hello, I have a Mercury 15 hp and I'm going crazy for the same problem, giving gas it goes and it goes well then it turns off. I cleaned the carburettor and replaced the fuel pipe, today I will also disassemble the valves. thank you very much for sharing your work, I will update you! Greetings from Italy.
I've come across many a broken reed petal, and each time the engine just sucked it in and spit it back out through the exhaust. never been able to find the pieces. HOWEVER it's also possible the piece of reed is stuck somewhere in the crank case, waiting to get dislodged. That's why i change many a customer motor to fiber reeds. just like you demonstrated, they start 3x better and have more power. best investment. ever!
After spending the better part of a couple of days looking for that random little piece of broken reed and assuming it went out an exhaust port in tiny chunks and assembling the engine and putting it in the tank to run it to check out everything and adjust carbs etc. After about ten minutes of run time started hearing that dreaded rattle and pulling the engine out of the tank and pulling plugs to see if there was any serious problems found a few little pieces of the offending reed sticking in the top of a piston so down it came again and to see if it was going to need a new piston or what pulled the covers for the exhaust ports (it was a vertical inline six cylinder) and wouldn't you know it, there inside the exhaust port covers was the rest of the offending reed valve petal. Learned a really important thing, that it isn't good enough to just shine a flashlight in the cylinder and blowing it out with a air hose and cleaning solvent spray. Them little things are like beach sand, they can and will get into the tiniest of places.
@@horsepower711 yes. sorry that happened, but i wouldve taken it to a machine shop that does 2 strokes and bored it then had them clean it in a hot tank to get rid of every last particle.
I have a 1998 Mercury 250 EFI 2-Stroke. All these broken reed valve videos were freaking me out because I fish very far offshore. I ordered some carbon fiber reed valves. But when I removed my old ones, the previous owner had already changed them! They were carbon fiber and looked brand new! I’ve owned the boat for 4 years. They looked so good that I could have boxed them up and sold them as new to somebody.
I replaced all my spark plugs today. Three were loose and all of them were fouled. Solved all the symptoms and problems as discussed in this video. Always start with the most simple solutions first. Thanks for the video!
Just got through watching your videos about the reed repair on your mercury outboard. I saw how excited you were after starting it up after doing the repair yourself. I try to do a lot of repairs myself, and I get the same feeling when I accomplish doing something like that. Great job, and great videos.
I was taught that the easiest and fastest way to check for a damaged reed assembly was to simply slide a business card in front of the carbs one at a time and if it flutters or has any kind of kick out away from the carb you have a broken reed or damaged reed block. On the older four cylinder inlines you would sometimes run across the symptoms but not find a damaged reed on any of the blocks, but don't quit yet because when you pull the reeds off you're going to find a little crescent shaped nick in the aluminum reed block where for some reason the reeds would contact with the tip first instead of hitting flat and would cause the little nick that would make the engine idle bad but until the reed would eventually break it would seal good at higher rpm. But we used a flat piece of 3/4" glass and 400 grit wet or dry sandpaper and cleaning solvent with a little oil and work the reed block in a figure eight pattern checking often until the blocks were smooth with no sign of the nicks left. Then reassemble everything and it would be as good (if not better than new
I just bought a 2004 Mercury 200 and I've had the same kind of issues. I burned up my starter yesterday at the boat ramp. Gonna check the reeds tomorrow. Thanks brother.
My reeds looked okay, I guess. None broken, but it looked like some of the ends weren't making a great seal against the housing. Could this have been the reason why my boat would randomly go dead at idle and take forever to start?
My reed valves came loose on one side of one block and cracked a reed apart. The screws could not come all the way out because it's so close on the inside of the intake. But damage was still done got into 2 rod bearings that broke apart and got inside the engine and took out 2 rods 2 pistons 1 crankshaft and 1 head, not a happy day for July 4th. 1994 Mercury 200hp 2 stroke now got everything rounded up, just need new reed valves and overhaul kit. Just what you want to do in August heat. I've watched several of your videos and decided to do it myself, like you said big weed eater motorcycle. Allen Shifflette
I have an 85 mercury black max 150hp as well. It has a hard idle and sometimes dies. Especially while idling in gear. Also takes forever to start sometimes. Did re working the reeds work for you? Or was it something more than that?
Great video. I have the same issue on my Merc 125 15 years old. Going to start with the carbs, never done, and if that doesnt work will do the reeds. Thanks
I had the same issue on my 99 xr6 150 poor idle, after much research carb rebuild first. same issue poor idle, so more research, thank goodness for parts books and internet, found two reeds with bad chips, broken, researched reeds, my dealer was too expensive and wanted to sell the complete reed block. found Chris Carson and he was great help. One thing he told me to do was to use 400 grit or better paper to lightly smooth out the blocks over glass with water. also putting the screws back in used small screw removal loctite. I'll ask now, how much was the stuffing box improvement to the engine. My reed replacement was 6 years ago and still work fine. but bought stuffing box and reeds too. thanks for the great video.
Awesome man! Glad I could help! The stuffers reduce the crankcase volume which will give slightly more torque on the low end but at an equal cost on top. I found that the 2.5L 150 didn't really need the torque boost due to the long tuner. They definitely have their place in the performance world but it depends on each individuals needs. I haven't tried them on a more open exhaust setup to see if the torque gain is worth the rpm loss up top yet but I imagine the benefit would be noticed. Especially on a heavier boat. Just my thoughts and experiences. You'll hear people with opinions on both sides.
I'd love to know more about that inline fuel/water serperator. I've never seen that before. I have a 1992 Merc 150 Black Max that could certainly use that filter.
you dont need a new check valve in front of low pressure filter as the Y in the fuel line past that point is in fact a brass check valve from the automatic oil injection pump, when the motor isnt running the oil isnt being injected so there is NOT a dilution problem
I've just received CC,s reeds and stuffers and also head studs as I will be shaving the heads a bit and I don't want to break any bolts in the future. And maybe advancing the timing a degree or two because we have reasonably good 98 here in Australia. I've been looking for a video on this for ages. Thanks. It's a low hour 94 2.5L offshore.

That's exactly where it went. I was a lucky one. The reed pieces are so thin and small they were passed through without damage. Very lucky for sure. Had a piece made its way between a bearing or piston, things would've been different.
Maybe it broke little pieces at a time getting progressively worse. Good video. I am having my own issues with an Evinrude etec I bought used. Mercury makes a cleaner that is used by spraying it into the carburetor(s) following the directions on the can. After putting a can through it and choking it out by flooding it with the cleaner I let it sit overnight and the next morning pulled the plugs out and spun it a few times and then throwing four old plugs from my toolbox in it and fired it up and ran it for about a half hour at different throttle settings both idle and full throttle it finally burned out all the cleaner and I shut it off and put his new sparkplugs back in and tried it again and after readjusting the carbs it was almost as good as new and would now idle and fire up with just a bump from the starter or before you could pull it p
well you found the reed was broken, and yes your right its a steel reed, then you got new reeds to fix it, then fitted them WRONG, you should of delved down into the guts of that motor to try and find the missing part of the reed before it destroys the motor. the worst thing you can find is a broken steel reed, it means you need a complete teardown to find the broken part or if it going anywhere near the piston and wall or the big ends or small ends you could have a completely destroyed motor. those broken metal parts dont just fall out the bottom, so if you cannot find them with the intake off then its a teardown....
What you're saying is 100% correct. In this particular instance though, the pieces were not in the crankcase or cylinder. Trust me, I looked. I've got too much invested into this just to blow the motor over a Reed. The only explanation can be that the piece was pushed out the carb instead of being sucked into the crankcase. Thanks for the comment though. Your input will help others with a similar issue.
good job done on changing the reed valves,,,,, but,,,,,, were has the broken part of the reed valve gone?,,,, you never found it!,, so it has got to have gone inside the engine!,, its either stuck in the crankcase or its gone up into the cylinder and have been blown out the exhaust or it could still be stuck in the top of the piston, so just swopping out the broken reed valve and ""not finding the broken or missing part!"",, running this engine you are tempting providence,, this engine could still go with a bang on you and rip its self to bit's!,, never ever just change out a broken reed valve and then run the engine,, unless you find the broken part of the reed valve first!,, I hope you dont find out what your mistake was,,, the hard way!

well you found the reed was broken, and yes your right its a steel reed, then you got new reeds to fix it, then fitted them WRONG, you should of delved down into the guts of that motor to try and find the missing part of the reed before it destroys the motor. the worst thing you can find is a broken steel reed, it means you need a complete teardown to find the broken part or if it going anywhere near the piston and wall or the big ends or small ends you could have a completely destroyed motor. those broken metal parts dont just fall out the bottom, so if you cannot find them with the intake off then its a teardown....
But don't you wanna know why these reeds failed??
good job done on changing the reed valves,,,,, but,,,,,, were has the broken part of the reed valve gone?,,,, you never found it!,, so it has got to have gone inside the engine!,, its either stuck in the crankcase or its gone up into the cylinder and have been blown out the exhaust or it could still be stuck in the top of the piston, so just swopping out the broken reed valve and ""not finding the broken or missing part!"",, running this engine you are tempting providence,, this engine could still go with a bang on you and rip its self to bit's!,, never ever just change out a broken reed valve and then run the engine,, unless you find the broken part of the reed valve first!,, I hope you dont find out what your mistake was,,, the hard way!
Too much talk. Frustrating

So glad did video and showed this! No scoical media but email is samheather4always@gmail.com
Thanks Sam!
Chat less get to the point? You could have done a compression test to determine if the reeds were bad.
Video could be a fraction of its length if this dude didn’t like to hear himself talk and tell stories in an exaggerated southern accent. Next…
😆 I'll check out your channel for production tips!
I have a the same exact motor except 2000 model. I have the hard start, rough idle but I also deal feeling of lower power in hole shot when livewell is full and my speed is down. Just curious how fast your boat runs pre change and now?
tuffdaddy1711 ur over proped
@@reddawng43x91 actually my prop is fine. Found out i had a bad spark plug. Changed all of them and now she runs great..
tuffdaddy1711 glad it worked out that simple
