver, etc. Do any of those with full strength, and even a woman can submit a man. The problem is when women in movies get into fights with men that involve BRUTE STRENGTH and they ALWAYS win (without doing any of the above). That is completely unrealistic! Very few women can overpower a man of equal height and weight. Yet movies will have you believe women can easily fight off professional bodyguards or soldiers 50 pounds heavier than them. It's really silly and it always takes me right out of the movie.

@@jaredjones1752 I don't think it's any more silly then Jacky Chan or most bonds doing it, but it's not all they do is the problem imo. Where as with women it often is all they do. None of this stuff, men or women, is "realistic"

    • @alexhussinger3550
      @alexhussinger3550 2 роки тому +31

What makes this extra dumb is that its already set up to be a good fight. We generally like to see heros overcoming stacked odds to win. "Man, this guy looks like he can kick the shit out of our heroine! How is she going to win? Is she going to run? Fight dirty? Fight smart? Is she gonna . . . oh, she just kicked him once and won. . . Yay?"
A better for a story for this kind of movie would be the Strong Female Character(s) taking down big bad guy at the end of act 2, only to realize that said bad guy's Female subordinate/second in command was the real threat and escaped to continue her dastardly plan elsewhere. The heroine's male bosses think this is ridiculous and dismisses the threat, requiring said female character to "go rouge" or whatever, setting up the 3rd act confrontation where it turns out that she was right.
You get a story about not underestimating women, both as allies and adversaries, which is a lot better of a story than the typical "Smash the patriarchy/Men are Evil".

    - The problem is that neo-feminism has regressed the concept of woman to "people with vaginas" (not even kidding) and this narrow vision of their role in society\ forgetting what makes something female attractive (femininity) really hungs up creativity.
    - Plus all the things you said in the comments, I haven't read anything outrageous yet.

Not all women are feminine, or at least not feminine to the same extent. Women can have a masculine side too. Of course nothing over the top, but you get what I mean. I don’t mind female warriors as long as they are having super powers anyway (fiction) or are naturally very tall and Bulky (Gina Carano made a decent female warrior). I agree that it’s often too forced tho.
But we shouldn’t play SJWs and get mad whenever a female character isn’t porttayed like we want her to. Same goes for men.
A female character can be more feminine or more masculine, in both cases it’s possible to write her well. Sadly most male characters are also written poorly.
But also some movies are intended to be over the top and comedic, funny. Like Kick Ass. It’s not supposed to be realistic and the audience knows it.

      - I got over-simplistic but the core of what I said is exactly that. You need good writing to make any character good but writing female ones just has so many hurdles that it's almost impossible (thanks to SJWs).
      - Hitgirl is the best female superhero Hollywood has ever produced. Chloe-Grace Moretz played the character better than the original in the comic (imo).
      - Yes, you also need good actors, make Brie Larson play The Little Match Girl and you will see cheers and waves in the audience when she finally freezes to death. 😭

Later, as "The Bride", she convincingly slices and dices her way to avenge herself on Bill. What really struck me was the brutal training sessions, as she slowly earned the respect of Pai Mei. But Drinker 's point is that when 100 pound women out-muscle their bigger, heavier, and more muscular male opponents, it takes the fantasy element to a whole other level. It's on par with having Sean Connery's Bond flipping Odd Job over his shoulder like a rag doll. Instead, Bond had to use his knowledge of electrical current to take him down.

The reason Mulan was a believable heroine in her action scenes in 98 was because she fought smart. She'd use physics and logic to fight her opponents. Going after weak points, using angles through her enhanced flexibility, tricking people into thinking she was harmless to gain an advantage, the list goes on. And that movie was animated.

Agreed. Atomic Blonde for me stands up as a shining example of what female-led action films like the 355 SHOULD be.
An original story with convincing and committed performances from the leads. Additionally, having the guys behind John Wick directing it is pretty crucial - as it meant we got action sequences that felt real and believable, with more brutal, longer takes that took full advantage of Theron's months of prep for the role.
Most importantly for me though, the movie didn't try to bullshit the audience with some insanely overpowered female star, who easily takes down men twice her size and weight without sustaining any real injury.
Instead we got Charlize Theron narrowly escaping with her life from fights with her more challenging opponents. She got the absolute shit kicked out of her, but through her grit and technique, she was able to come out on top.
Also I think it's worth noting that the film was smart enough to provide valid reasons for her being able to beat her tougher foes. This was because she balanced the fight by maiming them with gunshot wounds or slashes from a knife - allowing her to over come her size disadvantage.
This is it's greatest strength in my opinion - the film always manages to find realistic and believable ways to make Theron's engagements balanced, so that her winning doesn't require the suspension of disbelief at all.
Indeed, the fact that Theron's character gets so badly beaten endears her to the audience - by depicting her as flawed and realistic. By using her ingenuity to prevail in unfavourable situations, her victories are therefore satisfying to watch unfold, and they feel like a true struggle.
The end result is a film with a truly engaging and likeable protagonist, who succeeds in being an aspirational yet authentic role model for women - a success that films like The 355 and Charlie's Angels could only fucking dream of recreating.

+Aneurin Price Idk, as someone who trained BJJ and MMA, most of the movie fight scenes looky way too funny to me, especially in movies where the stuntman are obviously jumping around to sell the idea the girl twice as small as them can kick their asses.

When I saw the preview in theaters, I remember thinking that a movie set in The Revolutionary War about the actual woman agent with the code name 355 would be interesting enough to get me to part with my money, unlike the movie shown in the preview.

Me explaining this movie to my parents: It's called 'The 355.'
      Them: Why that title?
Me: Back in the Revolutionary War there was a female spy whose cover was '355' and we still don't know who she was to this day.
Them: Oh, so it was a historical based movie.
Me: No it was about female spies in the modern era.

Literally working on a fiction book with a character in it called 355, set during The American Revolution. She turns out in my story to be an Irish born young woman who came to America to live with her Uncle Hericules. She works in a coffeehouse frequented by British officers, she pretends to be a deaf mute to get intel.
The main characters are two formerly estranged Irish American brothers with who become privateers, sent down to Bermuda to steal all the post's gunpowder for Washington's Army. But other American privateers and a Royal Navy frigate are hot on their trail...
