  • Welcome back to my channel! Despite the popularity of the Mercury 2 stroke V6, there is not a common place to find a lot of information about them, so I spent hours researching the history and development behind it, scoured forums, books, and compiled what I think is a pretty decent primer on why this engine is worth knowing about. If you learn anything from this, please leave a like/comment if you want to see more of these videos. Happy 4th of July, and Happy MercMonday! Cheers!!

      Heck, I mourn the fact that most of you didn’t get to enjoy the growls of the Mark 75 and Mark 78 Tower of Power engines. To me as a child, one of those, especially when backing our little 16 foot Crosby runabout into the river behaved like a living creature, turning to the left and to the right looking this way and that way as it growled backwards into the river. Then she would smoothly and unhesitatingly start forward as dad shifted her seamlessly thru her non-existent (AKA “silent”) neutral. Pure poetry.

    This video was awesome man. Huge 2 stoke fan here. I grew up with OMC in my blood. It's sad that BRP discontinued it's Evinrude line and Merc no longer produces a 2 stroke. I feel the general public got dubed into believing 4 strokes were the answer in the outboard industry.

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  2 роки тому +21

      Yeah, I don't know if Evinrude's claims were true or not, but the fact that snowmobile companies have been able to clean up their 2 strokes and continue selling them makes me think it would be possible. I think part of the issue is that high performance boating has just grown far out of reach of "average" people. A normalish person could have afforded a 200hp Merc and 20' high performance boat, but today, nothing in that category is even really produced. All the high performance stuff is focused for gigantic offshore cats for ultra rich people. I don't know if the market led things this way, or boat companies just had more ROI on larger boats so they focued there, but if the emphasis is placed on small/light/go fast (like snowmobiles) then 2 strokes tech is still pretty relevant.

    • @ADDvanced

      I think it'd be possible, but it just wouldn't sell enough to justify developing it.

      @@ADDvanced The sled industry has already passed 2024 C.A.R.B emissions standards. EFI and 100 % biodegradable synthetic oil. Also, they have proven less emissions than 4 stroke sleds on a HP/cc basis. Meaning a 180 HP 2 stroke is cleaner than a larger 180 HP 4 stroke. Especially the 2 stroke turbos.

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  2 роки тому +5

      @@GT-mn3bx Yeah I'm aware.... I just don't think the people with money to purchase brand new boats (skews pretty old if you look at the data) want something fast/fun/exciting, and they don't want to mess with checking oil levels. If boating became more affordable again, aka, something that younger people, who often want something faster/more exciting, then... maybe we'd see a resurrection? Sure would be interesting to mount a modern 2 stroke snowmobile engine on a midsection of an outboard....

    Cool subject for a video. But to be fair, I was already in love with the sound and performance of my '92 Black Max 135. It pushes my 19 foot aluminum fishing boat across Lake Huron "very nice". Those 2.5L Mercury Racing motors were/are the sickest motors ever made. The sound of a single 2.5 is enough the get the hair on your neck stand up... But a pair of them at 7500rpm must be experienced to comprehend the way the sound of those 2stroke Mercury Racing motors to get your adrenaline flowing. Absolutely awesome.

I know a bunch of subscribers want to see boat content ALL THE TIME but it's winter here 4 months of the year, and so if I do like... one of my civic videos, a big chunk of the subscribers don't want to watch civic stuff, so they don't watch it, which affects my metrics on how often youtube will suggest my videos to other people. I grew up on a lake and my dad had the fastest boat on it. People would build special light weight boats to race us with. It was so fun. Me and dad decided to build our own fast boat. And we did from scratch and so many people wanted to buy them we started Hurricane Performance Boats in the 80's. We made some slick boats that were the fastest around. Dad died and I was left with everything but the economy was tanking and I had to work for other people for a while. I never had any advertising, just word of mouth. But I still have a tunnel Hull that I designed and built with a 2.5 liter Drag Mercury and I love that motor and will never sell it. Best motor ever. Mine is a 1997 Mercury 2.5 liter. This was on Wooten Lake in Belfair Wa. Fun times we had...

    Just found your channel a couple days ago and subscribed as I really enjoy the content I have seen so far... I see you are from Wisconsin as one of the first videos I watched was the outboard drags from Fremont of which I used to run the river around there as I'm originally from Sheboygan... I moved to the Branson Missouri area in 2001 to get away from the Wisconsin Winters and I love the large lakes in this area...
    Since the mid '90s I have had several high performance boats all with the V6 Mercury. Two Concords, two HydroStreams, two STVs and a Rapid Craft Riot..

    WOW!!!! Can't stop watching this over and over again. Can't seem to find much about these. Just picked up a 1986 starcraft with one of these V6 on it, not sure what I got. Seller says its a 1996 175hp, but whoever owned it before put 200hp stickers on it. SN 0G030041.It hauls ass, gps says 80ish.... Looking forward to the next episode!!!!

    last year I got a boat with a 2004 150hp efi salt water motor. After sorting out a few things, one being the black finish covering electrical connections Im really starting to like this motor. It starts easy, and sounds great. So far so good.

    Excellent video. I used to have a mercury Bridgeport 225 on an old Astro glass bass boat. I had a 150 decals on the cowling and all my buddies at the bass club used to hate the blast off at the tournament because even in that heavy Astro glass I would still smoke all of them. Of course, it burned about 18 gallons an hour at wide-open throttle and I only had an 18 gallon tank. Fortunately, I will get to wherever I need to go in just a few minutes so I never really ran out of fuel on a tournament. Anyway, I know this is lengthy, but I just appreciate someone else who loves these old motors and if I can ever find a sleek craft tunnel hole I will be getting my hands on it. Or I would settle for Allison also. But I’m a man of small means so whatever I get it’s gonna have to be a fixer-upper. I wish you the best of luck in this boat build and I will be watching with anticipation.

      150 decals on a 225, classic 😂 Yeah, I can't afford an STV or Allison either, but hopefully this channel inspires a few more people to rebuild that really cool looking hull rotting in a yard down their street. Restoring a boat is a lot easier and more affordable than a musclecar, and way more fun.

    My best friend is the the man that literally designed the Merc 2.5 Drag. He designed all of the specs for the intake and exhaust ports. He won 4 national championships in 1 season in 1997 in outboard drag racing in his Allison. 2 strokes don’t pollute any more than than a 4 stroke if high quality synthetic oil is used! 2 strokes get a bad reputation, but… they produce way more power with way less displacement!

    I loved the sound of a Mercury. Nothing is meaner on the water. I had a 1979 225 Black Max with 225 h.p. it sounded incredible. Doug Kidrick had about a dozen tiny hydroplanes and he ran only Mercury motors. He had all kinds of them. When he passed his wife asked me if I wanted any of them but I had no extra money for them at that time. I would have given my left nut for just one of them. He was a cool old man. R.I.P old man Doug. Your spirit still resides at Wooten Lake old friend.

    Great video. Love to learn a little more history. I remember the term "loop charge," but it was either forgotten or never saw a drawing of what it actually meant. We owned a 25th anniversary 50 hp Mercury 4 cylinder at one time. They had a nice sound.

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  2 роки тому +1

      From what I understand there are benefits/drawbacks to both types, loop charged engines run REAL well at Wide open throttle, and not as well at idle/midrange. I could be wrong tho, I'm learning as I go here.

    • @nerd1000ify
      @nerd1000ify 2 роки тому +2

      Broadly speaking loop charging is a much better strategy than crossflow. Mostly because it does a better job of flushing the exhaust out of the cylinder without mixing it with the fresh charge. Loop charged engines also have better combustion chamber geometry (no deflector on the piston) so they can run higher compression ratios.

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  2 роки тому

      @@nerd1000ify Yup, but the tradeoff is less great at idling/coming off idle. Allegedly. (sick ostrich)

    My Dad bought a 18 ft Skiff Craft run about that had a 125 mercury outboard. That boat was constructed from wood, you could have 6 or 8 people in it and pull 2 skiers up with no problem. It would run about 49 mph with out power trim. I know it wasn't a v6 2.4 but as a 8 ,9 year old boy that was powerful. I love the 2 stroke engine's that sound they make is awesome. Keep up the good work I am a fan.
