I really like the description of how liking a Normal feels more special. If you like a Pokemon in one of the other 17 types, part of that will probably have to do with its type. Normal types however aren't special. They're like a placeholder. The type you give to either an animal or a creature that no other type would fit. It's why people don't like Normal dual types and why they're probably hard to make. Why give something with a fantastical ability a type that is use for something without a fanstical ability. I love the Normal type because I feel like it has more to prove at a baseline and when they manage to do that, it impresses me greatly.
I feel like the Normal/Fairy combo is such an oxymoron. Something completely normal/common/boring, but also whimsical/fantastical and based on folklore or something that doesn't actually exist. Lol.
normal dual types is a really cool typing imo, i didnt know people didnt like them. i like the idea of a fantastical mon that still manages to have usual enough features to warrant the normal type. it seems like a hard balance to strike and a lot of normal dual types do it really well.
I loved Peasunny's design, but maybe you could have linked it more to Calyrex visually by giving it something like a basket on its head? Like it's woven out of grass and carries its crops in it, and it holds the basket with its ears.
I really like this version of Calyrex. The concept and execution are great. Gengar as a Totoro Catbus is perfect too. You have the Pokemon style down so well and I'd love to see more videos about that design philosophy and shape language when creating Fakemon.
Hey, that's a great idea! Ron's creations are so quintessentially authentic to me that few other artists come close, and I'd love to see his thought process on how he feels out the correct proportions and shapes to match the official Pokémon style.

Retired hawlucha with base 118 speed and coach is actually terrifying. Max it's speed EV, give it an air balloon and use swords dance for garchomp then sweep with EQ on the first turn. Omg the possibilities are endless.
Coach is really unique and probably a little broken. Its really rare to you be able to buff another pokémon stats and with his high speed, it would be easy to Swords Dance to strong move from your ally, and its good defenses would make it hard to counter, but it would kinda depends on its movepool, without a recovering move and a good support moveset it would be just ok with its middling stats and typing.
Prankster taunt would totally shut it down as would fake out and quicker mons with status moves. Kind of a cool ability. Probably best it can't learn swords dance though!
i know this video is from a few months ago now, but theres a type of bacteria that is often carried in cat saliva that cats can transfer to humans when they scratch you. the resulting infection is called cat scratch disease, and considering the poison type is often associated with disease, normal type gengar being a cat is quite fitting!
When I first saw your normal Gengar, without knowing your inspirations, I thought it was Studio Ghibli meets Alice in Wonderland. I think you nailed this normal Gengar.

I think making the darmanitan slower actually makes it more of a threat since it’ll likely get powered up each turn, unless its under trick room but then its probably been hit before trick room is set up
I would've split the tips of the 'peasant' form Calyrex you made, to allude to both pitchforks (which were often two-pronged for a long time, as it only requires lashing a split branch to form that), and to the eventual full split that Calyrex itself has into the four ears.
Calyrex is a BUNNY?!?!?! to me, it always looked like some weird deer with big antlers.. while i definitely do see the hare- and rabbit elements, i absolutely think it's inspired by more than one type of animal. and combining a _leporid_ (to use the fancy term) and a deer is very creative in my opinion. too bad the execution is kinda... eh.. and, of course - rest in peace, Pompal
The coach ability is interesting, Retired hawlucha would definitely know swords dance, but alcremie exists and has decorate wich would boost both atk and spatk. However i can see the coach ability being usefull with stat boosting items, like weakness policy, blunder policy, or cell battery, maybe even adrenaline orb. There are also of course the berries, it could finally make use of the one that boosts Defense or the one that boosts spDef that are normally useless because if you are low at hp, the stat buffs won't help. This could also maybe use the starf berry. No matter what, the ability fits pokemon perfectly considering there is a move called Coaching that boosts allies atk.
One, this take on normal Pokémon was really interesting. You tackled something that I also feel about normal Pokémon, and I bet most people think as well, but your idea of having to give normal Pokémon an even bigger USP *because* they're normal is actually very true, like with Zangoose, and one my favorites, Aipom. Second, that Normal Gengar design was insanely good.
Oh hey, so this is kinda awkard. So I'm the person behind the Normaldex tumblr blog, where I try to do exactly what's going on in this video for every Pokemon from gens 1-5. It's taken a while (I've found spriting tends to take longer than using PS or a pencil to make an illustration), especially when I've had multiple hiatuses due to laptop death (I'm currently on one right now). I'm not hoping to hijack this video from a larger creator for self-sponsorship, so I'm not going to link my blog, but it is cool to see that there are other people who care enough about Normal-type Pokemon to do such retypes. Keep it up!
There is said to have once been a plant that was so effective as a contraceptive that it was over harvested into extinction in ancient times. Ive always thought that would he a cool grass/ghost type pokemon concept and could have a unique ability that decreases the chances of finding an egg at day care however ups the chances of those eggs containing shiny or hidden ability pokemon. Just put it in all the biggest egg groups and you have a highly useful pokemon.
Would Coach-Hawlucha be OP? Good defensive type, honestly bad defensive stats but not abysmal, transfers stat boosts. Learns Hone Claws, which is a way of getting +accuracy onto mons with casino moves. Also learns Agility and Bulk up. But I think what might really make him OP is that he learns Entrainment via egg move. You could use entrainment on a Falinks or a Kommo'o. You could get a Blastoise with Shell smash next to a pokemon with Defiant.
oh the darmanitan got me thinking about an normal darumaka, were you set a wish with an npc and the wish is something like "win battles" and when the goal is reached the darumaka evolves and receives an eye :)
13:10 I dont think any pokemon have an ability like this, but there is the move "Coaching" that does something similar. Basically bulk-up for your ally. Seems pretty balanced tbh. You can already do something similar to this, but it requires set up and baton pass. Meanwhile, with this, the pokemon you are passing stats onto has to be out on the field along with the set-up pokemon, leaving it open to damage, ailments and debuffs as well. Speaking of, Hawlucha can already learn coaching via TM, and it also has access to baton pass for the other strategy. The only buff moves it really gets is bulk-up, swords dance, and hone claws.
Tht Hawlucha re-design could be Hawlucha's evolution wth a couple changes like couple of maybe proportion changes a name change and probably keeping it's fighting type status along ahh the normal typing but in the context of the video all the designs make sense and look good aswell 😁
@@Freecss111 yea tht would be interesting and i also had another idea of it being a regional variant of either wht it is now as a retired normal type or my idea of a normal fighting type u got good idea tho if say would be interesting
I think it would be cool if the Hawlucha's ability was when any positive stat change would be given to the Pokemon the partner Pokemon get it, but also all negative changes would go to the Pokemon with the ability. For example the opponent brings a mon with intimidate. Hawlucha will take the team mates attack drop and if the team mate uses superpower Hawlucha will take the debuff. I have no clue how good that would be but I can see some good strategies.
These are all so great. Pompal is peak I could see it being a real Pokémon, & I would love having a Hawlucha like that! Ron, I have always drawn Pokémon since my first game Pokémon Gold. I recently realized I've made fan art & fakemom since 99. I kept my drawings to myself bc I cared too much ab what others thought ab my art. In part for being bullied for liking Pokémon. You inspired me to start releasing my work along with the many great guest artists... so I made a fakemon region, I'm hoping to start releasing on X🐦 soon. I say all that to say thank you brother for being you & for what you do.
This makes me think, if Legend Arceus had been released after Scarlet and Violet perhaps we could have seen something like ancient convergent forms. maybe we still could if they make another game in the Legends series. it would really help with lore just like you've done here
What if Growlithe was a Normal type? I figured maybe it can be designed after plushies, like how Tandemaus and Stufful are designed to look like plushies. And Lucario, with a Normal type, could still have qualities of a fighter, but would be more based on a Shaolin monk's fighting techniques. Peaceful unless provoked, kinda like how Bugs Bunny would be peaceful unless he's provoked or attacked by his enemies.
Are you sure? Cause they seem to be too predictable. The way I see it...... If Arcanine was a Ice/Fighting type, its aggressive behavior can be similar to Siberian Husky and Alaskan Malamutes. And if both Dwebble and Crustle are Ground/Fire types, instead of rocks, they made homes out of glass. Cause I heard that real life hermit crabs can make their own homes made out of trash what they find in beaches, and glass is no exception.
Darmanitan's stat spread is a really confusing one. It looks WAY more physical, especially with an ability called Grappler. What special Normal type moves would it utilize to take advantage of its high special attack stat? Just the standard sound moves like Uproar and Hyper Voice? We already have the Exploud line.
I always wanted Gengar to be Ghost-Dark If, if its own one line where its only Gengar since the earlier evolutions shows signs of poison and i think that element was kinda missing on the final evo. With the normal Gengar design and the lore made sense with the gaseous attacks making the original Poison-Dark!! AND IM LOVING EVERY LORE IN THIS VIDEO!!!😍
You should have given Gengar small touches of purple for the Cheshire Cat reference. Also purple is my favorite color. And it would be a smal nod to ghost/poison Gengar lol 😁💜😸
I really like retired Hawlucha’s ability. A cool out of battle effect that Coach could also have is that increases how many EVs a Pokémon receives after a battle
The gengar cat is awesome. And honestly I think you could stick your new Gengar at the end of the already 2 stage normal cat Pokémon line with Skitty and Delcatty. As a mock Ghastly and Haunter. Skitty a large headed kitten than bounces around like a Ghastly and Delcattys color matches closely with Haunter’s
Could you do a version of this where you type swap using a random type generator and a random Pokémon generator. Roll first for a type. Set the Pokémon generator to only have the type you got, then roll Pokémon. And then roll again for type. It be really interesting to see what things you have to draw
1. Wasn’t expecting Cat Boy Gengar but oh well, here we are! 2. Retired Hawlucha reminds me of White Pantera from El Tigre, since they’re both..well, retired, and their designs take inspiration from luchadors (Hawlucha being a luchador Pokemon and White Pantera’s mask looking like a luchador mask)
for future videos, if you wanna make more normal-types, you could make another "fakemon based on video game characters" vid and turn the Duck Hunt dog into a fakemon. Or make another "Fakemon based on anime characters" vid and make a fakemon based on Kyo Sohma from Fruits Basket or Asta from Black Clover. I suggest Asta because normal type could reference how he lives in a world where everyone has magic, but he has no magic of his own. And I suggest Kyo for the same reason as the duck hunt dog, Kyo turns into a cat and most normal types look like they could be normal animals. edit: Or do another video where you turn Pokemon's human characters into pokemon and make one based on Whitney, Larry, or Norman.
Wait so the pun in Pompal's name is even better with that lore on how they went extinct. They protected the Ancient Hoennians from a calamity? Like, say... a volcano erupting? _Like at Pompeii?_ Also, Peasunny totally looks like it could have an evolution into a jester-based rabbit mon, perhaps named Harelequin, who is highly regarded despite its mischievous and at times inappropriate behavior. It is commonly found tailing Calyrex around its domain, and is said to be one of the few Pokemon who can question Calyrex's judgement without repercussions.

One of my favorite Normal types is Zangoose, its very cool and actually quite useful :)
"Or they could be depicting a curvy goddess" I was'nt expecting Ron to say THAT
Oh hey, so this is kinda awkard.
Cool designs once again. That Normal-type Gengar made me wonder how it's pre-evos would look like.
Bro really said “F*ck you *untypes your Pokémon*”
Tht Hawlucha re-design could be Hawlucha's evolution wth a couple changes like couple of maybe proportion changes a name change and probably keeping it's fighting type status along ahh the normal typing but in the context of the video all the designs make sense and look good aswell 😁
I think it would be pretty epic if it was a trade Evo cause it's like it's retired from fighting for its trainer
@@Freecss111 yea tht would be interesting and i also had another idea of it being a regional variant of either wht it is now as a retired normal type or my idea of a normal fighting type u got good idea tho if say would be interesting
Love to see the video starting with Ron killing a shiny. Poor Psyduck didn't have a chance.
Rest in Peace Pompal, they would've loved flash mobs.
I love the Gengar! Perfectly translates the famous Gengar into a cat!
Adding spikes in places where Gengar didn’t already have spikes is incredible character design
I’m so glad someone decided to do this. This is an idea I had a while back but never got around to actually putting into practice. Good on you.
Absolutely genius!
I would like see you turning less normal-ly pokémons into normal ones. Like Gyarados, Latiꜵs, Spiritomb or Xurkitree.
Rest in peace Pompal and when you do part two can you make it about Ghost types of other Pokemon.
Cause I heard that real life hermit crabs can make their own homes made out of trash what they find in beaches, and glass is no exception.
i usually don't like ad transitions but 1:18 was just so damn smooth
8:20 WHY DID THE POMPAL DEX ENTRY MAKE ME CRY. ITS TOO CUTE TO DIE. rip pompal
Rest in Peace Pompal. I loved the Darmanitan version. I learned about the Darin’s doll eye thing recently from a game so I loved that detail.
RIP POMPAL THE GOAT GONE BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN
ok i do love the hawlucha and i know you worked very hard on him but just the name hawlucha (retired) feels like an april fools pokemon
rip pompal u were both adorable and tuxedo sam coded, and not to be dramatic but i would DIE for peasunny what an absolute cutie
Rest in peace, Pompal. Your sacrifice won't be in vain.
8:20 rip da boy
I'd love to see a normal type alakazam, where they don't have super intelligence and are more feral
I'm the Indigo Disk DLC there's a TM called Coaching, thought I'd bring that up, I love how all those pokemon became normal types
Won't lie, I'd train this Gengar, and I want to see the pre-evolutions XD
I like the idea that gengar was once a pokemin that had no evolution, but once it passes it needs to evolve to form its original shape
I would love to see a pompal evolution as a legendary or mythical. Something about its design really says shaymin/azelf to me.
I always wanted Gengar to be Ghost-Dark
If, if its own one line where its only Gengar since the earlier evolutions shows signs of poison and i think that element was kinda missing on the final evo.
It continues to live along as a poison ghost pokemon
-Pecharunt? 4:58
This is a very fun concept!
Rest in peace, Pompal.
For Norm-Darmanitan, I think it would work better with one eye closed
rip pompal. i like to think some latent will of the pompal is what helped bring baltoy and claydol into being
Pompal's lore made me so sad, rest in peace ✌🏾
Could you do a version of this where you type swap using a random type generator and a random Pokémon generator.
Roll first for a type. Set the Pokémon generator to only have the type you got, then roll Pokémon. And then roll again for type. It be really interesting to see what things you have to draw
I kept passing over this vid because I thought it'd be boring, but this was genuinely fascinating and your designs are incredible!
Rest in Peace Pompal
You were a good boi
Gangar alive i think would be called gangally
Goodbye pompal...
My favorite Pokémon is a normal type, but it's Chansey. Not much that is normal about her.
I like this concept! The Claydol one didn’t work for me but still a very enjoyable video!!! Would love to see another!
All of these designs were great in unique ways, and love the message at the beginning of the video
Wait so the pun in Pompal's name is even better with that lore on how they went extinct. They protected the Ancient Hoennians from a calamity? Like, say... a volcano erupting?
_Like at Pompeii?_
Also, Peasunny totally looks like it could have an evolution into a jester-based rabbit mon, perhaps named Harelequin, who is highly regarded despite its mischievous and at times inappropriate behavior. It is commonly found tailing Calyrex around its domain, and is said to be one of the few Pokemon who can question Calyrex's judgement without repercussions.
