Yesterday I was given a 1995 Mercury 2.5 litre XRi, EFI, 150 Blackmax. Guy says it’s “blown up”. Brought it home, took off the heads and found #2 piston top starting to disintegrate. Slightly Aluminum scored cylinder. Gonna use little muriatic to clean that up. All cylinders still show some crosshatching. Using your sources mentioned for parts and upgrades. Will “kinda” follow your steps, disassemble, remove scoring, measure and hone, clean, reassemble, delete oil injection system mistake and test. 👍 Your videos are easy to watch and have some good information. Thx for sharing. 😎
@@lancelyons9012 I have it all apart, cleaned up, measured and stacked on the “to be finished after tax season” shelf. A lot of “life” things have taken priority so that’s as far as I’ve gone. I did order the composite reeds kit, delete oil injection kit and a packer kit. I took about 50 photos from when I started and all along thru the disassembly for rebuild reference. Found a bad voltage regulator and what appears to be a bad thermostat. It looks intimidating at first but take your time and document bolts etc in individual baggies. Happy New Year!
I make a 1 inch wide strip of 1/8 in sheet rubber and wrap around rod journal to protect from piston rod hit during piston installation.Saves a crank from accidental rod hit.
Great videos. The plastic shavings you found during tear down lead you to the plastic oil gear on the crank as root cause for the gunk build up and low compression. Does Merc offer a replacement part for the oil gear that is not plastic? Replacing that gear would be a bit tricky since the crank assembly would have to be torn down, certainly involved. Is there is a fix to the root cause? If not it seems that you really have to stay on top of your engine and catch these types of failures before it becomes a real problem.
Dude , that was so unsatisfying ! I was watching for the moment you fired it up for the first time !! I rebuilt an Evinrude 115hp some years back having zero experience in rebuilding engines, and the feeling when that thing fired right up after a couple of turns of the key was amazing !! Still good vids, though.
ive been doing that loctite red on the rod screws lately. had one walk out on me over the summer and trashed a perfectly good 3cyl block (not a motor I built... a customers when testing). I also loctite the gearcase seals to make sure they dont run away. heavy offshore stuff tends to do that. I will say that one piston didn't look too healthy... must've felt better than it looked. cheers.
Deleted the oil injection. The pinion gear on the pump shredded the threads off the plastic drive gear on the crank. Was able to clean it up and reuse the crank in the rebuild. Part 3 of this build is on the channel where I finally install it for a warm up cycle. New owner is loving that powerhead!
I have the same engine that I'm having to re-sleeve one cylinder, one new piston and all new rings. The oil gear also caused my issues. My question is, if I'm doing an oil delete is there any reason to leave or replace the oil gear? Will it cause any issues if it's not there?
How much would you charge to build a 91 mercury black max 175 I think it probably just needs rings but I'm curious on a price also where you are located I'm in Gadsden Alabama
I can’t believe how hard it is to find a 240efi short block I’m an hr away from full disassembly I’m just going for it at this point previous owner threw a connecting rod through the block have you ever seen that one ✌️
Yeah those sport jet blocks are harder to find. I've got a 30 over 2.5 200 with some chest and port work if you're interested. Won't work horizontal like sport jet though.
Done with the rebuild went .030 over on bores. went with ccm reeds, lapped the alum blocks 400-600 grt. had to read the book on timing I’m confident tho. I did my max @25 book said 26, and idle was 9. Dropping it in today I’m excited what a project your videos were helpful thanks for sharing your time and experience 🤟
Working on a rebuild now on a xr6 where did you get your manual with the torque specs any everything , the book you were showing in this video ? Would like to know plz
I have a few questions regarding the rebuilding of this 1995 Mercury 2.5 litre XRi, EFI, 150 Black Max. I’m interested in doing a complete, 100% nothing left to chance rebuild. Every component of the engine examined and attended to and brought back to OEM or better. Is there a better venue to communicate with you? Thx!
This isn't a how to video Karen. Would you like to see my boring machine, rigid hone, bore guage, etc.? Would this make you feel better about sitting on your couch watching UA-cam videos?

How did you project go? I am considering this myself on a 150 xr2. Just lost compression on cylinder 3 and 4 at WOT.

This is a great how to video. I will now attempt this myself thanks to your influence.

Love this how to video, thank you for demonstrating
Love the video great job your presentation was very informative and specific
Glad it was helpful!
Bro, loved the video, thanks.

Haha sorry. The startup video came later. Check it out!
I love this how too video.
Lol on the scuff and buff video very entertaining.

A little loctite is good insurance for anything. Pistons were fine. Only concerning wear was in the rings themselves. Luckily.
I love this how two video
You mentioned a plastic oil gear drive in part 1. What became of that?

did you change out that oiler worm gear on the crank? and how is THAT installed?
Great video coulde bad Reed valve cause low compression?

I need one of these for my 2000 mercury 150 2 stroke saltwater series

I have a 240hp efi mercury 2001 power head total rebuild I’m looking for timing videos have you done any thanks awesome how to’s
Great video can I ask is she still holding up?
Sure is. The owner may comment if he sees this.
Working on a rebuild now on a xr6 where did you get your manual with the torque specs any everything , the book you were showing in this video ? Would like to know plz
That's a tech manual. Only way to get one that I know of is through a licensed merc dealer. Or.....just read it for free on hodges.uk website.
Send me a good email and I'll send you a digital copy. Turns out that website is for sale now. Sorry about that
@@SmalltownBassin how can I send you one it won’t let me post my email on here
You use the contact me page on my website. www.smalltownbassin.com
@@SmalltownBassin yes sir thank you I sent one on there
Where can I order parts?
Nice How to video! lol
Where did you source the steel caged rod bearings?
PROMARINEUSA.com
Thanks for watching!
Get rid of that plastic oil pump gear?

Sure man. You can shoot me a message from Facebook and I'll give you a phone number.
@@SmalltownBassin message waiting on IM. 👍
What repair manual are you using?
I'll let you know when I get to the house. Had to download and print it offline. It covers several CA bars with the same instructions.
would love to watch it but a few that jumping camera made me nauseated
Thanks for watching!
Skuffed pistons, beating locating pins back in no measuring of critical dimensions....how not to build an engine.

Hilarious! Really, I mean REALLY??? Waiting to see your video if you have a better one to watch. Waiting……..still waiting! 🙄🙄🙄
@@SmalltownBassin I could show you pics of my kwik way boring bar with table, honing cabinet, and bore gauge too if you wanna see it.
Thanks for watching!
You lied to us you said that you're building this engine for yourself with no rev limiter. Thanks for wasting my time
Sorry to disappoint. I'm happy to talk you through it if you like. Thanks for watching!
You don't sound very healthy you are breathing very hard
lol i think im just breathing right on the camera. Sorry about that.
