Oh No! You Drove A Tacoma On The Dry Lake Bed?

  • We got a call for a Toyota Tacoma that had broke through the crust of a dry lake.
Sevier lake is an endorheic lake, which means it has no outlet.
It's also a Salt flat, originally part of Lake Bonneville.
It had 2.5 times the salinity of the ocean.
This Tacoma had broken through the dry salty crust, into the peanut butter mud below!
We drove blue steel as far as we dared, and then unloaded and drove the Jeep and Paul's Tacoma, as far as we thought prudent.
Stretched our winch lines and rope and were able to winch it out.

@@ninemilliondollars these guys were probably the only ones willing to go out there. Maybe 6 people 3 vehicles plus travel. Conditions could be considered hazardous. My guess is around a 1000. Average tow on road is 100 just to hook the car.

I've done some recoveries on those flats. That mud has an incredible amount of suction force. The worst was a Taco on 40" tires, sunk to the floorboards. After some clever traction boards, a winch on a TJ, and a Cummins for an anchor, we got et out. I'd be that kid was cleaning mud out of the undercarriage for years to come!!

Thank you so much for sharing this video. It brought back some very great memories. Back in the '80s we used to go to this place that we used to say if God was going to make somewhere for four-wheel drives to have fun this would be it. Just to get in you had to cross a stream and if we had lots of rain that could be tricky. There was a large mud pit that we used to place back on who could make it through. This one particular night a couple of guys came with a brand new Toyota pickup truck 4x4. They tried to cross the mud pit and did not even come close to going all the way through. So I offered to pull them out. I told him it's your truck and you are the one that's stuck you hook up the chain. And I told him once I blow the horn put it in reverse and give it all she's got. So I blew the horn he's just spinning I pull back so hard it ripped the bumper off of the truck. I jump out of my truck and I'm holding his bumper above my head like a trophy. The bolts were still in the frame it was just the steel bumper pulled over top of the fasteners. Right away he jumps in the back of his truck to see what happened and then started crying. He kept on saying my mom's going to kill me my mom's going to kill me. Everybody at that time was laughing their asses off. I told him you could Hook the chain the right way like we were trying to tell you or you can just sit there and hope your mom finds you. Remember this is the early '80s no cell phones yet. Finally someone told him if you pay me $20 I will go and hook the chain up. He really didn't have much of a choice. So my friend hooked the chain up and I pulled the truck out with no problem. He wouldn't let me keep the bumper and nobody ever saw him again.
When I saw what you were dealing with here it put a big smile on my face. With not having a lot of things these days to smile about it felt good remembering the good old days.
I enjoyed your video and look forward to watching more of them.

Came across a pickup stuck in a dry lake bed years ago, somewhere by Baker, Calif. He was down to the door handle on one side. Hired a backhoe that came out to try and get him out. The entire arm of the back hoe sank into the lake bed. Stayed there till dusk, we left and he was no better off than the precious several hours. Never knew how he got out. I had the job on camp move convoys of driving the International 190 R series with the aircraft landing tyres with 6 wheel drive and massive winch up front and sometimes all day and all night, I'd be climbing one dune after the next just to turn around at top and then winch up about every other vehicle on the entire crew. One night well after midnight I ran out across the top of a dune and fell down in the sand and went to sleep while they were all waiting at the bottom for the winch line to come down. It took a while to find me. I was a kid. 20yrs old. I was simply exhausted........ Boy that was a hard life but I loved every minute of it and would go back in a heartbeat and do it all again if I could..... Early 2019, we stopped at the edge of this dry lake while we were going back to Ely, Nevada. There was nobody in sight but there was a sign posted with a phone number on it when you get off the highway saying that if you get stuck in the lake, you would be charged so much for getting help. I can't remember what the actual amount was, it was something like $1000. Thank you Matt for that awesome recovery and reminding me of that time when I traveled through there. Good job to Matt, Paul, Ed, and the whole crew for a successful recovery 👍👍 PS..I forgot to mention this is Highway 50, it's known as"The Loneliest Road in America". It stretches from Utah and across Nevada. There's hardly any traffic at night but you may see eye shines from the forest when you go over the mtn passes, maybe Bigfoot eye shines. I learned to always gas up, I almost got stranded one time but luckily I reached a town before I ran out of gas. It's like 2 to 3 hrs drive between towns on this road. Check out the Hotel Nevada in Ely, it has the sidewalk of Stars and has names of famous people who stayed at that hotel like Charley Pride and Lyndon B. Johnson. It has a Denny's connected to the casino floor inside with the hotel upstairs. It's a cool place to visit plus there's a Radio Shack across the street called The Greek filled with alot of cool stuff and they still carry the portable cassette players too 👍👌
