    Fantastic. I was looking forward to seeing your thoughts. I agree the finer the stone, the more glassy and ceramic like it feels. That green/yellow one, i bit into as well. It was softer than i anticipated and took a nice chunk. The results you got were 👌.
    Feel free to lap em and play around with different finishes. They can be super aggressive or super glazed depending on how you go. Pressure is fairly forgiving. Like most ceramic water stones. Load up starts to become a problem only on the finger grits, and only when they start getting glazed. Can always use a rust eraser, bar keep
    Friend, or nagara, to clean em.

      Thanks Jef. Will lap with some 60 grit SIC, the stuff I have is on the harder side for SIC and not as friable so will see if that makes any difference but so far they are not really loading all that bad and giving very good results. So far I'm really liking them and just got done testing on some higher carbon simple steels knives like opinel's, man they just chew though those steels crazy fast, I did a NO10 and a full burr was raised in only a few passes and left surprisingly good edges. Was wiping them with soapy water and blue sponge (rougher side) but will try nagara stone. Thanks again!

    My police 4 and Delica both had that same issue at the plunge, I just fixed it over a few sharpenings. Both also had uneven bevels too. One side was really wide like maybe 10° and the other was like 18°.

    for k390 i go only up to 7/5 micron with no strop.. Its high carbide volume steel and making a mirror edge is totally pointless (imo) and at 7/5 the edge is amazing for any utility work , extremely sharp and great bite.. But i guess for testing the stones... Will work great... I love VENEV stones🙏❤ I have them 3 years , sharpened 100s of blades and they are like new (still almost 3mm layer)... They will last 2-3generations🙏

      For high carbide steels I normally use DMT 600 grit (25 micron) diamond then 1 micron strop.

    As far as pressure, I feel these are very forgiving. You can really give it to her lol. Angle is a different story. I feel like that’s especially true with the last 3 grits.I had the same feelings you did initially. They sorta grow on you after time. I think they need quite a bit of break in as weird as that sounds. Excellent video ✌️

    • @NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY
      @NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY  3 роки тому +1

      I agree, they seemed forgiving as far as pressure and not the angle. Luckily the few times the edge bit into the stone it really didn't do any damage that I had to go back and fix. I may try dressing them with some 60 SIC and see if that changes the feel or performance any but I doubt it will. Overall with the little time I have on them I like em' and defiantly something different to play around with in the future. And thanks! :-)

      @@seff2318 Yes very happy especially with the little time I have on them. Going from diamond plates to diamond on balsa strops left a killer edge that was super sticky and very sharp at least by my standards. I would imagine that I would see some improvement over time with them especially after lapping on some different SIC powders and trying different lubricants and just getting everything dialed in. Now I love my water stones, ceramics etc. but plan on getting a set of these for sure. You still using them as well?

      @@NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY Cheap Smith's brand diamond stones and a strop with green paste. Can't even remember the name or size now. I get it to having a burr on each side and no matter how light and careful I am to even it up it always ends up hair whittling on one side and dull on the other. A few more strokes and it reverses. I have finally gotten them even and they will shave hair, but nothing spectacular. I suppose that's about as good as I'm going to get considering my hardware.

    • @NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY
      @NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY  3 роки тому +1

      @@inmyopinion_3672 Diamond stone is good however the green paste is more than likely Cr2O3 and isn't ideal for higher alloy steels like k390, You located in the States? With very fine burrs that are fatigued and just barely hanging on you can lightly draw through cork or softer wood and another thing that works well with very fine burrs is while stropping push the blade inward or pull outward while barely doing an edge trailing stroke, I've found examining under magnification this kinda sheers the burr off. You have to be careful not to pull straight across on leather as it tends to cut it so I draw away from the edge ever so slightly while going across if that makes sense like this: ua-cam.com/video/XnhIKOX6Rco/v-deo.html

    I was just wondering, when you put and edge like that on a knife is stropping back to a fine edge that much easier? Or would a coarse edge be about the same?

      An edge like this vs say an edge off a DMT fine touched up on some 1 micron diamond abrasive for example both touch up fairly quickly given there is no real damage and the edge isn't reflecting light.

    Can you use diamond stones for pretty much any steel?

  • @camorakidd_edc
    @camorakidd_edc 3 роки тому +1

    This is no critique or whatever. I just always wonder why people take these carbide rich steels to such a high polish or even over a 1k finish. Especially with that much stropping. It will have little bite left and the beauty of a steel like that lays in it's carbides which really prefer a toothy edge. Obviously anybody can do whatever they want with their knives but why not just get a hard carbon steel? It will usually keep it's shaving sharpness longer, takes a polish better and is easy to sharpen..

    • @NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY
      @NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY  3 роки тому +1

      Really a personal preference IMO. For the most part this edge still has some good bite to it (of course not like a 600 grit edge or something similar would have) but still quite aggressive overall and for my normal day to day uses it's more than adequate. The front end sharpness tends to fade quickly however the back end or working edge sharpness seems to last forever and I can quickly bring the edge back to a very high level of sharpness quickly. Also enjoy having a nice mirror on my daily carry knives, I know that is not for everyone.

    • @turing2376

      I am curious about this issue of how much bite the edge has vs. polish. Can you tell me, in this particular example after sharpening this knife if you run it across your finger nail does it mostly slide or grab onto it?
