Alright, now that the build’s underway, I need to start planning a family trip. Where’s the best place to take the family overlanding in Texas? Drop your suggestions below!

Make trips out to utah and Arizona you can still offroad anywhere I think Texas is mostly private land so you need permission unless you're just doing the campground in a national park thing bit that's weak sauce. You want to actually use that rig.
"No more crazy Tim plans" Land Cruiser enters the screen. Hahaha. I've been building an overland Sequoia for a few years now and it's not even close. Expensive? Yup. 5 grand for suspension minimum so all of the extra stuff doesn't kill you going down the road. It's kinda like in DudeDads boat video "That'll be about a thousand". But it's so much fun.
All you really need is a rear bumper set up that allows you to carry gas, water cans and a tractor jack. A roof rack to carry tents, tarps and camo netting and camping stuff on top to keep your interior clean for food, gun & ammo storage. IMHO, No roof top tent. I'm in Appalachia so I need a chain saw and a fuel can with mixed oil/gas for the chain saw to handle trees that fall over trails. I like to hang the chain saw and gas/oil can on the rear bumper also to keep fuel fumes out of the cab.
Unless he needs a better approach angle, that ARB is the best bumper he could have for animal strikes/armor. They didn't mention if it was already 3 locked either.
Tim's a badass that you would want to have a beer with. No ego, goes to someone who had more knowledge than him with the enthusiasm of a kid on Christmas morning. Hell yeah Dude. Rip that thing up to Canada for an outdoor adventure.
Don’t do a rooftop tent it will make you top-heavy. Make sure you have front and rear lockers and quick disconnect for sway bars. You want to do complete skid plates underneath all the way from the front radiator to the rear gas tank. Don’t forget the chrome Molly axle shafts and Adams driveshafts. Take a look at patriot campers you can tow them behind the vehicle. They’re very light. They’re very rugged. They are made to beat off-road and then a bad situation. You can disconnect and leave it behind like a rooftop tent.
Disconnecting sway bars are beneficial, but usually only warranted on hardcore crawling trails like the Rubicon. Most of the wheeling in Texas will be mild to moderate, the sway bars can stay on. If you want a set of disconnecting sway bars, check out Land Cruiser Phil's google website called Land Cruiser Products. It's not necessary to have a full flat belly skid, this isn't a rock buggy. If you want a serious skid to protect the trans/t-case, check out Iron Pig Offroad or Slee. Delta VS makes good products as well. Your radius arms and rear links protect the rest of the car. Don't skip the rock sliders. White Knuckle makes a good set. Keep your rocker panels in good shape. Metal Tech 4x4 sells sliders with catalytic converter protection as well (important for the 80 series) You don't need chromoly shafts, they wear quicker, especially on a full time 4WD vehicle. The stock 30/27 shafts are plenty strong and can last 200k miles. They also don't make noise when they wear. Unnecessary to upgrade a drive shaft unless the joints are failing or you're pushing 37"+ tires. No comment about a tow behind trailer on a pig like the 80. If anything, you'll want to regear your diffs, maybe even the low range and high range in your transfer case as well. Overdrive/Underdrive your transfer case will be a smart move for a Do-It-All rig. 33"-35" tires will fit with a small amount of lift. That's the sweet spot.
Welcome to the toyota world. Us in Hawaii were buying Toyotas back in the 70s and 80s when yall were into fords/chevys/dodges. Then when I deployed and seen everyone flipping out on the toyota overseas, it felt like home lol. Here in Hawaii we buy Toyotas because they are built well, engines/drivetrain last a lifetime, and they dont rust from the inside out. Being on an island with sea spray everywhere, off roading to go diving, fishing, hunting or camping, Toyotas could handle it the best compared to domestic trucks. I love my 86 landcruiser, 89 pickup (2wd single cab) and now 2024 trd tundra. Well, experienced my first negative thing with the tundra not having tow hooks and now dealing with the engine recall. I might just sell it and stay with the tried and true old school lol
This is great. Subscribing for more. While my character in my post-apocalypse/post-nuclear story I'm writing has a Land Cruiser, it's being towed by his survivalist's bus and going to be used for a "just in case we need to get out of here and leave the bus" scenario. It also has some customization, but not as much as his survivalist's bus. He worked on the bus while down in a bunker (there's a road leading into it) for 7 years before leaving (because reasons). There was plenty of supplies down there he was able to make use of, off-road tires, the roof of the bus has solar panels, a rack in the back of it that stores extra gas jugs, a 100-gallon diesel fuel tank (came with it already), the front has a snow plow, and the sides have extra metal plating for protection against pew pews, and places to store important supplies one would need on the road. The interior pretty much looks like an interior of an RV: small kitchen toward the front with a table big enough for 4 people to sit in), a small bathroom (one side is a shower and the other is for the toilet with a sink above it), a modern-style sleeper soda one of his kids can sleep on that's right behind the driver's seat, a bunk bed that's located above the driver and passenger seat for his other kid, and a small bedroom all the way in the back of the bus (which includes my character's small armory (he's a military vet).
You picked an excellent vehicle. Looking forward to seeing the build. I've had my 1996 Land Cruiser for several years and use it for camping and wheeling trails like the Rubicon. 40" tires look good on the Land Cruisers just saying and Icon makes the best suspension lift in my opinion
Test it out in Marble Falls, then Big Bend in October. Through Las Cruces and Carlsbad Caverns NP to Taos and Red River then down through Palo Duro canyon and Caprock Canyon on the way home if you want to go a little farther. Build a trailer up to go with it and haul gear so you can keep the inside for kids and keep it lighter. You will need to obtain a dedicated truck gun. I’m thinking .308 AR or Benelli M4. Better yet, both.
Tim, you need these axles. RCV axles and better gearing! If they haven't suggested it already. Nate with dirtlifestyle built a pretty bullet proof overlander of that truck. He has done incredible builds. Take it from alpha to sigma!
ARB front bumper, 4x4 Labs rear bumper, Bowfin roof rack. These are among the best “affordable” options. Delta makes basically the best rear bumper and extras as far as suspension.
dude just discovered what an overland rig is. Good choice going with Toyota. Ive had many LCs that were built for this purpose but landed on the 5th gen 4runner for a little more practicality
Nicely bought, she looks great. Finding an 80 with a rear hatch that's not rotted out around the glass is rare. Building your 80 is almost as fun as wheeling it. Triple locked and good tires will take you places you really shouldn't take your family- there were times where I was fairly certain I was going to wipe out three generations of my family in a single trail ride due to the stupidly capable nature of that truck. Just do yourself a favor and never sell it- these trucks are like a Garand; they've got a soul that digs into you deep and won't ever get old.
Great video. Can't wait to see more. I'm a huge Toyota fan and now a subscriber of your channel. NOT a vet but so thankful for all you and others have done for our country. Thanks.
Tim, I need this Toyota series in my life. All I own is Toyota. A tundra, a Tacoma and a Corolla (gas mileage) 😂. I own a ranch in Texas and I need this.
That’s the goal here is to be able to explain and demonstrate the process. I’ll tell you so far two months into it. It is so much fun. We are trying to be thrifty while we pick the absolute best product in every category.
My 1992 80 series has 1000 labor hours and 475ftlbs torque. It's a lot of work. Starting with a 3fe 80 makes it a steeper uphill battle than later models.
Sick build. The 80 series is one of the classic Aussie off roaders with loads of them still rippen up the Aussie outback. Would love to see a 1HDT in this one. No stronger diesel out there and you can run it on some fuel mixes if your careful when the apocalypse comes. GET SOME!
That’s sick man! Hope u do some sort of Matte finish, Brown or Hunter green w/ Black Rhino Line access…Hoping ur thumbnail is an indication of how it’s gonna look! 👍👍
I remember getting out of the Navy in 1992 and driving from California to Florida. Texas took 13 hours to drive through. I got stopped by Texas State troopers for speeding. They asked if i was a veteran , i said yeah i was in Desert Storm. They said alright Thank you for your service have a nice night.
This is awesome. You should collab with some other SOF dudes and do a big overland trip, I'd watch the hell out of it if it was a YT series!! Have fun with the build. I have a 4Runner TRD that I'm constantly building and it has been a blast. Most of these Yota's are tanks.
I feel your pain Tim, I just went through this building out my 2021 Toyota Tundra(last year of non aspirated V8), $50,000 and many sleepless nights later I was blown away with how nice my truck came out.
I had Thor Off-Road completely upgrade my Power Wagon from the doors down with a Carli Pintop system with Carli radius arms, bumpers, custom hitch pass-thru for the tire carrier, 37's and hundreds of hours more work. It turned out so good, I have their logo on the rear quarter panel of each side of the truck using a quarter panel vinly wrap..
If you need any help with picking parts on the 80 let me know. I have spent more time than i would like to admit pouring over the different things made for these trucks. They are amazing platforms.
Nice video!I would highly recommend garner state park in concan as a vacation spot. There is a river there that you can swim or inner tube in and many great hikes. Thanks again for the great content, Tim!

No. Pictures and videos of my feet are behind the pay wall. 😂😂😂
Next up selling used socks to fund the land cruiser build hahaha

I love that you’re building a LC. I love the 80 series. I drive a 1993 Toyota LC Prado (70 series light duty). She’s badass
