      @@knifesharpeningnorway For me I am not hard on my blades (EDC) so a quick touch up on wood loaded with diamond is enough for the most part and removes minimal steel. Also I find that I cannot get the level of refinement from even the finest grit stones that I can get from say .5 mic diamond on something like leather. Something like my kitchen knives I normally find myself touching up the edges on a ceramic rod or one of my hard Ark's and think they really benefit from something a bit more aggressive. But everyone is different so.

    Have you made a video explaining the terminology of the venev stones? I’ve seen stuff like abrasive concentration percentages but haven’t heard it explained. That might be a video that would do well.

    Random sharpening question: I have been using my new Venev dual sided 8x3 Dragon stone, 240/400 grit. After that stone, stropping on basswood with 3m and 1m. I get the edge really sharp, slicing throw phonebook paper super clean. But it doesn't really want to cut hair off my arm. I know I'm fully apexed and sharp, so kinda wondering why it's not super shaving sharp. Am I losing a toothy edge? (I just sharpened M390 using this progression, and that's what I noticed.) Thanks for your input!

      Can be a number of things, have you tried to hold in right hand and shave arm hair, then switch hands and try the same thing (not shaving in either direction)? May be fully apexed but if there is a very fine burr still you will need to remove it. Try checking both sides with flashlight for any burr or burr remnants. If the edge is clean of any burr it should be able to cleanly cut paper towel without hanging up. If you over strop especially on a soft substrate like leather loaded with abrasive you can over polish (won't cut paper towel) and also add too much micro-convexity to edge. Wood like basswood helps to prevent this from happening. If you think there is a fine wire edge you can remove via lightly pulling through cork or soft wood, doesn't seem to damage the edge like you'd see with heaving burr being pulled though wood, that tends to collapse the burr back onto the edge and really do nothing as far as removing it. Also you can try few very very light high angle passes on something like a fine/uf ceramic stone at 40-45 degrees, this hits the burr/wire edge directly and normally removes it fairly easy but very light pressure must be used to prevent adding another bevel.

      @@NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY With knife in right hand, it shaves arm when pushing away from me. When flipping over and pulling edge toward me, it doesn't seem to want to cut hair.

      @@MrEric0822 With knife in right hand try pushing away cut of arm hair on left arm, then with knife in left hand try pushing away cut of arm hair right arm. If it shaves arm hair on one side and not the other I would say there is still a very fine burr. Try the methods mentioned above and see if you can get it to shave in both directions.

    Looks good. Have you had a chance to try all of the Ultra-Sharp diamond plates yet? If so will you be doing a video on them? I got a set and they seem pretty coarse. They are breaking in but still very aggressive.

    • @NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY
      @NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY  2 роки тому +3

      Thanks! Yeah I have the full set of them, 300 to 3k and really like em'. I will try to use them in some future videos, I recently used them on a folder in maxamet up to 3k and then stropped on diamond / basswood and man the edge came out nasty sharp. As you mentioned they are super aggressive and take a lot of use to break them in, I have used the 300 and 600 to the point of abuse (leveling very dense natural stones and ceramics with lots of pressure) and they are finally easing up aggression wise. Really quite impressive the plating process they use, more much durable than any other diamond plates I have used.

    Could you explain the step down from 1200 diamond to Spyderco Medium Ceramic? Isn't that about 600 grit?

    • @NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY
      @NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY  2 роки тому +2

      It's ceramic vs diamond, the medium ceramic still leaves a finer finish compared to the 1200/9mic DMT plates even though the medium is rated at 15 microns. This is especially true if your diamond plates are newer and very aggressive. I have a ten plus year old DMT (EF) that is very well broken in and under the scope still shows coarser scratches compared to the medium Spyderco.
