If the sand is somewhat firm, sometimes if you let about half the air out of the tires they will "'pancake" out to get more surface area to allow you to drive out. But you better air the tires back up very soon or you risk tire damage and danger later. Saying this though, I have to add that you do need mechanical sense for what works and what doesn't and the risks involved before you start messing around. I've gotten myself off a California beach (one time) and out of Montana snow & mud (numerous times as a teenager) this way in the 1960's driving a '55 Oldsmobile. Later in life doing ranch work and managing an isolated backcountry lodge I used this method many times with 4WD vehicles to avoid getting into trouble or to get out of trouble on slippery hillsides, etc. Call a pro when in doubt, and I don't see how a person could do any better than getting Matt & crew. Top notch people.
I suppose I better add that much would depend on the particular tire design and profile. If reducing air pressure does very little to increase the tire's contact area with the ground, then all you are doing is asking for trouble.
