I recall hearing about Game Freak actually keeping unused designs to use for reference and inspiration in later generations. The leaks do seem to prove that true. One obviously being Leafeon was originally designed for Gen 2 before it got cut and later redesigned for Gen 4, but there are a lot of examples of the cut Pokemon and ideas that you could imagine may have influenced later Pokemon (the Farfetch'd evolution may have inspired Sirfetch'd for instance and beta Dunsparce reminds me of Silicobra and Sandaconda, the former in particular). There is another sprite for a Girafarig pre-evo that only exists as a backsprite, showing what looks to be a pre-evolution of the Girafarig we know from the final. It appears in the '99 demo if you use the white blob in battle. Evolution data also exists suggesting that Girafarig was at one point a 3-stage line, so I think we could have had that as the Basic, present day Girafarig as the Stage 1 and Spaceworld '97 Girafarig as the Stage 2 final evo.
The backsprite appears to be more an early Girafarig's backsprite. I don't think it's a mid-stage as nothing has pointed to it ever having a midstage but rather just an early version of the final Girafarig
@@TheObsessiveGamer But Girafarig's final version was in the '99 demo as the evolution of the blob that has the backsprite and there's evolution data in the files that points to Girafarig evolving into a stage 2. Not only that but if you consider it a 3-stage line you get to see Girafarig's second head grow into a full head. The second evo is called mitei05 in the data. The file that references it is called SHINKA.OLD. We have no evidence of what mitei05 actually looked like, so it using the '97 Girafarig sprite is pure speculation, but it fits thematically to have a young giraffe with an eye in its tail that evolves into an adult giraffe with a small head in its tail that evolves into a pushmi-pullyu with a fully-formed second head.
Am I the first to notice the resemblance between the early Celebi design and the final Sneasel? Perhaps it was a rejected Celebi sprite that they felt was too good to lose so they just modified it a little and stuck it on a Pokémon they already had programmed. Also, the tanuki probably evolved into Zigzagoon in Gen 3, who is a hybrid of raccoon and tanuki.
Interesting. I mean the head has some resemblance. Maybe some inspiration there by potentially the same artist? And Zigzagoon is more a REAL Tanuki as opposed to the folklore was used here which is what I meant
16:18 Zigzagoon is a Tanuki actually. it's called the Tiny Raccoon pokemon in the states because an incorrect translation of Tanuki at the time was Raccoon (and some 'official' anime translators still translate Tanuki as raccoon)
I would love to see Beta Pokémon be brought back in Legends: Arceus. Gorochu, Beta Celebi, the things wearing animal furs on their bodies... It all sounds amazing to have.
Would be great if they did a game that took place in the Ultra Dimension. Where you play as a character in a parallel world and the Pokemon you find are these designs.
The pokemon at 18:00 actually resembles Lairon a lot with the back. Obviously the lack of arms doesn't help, but I initially thought that was just a beta Lairon.
8:40 Not only did Honooguma eventually turn into Teddiursa, Honooguma's 3rd stage evolution is Dainabea which most likely refrenced/inspired the design for Ursaluna in Legends Arceus. Dainabea and Ursaluna are both third stage evolution Pokemon in their respective lines, are both large, quadrupedal bears with forehead marks and both have large manes of fur in the front halves of their bodies.
The ninja flying squirrel is a cool concept, would be cool if they use it again on future games Also, the only tanooki we've got as a Pokémon is Zigzagoon, a Pokémon I like and is really cute, but has nothing to do with myths related to tanookies and their magical powers, a big shame as we have a few fox Pokémon based on kitsunes and their magic (like Ninetales and Zoroark), but no tanookies, so I hope we get magic based tanookies (like a Psychic, Ghost or Fairy type) in the future, it feels kinda wrong to don't have them
Ah glad you noticed that Zigzagoon is onl a normal real like Tanuki. Yeah we definitely need the folklore ones as they appear in virtually any other Japanese medium. Gen 2 would have been perfect considering its ultra classical Japanese theme
The "snakelike thing" that evolved into Gorutesu could be based on a conodont, an extinct relative of lampreys that had rather cartoonishly large eyes.
I personally feel like the baby worm (pre-evo Dunsparce) would be a very nice fit for the Viking sailboat pokemon since they both rock the stripes and look like they could fit together.
Leosolg (lion with long hairs) and Skelossil (the skeleton dinosaur) are my favorite but Anchorage (the anchor shark). Even if they won't see the day fortunately pokemon wack created them as playables pokemons
Bruh, imagine if the ghost design from 15:33 had actually been left in the final version of RBY instead of the one we got. Since Missingno is sometimes associated with the ghost sprite, it would be funny if it was associated with the cute dropped design.

@@TheObsessiveGamer I think there first time i saw stuff on it was from Dr.lava shortly after the leak as he covers beta pokemon stuff, people were mentioning that it was Steel type and there is a fakimon hack somewhere where they use the beta pokemon and Cyndaquil on the list is down as a pure Steel type. It's been a while so I can't pinpoint the source where i saw it all.
Did I only noticed that a lot of these ideas have surfaced up one way or another later down the line?! More specifically, in Sinnoh?! No wonder Gen 4 was always my fav gen... there was always something "different" about it. Like that snow bunny pokemon. If that was indeed the case, than the snow bunny's typing would resemble Snover. Also that "Viking ship" pokemon... I would assume it would be Water/Ghost type. Given its appearance and all, I would assume they made a ghost ship type pokemon. But instead we got Frillish.
Yeah Gen 4 always felt like a successor gen of Gen 2... which also fits considering they take place at roughly the same time. I almost think Snover could have been an evolution of the snow bunny but then they scrapped the original bunny
Thank you! The blurred Pokemon are from this chart created by the Helix Chamber as there are 6 generation 1 Pokemon we don't know what they are, thus they have been given these blurred spots for now.
The chick at 12:04 is interesting. Since it's evolution becomes a G clef, looking at it's head reminds me more of a F Clef (Bass Clef), without the 2 dots since that wouldn't make sense to have, than it does an upside-down quarter note.

Very well put together and informative video! Kudos, my friend.
Thank you very much!
Hoping we one day see these in some form of a revived state
Would overquill kinda count?
@@solounwapodemuchos Hmmmm...
Yeah, I'd say it would.
Would be great if they did a game that took place in the Ultra Dimension. Where you play as a character in a parallel world and the Pokemon you find are these designs.
Considering a multiverse does exist in Pokemon, they really should do that. No one would have to complain about the Dex either that way lol
Manbo1 is the descendant of Mambo number 5
Heck
The baby snake makes me think of Zygarde's cells :P
Otherwise a whole other generation could be made with cut pokes :P
Oh good eye there. Yeah i've been saying how with all these cut 'Mons that they easily could make another gen of Pokemon.
The pokemon at 18:00 actually resembles Lairon a lot with the back. Obviously the lack of arms doesn't help, but I initially thought that was just a beta Lairon.
Maybe I had some influence on the design? Could be the same artist
For such simple looking designs, the Hoppip line sure went through a tons of iterations w minor adjustments here & there.
I always thought of Zigzagoon as being a Tanuki.
Zigzagoon is based on a REAL tanuki. The tanuki I mentioned here was referring to the ones from folklore which this Pokemon very much was based on.
8:40
Not only did Honooguma eventually turn into Teddiursa, Honooguma's 3rd stage evolution is Dainabea which most likely refrenced/inspired the design for Ursaluna in Legends Arceus.
Dainabea and Ursaluna are both third stage evolution Pokemon in their respective lines, are both large, quadrupedal bears with forehead marks and both have large manes of fur in the front halves of their bodies.
It seems that the feather/feathers on the top of the pre-evolution of the music bird line's head was later used for criketune.
yfw the music bird could have had the same cry as a Cricketune :P
Hahaha! That squirrel!! I saw some designs I have never seen before! 💕💕💕
Glad you enjoyed these designs. I do think that squirrel also could have become Emolga down the road
JC i didn't know they're was even more cut pokemon's outside the initial leaked from the Spaceworld.
I was gonna say that the beta of Sneasel looked like a silhouette of Mecha Sonic crouching, honestly.
We now need our Steel/Dark type Sneasal that looks like Mecha Sonic :P
Great job!! I was looking forward to this video and it did not disappoint! This channel is criminally underrated!
Thank you! We are growing, so hopefully won't be underrated for too much longer
The ninja flying squirrel is a cool concept, would be cool if they use it again on future games
Also, the only tanooki we've got as a Pokémon is Zigzagoon, a Pokémon I like and is really cute, but has nothing to do with myths related to tanookies and their magical powers, a big shame as we have a few fox Pokémon based on kitsunes and their magic (like Ninetales and Zoroark), but no tanookies, so I hope we get magic based tanookies (like a Psychic, Ghost or Fairy type) in the future, it feels kinda wrong to don't have them
Ah glad you noticed that Zigzagoon is onl a normal real like Tanuki. Yeah we definitely need the folklore ones as they appear in virtually any other Japanese medium. Gen 2 would have been perfect considering its ultra classical Japanese theme
that fishbird would have been on my childhood team, no joke
Fish bird needs to be protected :3
The small snake “pre-evolution” to dunsparce looks a lot like Shellos
Oh yeah, maybe the idea of the design was reused there next gen?
3:59 they found the front sprites for these guys and the other Gen 1 Pokémon which only had back sprites! :D
I like how cyndaquils shiny sprite is a remnant of it's beta sprite
oh damn I didn't even realize that there.
@@TheObsessiveGamer watching the video seems a lot of generation 2 shiny sprites are remnants of their beta/alpha colors.
I wish the Skeleton Pokémon was real
I really wonder how it's lore would go. Unfinished revival of a fossil?
@@TheObsessiveGamer me too
Can't believe I haven't seen these already! I really can't keep up with all the gen 2 leaks in the last few years!
Leosolg (lion with long hairs) and Skelossil (the skeleton dinosaur) are my favorite but Anchorage (the anchor shark). Even if they won't see the day fortunately pokemon wack created them as playables pokemons
I have played the Super Gold 97 mod, but I wasn't aware the first two are in it considering it goes beyond the 97 demo?
Actually komala is from generation 7 not 6 😊
Whoops, there's my one mistake lol
I wonder if that elephant Pokemon was also a prototype design of Phanpy or Donphan
I don't think so, they most likely co existed.
Rai (Raikou's beta design) looked kinda like me in high school lol
I was more beta Suicune in college myself :P
Oooh the baby bird carried by the stork pokemon looks like the bird on the OG Falkner sprites shoulder
Bruh, imagine if the ghost design from 15:33 had actually been left in the final version of RBY instead of the one we got. Since Missingno is sometimes associated with the ghost sprite, it would be funny if it was associated with the cute dropped design.
Beta Remoraid: "It's also a gun!"
I love this gun fish who can be one an Octo Tank
Wich makes me belive they wanted keep It but the censored to avoid any backslash
@@dynamon911nz Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if that was the reason. Ironic considering later on we got Inteleon's Gigantamax form who had a rifle lol
@@TheObsessiveGamer i belive they want put these weapon hybrid creatures as intended design But you know The heavly afraid on the rating or something to backpedal the idea. Wich might be really neat on paper putting an gun like pokemon would be intresting to see, but you know how it works for any backslash "look what happened to jinx".
That was so awesome! Keep up the good work! ^_^
Thank you! Got plenty planned!
Cynadquil was already confirmed to previous be a Steel type in the beta before it became a starter. Hence grey-ish green spikes. It's not Ice type. It had the move "Metal Claw".
which when you think about it. it was weird that Scizor got the move but it has pincers, but i think it got the move due it was fully finished and they didn't want to redo it.
No Other steel type pokemon in Gen2 had claws.
Where was this confirmed? I wouldn't mind do a minor update on this in the pinned comments if I can get a source for it.
As always, thorough narration and I love the format of your vids!
At 19:33 though there is a pokemon blurred out? 135?
Thank you! The blurred Pokemon are from this chart created by the Helix Chamber as there are 6 generation 1 Pokemon we don't know what they are, thus they have been given these blurred spots for now.
You made so many interesting connections! Great job with research.
Thank you!
The chick at 12:04 is interesting. Since it's evolution becomes a G clef, looking at it's head reminds me more of a F Clef (Bass Clef), without the 2 dots since that wouldn't make sense to have, than it does an upside-down quarter note.
Note that I can't actually read music lol but thanks for the clarifying it!
@@TheObsessiveGamer Oh not a problem! I didn't mean for this to be shade of any kind. I know many people can't read music so being trained to read music, I try to use my knowledge to spark conversation in good faith.
@@rhystilshadowhelm oh I know no worries! just like to also let people know my illiteracy in music lol Thanks for clarifying again!
I hope and pray that the ninja squirrel gets into gen 9 bc it’s so adorable
Could even be an Emolga evolution :P
16:27 the frog has resemblances to totodile
Oh yeah guess the head does kinda look like it
The Stork Pokemon looks like a early version of Gen VIII's Bombirder which could had inspired that Scarlet & Violet Pokemon.
I feel like the little worm with feathers might be a pre-evo for the bagworm/moth line
Which little worm with feathers is that you are referring to?
The one you had theorized was a pre-eco for beta dunsparce
Just an idea because of the similar patterned bits on the moth
Amazing finds here. Nice to see the Poketeam having the ability to discern which Pokes were good and which ones needed work. I would delete the Bod with the white hat out of the vid though!
Thank you! Yeah I was somewhat unsure if I should include that photo but it was for educational purposes and from an educational Japanese site, so I thought maybe it's okay to include.
6:30 That looks like an early version of Castform to me! 😮
It even has the booba legs xD
I m looking for a hackroom with this pokemon, exists?
4:37
reminds me of the purple drowze I sometimes encountered in the grass south of goldenrod in my old silver copy.
Dam you encountered a few SHINY Drowzees? talk about good chances
@@TheObsessiveGamer
No, it was not shiny.
Encoutered a purple sprite Drowzee multiple times, whenever captured, the sprite was back to normal.
Have just come to belive it had something to do with the contacts.
It makes sense why so many were cut since many look bland or are redundant babies. Still, I have no idea WHY they'd keep Igglybuff and Cleffa in favor of that beta tangrowth or something else cooler since those 2 are also redundant babies.
The scorpion head looks like eternatus lol
oh yeah it kinda sense
The Vulpix prevolution could be named trails
mfw i'd have named it Miles "Trails" Prowers as a result :P
It's likely the cut fossil got referenced for Tirtouga and Carracosta as well.
you know what that skeleton pokemon actually reminds me of and that was popping off in the late 90's early 00's for kids? it reminds me of skullgreymon a digimon which is just a large skeletal monster. maybe gamefreak took inspiration from that.
it's a bass clef and treble clef
amazing video!!! loved this
Thank you!
HERE WE GO!!
hoping one day someone could make a romhack or something inspired using the cut assets and storylines and such
Early 99 hoppip family line had the colors of their shiny ✨
I gotta add something that you forgot. In one of volpixs pokedex enteries, it says that it's tails split from it's original 3 tails
Not that I forgot but more that I didn't really need to mention it, but I think in retrospect it wouldn't have been a bad idea lol
Blissey's "pipe things" are eggs.
Oh? Guess that makes sense. They looked kinda sharp, so I assumed otherwise lol
my theory is that cyndaquil was originally the grass starter (the spikes being thorns)
did i just get fucking spoiled on hisuian arcanine's form on a Gold and Silver cut content video out of all things
Is that a spoiler? It's just a regional form, not story related. GameFreak shows these off all the time in their trailers
@@TheObsessiveGamerwell gamefreak didn't show hisuian Arcanine did it? I did get the reveal 'spoiled'. It's not that big of a deal but still kinda ehh
In a parallel universe, those pokemon in the beta were actually in the final but we would never know and spacegold was the final with the skateboard, evil oak, team rocket and giovanni in gen 2 along with gen 1s 256 pokemon available because of robots and technology being available in the late 80s in that parallel universe. If we were ever to time travel and wrap through different dimensions and universe we would see things differently.
Beta >>>>>>>>>>>> Final
I don’t care how much hate I get.
cool dino skeleton.
That Wobberfet design looks like it was recycled for Castform
Wouldn't surprise me if the same artist decided to recycle it there
That is the most cursed kiwi I have ever seen
There is a theory that this one may be more a zombie since it's eyes are rolled back, so maybe that's why lol
look how long its legs are, that kiwi is hiiiiigh
Actually the Cutting Room Floor described it as a stupid bird pose look
thanks for the video
a good video and keep up the great videos
Thank you!
@13:01 Watching this now after SV came out and I'm thinking this guy become Bombirdier in SV?? :O
That 96 politoed is awesome and what it should have been
I think they probably scrapped a lot of the betas because they looked too dark or scary. Some had more of a menacing or uncanny look. Still really cool dssigns though.
