Nosferatu (SNES) Playthrough

- A playthrough of Seta's 1995 action-platformer for the Super Nintendo, Nosferatu.
Played through on the hard setting. I also included a few extras at the end of the video:
Regular game over screen 56:07
Game over screen after eight deaths 56:23
The bad ending 56:39
Easy level ending 57:16
Normal level ending 57:45
When the moon is dyed in blood, a bat departs from a forbidden castle into the night. Having changed from its human form to seek its next victim, his name is whispered in fear. Nosferatu, creature of night.
That intro sequence doesn't hold anything back, does it? What a way to kick off a horror game, and one for the SNES, no less! More impressive yet is how, against all odds, the game actually manages to live up to the expectations set by that opening.
Coming out near the end of 1995, Nosferatu was a fairly late SNES release that, like so many others at the time, came and went with little fanfare. What a damn shame that was, too, because Seta was punching way, waaaay above their weight when they put this gem together.
Nosferatu is a novel chimera of a game, marrying the deliberate controls and rotoscoped animation of a cinematic platformer (think • Prince of Persia (NES)... or • Out of this World (SNE... ) with the action of a combo-heavy beat 'em up, and it's all handsomely tied together by its Castlevania-inspired visuals and gothic vibes.
It's a tough game, but it plays well, and it offers plenty to sink your teeth into (har har). The game has four distinct endings, most of the stages have multiple paths and secret rooms to find, and the silky smooth combat has a welcome bit of depth to it thanks to the inclusion of timed hits and combos that level up as you get stronger.
And the presentation, it has to be said, is top-notch stuff. Between the fluidity of the animation, the quality and detail of the art, and the excellent soundtrack, Nosferatu's graphics, music, and atmosphere pose a credible challenge to the SNES's big boys of horror. It can stand next to Super Castlevania IV and Demon's Crest with its head held high.
If you haven't played Nosferatu, you're missing out.
(Fun piece of trivia: the credits list one "K. Igarashi" as a graphics designer. Coincidence? Yup, it is - thanks for the info, @LPetal86! - but a fun one, nonetheless.)
(Another fun piece of trivia: the super dramatic intro theme is an unlicensed almost-cover of the main theme from Christine, a movie based on a Stephen King novel about a killer car. Check it out! • Christine (1983) Theme )

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocom...) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games!
This came out today it would be heralded as a retro throwback masterpiece
Nosferatu is one of the best SNES games that nobody played. (Check the timestamps in the description for stuff like the game overs and the different endings!)
I played and love it
I really wish this game were just a little bit better. It has so much potential.
So true! My brother and I rocked it often.... not one monster and demon can stand good ole punches to the face!!! Cartridge alone is worth a foretune now!!! 😂
First time I saw it thanks
Do you really believe that Koji Igurashi played a part in Nosferatu's development?
Was _immediately_ blown away by this game's presentation alone. The visuals in the opening sequence appear almost like most PC games at the time. The dreary aesthetic and phenomenal soundtrack go hand to hand with the "Karateka"-esque gameplay. Lastly, the character animation is surprisingly smooth.
The main characters hands are rated E for everyone.
One thing I will say is that the soundtrack for the game is really good. I do love how subtle the changes to the bad game over screen are too. You also gotta love how Nosferatu gets beaten by kung fu moves and not holy whips and crosses lol
I just saw the AVGN episode about this game. And the episode was hilarious
Already?!
It seems unlikely that James saw this upload and then pumped out a video in just 9 days, but I guess a lot of things are possible.
Just started that exact video and had to come see the music intro
I always appreciate the seasonally appropriate uploads, esp during Halloween time.
The average Belmont: I have a holy whip and several enchanted sub-weapons to aid me in my quest!
This guy: Catch these hands, son!
Disturbing fact about this game. If you die 7 or 8 times, pay close attention to the girl in the photo. She has fangs now, for she was bitten by Nosferatu offscreen due to the player's many failed attempts. Because of that, you are locked to the bad ending, and the only way to not get it is to quit and try again. And if you quit, it just says Game Over for the girl was already bitten.
Now THAT's thinking outside the box when it came to 1990s video-game development.
This guy doesn't need a cross or holy water or any of that other stuff, just go in there and start punching monsters in the face! Never saw this game as a kid, but this guy would have been my role model growing up if I had.
You're not the only one who gets amazed by the Nosferatu protagonist. I think the Holy Water and Cross stuff would still be good to have around, if only to sanitize and clean up the mess involved with the baddies being undead at all. But fighting them unarmed? Priceless.
@@MasterKnightDH Now I have to wonder if it there is any vampire lore that states whether or not it's even possible to defeat a vampire in hand-to-hand combat.
@@rcblazerWell how about being a subtle "If God is with me, them who can be against me?" blessing.
@@srichael2713 Even better, you could use "I kick ass for the Lord!" from Braindead.
His Name is Kyle and his GF name is Erin
Thanks for playing. The game appear to be one of the bigger "adventure" games for Super Nintendo. The graphic level is outstanding.
This dude is seriously the most badass Monster Slayer
Look out, Simon Belmont.
Here comes The Karate Kid!
I came here immediately after the AVGN episode. I have never got to play this game.
56:27
Oh thats right! This is the game with the creepy Continue screen easter egg devilishly telling you that you died too much and are route to the bad ending! Sneaky devs...
It's a real easy thing to miss too, since by that point you're likely so frustrated that you just mash continue out of habit and wouldn't even notice that something in the background has changed for the worse.
@@NorthStarBlue1I love how subtle it is. Her eyebrows arch slightly and she gets one-pixel fangs.
@@NintendoComplete: I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me until you and SoulStreak64 pointed it out.
Never heard of this game, and enjoying a lot watching this gameplay. Seems like Prince of Persia and Castlevania had a child 😅 Love the soundtrack, the atmosphere...and the guy really knows how to punch and kick!
There is something I find eminently funny about beating the shit out of Frankenstein with your bare fists.
Crazy that the soundtrack is done by the same guy who did Cybernator and Brain Lord
Na época, eu tinha medo desse jogo... más "Para mim" ele está entre os 10 melhores jogos de aventura do SNES.
The Nerd just did an episode on this game. I came here to see the ending since he could not beat it.
Interesting game. I like the graphics and the movements. A little bit like "Prince of Persia".
Great - never heard of this and interesting to see it! Although it's wild that you can defeat the head honcho vampire by punching and kicking him lol.
I've never seen or heard of... Bravo, Nintendo complete.
Same or if I did it was at that tail end of the system life
The stage clear animation cracks me up every time.
Maybe this is my memory playing tricks on me, but it felt like this game was being previewed around the SNES launch, and then it just took YEARS to get finished. Just a very odd curio.
When the kitty is so good, you're prepared to give Dracula the hands to get her back.
@@snafuthegreat Well, there went lunch
This game looks amazingly I wish I owned it. Prince of Persia meets Castlevania, and the ost is good too.
Prince of Persia meets Castlevania meets Street Fighter. Weird idea but it works!
totally!
40:22
I'm willing to believe that those Crystals probably grant the Player Super Human Strength if he's able to beat up a Stone Golem with fists!! X3
This game looks and sounds amazing. I need to try it out
Nosferatu (ノスフェラトゥ) is a horror-themed action platform game developed and published by SETA Corporation for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It was released in Japan on October 7, 1994, and in North America in October 1995.
The player controls a young man known as Kyle, who rides to the vampire Nosferatu's castle in order to defeat him and save his beloved girlfriend Errin from his clutches.
Dracula version of Prince of Persia 56:24 Erin has fangs?!
You see fangs, you get the Bad ending where Erin bites you.
@@snafuthegreatDon't forget her eyes, she's seem to be more sinister
Wild. Never seen before
Here because of the Nerrrrrrd! FAAAWRK!!!
Congratulations! You got 330,000 subscribers!
Thanks! 😊
You have to be a real bad mf to beat Dracula to death with your BARE HANDS!
Awesome video.
It`s Cody from Final Fight in the Castlevania universe using the Prince of Persia engine!
This looks like flashback. Honestly enemies and atmosphere look OK. But they should gave him a crossbow, crosses and holy water. Kung fu really?
“Who was flickering the lights?”
nice 😀
I've never heard of this game before, possibly because it was never released in Europe.
Seems like going single player with a Double Dragon character in a Castlevania game o/
I'd love another Halloween themed game if you have time. Horror games are always fun during this time of the year. 🙂
Return to the castlevania
I remember playing this on an emulator years ago back in 2013, and finished it with save states for some reason.
This is another one of those games I saw in Nintendo Power and was really hoping would show up on my local rental stores new release shelf. I could tell just by looking at it it was like Prince of Persia which I loved and finally the day came. It's a little disappointing that it focuses more on combat than puzzle solving and would be an all time classic of a hidden gem if only it were just a little bit better.
Happy Halloween!
So, this game is basically _Castlevania_ meets _Prince of Persia_ . Well, that's an unusual combination to me, but after seeing your playthrough, it definitely works. Also, for a Super NES game released during the early days of the ESRB and given a K-A rating (the precursor to the E rating), the violence is pretty graphic. I would like to add that the mere idea of a lone hero taking out supernatural abominations with martial-arts skills instead of weapons with or without supernatural powers needs to be done more often in video games. XD By the way, one of the staff members behind the game is one K. Igarashi. Could that possibly be Koji "Iga" Igarashi!?
Just watched AVGN's vid on this, and while it's unfortunate that this game is pretty dang flawed, it still has some cool stuff about it.
Wait so the vampire hunter just punches and kicks kung fu style?
"So once again, it's like castlevania"
The 1st stage is clearly the coolest.
Trevor must have been trying to emulate this guy in the Netflix series.
I loved that. "You must be the Belmont."
Never heard of this game looks good though. kinda like Nintendo's answer to Sega's Comix Zone.
Decent for what it was..kinda graphic reminds me of odd world lmfao
Im Here After AVGN LOLz😅
42:00 best soundtrack ever 👀👄👅
This game was not supposed to be a nosferatu game, seems like that theme was tacked on last minute.
Incredible I jus watched AVGN video and search for a good ending video. Your play makes it look like a walk in the park. This game is no joke, mad skills you got there. Are you b be y any chance on retroachievements?
Thanks! I've played it quite a bit. I really dug the style. No, I'm not, sorry.
@@NintendoComplete Thank you for your reply. Hope to see on the site it would be awesome 👏🏻
The main characters of Castlevania are weaklings and use weapons, but a real man defeats evil spirits with his fists.
To be fair, the antagonist is Nosferatu, not Dracula, so I think it could be argued that Nosferatu and his supernatural minions are much weaker than Drac and his undead and demonic crew.
@@Loader2K1The Main Villain of the game is def Count Dracula himself because you can see by his looks in both Game Over Screen and during his final boss fight, from his Red Cape to Black Hair classic Drac Looks, The Nosferatu name is likely due to Copyright issues
@@zenicehero9154: To my knowledge, the name Dracula is public domain, so I don't think that Seta would have gotten in trouble with, say, Konami, unless they were using the _Castlevania_ and/or _Akumajou Dracula_ names.
God dammit I skipped this one but watched the AVGN video, well since I’m here I’ll at least see how unfair the game is.
I'd rather play this than Dracula X.
Then who was flickering the lights?
AVGN brought me here.
Seven deaths? Acutally to get the cursed continue screen you have to die eight times, because in the Japanese version you have a limit of 9 continues (8 normal and the last cursed one that locks you to the bad ending). While in the US version, despite you have unlimited continues, the rule is the same except that despite you're locked to the bad ending, you can still continue after you die. While in the JP version dying the tenth time means Game Over!
God! The game over screen is extremely creepy, just like some of the Neo-Geo games, Ninja Gaiden (Arcade game) and Super Darius II ones.
You're right, I miscounted. Thanks!
Bram Stroker (Sega CD) + Prince of Persia (SNES) = Nosferatu (SNES)
Predecessor to Prince of Persia?
The only thing I like is that the game has a bit more variety than Prince of Persia.
Game play all of prins persia
I can't tell if this player is really good or if AVGN is really bad.
It's tough, but it's really not that bad with some practice. Maybe slightly harder than Prince of Persia?
@@NintendoComplete AVGN said the controls are really unresponsive. Is that true?
@@nakfoor1846 No, they work fine once you have the hang of them. They have the same sort of delay as PoP's has.
AVGN brought me here.
