    I too have a Aaron Johnson magnacut knife and I have sharpened mine strictly on Venev's alone and then stropped it with gunny juice progression on kangaroo leather down to .1micron and I've never seen anything like it! Some people have said this magnacut doesn't take a super sticky edge but I feel those people do not know how to sharpen a knife properly because the edge that came up on this thing is insane super sticky sharp and while that initial sharpness has since faded it still holds a remarkable level of sharpness with just an occasional swipe or two on the strops for maintenance... One thing I will say is that Aaron certainly has his heat treatment protocol down pat and he is able to make some phenomenal blades! Quite strange he would not charge me either for mine, I tried my best and absolutely insisted he let me pay him but he just won't take it lol the guy is alright in my book for somebody who I have never met...

      Yeah the edge retention with this steel is pretty unreal, down the road I'll experiment with different stones including diamond and see if there is much difference in the edge that comes up as well as edge retention. He certainly does and if he goes into knife making full time some day I think he'll do all right. He's a stand up dude in my book too!

      That "people that say MC doesn't take a sticky edge don't know how to sharpen" comment can work both ways

    I never tried soap and water on my shapton glass 1000 before, can’t wait to give it a shot! I’ll also try finishing off on backwards strokes i’ve always went forward. Never thought of it looking at it microscopically pieces of abrasive stuck in the edge. But it makes sense to me great video!! Thank you for the kind words.
    Ps The clearcoat on the handle is just a
    Acrylic gloss coating from Hobby lobby. Anywhere it wears off or gets too thin you can just spray a little bit more on.

    • @NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY
      @NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY  2 роки тому +3

      Yeah just a little bit is all you need. Forward or edge leading normally works better IMO on stones that don't release abrasive, the abrasive floating in the slurry seems to impact and effect the edge ever so slightly, using trailing passes you don't seem to get that effect only a very fine foil edge that is easily removed especially with this steel. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks again, in the future I will try some SIC stones and see how the steel like that.
      Oh ok, nice. I have lots of that so I will just lightly sand with some high grit automotive sandpaper then spray some clear on there and blend it in.

    • @AaronJohnson1979
      @AaronJohnson1979 2 роки тому +2

      @@NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY Yep that’s it if you get the gloss it’ll blend right in just sand the affected area.
      Far as the heat treat I still don’t believe I got full potential out of magnacut I do believe it’s capable of much more than what I am able to do with my set up. Companies with big vacuum chambers and liquid nitrogen like Spyderco or peters heat treat Will be able to pull a little bit more performance out of magnacut

      @@AaronJohnson1979 Will give it a shot and see how it comes out, again really can't feel it as that area has smoothed over. I would be impressed if anyone or a company could squeeze much more performance out of this steel, it's really good/impressive as is, you did a great job with it.

    Hey buddy! How goes it? Nice looking (and performing) knife. Pretty strong testimonial for its edge retention. I may need to seek our some CPM Magnacut. Love those Shapton Glass stones too. I wonder how my Edge Pro Diamonds will do on that steel? I've become so impatient these days, and quality diamonds have become my best friend. Take care! Good to see you posting again. Missed your insight.

      Hey Kenny, doing well and I hope you and yours are too! You still out cruising the roads? It's some pretty amazing stuff, supposedly the one I have doesn't even have an optimal heat treat and it performs like this. From what I hear the Gyutos from Miligo knives (not sure if that's how it's spelled) are really good.

      kitchen knives dont need gimmicky steels and if they're not grinding to the right geometry it's literally not just pointless but counter productive to use a steel like this. There's a reason it's not something that's available outside of custom knives. Anyway I'd love to see a choil shot on this knife. My gut tells me a $40 victorionix will cut better and for longer with basic budget stainless steel. Why? Because geomtry. The thickest behind the edge kitchen knife I own is a shun classic 150 mm petty which comes in at about .15 thou behind the edge. Better/best ones come closer to 10 thou, some even less. You can touch up the secondary bevel in seconds but they will move through ingredients literally without an edge better than most knives will fresh off the stones. Why? Because geometry.

      @@NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY $350 for a billet of MC that has a handle screwed on to it is utterly insane. Literally a $40 victiononix will run circles around that thing. It has the geometry of an axe.

    Language is important! Someone new to sharpening might justly believe that the sharpening element is glass. This is not so. These "glass stones" are neither glass or stone. they are ceramic. The cutting is done by a ceramic that is fused to a glass plate.

    My knife is sharp and when I pass it on the leather it becomes not sharp on before
    Why?

    • @NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY
      @NORTHWESTKNIFEGUY  Рік тому

      Is this after sharpening, after some use touching up or both? Guessing that you're using too much force/pressure when stropping, using a lot of pressure will compress the leather causing it to kinda spring upwards rounding the cutting edge/apex. This happens on a microscopic scale and you won't be able to see it happening, try using very light pressue when stropping. ua-cam.com/video/VkO-0PPr1pY/v-deo.html

    Dang mate you got it sharp. Thanks for tagging me and awesome you too like the knife 😁😁😁
    Mine is a little harder at 64 it takes a screaming edge and keeps it for a long long time. Also harder to sharpen hehe
    Happy to see ya back mate wish ya all the best
    Also ive found magnacut can be pretty daang grabby go from example a 300 straight too a 4k just a few strokes to refine and just clean up the apex
    Mine is as low i could go while not scratching it up too bad

      What stones have you used so far to sharpen on? Tying to decide on what stones to use next time I sharpen it.
      Yeah I got it as low as I could before it started hitting the main bevel, down the road I'll lay it down and thin it a bit maybe use gritomatic SIC stones.
