  • Red Notice, starring The Rock, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds, offers a breezy comedy adventure with a cast of likeable actors doing what they do best. But it all feels a bit safe, lazy and predictable, like there's something missing. Join me as I take a closer look.

Took you long enough. This movie didn't know what it was, an action adventure bromance Indiana Jones wanna be. It was funny, but in an "oh that was a chucke" while looking up from the game I was playing.
Ideal piece of disposable adventure is exactly right. What Netflix is known for.

I used to binge watch lockup and even the highest level prisons let inmates shave but the razor blade security differs. The main way to make a shank in peison is to melt your bic razor blade into a toothbrush. And if you watch the channels of guys who just got out of prison they show you how they used bic razors to cook prison meals.

A little variety would be nice. I used to watch a lot of independent, foreign and art films. After a while, I'd find myself craving a Van Damme or Arnie film. If marvel films are big, dumb and du jour, then bland mediocrity loses a bit of its joy. If your diet is monotonous, something that would otherwise have a lot of appeal, becomes samey because it hits most of the same notes. It speaks to the fatigue when you're forced to praise a film just for not clubbing the audience protractedly with 'the message'.

And yeah Ryan's aptitude to deliver lines with a joking intonation without it being comedic is kinda ridiculous, Wonder Woman and the Rock were just being themselves in the movie. I have a theory: Red Notice was actually written by an AI and was the initial test run for future AI-written movies.
There's literally a front end accessible through an internal URL that gives you a page with checkboxes, radio buttons, drop-downs and sliders, connected to an AWS-based database and machine learning setup. An exec sits down in front of it, selects things like Genre: Action Movie, Subgenre: Heist, Number of Characters: 3, amount of THE MESSAGE: 10% and other parameters, hits the Submit button, and minutes later this tripe is spat out complete with minute scene details and suggested actors for each role. It gets emailed to all the parties involved, and we're off to make a movie.
The feedback is then gathered and fed back to the AI to improve the next script that it will spit out. You don't need much more to get consoomers to consoom.
All that said, while Red Notice was a paper-thin forgettable BS, it was a perfect Friday takeout movie. Put it on, pour a beer, bite into a piece of pizza, shut off your brain for a bit and it works.
At least it was better than the Army of the Dead.

I have long been convinced that _this_ is how producers assemble summer hits each year. Ingredients:
      1) some Baciata overtone probably copy-pasted from the previous year, with possible minor tempo changes
      2) complete word salad of sun/beach/love/sex tropes randomly composed according to a machine learned pattern, as lyrics,
      3) pick some young and good looking named artist from a scored database to "sing" the song (voice is super auto-tuned so it doesn't even matter whether he/she can actually sing it anyway)
      4) add in a a video featuring said artist not dressed very much (don't forget to add multiple semi-naked dancers, if the named artist is male and thus cannot take that role himself)
      - and there you have it. Instant smash hit.

It kept me entertained for the runtime and didn't really leave much of an impression afterwards. At least it didn't completely kill my enthusiasm for a previously beloved franchise like a certain movie by a certain director of Breaking Bad's "Fly" fame did.

The acting is impeccable and other than the two guys who fight all the time, all of the characters act in a way that seems reasonably realistic for their character arcs. I did appreciate that it wasn't trying to jam THE MESSAGE down my throat (aside from the typical Hollywood feminist message of a 120lb girl being able to kick any man's ass: because women!), but it was bland and just sort of average. When they're not trying to force "the message" down everyone's throats they're making films ass-backwards.
Instead of: I've written this great story, now we need to carefully choose the best team of people for it's transfer to the silver screen.
We have: Here's this silver screen, so once we hire some 'stars' to put on it we'll come up with a bit of nonsense to justify their presence.
I watched RLM's reView of the original Total Recall. That exists for basically the same reason, seemingly a bit of cheap entertainment. But where this film is at best harmless nonsense, Total Recall is actually a great film the makers put everything they could in to making as good as they could.
This is at best what I'd have once called a 'Friday Night Film'. It's been a long week, you're tired, you still want to go out with your friends, but frankly putting any effort in to the task is too much. So you all end up eating at Pizza Slut because it's next to the cinema, followed by watching the lowest common denominator film you can all agree on with minimal effort.

It washes over you, and when it's done, you'll have a hard time remembering what happened within fifteen minutes. It's a live action cartoon, where the laws of physics, logic or even basic story telling are sacrificed to see (The Rock, Gal, Ryan) do something stylishly in an interesting setting. Trying to analyze all its faults is an exercise in futility, because who cares? It was neat to watch, and no animals were hurt in the making of this film.

It reminds me of Spy vs. Spy vs Spy back in the day. Once the black and white spy jokes started to get stale, they brought in a gray lady spy to wring a little extra life out of a dying idea. Naturally, the lady spy always got the better of the other two. That wasn't down to "the message", but rather the fact that it was tacked on and didn't quite fit the original idea. I think this is often the case in Hollywood movies, they're looking to add this or that to the movie and don't bother to fit it in properly, but just slap it on there.

I was really thinking the same thing about half-way through, but when they revealed that Gadot was actually working with Dwayne Johnson, then that idea kinda drifted away. If Johnson had always been helping her and pulling his punches, then I can somewhat believe Gadot would beat up Reynolds, the (established in story) violence adverse nerd. However, there is some real dissonance when he is a near expert fighter beating up the guards at the prison. Which one is he, competent or not? At the point of the reveal it went from this is some stupid "women can do anything" plot to throwing my hands up in annoyance and going, "I guess."

Meh... Remember she is working with The Rock the whole time so that is why she is always "one step ahead" since she knows their plans in advance. Its annoying in the movie but is "makes sense" near the end when you find that out. What bothered me was the INTERPOL agent chick that just seemed to be everywhere all the time with no explanation as to how?
Remember when Ryan and The Rock have to go thru this elaborate series of maneuvers to get into the bad guy's office to get into the secret vault, and then the INTERPOL agent chick just shows up with a gun in their face? How the fuck did she get in there? How did she smuggle a gun in? WTF is happening in this movie?
And then Ryan and The Rock spend days smuggling themselves into Argentina and trek for days in the jungle to find a hidden underground nazi bunker and then when they do.. BOOM! INTERPOL girl shows up again! How the f*ck did she find the place? Gal Gadot found it cause she was working with The Rock, but how did this broad figure it out? My wife really wanted me to watch this movie and I was definitely interested since it had the Rock and Ryan Reynolds and I like them both and I did expected an action comedy that didn't take itself too seriously and it delivered but halfway through I literally turned to my wife and said "I can't watch this any more". It was around the time they broke out of jail and I realized the Rock's character wasn't doing anything a real FBI agent would do in that moment (so he must be a bad guy too) and I sort of just figured out what would happen next and knew how predictable it would be after that.
My wife had already seen the movie multiple times so she wasn't mad that I stopped it, just kind of annoyed because I overanylized it. Part of me think she's righr, but part of me was like... I really have a lot of things I could be doing other than watching this movie to completion. I think I was just annoyed because I felt like I was wasting my time.
This review really captured how i felt about the movie. It wasn't "bad" it wasn't preachy, it was just a movie designed to be a fun rompt. It didn't take itself seriously so there wasn't anything specifically "wrong" with it. It's just...I don't watch a lot of new movies or shows any more, so if I'm going to watch something new, I want it to be "great" not "ok".

The prison seems to have been there for at least decades, but the prisoners are still required to build parts of the outer wall? And Ryan just happens to be put at work building part of that wall at the exact location where they can escape to a helicopter? And prison guards have AK47 and rocket launchers as weapons?

@@a.cobbaut9711 to be fair, it was a russian prison, so it's normal for them to have AKs. Also, it's russian prison so it's not surprising that prison commander in the middle of nowhere knows people who can get him rocket launcher from army warehouse. Last year some retired general stole propellers from his battleship (was caught while replacing them with cheap version). 2 years ago someone have stolen some communication devices from russian nuclear warfare command plane. Few years ago i've heard of the whole battleship stolen from secret harbor when russian army was doing some sort of audit.
And as far as i can remember (watched this movie few months ago) the Interpol lady said something like "i hate you so much that i've pulled some strings to get you to the worst prison i know". And she is a high rank so know people from other organizations and had means to pull this off.
Also this prison was high in the mountains with freezing temperatures so maybe there is a valid reason for constant need of fixing the walls (low budget for modern fix, labor for inmates, high speed of winds increasing the weathering of top of the walls). Siberia is a region where you have huge amplitudes of temperatures: from -60 celsius to +35, frozen patches of land that slide away when it gets warmer so there is space for natural damage.

      - USA justice system (police, prosecutor, judge, everyone involved) murdered obviously innocent black kid just because he was black and they were racist (against black people)
      - Obama, as president, abused power to attack police officer who shot some criminal just because that criminal was black and Obama thoguht it would improve his ratings (at that time it was a hot topic)
      - in Poland the main prosecuter have destroyed career of surgeon, pulled a lot of strings to prosecute him just because of hatred and when that failed he pulled more strings to affect his career
      - Poland as a country is officially stating that human rights are bullshit just because it gives few guys from government an edge in one minor case
      - somewhere in Africa justice system executed goat just because some police officer claimed that this goat is a criminal who happened to be a shaman and turned himself into the goat
      2. Russia is very corrupted in general, has huge area and huge military force. Military equipment missing and sold on black market is nothing unusual. Commander of prison is influencial man so if he wants rocket launcher he can get rocket launcher.
      3. There are very strict prisons all around the world (e.g. USA has Guantanamo where they can abuse human rights all they want), Russia has planty of them and it's not unusal to have heavily armed guards.
      4. In some parts of the world prisoners have to do labor for various reasons. Free manpower, incresing discipline, decreasing strength and resistance, punishment, sadism. Prison from the movie didn't have much to offer in this area so fixing walls in ineffective way seems plausible. Busy and tired prisoners are easier to handle.
This movie has a lot of problems, but these things are just normal.

I really like Ryan’s Reynold’s almost constant streamline of humor, sarcasm and satire, which is an unpopular opinion, but I will agree that he definitely needs to be casted only in roles where his style of acting suits the part, where he can act funny all the time. I’ll also agree that it gets very asinine with repetition, like in Deadpool 2 where he keeps waking back up and proceeds to make another joke every time you think he’s gonna kick the bucket.

I know he’s very famous and in my opinion he’s the perfect Deadpool; I don’t think they could have casted anyone better. However, you can be famous in Hollywood (especially nowadays) without needing to be substantially talented and credible. In fact, there are lots of people in Hollywood that shouldn’t be there because they’re hacks (again, not saying RR is one of them, because at least he worked a lot of important roles and put in effort to get to this point of popularity). Popularity can also be a potential undoing for someone in this sphere if, for example, they start phoning in their acting because they think all of their fans will eat up a half-assed performance.

The difference between a movie like this and movies like Oceans Eleven that make them more plausible, is that Red Notice is a plan full of things that shouldn't work, but luckily they do, whereas in Oceans they spend a considerable amount of time developing their plan and figuring out how it should work, and then almost immediately, something goes wrong with the plan, and they have to adjust their plan or even improvise on the spot to get around it. The latter treats you like you're smart, by showing the characters being smart and allowing you to sit in on their conversations. The former deliberately withholds information only to spring it later and congratulate itself for fooling you. Turns out the bad guy's plan was just to get you to do all the heavy lifting and get all the artifacts into one place in order to swoop in at the last minute and launch its evil plan.
