I like how Thanos accepted his defeat, no cheesy "NO! NO! NO!" line. Just calm, composed, and quiet acceptance. It shows that he had dignity and a warrior's honor.
Ironically to quote Thanos: "I know what it's like to lose. To feel so desperately that you're right just to fail all the same. Dredd it, run from it, destiny still arrives." -Thanos 2018 Peace ✌🏻
I don't understand it and it seems sort of out of character for someone who has been as relentless as he has been. It took well over a full minute after Tony snapped before he even started to dust. That was plenty of time to at least try to get the stones back. Sure, he might've failed at the attempt, but he also might have succeeded...I mean, Tony was obviously in no shape to resist him at that point and nobody else was in his immediate path.
Tantalus010 I think it made sense when you think about his quote. He thought he could do no wrong, he was legitimately surprised and in shock that he had lost
I hear people say that Thanos didn't seem mournful or sad for his defeat, but I think my favorite part about this is that he is. He doesn't cry out or say anything, but you can clearly see the look of devastation on his face as his entire army disappears. I like it even more since Thanos thought he was doing the right thing, and now that he's lost he is sure that the universe will suffer because of it.
Not everyone verbalizes the crap out of their feelings at all times. Not everyone expresses themselves in the same way a whiny child would, and I would expect nothing of that sort from Thanos. He's too mature for that shit. He took the loss like a Titan as we all should.
I think he was definitely mourning. And he was doing exactly what he said he would do at the end of it all - he was watching the sun rise on a grateful universe; just not one that was grateful for what he did.
"universe will suffer" Thinks wiping out 50% of population is the solution. With the trends of population explosions seen in the past, the number of people would quickly be the same after 120 years, unless he's planning to do the snap after regular intervals, which he's not because he destroyed the stones. This plan was flawed from the start

This shows you how different Thanos was compared to other movie villains. No cheesy "How could you defeat me" line, no rage towards Tony, none of that. Just acceptance of his defeat. That is a true warrior's way of going out.
They did this movie Thanos really well. They made him way more relatable to people than the original comic book one. But the comic version's come a long way and had a ton of character development and inner reflection over the decades in his various story arcs.

“I know what it's like to lose. To feel so desperately that you're right, yet to fail nonetheless. It's frightening. Turns the legs to jelly.” I always thought it was in reference to this quote from IW but that’s just my poetic side having fun.
This is not just us saying goodbye to Tony Stark, it's also Robert saying goodbye to the character who not only created this amazing franchise but also saved his career and possibly his life.
They should’ve just revealed dooms face at the end of doomsday to show us it was Tony all along. Imagine he did it in front of spider man and many dead avengers besides him
To be fair, he lost the one out of 14 million in which Doctor Strange lived to see it. Remember it was said in the Dr. Strange movie that it was impossible to look past your own death with the Time Stone.
@@shadowcatcherfox5186 That's actually an interesting thing to think about. If anything, within those 14 million outcomes, there was likely a good portion of them where they did ultimately win... But since Doctor Strange can't actually confirm if they do because he can't see anything past his death, he treats these uncertainties as the "not-winning" timelines. I also like to think that he most likely just stopped at a timeline where he both lives *and* foresees where the Avengers won against Thanos, being why he only sees "1 out of 14 million outcomes" (since why bother continuing if you know the exact string of events necessary to win?). Of course, it's still pretty impressive that Thanos is powerful enough where it took over several millions of simulated outcomes before they reached a certain winning timeline, meaning that Doctor Strange had to experiment with A LOT of very specific actions and events themselves. He was likely accounting for so many specific phenomenons and actions in those 14 million outcomes, such as the infamous "Rat saving Ant-Man" scenario, Tony's decision to check the validity of time travelling through the Quantum Realm, or even the survival of specific members of the team (which can go into even more complex shit such as the many actions that these people can make within a situation). Heck, maybe some of the outcomes likely had them make it to the part where they were able to dust Thanos... But perhaps there were enough casualties of important team members where Dr Strange still deemed it the "losing timeline". I'm probably going down a huge rabbit hole with this, but these sorts of things are very fun to speculate about given how intricate Dr. Strange's powers and abilities can be!
All the other realities Thaos doesn't always win, it's just the avengers dont win so 1 reality is that Thanos snapped half of all life away, few weeks later the Avengers find him and kill him and 5 years later the rat never activated the quantum tunnel & scott dies in the quantum realm meaning they never discover time travel... another scenario is that Tony was snapped away with the main half and so time travel is never properly created, etc... not all of them Thanos win.
In Iron Man 3 they said somethin like "A cheap trick and a cheesy one liner. Is that all you got?" "Honey that could be the name of my autobiography" then he beat thanos with exactly that

I love how Thanos wasn’t one of those villains who just yells “NOOO” and some how tries to stop it he just immediately accepted the fact that he lost and let’s it happen
@vaLy No, he had not. Tony literally had to sit there for a few seconds and let the stones be locked in place. And when it was time to snap he just did not. You only assume an obviously exhausted Tony could react in time to an attack of Thanos. And no, he had not. You have lost when it happens. There was not even someone to prptect him from behind. If one of Thanos' goon could have shot him it would also have been over. There are many possibilities. He was just written to not be attacked. That is all.
What Iron Man was thinking when he snapped his fingers: Destroy Thanos and his army completely. But save Thanos for last. I want him to *know* how it feels.
It's just that thanos is a very durable/powerful character so it took longer for the effects of the stones to take hold on him same way spiderman lasted a bit longer while thanos a bit more than that.
I love that expression on his face at 2:03, it's not rage, disbelief, desperation, or any kind of resistance. It's sadness. He lost, and he knows it, and all he can to is try to maintain his dignity as he waits for the true inevitability.

But then to be brought into a new world because you were frozen in time to work with a former weapons dealer, who only found new principles because they discovered to their disgust misuse of their tools that they never intended for but should have saw coming and, it took them being a POW to discover, who is also a lot more inexperienced than you only to be lectured to why didn't you just "cut the wire" as Tony said in the first Avengers. For a majority of Cap's situations and, experiences there was no "wire" to cut. Cap went down knowing he was going to die (so he thought) Not saying Tony didn't lay down his life, he did. But every Avenger was doing that and, all had a chance to survive. Even in the first one with a nuclear warhead on his back Tony knew where to run too after he pushed it up into the portal. That's Cap's point and, problem with Tony. Is that his view of war and, sacrifice is so linear and, not abstract enough to invision being the canary in the coal mine, being the sacrifical lamb, letting your platoon buddies crawl over you on a trip wire so they can live to fight another day while you take the hit. That's Cap's point. That's why Dr. Strange said if he told Tony what he needed to do in End Game to win, they wouldn't win. Because in times where you need to make sacrificial plays, you don't have enough time to stop and think about cutting the wire.
@@shataysianelson9414 I think that shows that Steve was right and also wrong. Tony WAS always trying to find the clever way to avoid the hard choices, but he also was willing to throw himself on the grenade when there was no time for that. In all of the Avengers movies he didn't have time to come up with the cleverest way to "cut the wire" so he made the sacrifice play instead.
When Cody Rhodes beat Roman Reigns at WrestleMania back in April for the Undisputed WWE Championship, it brought me to this. The whole Bloodline Rules match felt just like Endgame here
I absolutely love that Steve looked around all happy thinking "we've done it, we've won" and then he looks at Tony's direction and his expression changes instantaneously. the second look at Steve's face was more of a sad but accepting reaction, "I was wrong, he was the guy who'd make the sacrifice play"
It looks like he was looking at Thanos. Cap and Thanos were the leaders of their respective sides so they get a couple of stare offs. Cap even though he was trying to kill Thanos was not above pitying him.
This scene hits harder than it did when I first saw it in the theaters with my dad. My dad always told me his favorite superhero was Iron man, and I would argue back that Spider-Man is a better hero. We’d go back and forth with that debate. My dad honestly looked like Tony Stark too, so I guess that’s another reason this scene hits hard. My dad passed away back in February at 47 years old. I keep picturing my father when I see this, because, I have a lot of favorite superheroes, and Spider-Man has always been at the top, with Iron man being close to the top. But my dad was the only person in my real life who I saw as my superhero. During his funeral, I even read out the lyrics of a song that always made me and him cry when we heard it, and that was “not all hero’s wear capes” by Owl City. Because like it said in the song “my dads a hero to me.”

Thanos was going to die too... transforming the universe with a single snap... would've even killed him. My theory is that it takes a lot more energy to create than destroy... Hence why killing off half the life in the universe required less power than bringing them back. This time he was struggling because it takes a lot of power to instantly destroy and recreate the universe.
That look on Steve's face at 1:58 says everything. You can see the pain and hate in Cap's eyes towards Thanos, who consequently destroyed all of their lives during Infinity War. Pure chills.

what I really love about Tony is that when he makes mistakes in a battle, he never repeats it. Like how they struggled with getting the gauntlet off Thanos on Infinity War, and now the Endgame version is integrated on his suit so if it falls of the wrong hand, there's no need to struggle on getting it back.
This trend was consistent across the whole MCU. For example, remember in Iron Man 2 when the electricity from whiplash was messing with his suit. Later in Avengers, he had a suit that was better fit for electrical attacks (fight with Thor). He used the fact that Thor powered his suit up in Endgame as well. The one thing Thanos wasn’t counting on: this wasn’t HIS gauntlet, this one was entirely made by Stark. It was Stark’s tech and it was designed to pull such tricks (like transferring the stones) should the situation arise. Outplayed and outsmarted to the max.
Thanos maybe a genius but he was dumb enough to think everyone would be grateful for what he's done and think he would succeed a second time going to the future when they've already fought him and knew what he was capable of this time which led to his forever defeat.

I remember seeing this in theaters on the first day. A lot of you definitely remember it, and this scene hit me so hard. The moment he said that line, my mind went back to me being a kid seeing the first Iron Man and hearing the final line of that movie. I was so hyped after that, and seeing this made me cry. Cause I knew in that moment, it would be the last words he’d ever say. Very Few movies do that and this did it perfectly. It’s an epic cinema moment.
Tony was the only Avenger Thanos actually feared. Tony always prepared and his preparation worried thanos. It just shows how preparation can make a substantial difference
Here's what's so poetic about "I am Iron Man." Each time Tony says it, it comes at the end of something big as the MCU keeps growing. The first time came at the end of the first MCU movie, the second came at the end of the first trilogy, and the third came at the end of the first saga. MCU and "well written"? You're kiddin'. It's always the same formula. What does that even mean "half of all life"? If you'll think about that you have to admit that you need a definition of the term "life" for making "half of all life" disappear. So what is "life"? And what if the stones have another definition of life? You see, it's a plot hole. A big one you cannot deny. And think about Thor 3. Infinity War made Thor 3 irrelevant. And I've never felt more emotionless than at the end of IW. The fact that so many died made it clear that they will come back.
You can see how much Thanos had given, not just in this battle, but also in his quest for the stones. He'd given it his everything. Having lost, he accepted his fate, and allowed himself a moment of true rest. It was truly over for him at this point. No more fighting. No more killing. No more burden of believing himself to be the only one who could save the universe. It must've been a hell of a relief; I don't think he had time for any other emotion. Probably the only moment of peace he ever had. Such a powerful scene.
One thing I appreciate about these films is how Strange knew all along that this was going to be the ending that needed to happen. He foresaw it, and if you watch carefully, you can see subtle hints when Strange and Stark talk. Strange makes choices and reacts to Stark in ways that seem mildly uncharacteristic but not enough to be suspicious UNTIL you realise that he did it to ensure THIS ending happened. Its also why he raises one finger to Stark. Cause you can see Stark having the idea of stealing the stones, and Strange basically tells him "One ending" confirming to Stark that his plan is the only way. As much as I adore Iron Man, Dr Strange is the real MVP. Without his influence and guidance, it wouldn't have been possible.
I can agree because if strange did tell Tony there's one thing he will do, Say No That Was When He Still Had A Life He Had People To Live For But When Here He Realised He's Doing This For The Sake Of The Universe The Whole Earth Billions Of People In Exchange Of One Persons Life
Well you could tell by how nice he's being to Tony throughout. He's not breaking his balls because he has so much honor and respect for him now knowing what he's going to do.
So satisfying to see Thanos watch his entire empire, his life's work, along with all his hopes and dreams, wither away to dust in front of him before he too crumbles away. It's the worst possible ending for a tyrant.
But in a way, it's almost sad. Imagine spending thousands of years building your army, and becoming stronger for every passing year, only for it to end like this.
I don't think he's that sad. Thanos did what he believe was necessary and it's not from a selfish desire even the snap he did was random 50% so it's include his loved one. He even sacrifice gamora for the soul stone. I think a person who had that kind of mindset wouldn't be sad of losing an army or died since even with success he actually gain nothing. Maybe the failure makes him sad but that's it. If you remember the movie he even destroy the stone after, so it's not the power he seek, even he risk his life for destroying the stone. (PS: by no means I agree with what was Thanos doing)

This shows you how different Thanos was compared to other movie villains. No cheesy "How could you defeat me" line, no rage towards Tony, none of that. Just acceptance of his defeat. That is a true warrior's way of going out.
Thanos believed in destiny. Even when he saw himself getting killed he simply accepted it as something that was meant to happen.
They did this movie Thanos really well. They made him way more relatable to people than the original comic book one. But the comic version's come a long way and had a ton of character development and inner reflection over the decades in his various story arcs.

And I am... a miscast
@Us3r739 fully agree. They missed out on a massive cliffhanger. Takes away the suspension.
Imagine being the only Thanos that loses out of 14 million
To be fair, he lost the one out of 14 million in which Doctor Strange lived to see it. Remember it was said in the Dr. Strange movie that it was impossible to look past your own death with the Time Stone.
Get rekt

@@shataysianelson9414 well depends on the way you look at it.
Imagine being Cap that fought and, survived the most ferocious fighting the world had never seen before. You had to face down Red Skull, down the super bomb heading to New York, full well knowing you were going to die.

My dad always told me his favorite superhero was Iron man, and I would argue back that Spider-Man is a better hero. We’d go back and forth with that debate. My dad honestly looked like Tony Stark too, so I guess that’s another reason this scene hits hard.
My dad passed away back in February at 47 years old. what I really love about Tony is that when he makes mistakes in a battle, he never repeats it.
It’s the small things that make these movies amazing
@@oscartrevino461 and after Civil War when rhodey broke his spine, Tony gave Spider man a suit with parachute.

The one thing Thanos wasn’t counting on: this wasn’t HIS gauntlet, this one was entirely made by Stark. It was Stark’s tech and it was designed to pull such tricks (like transferring the stones) should the situation arise. Outplayed and outsmarted to the max.
Hence the reason why Tony couldn't have done this back in Infinity War.

@@user11xman phase 1-3 is peak super hero movies. Phase 4 other than No Way Home is just a really washed and old rag.

@@TheRogueEmpire lol wut?
So satisfying to see Thanos watch his entire empire, his life's work, along with all his hopes and dreams, wither away to dust in front of him before he too crumbles away. It's the worst possible ending for a tyrant.
But in a way, it's almost sad. Imagine spending thousands of years building your army, and becoming stronger for every passing year, only for it to end like this.
It’s also kind of karma cause that what his did future self did and now he feels what everyone else felt
@@thebakeosaurusrex8361 I don't think it's what he feel hahaha
